I am searching for living descendants of William (1862–1931) and Carrie (1867–1948) Ellsworth (lived in Cedonia after ~1928). William’s grandfather (also William, of Strong, Maine) was my great, great grandfather. I am hoping to locate relatives who can help ID photos from the Ellsworth family that date back to the 1860s and perhaps earlier.

Descendants of William and Carrie Ellsworth include: Clifford E. Ellsworth (m. Mildred Dashiell), Roy A. Ellsworth (m. Laura Little), George Ellsworth, Cassie Ellsworth, Winnie Ellsworth/Reynolds, Clara Ellsworth/Burke, Hattie Jeanette Ellsworth, Nona Ellsworth/Summerour, and Peggy Ann Ellsworth/Stach.
I am researching Margaret Henchley Landon who died in 1928 and is buried in the Chewelah Pioneer Cemetery. I beleive her daughter was Emma H (aka Harriet)Ford, married to Herbert Ford who are also buried there. I beleive Emma was the sister of Anna Maria Landon Pickell who was the mother of Georgia Pickell Linscott. One of Georgia's daughters, Zelda is also buried there. I'm wondering if there are any descendants of these families still in the Chewelah area, or if anyone has any information about them.
Thank you!

I'm wondering if there is any way to find early mining records for the Chewelah area. Charles W Linscott did some mining there between about 1906 and 1910 or so. Family stories are that he started a mine in the area but didn't have the funds to get the ore out of the ground and sold it. I am also searching for birth and death records for his daughter Selda (or Zelda) born in about 1907 and died in 1910. She is buried in the Chewelah cemetery, but I have no other information.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
Sandy

Stevens County Missions

This is a New Thread name for a previous posting
WAS: Stevens County Roots:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.was...

> Hello Ron, I would like to say Thank You to You for what you do. Thank You.

First, You're Welcome. I have had some time recently to assist others in genealogical research. While I have family and family history in Colville/Stevens County, I don't live there (currently). There are many qualified genealogists in the Stevens County, or among those that view the postings. Other qualified experts can be found via the Stevens County GenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wasteven/stevens.htm or, via the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society: http://www.newgs.org/ . I am sure that whenever any assistance on this board does not completely answer the inquiry, that someone will fill in those gaps, possibly offlist.

> Would you by chance know anything about The Early Days of Stevens
> County? I have two concerns, or questions.
> One is, Do you know anything about the Old Missions? Most specifically, who
> Trained oxen in the winter time in the early 1900's for the misson?

The NE WA Gen Society as identified above has a number of fine history books for sale, as well as some fantastic database references. This question is very unusual (at least to me), but very interesting. I would enjoy doing research on this; but my distance to Colville makes that impossible. I will try locally. (On the Norway List, I got involved in research concerning a group of Norwegians that trapped reindeer, put them on a ship to New York, transported them across the USA to Seattle, then sailed to Alaska. It was a very interesting project. Yours about the oxen would also be interesting. If someone doesn't respond to your inquiry, contact them.

Public Records

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a local forum that was presented by the Washington Coalition for Open Government. WWW.washingtoncog.org . This organization may have similar organizations in your own state. The forum concerned access to government information and public records. Find out and become ACTIVE in their work.

This newspaper reporter attended the forum and wrote his article as to the lessons learned in the forum:
http://www.thenewstribune.com/310/story/39415.html If this link becomes broken in the future, I have saved this article.

READ this article.

As we have watched, many local county recorders across the country have taken records off the Internet. These records are a MUST for genealogy research. They have done this in regard to the "threat" of identity fraud/theft. The definition of Identity Fraud in a number of jurisdictions is taking anothers identity to commit fraud. Identity theft is taking the actual identity of another person for a multitude of false reasons.

Today, a very large number of persons (Mostly the elderly) are afraid, fearful, that their identity will be used by the criminal element for fraud. They are fearful of any of their information being posted on the Internet, as that would lead to identity theft of their names and accounts; and cause them great financial losses. But, they fall victim to someone on the Internet just asking for them to give their information, "Phishing".

Information on the Internet is the cause... This is just NOT, repeat, NOT true. The main problem is not in online records, it is the credit industry giving credit to anyone that has a name of a person. I could get enough information from your garbage or steal your mail to give me MORE personal information on you than is available in public records. If I can't go online to get information, then all I would have to do is just go to a local county recorder and get the same information. So, I steal your mail, get your bank account information...or even those, almost daily, credit card application mailings. I then just apply for credit in your name. Or, I just go to a phone book and get your name and address and print out checks in your name. I can also just print out a false drivers license in your name and address. Any store would honor that.

We don't need to hide records, we need to stop the use of immediate and unauthorized credit being given to criminals. EVERY credit card issuer needs to have restrictions in giving credit cards, just based on an application. Every retail establishment MUST require proven identity of a credit card or check. If you don't want to be asked for ID, then don't complain if your identity has been stolen.

Genealogists, you MUST become active in preventing local county recorders from keeping information off the Internet. I do research nationwide. Even if it was State wide, I can NOT visit every county to see what records they may have on a family. I have found dozens, if not hundreds of family members...supposedly lost over time. We MUST have access to PUBLIC records.

Contact your local county auditors, assessors, newspapers, state representatives. We MUST fight for availability of records ONLINE. Soon, these counties will be shutting off records for those even asking in person. The USA can NOT become an iron curtain for public records.

Tell your State or County government representatives that they can actually SAVE money by putting this information online. They would not have to have their own staff do the research and provide the information being asked by a local person, or by a letter or email request. The SAME information could be provided automatically. The Washington State Auditor, Brian Sonntag has even made the statement that hardening security is better than eliminating access to public records. “I would rather see us respond to a problem than try to prevent one that hasn’t happened yet,” he said.

We all MUST fight for open government records, at EVERY level. There is no "classified" information at the local or State level. I was a Special Agent with the Federal government, with 32 years of service. There ARE records that just anyone can not obtain. These include your IRS tax records. Your records will be safe...until someone at the IRS decides to sell that information. Or your bank personnel decides to sell your information. So, there MUST be a check and balance system to prevent someone just using your information...without someone actually contacting you, or questioning why the credit is being issued to another address.

FIGHT for access to local government records. FIGHT for Internet access of the same records. FIGHT for genealogy research. And fight for restrictions to use of private information without proof of identity.

POST this on your genealogy sites you visit.

Ron Bestrom

Worked in the
> timber field, died or disappeared about 1925 or 1927. Leaving a wife, Lucy
> Irwin Austin, with two small children, Noma Louise Austin and Edward Albert
> Austin. Edward is buried in the Tekoa "Goldenrod Cemetery" in Tekoa, WA.
and:

> Any Irwin's, names would be Robert Irwin, the father, and Will or John Irwin,
> his sons. From the Cove area of Tekoa, WA.

In the 1930 US Census for Tekoa, Whitman Co, Washington
Lucy D Austin, age 55, married, married at 38,
Albert E. 16
Noma L 15 They are living with the brother of Lucy:
George W. Irwin, age 64
Anna A, Irwin, sister to George age 58.
Also in the household:
Jay Butler, Nephew, age 42
Williams, Mary B, Grand Niece 4 11/12

In the 1920 US Census for Latah, Spokane County, WA
Lucy Austin, age 45, born in California, to father born in Indiana, mother in Illinois. Lucy is identified as being married.
Albert E. 6, born in Oregon to father born in New York, mother in California
Noma L, 5, born in Oregon, NY, CA.
Lucy is living with her brother John M. Irwin, age 56. He is a farmer.
Also in the household is Anna Irwin, age 48, and George W Irwin 54, siblings to John.

The 1900 US Census for Little Hangman, Spokane County, WA
Lucy born December 1875, Single, born in CA to both parents born in Missouri.
Living in the home of:
John M. Irwin, born April 1862 in CA to both parents born MO.
Robert, father, born Dec 1827 in Missouri
Sarah J. Mother, born Dec 1836 in Missouri.

I will continue to look for this Charles Austin, we know now that he was "supposedly" born in New York. But, he wasn't living with the family in 1920 either. Without further information on him, Date of Birth, etc., it will be difficult to identify one Charles Austin from another. I will look for marriage information also. The World War I Draft Registration Card images might show one that is married to Lucy, since Edward Albert was born around 1914.
--Washington Death Index has Edward A. Austin, died in Spokane on 17 Oct 1978 at age 65, his residence was in Whitman County.

I will post this preliminary research (as I have to do other things) in the event someone has information about them.

Orillis Francis Rush and Grace Gennieve Runyon are my great grandparents. According to 1920 census Grace was born 1887 in North Dakota. Father was listed as born in Kentucky, mother in Iowa. Her mothers maiden surname might be Bradspri. She married Orillis Rush at an unknown date and travelled west to Washington, Oregon, California. They had children in Ferry Washington 1915, Oregon 1920, California 1925, Oregon 1930. Orillis died 1932 in Oregon. Grace Died 1963 in Nevada, CA. They have many descendants so if we can make a link there might be many unknown relatives.

Thanks
Phil Rush
phil@philrush.com

I have relatives on a 1930 census in SOUTH FORK, Stevens County, WA. Can anyone tell me where that is/was? My mother thinks it might be 20+ odd miles out of Colville - but doesn't know which direction. She lived in South fork from about age 4 through 9 before moving to Chewelah. So, her memory is not real clear on the location though she has extremely fond memories of it. We are planning to drive through Stevens County next week and were hoping to find this area. Any info will be GREATLY appreciated.

In 1889, Gus Riddle, operating the ferry, was confronted by one Mr. Peterson who owed him some money. Seeking to cross the river, Peterson engaged Riddle in an argument in which he shot the ferry operator, who soon died in Ellensburg.
I'm looking for the first name of Mr. Peterson.
Hello,
I have reviewed the newspapers that were published in the Stevens county region which are available for inter-library loan to my local library.
My problem is that my deceased relatives lived in the Dunn/Maud/Daisy region. I believe having a ranch there. My question is, would anyone happen to know which paper (might) have published an obituary of their deaths from that region. I am looking at the years of 1911, 1940, 1967, & 1985. I am wondering if it might have been a newspaper from Colville?
Any help/suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Don
I am looking for that elusive obit for Arvilla Dibble MAXWELL who died 19 September 1890 in Spokane, Spokane County, WA. Since her sons William H. Maxwell and John Wesley Maxwell homesteaded in Stevens County, I am hoping there was some sort of obit in a local paper. Her husband, William Maxwell, was a circuit riding Methodist Episcopal preacher and Arvilla preached as well and they traveled to Stevens County frequently. Any ideas where to look or how to go about this? I have not found any references in the Spokane Spokesman Review

She was born in CA. She is buried in CA. Her maiden name was EVANS. Her mother's name was Esther SMITH (maiden name). Dolores's mother & my grandmother Ruby Smith were sisters. I am researching the SMITH family. I have some documents and pictures to share with other family members and hopefully they have stories and pictures to share with me.

Good day,

I am looking for descendants of Anna Flory Waitt born around September 1883 in Dakota Territory. She is the daughter of Matthias Flory and Frances Schotthoefer Ackerman Flory. The family moved to Canada around 1903 and lost touch with some of the family members. A clue to her whereabouts was the menion of her name as Anna Waitt from Valley, Washington. The obit she appeared in is her half brother, Joseph Ackerman in 1956 in North Dakota. Any clues or information on this family would be most helpful. From the cemetary records that are online for Valley, I am hedging a guess that her husband's name is Charles.
Sarah was born 1847 in New York and died March 1927. they are buried in Chewelah Pioneer cemetary. I am interested in finding an obituary or marriage record. Family lore has it that Andrew had a commonlaw wife that was an "indian squaw", however, I don't think that fits with an older woman from New York. Who was she? Thanks for any help

Original Daisy Washington

Does anybody know if the original site of Daisy Wahsington that went under water in the lake above Coulee Dam, is in Stevens County?

Were the original buildings...I understand at least 3 stores, etc,...moved to a new location? Is there a Daisy Washington currently in Stevens County?

Does anybody have any photos of the original buildings of Daisy (even if they are in a new location)?

the reason I am wondering is because my grandfather Clarence Custer Britton began school in the original Daisy Washington. I would love some info and pictures if anybody can point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Am researching REHWALT or ROBERTS in Stevens County. John George Rehwalt married Ida May Roberts (Miller) , possibly in the county around 1907-08. Also John Roberts lived in the Onion Creek area from about 1916 to 1936. Would appreciate any information on these people. Thanks, Flora Rehwalt Barwig

Jenkin/Reed Relatives

Hi, I'm looking for possible relatives of mine. They would be Thomas Jenkin and Edith E. Reed, my great aunt. She was born in Carnmenellis, Cornwall, England along with my grandfather David Henry Reed. I have a copy of their "Marriage Return" stating that they were married on the Jenkin Farm on October 23, 1899. Witnesses were Henry R. and Matilda Jenkin. If anyone can respond to this request I'd be more than happy to share all the information I have on the Reed's from Ishpeming, Michigan, which is where my family search starts after their Cornwall trip here. I also have a great deal of information in regards to their lives in England prior to their coming here. Thanks in advance for any response.
Russell Reed
Stevens County Public Records

How do I find marriage, divorce, death notices, obituaries and land records for Stevens County in the 1950's and 1960's? Are there lists of graduating students for 1950-1960 for Kettle Falls and Marcus?
I cannot find resources on the internet for any of these. Only cemetery records.
I called a lady at the library there and she informed me I have to search the newspaper archives at the local newspaper office or visit the county courthouse there.
There used to be a genealogical society there but they only have very early records.
Thanks
