My uncle Torrence Dean Howard, lived in Skamokawa for many years, in a little house on or near the Fairgrounds. There was a bar nearby. Anyway he passed 29 Apr 1996 in Kelso and I realized I dont have his obituary.

I also dont have obituaries for my grandparents, Earl and Aurora Howard, who died 22 Sep 1982 and 3 May 1942, and are also buried in Cathlamet. They lived on Little Island for many years.

Im wondering if this information is available. When I went to visit my Dad years ago the paper had been microfilmed but there were no readers. Are interlibrary loans available for films?

Thanks a lot.

Aurora Howard Chancy

Hello,

I found a reference to a Bradley Logging Co out of Wahkiakum County. It operated as B L Co from 1908 to 1923 (I believe – from the steaminthewoods.com web site).

I have a building in Richmond Beach (Shoreline) WA and the fir shiplap boards are marked B L Co. Did the logging company also operate a mill?

I appreciate any information you can give me.

Thank you.

Tracy Tallman
Ralph Keyser who will be publishing a book on Wahkiakum County, Washington Logging in the coming months answered your question over the telphone. He said that Bradley Logging Company sold in 1924. While they owned a lot of timber land in Wahkiakum County they did very little logging themselves, contracting instead to Cathlamet Timber Company. There is no record in the Wahkiakum County Courthouse that they ever milled any logs but could have had a portable sawmill for a few logs.

He also said that there was a Bradwood Logging Company across the Columbia River from Cathlamet that logged and had a mill and used the initials you cite. He suspects that is where the lumber in your building was milled if it was a very large.

The other "person" has not properly identified the source of information, it is NOT:

> Source: WA Death Index on Mormon Church site.

It is the Family Search Labs,
http://labs.familysearch.org/
It holds the Washington Death CERTIFICATE Index. It shows he died on 9 March 1921 in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County, Washington at age 73 years, 2 months and 5 days. His father was identfied as James Allen Scarborough, his mother was Ann Elizabeth.

ANYONE can access this site.

AND, for the obit. Back in 1921, obituaries were NOT common for us Commoners. An obituary was written for the famous, infamous, victims of accidents or at the hands of others. Sometimes a death notice was published. Sometimes the family DID pay for an obit. The Washington State Library searches FOR AN HOUR in newspaper microfilm for the area that a person had died. Here is their website that has BETTER contact points at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx .
You can see the newspapers that they have microfilms in the catalog of holdings at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/microfilm.aspx

Ron Bestrom

I am not a descendant, but shirt tail relative. Here is some of what i know.Sudden Death of Mrs. Geo Burch. From Skamokawa Eagle Sept 28, 1899
This village was shocked last Thursday to hear of the sudden death of Mrs. George Burch, of West Valley. She had started about her household duties in themoring in her usual good helth, singing and apparently well and happpy, but towards noon her eldst child a little girl of five, startled her father by telling him that mother was dead. He left his work and hurried to the house only to find that her words were too true, for lying across the bed, her feet resting on the floor, lay his wife, dead. It is thought that Mrs. Burch died of heart failure.
Mrs. Burch was the daughter of Henry Kaup, of Cathlamet, and was 25 years old, and had been married to Mr. Burch some seven years. They have three little girls the youngest about a year old. Mrs. Burch was noted for her many acts of kindness among her neighbors and it was with sincere sorrow that they learned of her death. Her funeral took place Saturday noon at Fern Hill Cemetery and was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends. Her children were Amy born Aug 1892, she married Dayton Bielman 27 november 1913. #2 Alice born nov 1895 married William Willoaghby 25 dec. 1911 #2 Eva born june 1898 married Harry E Gill 22 july 1917. Henry Goodman Kaup, b. 16 mar 1880 John Day Oregon; d, 2 nov 1957 in skamokawa. M.Jennie Olson 21 Feb 1914 in Skamokawa, children Donald and Dorothy. Siblings Mrs. Josephine Graeff and Mrs. Annie Titus,
I'm still looking, is this a good start

Do you know the name of the logging camp? You have not mentioned what years they were there? that would help me look for them.

I have checked most of my sources and can not find those names. Have you looked in Westport Oregon. I know many were there for a time.
Most of the ones I find in Skamokawa came around 1900 to 1910. if you would like a list of those names let me know. I will check next time I am at the Wahkiakum County Court house for more information.
I first found Andrew Pernula in Northside, Sweetwater Co., WY in 1900. He was born July, 1873, Finland, single in 1900, immigrated in 1895, alien and a coal miner. Andrew was married abt. 1905, b. Finland, immigrated in 1900, pending application for citizenship, 26 and woodsman logging camp. His wife Emma was b. abt. 1890, WA and had given birth to 3 children all of whom were alive in 1910. Ester b. WA, abt. 1906; Minnie b. WA abt. 1907 and Wilfred b.
If you've already found the Census info the next best step is probably to request research from the Lower Columbia Genealogical Society. See www.rootsweb.com/~walcolgs/lcgs.htm. They do research for a small fee.

I'm looking for any relatives with connections to Wahkiakum County from these families. Charles and Lillian Kaup, Harry and Eva (Burch)Gill, Henry and Jenny (Olson) Kaup, George and Gertrude (Kaup) Burch. All these Kaups originate from Heinrich and Gertrude (Drueke) Kaup who moved from my hometown in Nebraska to Cathlamet, WA.

I am doing genealogy research on all possible branches of my family, and would like to know more about this branch. I can't seem to find many descendants.

Hi my family was in Deep River from early 1900's, my dad was born there in 1909 I have photos from around 1909 to late 1920's. Also they had a house at Miller's Point.
The logging camps mentioned are K M Camp and Olson Camp. I have a lot of photos of unknown's to me as no names on the photos and some that the names were hard to read from fading over the years. If you want I could get you the site I have the photos on so you could look through them and see if you know anyone.
Thanks

Hi I am looking for any information that any one might have on Andrew & Emma Pernula, my grandparents. They had 8 children, Esther, Anna, Wilfred, Lester, Helen, Frans, Harold & Howard (Ted).
My grandfather was a locomotive engineer in the logging camps. He was born in Hailuoto Finland. They had lived at Millers Point at one time. I also have a lot of old photos from that area with some names on some of them that were friends of the Pernula children. Also a lot without names. My grandmothers maiden name was Witikka.
Thanks

Brix Cemetery or the Old Grays River Cemetery is on private land owned by the Burkhalters but they have always been willing to allow visitors to use the drive on their property to access the cemetery. The land around the cemetery was originally homestead by Charles Amundsen who sold it to Marius Amundsen. Brix's buried there are Christoph Brix born 12/25/1872, died 11/8/1887. Ella J. Muriel (Barr) Brix born 7/14/1884, died 2/7/1902. Herman Brix born 11/20/1878, died 4/14/1895 or 1896. Phoebe Eva (Majors) Brix born 2/15/1877, died 7/14/1900. It is thought that Peter Johannes is buried there but no physical headstone, he died in Portland.

Kari, Alexander Monroe was my grandfather and Harold was my father. Their other son was Arthur, not Antim. Antim, my great grandfather is actually Anthony Timothy. I would like to correspond with you and exchange information. It is exciting to find someone else doing genealogy on this family. My brother and I have quite a bit of information we would be happy to share with you. We are trying to trace the family from Quebec to California. We know 4 brothers were in Markleeville, Ca and came to OR & WA from there. I may have pictures of the graves in Cathlamet if I can find them. My e mail is Nancybei@cs.com.

The names are John and Effie(Roberts) Berg and daughter Olava Leavy Berg. Another daughter Laura was born there I believe in 1883 or 4. They later moved to LaCenter.

Thanks for any info.

Alice

I was in Skamakawa a few years back and read somewhere that there were other Bergs and I thought maybe they were relatives as my Bergs came out from Wisconsin and I was wondering why they would go there. I also have Moes from the same area.

Thanks again,

Alice
