The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land grants under the Homestead Act: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
This site shows a land grant to James H and Amanda Kendrick, issed on 2/3/1910

The property was in the Willamette meridian, Range 40-E, Township 30-N, Section 2. It was in 4 parts: Lot 1 NENE Quarter, Lot 2 NWNE Quarter, Lot 3 NENW Quarter and Lot 4 NWNW Quearter.

Go to: http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html and enter those identiers into the top and submit.

The nex window shows some details as to its location. Next click on "Switch to TerraServer". Above the aerial photo, click on "Topo Map" and click on the largest blue box for size.

On this new window, you'll see red squares. Those are Sections. About the middle of the map, you'll see a red square with a red "1" in the middle. Click in the middle of the box to it's left, where you see "Gravel Pit". Now, click in the middle of that box again. You'll now see a red number "2". This is the section where they lived.

Now, if he was from Canada, before he could obtain the land, he would have to prove citizenship. Request the files for this land, it should show his naturalization papers. But, since he "may" have come here in 1870, naturalization was much different than today. See: >
