I am wondering if the Museum has anything in the files about the Howard family who lived on Little Island? Can you post membership information and research fees? I have been researching my family there for years. Mary Lang was a friend and neighbor of my mother.

My uncle Torrence Dean Howard, lived in Skamokawa for many years, in a little house on or near the Fairgrounds. There was a bar nearby. Anyway he passed 29 Apr 1996 in Kelso and I realized I dont have his obituary.

I also dont have obituaries for my grandparents, Earl and Aurora Howard, who died 22 Sep 1982 and 3 May 1942, and are also buried in Cathlamet. They lived on Little Island for many years.

Im wondering if this information is available. When I went to visit my Dad years ago the paper had been microfilmed but there were no readers. Are interlibrary loans available for films?

Thanks a lot.

Aurora Howard Chancy

Hello,

I found a reference to a Bradley Logging Co out of Wahkiakum County. It operated as B L Co from 1908 to 1923 (I believe – from the steaminthewoods.com web site).

I have a building in Richmond Beach (Shoreline) WA and the fir shiplap boards are marked B L Co. Did the logging company also operate a mill?

I appreciate any information you can give me.

Thank you.

Tracy Tallman
Ralph Keyser who will be publishing a book on Wahkiakum County, Washington Logging in the coming months answered your question over the telphone. He said that Bradley Logging Company sold in 1924. While they owned a lot of timber land in Wahkiakum County they did very little logging themselves, contracting instead to Cathlamet Timber Company. There is no record in the Wahkiakum County Courthouse that they ever milled any logs but could have had a portable sawmill for a few logs.

He also said that there was a Bradwood Logging Company across the Columbia River from Cathlamet that logged and had a mill and used the initials you cite. He suspects that is where the lumber in your building was milled if it was a very large.

The other "person" has not properly identified the source of information, it is NOT:

> Source: WA Death Index on Mormon Church site.

It is the Family Search Labs,
http://labs.familysearch.org/
It holds the Washington Death CERTIFICATE Index. It shows he died on 9 March 1921 in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County, Washington at age 73 years, 2 months and 5 days. His father was identfied as James Allen Scarborough, his mother was Ann Elizabeth.

ANYONE can access this site.

AND, for the obit. Back in 1921, obituaries were NOT common for us Commoners. An obituary was written for the famous, infamous, victims of accidents or at the hands of others. Sometimes a death notice was published. Sometimes the family DID pay for an obit. The Washington State Library searches FOR AN HOUR in newspaper microfilm for the area that a person had died. Here is their website that has BETTER contact points at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx .
You can see the newspapers that they have microfilms in the catalog of holdings at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/microfilm.aspx

Ron Bestrom

I am not a descendant, but shirt tail relative. Here is some of what i know.Sudden Death of Mrs. Geo Burch. From Skamokawa Eagle Sept 28, 1899
This village was shocked last Thursday to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. George Burch, of West Valley. She had started about her household duties in themoring in her usual good helth, singing and apparently well and happpy, but towards noon her eldst child a little girl of five, startled her father by telling him that mother was dead. He left his work and hurried to the house only to find that her words were too true, for lying across the bed, her feet resting on the floor, lay his wife, dead. It is thought that Mrs. Burch died of heart failure.
Mrs. Burch was the daughter of Henry Kaup, of Cathlamet, and was 25 years old, and had been married to Mr. Burch some seven years. They have three little girls the youngest about a year old. Mrs. Burch was noted for her many acts of kindness among her neighbors and it was with sincere sorrow that they learned of her death. Her funeral took place Saturday noon at Fern Hill Cemetery and was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends. Her children were Amy born Aug 1892, she married Dayton Bielman 27 november 1913. #2 Alice born nov 1895 married William Willoaghby 25 dec. 1911 #2 Eva born june 1898 married Harry E Gill 22 july 1917. Henry Goodman Kaup, b. 16 mar 1880 John Day Oregon; d, 2 nov 1957 in skamokawa. M.Jennie Olson 21 Feb 1914 in Skamokawa, children Donald and Dorothy. Siblings Mrs. Josephine Graeff and Mrs. Annie Titus,
I'm still looking, is this a good start

I have checked most of my sources and can not find those names. Have you looked in Westport Oregon. I know many were there for a time.
Most of the ones I find in Skamokawa came around 1900 to 1910. if you would like a list of those names let me know. I will check next time I am at the Wahkiakum County Court house for more information.
I first found Andrew Pernula in Northside, Sweetwater Co., WY in 1900. He was born July, 1873, Finland, single in 1900, immigrated in 1895, alien and a coal miner. He was living in a boarding house and a Mathew Pernula was listed above him on the Census. Mathew was b. May 1882, Finland, single in 1900, immigrated in 1900, alien and a coal miner.

Andrew, wife and family appear on the 1910 Census in Deep River, Wahkiakum Co., WA. Andrew was married abt. 1905, b. Finland, immigrated in 1900, pending application for citizenship, 26 and woodsman logging camp. His wife Emma was b. abt. 1890, WA and had given birth to 3 children all of whom were alive in 1910. Ester b. WA, abt. 1906; Minnie b. WA abt. 1907 and Wilfred b. WA abt. 1909.

Harold Arthur Pernale (their spelling which might be an index mistake) b. 24 April 1914 in Wahkiakum Co. to father Andrew Pernale (their spelling) and mother Emma Victoria Witikka. He was an alien declared and an engineer for North Shore Logging Co., Megler, Pacific Co., WA. His nearest relative was Mrs. Emma Pernula, Anieda. He was medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.

In 1920 Andrew and family were living in Deep River, Wahkiakum Co. Andrew's citizenship application was still pending, he was a general farmer & 36 yrs old. Emma was 30. Ester was 14, Minnie 12; Wilfred 10; All children b. WA. Helen 7; Harold 5; Wilma 4; Theodore 3; and Lester 9.

In 1930 Andrew and part of his family were still living in Deep River. Andrew was married at 21 yrs and a naturalized citizen. See www.rootsweb.com/~walcolgs/lcgs.htm. They do research for a small fee.

Charles and Lillian Kaup, Harry and Eva (Burch)Gill, Henry and Jenny (Olson) Kaup, George and Gertrude (Kaup) Burch. All these Kaups originate from Heinrich and Gertrude (Drueke) Kaup who moved from my hometown in Nebraska to Cathlamet, WA.

I am doing genealogy research on all possible branches of my family, and would like to know more about this branch.
Hi my family was in Deep River from early 1900's, my dad was born there in 1909 I have photos from around 1909 to late 1920's. Also they had a house at Miller's Point.
The logging camps mentioned are K M Camp and Olson Camp. I have a lot of photos of unknown's to me as no names on the photos and some that the names were hard to read from fading over the years. If you want I could get you the site I have the photos on so you could look through them and see if you know anyone.
Thanks

They had 8 children, Esther, Anna, Wilfred, Lester, Helen, Frans, Harold & Howard (Ted).
My grandfather was a locomotive engineer in the logging camps. He was born in Hailuoto Finland. They had lived at Millers Point at one time. I also have a lot of old photos from that area with some names on some of them that were friends of the Pernula children. Also a lot without names.
I live on Puget Island, Wahkiakum County, Washington and I am a volunteer at the Wahkiakum County Historical Society. We are in the process of organizing genealogy type information so we have easier look-ups. A couple of months ago the coordinator positions for USGenweb.com came up for our county so it seemed natural to see what could be done combining what I do at the Museum with genealogy. Hopefully the two obituries that were provided will help you further. --Kari

Brix Cemetery or the Old Grays River Cemetery is on private land owned by the Burkhalters but they have always been willing to allow visitors to use the drive on their property to access the cemetery. The land around the cemetery was originally homestead by Charles Amundsen who sold it to Marius Amundsen. Brix's buried there are Christoph Brix born 12/25/1872, died 11/8/1887. Ella J. Muriel (Barr) Brix born 7/14/1884, died 2/7/1902. Herman Brix born 11/20/1878, died 4/14/1895 or 1896. Phoebe Eva (Majors) Brix born 2/15/1877, died 7/14/1900. It is thought that Peter Johannes is buried there but no physical headstone, he died in Portland.

I would like to correspond with you and exchange information. It is exciting to find someone else doing genealogy on this family. My brother and I have quite a bit of information we would be happy to share with you. We are trying to trace the family from Quebec to California. We know 4 brothers were in Markleeville, Ca and came to OR & WA from there. I may have pictures of the graves in Cathlamet if I can find them.
David Cady is buried in the Fern Hill Cemetery, Skamokawa, Wahkiakum County, Washington. His birth information is ca 11 December 1851 died 14 August 1896.

Evelyn Huerd did the transcription over a 5 year time ending in 1993 but this record was from cemetery records and newspaper records. Both Evelyn and I are volunteers with the Wahkiakum County Historical Society Museum.

The names are:
MONROE, Adelaide M - 1890-1973
MONROE, Alex J. - 1890-1966
MONROE Arthur L. - 1916-1999
There are two other MONROE's listed on the GenWeb site that I don't recognize right now, but if they are in the same area, please take them.
I have only been researching Wahkiakum County residents since September of 2005 and my database is not complete enough for me to say the writer of your post card writer was or was not a resident of Wahkiakum at one time. We can only directly link the post card to Wahkiakum County because of the Erp family. I can always share a scanned copy of the post card with Clatsop County as well because we share information and documents in the past.

I have had good luck with the personal items I have donated to the Oregon Historical Society although I did bear all of the costs in doing so. But I had bought the items at different sales with the idea of donating them for preservation and genealogy purposes for Oregon.

The Wahkiakum County Historical Society Museum address is P.O. Box 541, Cathlamet, WA 98612. Sometimes post cards are the only photographs or handwritting we have to represent a place or a family so they are highly prized by our Museum. Thank you.

Svenson is in Clatsop County, Oregon while the Erp family is out of Wahkiakum County, Washington. We can include it in our historical society collection or you can contact the Oregon Historical Society regarding the photograph and see if they are intested in adding it to their collection.

Do you not have the surname of the couple who is probably in the photograph in my county database but Joachim Henrich Erp married Christine Margaretha Brix in 1891 in Wahkiakum County, Their children were Lorena Henrietta Erp born 1892; Hermann Otto Erp born 1894 and Anton Peter Erp born 1898. Most of the family stayed in the Wahkiakum County, WA area or in Clatsop County, Oregon. Antone and his brother Hermann had a logging operation in the county.

I no longer give anything to OHS. I gave a few things even while I was till member had to fill out form and wait to have them bring it to me, and I had to pay to copy them.

I dropped my membership a half dozen years ago.

But am willing to send to Wahkiakum Co.

I considered posting that message to Clatsop Co, but all I know is he worked there.

Let me know how to do it.

My family from Morrow and Sherman Co in OR. I know they will take care of stuff and make it available. I have given to both, and may do more later.

Also I grew up just inland from Oreg coast, familiar with communities near coast.

Phil once from Lincoln Co
Thanks for responding

A friend checked some Oregon census listings. The Klinksiek couple are not shown with any children. So will not be able to place with direct family. As formal as the note to the Errp family they were probably not family

But thought there might be family in Wahkiakum Co Card indicated Mr Klinksiek was working in Svensen building a reservoir.

My daughter knows I get old photos and try to place them. So she got one from a neighbor. It is a postcard

On one side is a photo of a young man and woman and two cats. They are outside of a house, but lots of open space in background. Can see another house maybe a 1/4 mile away.

On other side is note signed by Mrs Will Klinksiet. the way it is worded appears to be photo of the Klinksiet couple. She gives their adddress as 173 E 80th St N.
It is addressed to Mr & Mrs Errp Grays River Wash.
Postmark is Nov 13, 1912 Portland

Have looked for that surname, not many with that name.

Any help with that name?

Posted here in case someone with Wahkiakum Co interests might know something. would like to get picture to family member

I just found this site and hope you're still at this address.
I was at the Amundsen Cemetery where Christian is buried a couple of summers ago and took photos of many of the old headstones. One of them happens to be Christian Rosburg. If you'd like me to e-mail you the photo, I'd be happy to.

Cynthia Gates Drowns in the Columbia River off Cathlamet

My fourth great grandmother Cynthia Gates fell off the Cathlamet Ferry and drowned in the Columbia River on 14 Jun 1874. Along with her a 12 year old boy drowned at the same time.

Does anyone know if any newspaper was in operation at the time that might have posted the obituaries?

Cynthia was the wife of Thomas Gates and they lived in Cathlametat the time of her death. I can not find what cemetery Cynthia and Thomas are buried in. Any help will be quite appreciated!

I would love to have any photographs you wish to spare of this cemetery and the Rosburg and Brix families. I was out there a number of years ago on a business trip and missed finding the cemetery. I just ran out of time. I did get to see the land on which he lived. Any links back to Benton County, Iowa?
Thanks Jim

Yes, I do have some photos of Amundson Cemetery I took in July, 2005. I've been visiting the area since I was a child visisting my grandparents in Altoona. And in all those years, I never knew that this cemetery existed until a friend took me there. I can attach the photos I have resized of gravestones of Pheobe Brix, Christian Rosburg and one, I just realized what it said, "Maria Dorathea Willa----(can't read) Rosburg". I will also post a photo I took in the cemetery. It is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've ever seen.
Christian Rosburg and his wife Maria Dorathea Wilhemina (I don't know her maiden name) are both buried in the Brix Cemetery, Rosburg, Wahkiakum County, Washington. I can provide further information if you need it. The Wahkiakum County Historical Society has a collection of the Grays River Builders at the Museum but I do not know if they will cover the years we would need for an obituary.

Emil Andrew Rosburg married a Collins, J W (Mrs) in Clatsop County, Oregon on 09-04-1907 and I would assume this is Louisa. Emil died December 09, 1949 in Clackamas County, Oregon. Louisa died April 03, 1943 also in Clackamas. I can find them in the Clackamas County census records. Nona R. Rosburg is in the 1930 Census at Rockwood, Multnomah, Oregon (Hospital).

I am the curator of the Wahkiakum County Historical Society and we've been compiling genealogy records for Wahkiakum County, Washington residents. I also have a personal interest in the Brix Cemetery since my husband's Amundson family once owned the land around the cemetery.

The Brix Cemetery was originally part of the Charles Amundsen homestead and was later sold to Marius and Louise Amundsen (my husband's great-grandparents). It is located out of Rosburg, Wahkiakum County, Washington. I have the original deed for this cemetery and the land surrounding it is now owned by the Burkhalter families. Carson Burkhalter is buried in this cemetery and the family has done a lot of clean-up and restoration work. The Burkhalters operate a dairy and will give permission to the cemetery if someone is there.

I am a volunteer at the Wahkiakum Historical Society Museum in Cathlamet and a genealogist. We are compiling genealogy records of Wahkiakum County. I was asked to find information on four families who had houses in Cathlmaet for a self guided walking tour brochure and the current "Needfull Things" or Nassa House is on my list. I have enough for the brochure now but would be interested in adding more genealogy information for the computer database on the family if your interested. --Kari Kandoll - kando@centurytel.net

Before the bridge was built from Puget Island, WA to Cathlamet, WA the process of getting to Cathlamet required a boat. Burials were not made on Puget Island because of the high water table. Choices were Cathlamet at Greenwood Cemetery, Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County, WA. or at Westport, Clatsop County, OR. Both locations required a boat but the Greenwood Cemetery was up the hill and was a task to get to so a lot of our Puget Island residents were buried in Westport. According to "Wahkiakum County Washington Cemetery Index by Evelyn Morris Huerd there is a Esther J. Vog Scensen born 8/16/1893; died 8/14/1984 and she is buried in Greenwood. Sidney Svensen was born 8/16/1889; died 9/27/.1970 in the same cemetery. Same book says that Infant Female Svensen born 1/14/1892; died 1/14/1892 with parents Sven Svenson and B. Johnson is buried in unknown location but the parents are buried in Westport, Clatsop County, Oregon. There is also a Matilda Svenson born 1895; died 1898 and Olaf Svenson born 1895; died 1895 buried in the Pioneer Birnie Cemetery in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County, WA. This was an easier cemetery to reach and is located by the grade school in Cathlamet. Leroy Svenson was the last living Svenson on Puget Island and he died a few years back .

Are you sure that Adams is buried at the Fernhill Cemetery in Skamokawa, Wa? I compiled a book in 1994 on all the cemeteries in Wahkiakum County, Wa. using 18 sources and did not find any burial for an Adams in Fernhill Cemetery.
He does not show up in land, cemetery, census, birth, death, marriage, naturalization, probate or commissioners minutes books for the area.
I was typing a message to you and I just lost it. Don't know if it got to you or not.

There is a Luzern Hansen buried at the Rosburg Cemetery in Rosburg, Wahkiakum, Wa.

There is a military marker for him only. No dates

It says: Luzern Hansen
Co A, 67 IL Inf

I put an approximate birth year of 1845 on the information
I included in a book.

There is also a Martha Hansen buried there. Born 28 Aug 1887 and died 19 Apr 1891. Don't know if they are related.

In the 1892 Wahkiakum County census Luzerne Hanson is shown with a wife. Luzerne is age 47, white male, Logger,
married, born NY.
Wife, Florentine, age 34, white female, born OR.
There is a listing for an Arthur Hanson a few lines down that show his age as 09, white male, and born OR. This might be a son. Only a guess though.

Don't know if this will help.

Evelyn

I have done several books on Wahkiakum County. They are mainly genealogical books.
I had a picture of Alpheus F. Cooper when he was in office in Cathlamet. It is in the 03 May 1979 edition of the Historical Wahkiakum County Eagle. The weekly newspaper printed in Cathlamet, Wa. The picture shows him sitting in a chair reading the newspaper and his two daughters sitting in front of him. Bernadette is identified as one and the other was either Kathleen or Winnifred. The picture was taken in the early 1900's.
His daughter, Bernadette (Cooper) McDonnell was my 4th grade teacher when she taught school there. Her husband, Thomas L. McDonnell was my 8th grade teacher and the Principal of the grade school.
A. F. Cooper was nominated as Cathlamet's first mayor in 1907, when the town was incorporated.
I do not have any record of where the Cooper family moved after leaving Cathlamet. You probably have that info already.
Bernadette Cooper McDonnell was born 08 Aug 1904 and died 05 May 1966. Her funeral was handled by Dowling Funeral Home in Cathlamet. She is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet.
If you want a copy of A. F. Cooper and 2 girls I will need your address.

Evelyn Morris Huerd
ehuerd@myhome.net

My Rulls come from Finland. They lived in the Deep River, Washington, and the Astoria, Oregon areas. I have two names that are possitive finds here. But they moved East - I was told to Virginia, but I lose the trail there. My father is Ellis Bacon, he had a half sister (Cilia), and a half brother (Arnold), that left the area and headed East. If I can find the right Rull family, perhaps I can fill in 50 years of my father's life that I cannot find. If any of your Rulls come from Washington State or Oregon, I'd sure be interested in them.

Other names besides Cilia, and Arnold are: John, Sophis, Kristina, Elvin, Austin Elmer, Leo, Christina, Bill, Mary, and Maty.

Another connection I have yet to figure out is Sophia Marie Rull's maiden name was "Kamm."

Anything you can find in your info about any of these relatives would sure be appreciated.

Thank you

PS

Where is Valletta Malta?
Jean, thank you so much! I found out that this Bessie Olson from Puget Island is not "my" Bessie Olson. I talked on the phone with a couple of the neighbors on the island, they remembered her and the incident, just like you described! What a thing, huh?

I sure wish she had been the same Bessie (Parkhurst, Olson, Hartell) which I was looking for, but I am so grateful for your offer to help nonetheless. Thanks for your generosity! Take care.

Do you have anything on BACON - or RULL? My father, Ellis Rull Bacon, apparently thought his last name was Olson, Olsen, ?, until he was 19 years old.
Thank you so very much! It gives me a bit of hope, knowing that someone has at least taken notice of my search. Your kindness is appreciated in any outcome.

I've found that my grandmother, from Finland, was apparently married to Charles Bacon. My father, Ellis Rull Bacon, was born on April 16, 1915 in San Mateo, CA. Apparently, my father didn't know his real last name was "Bacon," until he was 19 years old. I take it for granted that Kristine Bacon remarried someone named Rull? I just don't know. I've heard that my grandmother died in Cathlamet.

My father had a half-brother named Arnold, and a half sister named Cicillia, or something like that.

I remember the drive to grandma's when I was about 6, I'd guess. A long winding road, passing farm after farm. Then just around the bend was grandma's house, on the left. I remember all the families helping each other with the hay. I remember a little creek, with a little one car open bridge, leading to Grandma's long front porch. I have a lot of cool memories.

I'm sorry - just remembering is so much fun! I want so much to find out about my father's side of the family. I need to know where my father has been during his life. I have two sons. I want to leave them with the knowledge of where they came from. And I sure haven't made much headway. So I'm sure you can understand how thrilling it is to get a response to my quiery!

Please let me know if you have any luck. And - THANK YOU!

Elgie.

Do you have Quinault in your ancestry or Chinook that had land claims on the Quinault Res.? Because the Chinook are not recognized by the government many are wrongly listed on paperwork as Quinault, the same was true with Cowlitz but seems to be changing now that they are recognized. The paperwork on my father used to read: Deceased Quinault, now has been changed to Deceased Cowlitz and in fact he was equal Cowlitz and Chinook, a decendant of Edwin (NED) and Sarah Scarborough of Cathlamet. I have much of the rolls of certain Indian tribes copied and will look there for info for you. Barbara Patton

I'm glad my message got through, haven't tried to post messages before. (Obviously, or I wouldn't have posted my address for everyone & his brother to see. Oh, well.) I could well be wrong about John not living there & can't remember for the life of me who told me that. I had the impression that maybe he built it for his daughter or something like that because I did think it was the Nassa family who lived there. And it does seem like the previous owner told me it was in the Nassa family for a long time. You're welcome to come by, just let us know when. We have rather crazy schedules. The house is built very simply, more like a farmhouse, where his house in town is larger and more ornate. They actually patched holes in the boards walling the stairs with tin cans, I had never seen that in my life! And the staircase twists slightly because of the settling of the house. There is an old picture of the house at the museum in town, my husband ordered a print of it. I haven't had time to get back to the library yet for genealogy. More later.

My husband and I own Nassa Point. I believe you were recently contacted concerning us. We have owned it since 1996. The house is still in fairly good shape, although it was condemned in the eighties and had to have a major overhaul by the previous owners. It is still white. We have only replaced one window so far, but will need to do another on the North side, too much damp. The kitchen still has the high ceiling, but they lowered the living room ceiling during the remodel. The property is beautiful and we have wonderful sunsets over the river. Soon after we moved in, a woman who was doing genealogical research for the county came by to ask if we'd found any gravesites. She said there were some Nassa children unaccounted for in the cemetery. We hadn't seen anything. I went to the Longview library and found records of two Nassa children who died several days apart around 1911-1912 if I remember right. I believe they were brother and sister. I thought the girl was named Carrie. I'll go look it up again. I had been told that the house was built in 1894 and that John hadn't lived there, but had lived in Cathlamet across from the courthouse. I can't remember who told me where he lived, but you've probably got more accurate information since it's your family. This is my work e-mail so I won't see it until this weekend. I believe you were given our address, but just in case:
Jerry & Joyce Marston
851 E SR 4
Cathlamet, Wa. 98612

Info on life & Family James BIRNIE

Wahkiakum County:
I am seeking information on the life & family of James BIRNIE (1796-1864)
the founder of Cathlamet. My ancestor Thomas LOWE (1824-1912), a clerk with
the Hudson Bay Company, married James BIRNIE's daughter, Rose BIRNIE
(1830-1850). I know that at one time Thomas LOWE himself owned land in
Cathlamet. I should be grateful for any information about this pioneer
family & about the early days of the Cathlamet settlement. I am also seeking
information about the date & place of Thomas LOWE's marriage to Rose BIRNIE,
which was probably in May 1849. Family Search gives the place as Stella
Maris Mission, WA. Can anyone tell me where that was?

Caroline Gurney
Portsmouth, UK
caroline@cmgurney.freeserve.co.uk

Wahkiakum County Surname: Svensen

Looking for information on Sven and Bertha Serina (Johnson) SVENSEN and their family. Bertha Serina (maybe Serena) JOHNSON was my Great Aunt. Their children were Sidney, Garda (or Gerda), Olga, and Selma. Sven was a
professional fisherman on the Columbia in early 1900's and at one time had a boat named "Serina." They later may have raised peppermint. Family "history" says they owned an Island. Sven was a charter member of the Trinty Free
Church at Welcome Slough on Puget Island. Not sure if they lived on Puget Island or in Westport,OR. Sven died in late 1932 or 33, Bertha Serina probably late 1930's. Their daughters married names were: Mrs. E.M.JOHNSON
and Mrs. P.T.SHERMAN (both of Puget Island at time of Sven"s death); Mrs. John VOG of Portland (at time of Sven's death).

Interested in when and where Sven and Bertha were married, where they actually lived and any info on his
lively hood, where they and children are buried (Sven's obituary says he was buried in Westport Cemetery) and if there are any known living descendants who might be interested in learning something about their Iowa (Fayette
County) relations. I have two family portraits of the Svensen family (1900-1910) plus a postcard picture of his boat "Serina," which I'd be willing to make copies of at cost for any descendant or organization
interested.

Steve Parsons
Washington,IL
I grew up in Svensen Oregon. My parents live above Svensen Island on the Oregon side of the Columbia R. about 10 miles east of Astoria. Clatsop County Historical Society would be a great reference point. If he was buried in Westport, Oregon, that is between Svensen/Knappa and Clatskanie, Oregon.

Svensen Island is on the map. Whakiakum Cty. is across the river from Svensen Island and the Svensen community. Look up "placenames in Oregon" It is a book. It might be the place. There are many islands in the Columbia, but you could probably get info. land titles for previous owners.

This is no joke. I am no relation.
Hi Don,
I showed your posting to a friend of mine, she said she knew both Bessie and Holcomb. The wave you are talking about happened when Bradley Mt. (elevation about 650 feet), had a mudslide. The impact of the hillside sliding into the Columbia River caused the wave. Bessie's house was located outside the dike, on the lower end of the island, near Aegeater's Dairy Farm. Her house landed inside the dike, and was tossed around abit. Bessie was an elderly lady, and was asleep in bed when this happened. I don't know anything about Holcomb, but will do some research on this incident for you if needed.

We passed by a number of years ago and the house did look pretty good. Thanks for the info on the remodel, we'd love to stop by and take a tour if you're willing... I have better records on the babies that died, I'll forward them to you.

I'll check out what you say about John not having lived there. I have several pictures from the forties and fifties of my wife's relatives posing in front of the house. I don't know why they'd do that if John never lived there. I have no doubt he lived in Cathlamet but I thought he may have moved there later in life. He was fairly well-to-do. He made at least two trips back to Norway according to the Ellis Island records.

Jim_Cook@ieee.org

I would like to find the descendents of the family of Irvin Hodgson who died in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County, Washington in 1998 at the age of 94. Irvin's father was Earl Hodgson and his mother was Mary Fisher. The family was originally from Pennsylvania. Other children of Earl and Mary Hodgson were Dicky Ward (1906), Dorsey Dwight (1908), Gordon, Shirley, and Willard. Some or all of them may have settled in the same area. Shirley Hodgson's married name is believed to be Dressler or Deshler. Thanks. Julie Moes EJMOES@aol.com

Looking for more specific information on Alpheus F. Cooper, who settled in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum Co., sometime after 1905, after having lived somewhere in OR from around the mid-1880's. He is the son of Levi Cooper (1817-1877) & Mary Ann Bucy, b.in OH, moving to IL around 1857. He married Mary (b. about 1860 in IL) before 1885 & had the following children I know of: Alice ( b.abt 1885 in OR), Winifred (b. abt 1887 in OR), & Bernadette (b. abt 1905 in OR). In 1930 census he is identified as Treasurer, Wahkiakum Co. He likely died by 1930 since he is not with his wife nor daughters in the 1930 census. Alpheus is the nephew of my gg grandfather, also named Alpheus Cooper (1818-1896). They had a daughter Leavy Oliva born in Wisconsin and a daughter Laura born in Skamokawa. The family moved on to Lacenter Washington in Clark Co. I believe they originally came to Skamokawa because family members were already there. Anyone out there know of these people? Alice

I'm searching for information about my lost father, Ellis Rull Bacon. His mother, Christine Myren (not sure) lived with her brother Leo, on a farm at a place called Deep River in the 50's. It's been said she died in a rest home in Cathlamet, WA. My grandfather's name was Charles Bacon.

It has also been said that my father went by the last name of Olsen, until age 19, when he found out he was a Bacon. He apparently didn't have a birth cirtificate - only a baptism card.

I've been researching my missing father for about 20 years. I'd sure like a clue or two. Any advice or information would be appreciated.

Thank you very much

Elgie Bacon

Hey, you have a lot of great history. You still have family in the area I believe, their name would be listed in a Cathlamet Washington Phone directory. via computer. or AT&T I don't feel right giving that out. since I do not know the family personally. Also West Port cememtery is located in Oregon, where much of the family might be. I knew one Svenson, but lost contact with him. We attended Wahkiakum High school together. located in Cathlamet Washington. that is also where the county court house is locatied with a lot of information. (98612) These towns are very small, less than a thousand persons. so you will find everyone knows everyone. haha. Okay. good luck, oh the local paper from those times is available from the Washington State library. I can't remember the name, but it started with Cathlamet. Sue

I recently stumbled on to this page while researching family history.

I am an amature genealogist and have done quite a lot of research on my family in Wahkiakum County. In 1879 The first member came to Skamokawa and settled in east valley. The BJORNSGAARD line. Second came the VARNSONS, then KIMES, and last the MOONENS. I am curious if you are interested in this information I have compiled and in what form you would be interested in receiving the contents.
Thanks for your time.
You can correspond with any member of my immediate family.
andersoncotter@yahoo.com myself
ricksbigred@yahoo.com my brother rick

I thought maybe since they had several donation land claims.
and there are five generations buried in fernhill cemetery you might be interested.
sue

There were newspapers printed in that area during the years you speak of. One the Wahkiakum Eagle, my be the one you need but there was also a Grays River Builder, which is closer to that location. If you contact your local library they can rent the micro film of those papers to research. they need to contact Washington State Library. They are stored there for renting.
I personally never knew the town was named after a person. I came from skamokawa just up the columbia river. there were also many books written by a man named appallo, you might find in the state library about that area. good luck

sorry I forgot to write the directions to where the place is. Grays River is located in Wahkiakum (Wah Ki Ah Kum) county which is along the Columbia River in Washington. You start at the Pacific Orean on the map and head east. first is Pacific County then Wahkiakum. The towns located Now are Deep River, Rosburg, (no e) Grays River, Skamokawa, Cathlamet. the last holds the court house. Wahkiakum County Court House, Cathlamet Wa 98612. the largest town is a population of a little over 600 people. the rest are much smaller. and now have few stores or businesses. They were once thriving when the river was the only means of transpertation. which was until the 1930's now with the roads opening there are very few. The industry is still logging, but they have lost most of the farmers and fisherman.

I will do some research and see what i can find. i know there is family by the name of bacon still living in the cathlamet area, you might check out the phone directory and see what you can find there. They are very nice people and once owned a variety store in the town of cathlamet. I know the gentleman went to school with my mom. They graduated in the year 1946 from the high school there, named Wahkiakum High. There is also a newspaper available from that area, Skamokawa Eagle. later called the Wahkiakum Eagle. The deep river area might show up in the News papers from that area, try the Washington Statae Library for the names. i am sorry but it escapes my memory right now. good luck

Hi, I have done some research in this area, have you searched the cemetery records. they are good, I only recall one man named Lutes. He lived on Lutes Mountain, there is even a road by that name. He was written about in the newspapers, Wahkiakum Eagle, available from Washington State Library for rental. It is a great paper for information.
anyway the information I know of him is he was a favorite of the Newspaper editor, S. G. Williams and he always had a great Strawberry patch, he would invite folks up to pick for the Strawberry festival held severl years back then. I don't remember them ever mentioning a wife or children, but.... The were several other newpapers in the wahkiakum area but I can;'t remember all the names. sorry. sue
