I have no information that would indicate that Sarah Smith and Martha Ireland were sisters. Both were born in Charleston with Sarah in 1801 and Martha in 1815. Sarah's surname was Smith before she married Peter.

Feel free to contact me by e-mail at mmsires@bellsouth.net. I can e-mail scanned pages from the "Peter J. Sires Family History" to you as .pdf documents.
Would love to have all the information I can on Peter. My information says he came from Santa Domingo as a child. He was the son of French parents and brought here after a slave uprising....My gg aunt had written a family history that said Peter married sisters...One sarah and then Martha(Patsy). All records I show is Sarah name was Smith before she married Peter.....Does this agree with your records

I was one of the contributors/preparers of the "Family History of Peter J. Sires (85 pages)" which was printed in September 2000 for the Sires Family Reunion held on October 21,2000. I have the history stored as a gedcom file but have not transferred that file to my latest computer. As soon as I transfer that file to my computer I can e-mail it to you.

I am a descendant of William Henry Sires (Peter's 11th child, 9th with his 2nd wife Martha Miller Ireland). I am a 2nd great grandson of Peter Sires.

Hope that this information is helpful to you.

Mel

I am hoping that your e-mail address with this message board is still active. Today Mr. Brix was in the Wahkiakum County Historical Society and he asked for a copy of a photo of Christine Margaretha Brix Erp and one of the three children at maybe 6 months of age but the photo is not dated. He is doing his own personal history. I have scanned the photo and will send him a copy but also need to put the correct information with the photo and update the genealogy database as well.
My husband's gr-grandfather is Marius & Lovise (Haas-Wright) Amundsen who immigrated from Fredrickstad, Norway to the Great Lakes area in Canada where he worked as a ship's captain then to the Oregon/Washington. The Amundsen family owned and operated a large shipping company in Norway and we always used Amundsen although Wahkiakum County, WA records sometimes uses a son instead of sen. Marie, Abigail, Johnanna and Lars Amundsen are all accounted for in our family. Marius did have a brother Lars Frederick Amundsen who was a lighthouse keeper at Tillamook Rock and Cape Argo but he did not marry until after he retired from the service and had no children.

The other side of my husband's family is Bliss with the grandfather being Deforest Bliss.

I'm on the trail of Minnie MOORE who lived with her 13-year old sister, Laura AMMONDSON, and 3 children in Astoria, Clastop Co., Oregon (1900 Census). Do you have any connections here? Is there an AMUNDSON family tree online that I may peruse?

Thank you for any help you can provide.
Kathy

My childhood home was on Miller's Point, at the mouth of Deep River, the same house built and lived in by Andrew and Emma Pernula. My parents were Frank and Elizabeth Silvola. My mother was born and raised in Sisson Creek, across Grays Bay from Miller's Point. Her parents were Herman Anderson (Pernula) and Wilhelmina Witikka Anderson. Herman, I believe, was uncle to Andrew Pernula. He came to America from Hailuoto, Finland. My grandmother, Wilhelmina Anderson, was born and raised in Centerville, Washington. The old Witikka barn still stands beside the highway at Centerville Road, on the way to Goldendale. If any Pernula or Witikka relatives would like to get in touch, my e-mail is pdxnate2917@comcast.net.

In an old set of family slides, I found the attached which was dated March 1953.
William Johnston died 06/18/1933 and is buried in Longview Memorial Park, Longview, Cowlitz County, WA. I checked the two written sources for the Fern Hill Cemetery in Skamokawa and finally checked with the sextant who directed me to check Cowlitz County. The county newspaper collection at the State Library and the Wahkiakum County Historical Society are hit and miss during the 1920's and 1930's based on donations of private collection. Unfortunately when the present owners of the Eagle bought the newspaper with equipment and the newspaper collection or so they thought. When they went into the building for the first time after the sale they found all newspapers gone and were told the newspapers had been thrown out.
So I can say without a doubt he was buried in Fern HIll Cemetery in Skamokawa, Washington.
Next i suggest you go to your public LIbrary and request the borrowing from WAshington State LIbrary the reels of Newspapers. Name, Skamokawa Eagle, published by Samual Grant Williams. Also the Columbia Builder. Start with the Skamokawa EAgle a very fine newspaper. it began in 1891. and go forward. Alex is mentioned many times in the paper. I have been doing research on this town for years. I have 67 relative buried in the cemetery. I hope I have been of help.
Your Sue

William T Johnston, Civil War Veteran, Wahkiakum County

Seeking identifying information, death and burial of Alexander T Johnston, the last living Wahkiakum County Civil War veteran in the 1930 census. He was born abt 1846 in Northern Ireland and came to the United States in 1862-1863. He fought in the war (unit unknown, sorry, that's part of what I am looking for!) to gain his citizenship. Apparently he never married. I have found him in two local census enumerations, both of which telegraph his Civil War service: in 1910 he is a farmer and resident of Skamokawa and living alone, and in 1930 he is a retiree and resident of Skamokawa living with his nephew and niece, Raymond and Minnie Wiscomb. In 1920 the Wiscombs were still living in New York. Searches of the military records at Orting and Retsil, the two Washington veterans homes, are nil, as are the death certificate indexes for Washington and Oregon. Advanced help from someone on the ground in Cathlamet with access to local historical resources would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your reply to my query.

I have learned quite a bit about Hans and Nellie (HOPPS) PETERSEN in the past few months.

I have been helping my boyfriend's daughter research her ancestry. Hans & Nellie are my boyfriend's grandparents. The tree his daughter is building is on Ancestry. Here's a link to the page on Hans' family:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/13281456/person/-61903022

I have full access to her tree online, so the tree reflects the work of more than one researcher over the past few months.

I would never grant someone else full access to my own tree to edit it, but I was happy to accept access to hers. She is a new researcher, so it's all too easy for her to take off down the wrong trails.

Thanks again,

Kena Jacobs
Portland, OR

Sorry I can't answer your question, but can give some analysis. You appear to have a good grasp on genealogy research, hopefully I can hit a light you had not yet seen.

The 1900 census you had linked shows Hans and Nellie Pierson/Piersen as renting in Brookfield, Wahkiakum County, WA. The census enumerated 23/24 June. He, born in Germany, she in Kansas. This is consistent through the census. He was identified as having immigrated in 1882. He was a fisherman. They were shown as married one year. He was shown as born Jan 1867(33), she as June 1864(35).

The 1910 Census you had linked shows Hans as 43, Nellie as 25 born in Kansas to both parents born in Kansas. They were owning in Altoona Precinct. Married 10 years, census enumerated 26 April. Hans immigrated in 1882.. Children:
Albert, 9(1900/1901), born in Oregon; Ralph 7, born in Oregon, Martin 5, born in Oregon, Elmer, 3, born in WA. Enumerated 26 April.

In the subsequent Census, Nellie was 35 in the 1920 and 45 in the 1930. Hans was 52 in the 1920 Census and 62 in the 1930 (although he "should" have been 53 and 63 if born in Jan 1867).

The Oregon archives: http://genealogy.state.or.us/ has a Hans Peterson, naturalization in 1887 in Yamhill County, Oregon. There is NO proof this is the same person as being researched. You can obtain records via this site.

Given the "facts" of the US Census, there is no proof of marriage in Wahkiakum County. I could not find Hans in earlier Washington State Census, the last two being the 1891 and 1898. That could mean he wasn't in the State of Washington in those years, or he was just missed (out fishing). The fact three of his four children were born in Oregon is also a potential clue.

If he immigrated in 1882, he would have been about 15, "possibly" immigrating with parents. Thus, that would help eventually identify all the other Petersen's showing in that 1910 census. Immigration from Germany at that time period could have involved migration to east coast USA, OR, via Quebec, Canada. But, that is another task. Your query was marriage, so I'd have to assume you have the family after the census identified.

Since he was a fisherman in 1900, I would doubt he had immigrated to Kansas, where Nellie was born. I would only be able to submit a "GUESS" that her family had come west to Oregon or Washington, where they met.

Your "leads".
I would try to identify the location of birth of all four children. If there is some consistency in place of birth, there might be an older generation in that area, i.e. her parents or his.
I would also attempt to identify from city directory records when they first appear in Wahkiakum County. You know they were there in 1900, if records can find them earlier, then you have a better chance of finding their marriage there within the past couple of years. The 1900 census shows marriage of 1 year, but I would go two. If they can NOT be found there, they may have married elsewhere...again, taking it back to possible Oregon.

You will have to go one step back beginning with Wahkiakum County in 1900, or at the location of the birth of Albert.

Volunteer researchers:
Wahkiakum Co: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wawahkia/lookup.htm

Other: The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness:
Washington: http://www.raogk.org/washingt.htm
Oregon: http://www.raogk.org/oregon.htm
Read the guidelines before contacting a volunteer.

Ron Bestrom
Hi Kena,
I checked the Washington State Digital Archives for the marriage of Hans and Nellie but didn't find it. It might not have been entered in to their data base yet.

Check with the Wahkiakum County Auditor, co.wahkiakum.wa.us/depts/auditor/index.htm and ask them to search for it. They were married 1899 plus or minus one year.

If that doesn't work out, contact the Lower Columbia Genealogical Society, rootsweb.com/~walcolgs/index.htm .

In 1920 this family was living in Minerva, Lane Co., OR.
Hans M. Peterson, b. Germany, 52, immigrated 1882, naturalized before 1920 Census, dairy farmer.
Nellie E., wife, b. KS, 35.
Albert H., b. OR, 18, single, laborer farm.
Ralph A., b. OR, 17, laborer farm.
Martin C., b. OR, 15.
Elmer, b. OR, 13.
Brice J., b. WA, 3 9/12ths.
Loyd I. b. OR, 1/12.

In 1930 some of the family was living in Florence, Lane Co., OR.
Hans M. Peterson, b. Germany, 62, immigrated 1883, naturalized, marr @ 32, supervior road district.
Nellie E., b. KS, 45, marr @ 16.
Ralph A., b. OR, 27, single, natches ____ saw mill.
Martin P., b. OR, 25, single, driver caterpillar.
Bruce I., b. OR, 14.
Loyd I., b. OR, 11.
Hans M., b. OR, 3 3/12ths.

A volunteer will help you find their death dates. Go to Random Acts Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK), raogk.org, choose Oregon, choose ALL for the County and look for Mabel who has access to the Oregon Death Index.

If she can find their death dates and if they died in Lane Co., then go back to RAOGK, choose Oregon, choose Lane Co. and choose one volunteer who looks up obituaries. Successful Searching!

I believe her maiden name is Stewart as that what I have seen listed as her name on a death certificate for one of her sons. That being said, I have not been successful in my attempts to confirm this information. She was born in Louisiana but I still have not locagted any additional records that support who her parents were.

Henry was born in Mansfield, Ohio. I have not located a marriage record for Henry and Minnie. Their first child was born in California with the rest being born in Wahkiakum.

Time away is always a good thing, so I hope you enjoy your time away. If you are able to take some photos, my email address is bowmanpenny78@yahoo.com. Henry Marcus Bowman and Minnie apparently divorced between 1888 and 1900. The 1910 census has Thomas Jefferson Bowman (born 1888) living in Wahkiakum with his father and in Astoria, Oregon with his mother) The second born son of Henry and Minnie, George Henry Bowman was 22 years old when he died after a logging accident (if my memory serves me correctly, he had a limb amputated and never recovered). He left behind a wife and infant son who later moved to Flint, Michigan.

I am looking for the marriage date and maiden name for Nellie, wife of Hans Petersen. Hans Petersen (b. Jan 1867 in Germany) married Nellie (b. Mar 1884 in Kansas) about 1899. They appear in the 1900 U.S. in Brookfield Pct., Wahkiakum Co., WA.
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...
In 1910, they appear in Altoona Pct., Wahkiakum Co., WA.
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...

I am also interested in any information that might be available about Hans Petersen and the other Peterson families listed on the same census page in the 1910 census.

K Jacobs

My uncle Torrence Dean Howard, lived in Skamokawa for many years, in a little house on or near the Fairgrounds. There was a bar nearby. Anyway he passed 29 Apr 1996 in Kelso and I realized I dont have his obituary.

I also dont have obituaries for my grandparents, Earl and Aurora Howard, who died 22 Sep 1982 and 3 May 1942, and are also buried in Cathlamet. They lived on Little Island for many years.

Im wondering if this information is available. When I went to visit my Dad years ago the paper had been microfilmed but there were no readers. Are interlibrary loans available for films?

Thanks a lot.

Aurora Howard Chancy

Hello,

I found a reference to a Bradley Logging Co out of Wahkiakum County. It operated as B L Co from 1908 to 1923 (I believe – from the steaminthewoods.com web site).

I have a building in Richmond Beach (Shoreline) WA and the fir shiplap boards are marked B L Co. Did the logging company also operate a mill?

I appreciate any information you can give me.

Thank you.

Tracy Tallman
Ralph Keyser who will be publishing a book on Wahkiakum County, Washington Logging in the coming months answered your question over the telphone. He said that Bradley Logging Company sold in 1924. While they owned a lot of timber land in Wahkiakum County they did very little logging themselves, contracting instead to Cathlamet Timber Company. There is no record in the Wahkiakum County Courthouse that they ever milled any logs but could have had a portable sawmill for a few logs.

He also said that there was a Bradwood Logging Company across the Columbia River from Cathlamet that logged and had a mill and used the initials you cite. He suspects that is where the lumber in your building was milled if it was a very large.

The other "person" has not properly identified the source of information, it is NOT:

> Source: WA Death Index on Mormon Church site.

It is the Family Search Labs,
http://labs.familysearch.org/
It holds the Washington Death CERTIFICATE Index. It shows he died on 9 March 1921 in Cathlamet, Wahkiakum County, Washington at age 73 years, 2 months and 5 days. His father was identfied as James Allen Scarborough, his mother was Ann Elizabeth.

ANYONE can access this site.

AND, for the obit. Back in 1921, obituaries were NOT common for us Commoners. An obituary was written for the famous, infamous, victims of accidents or at the hands of others. Sometimes a death notice was published. Sometimes the family DID pay for an obit. The Washington State Library searches FOR AN HOUR in newspaper microfilm for the area that a person had died. Here is their website that has BETTER contact points at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx .
You can see the newspapers that they have microfilms in the catalog of holdings at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/microfilm.aspx

Ron Bestrom

Hi Mollie, I found an Edward Scarborough who died 9 March 1921, Cathlamet, Wahkiakum Co., WA; father=James Allen Scarborough and mother=Ann Elizabeth Scarborough. Source: WA Death Index on Mormon Church site.

You can request an obituary from the Washington State Library, by sending an EMAIL to AskALibrarian@secstate.wa.gov . Provide them the name, date & place of death & they will search the newspaper microfilm for 30 minutes at no charge. Successful Searching!
