William Kiernan was living at 612 W 16th in 1911, and you can get a current picture (actually two pictures) at the Spokane County Treasurers website http://www.spokanecounty.org/pubpadal/ click I Agree and then put in an address. I checked and it did not look like a 100 year old building, but the treasurer says it was built in 1908, and is a BIG house. By the way there is a Kiernan Avenue on the north side of Spokane today.

Charles

This may be a long shot, but I just added a memorial to Find-a-grave of C. Gunnar Rydstedt, 1891-1926.  According to his death record he was born in Sweden Dec 11, 1891 and died in Broadview, Cook County, Illinois April 11, 1926.  He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Blue Island, Cook, Illinois.  How he came to be in the Chicago area I don't know, but it seems to be the same person.  Here is the link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ry...;
Thank you so much. My family legends are beginning to come clear. With this new information, I only have more questions.
Yesterday I visited the gravesites of Bernadine and my great aunt Elizabeth(Finley)Kagy and uncle Mason Kagy in the Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima, WA. When I get home, I will post pictures.
Supposedly, the Kagys adopted Bernadine but I don't know if it was a "legal" adoption. I cannot find a family connecton between the Kagys and Bernadine's birth family the Lahars. Bernadine is buried in the Lahar plot and her death certificate claims her mother was Dorothy Lahr (sic).

Oregonian
Saturday, August 14, 1926
Page 1
FALL KILLS WOMAN; POLICE SEEKING MAN
-
Estranged Husband Says Wife Was Murdered
-
Death Occurs After Spouse Has Dinner with Mate and Seeks Reconciliation
-
SPOKANE, WASH., Aug 13 (AP)

Investigation into the death here last night of Mrs. Bernadine Haynes, 22, who fell, or was pushed, from her room window in a downtown hotel, led the police to search tonight for a man with whom they believe she had been friendly here since she left her husband in Yakima July 24.

The husband, Charles Haynes who came here yesterday with their three-year-old daughter in an effort to effect a reconciliation, is firm in his belief that she was murdered, pointing to bruises on her face and the fact that witnesses declared she alighted on the back of her head when she fell from the window of her room.

Haynes told Frank Funkhouser, deputy prosecutor, and city detectives who questioned him this afternoon that when his wife left him at his apartments here last night after they had dinner together, she was in good spirits and had consented to return with him to Yakima, where her mother, Mrs. M. L. V. Kagy resides.

Deputy Prosecutor Funkhouser indicated a belief that Mrs. Haynes had committed suicide, while police officers said they believed she had fallen from the window. Persons who saw her fall from the window told conflicting stories today as to the manner in which she emerged.

Haynes first learned of his wife's death when he read the morning paper.

Police said the window shade was drawn and the room showed no sign of struggle.

A coroner's inquest has been set for tomorrow.
Thank You.

I don't know how to find these articles. And now I wonder if there is even more to the story as the husband (Charles Haynes)was sent to McNeil Island Prison in Jan. 1927 for Violation of the White Slave Traffic Act and served a year.

Bernadine (the victim) was supposedly the adopted daughter of my Great Aunt Elizabeth Kagy on my grandfather's side of my family. I mean, I'm not positive Bernadine was legally adopted. And then, curiously enough, Charles' second wife (Irene)married my Great Uncle (George Simpson)on my grandmother's side of the family after Charles' death in 1953.

What a small world. I think Bernadine's birth name is Lahar.

All my great aunts lived there and I think my Mom lived there for short period of her life. Enjoyed reading your post!
Howdy Susan,
Your memory is better than mine. I do not recall chatting before about my maternal line; however, I believe I can answer most of your questions since Dorothy June Halverson was my birth mother.

I say birth mother, because I was raised by my father and step mother.

Dorothy June Halverson was her adopted name.
Frederick Christopher Halverson and
Luella Phoebe Lovelace Halverson adopted her when she was about 2 years old.

Her birth name is Betty June DePonty.
Parents:
Johannes Pasquel DePonti
a.k.a. John Patrick DePonty
and
Lillian Frances Jackson

I lived several years with Nanny Halverson, as I called Luella, when Dad and Mom divorced and Dad was overseas in the Army when I was about 2-4 years old. I have many fond memories of her.

Fred died in 1948
Luella died in 1962
Jay William Foster, my Dad, died in 1988
Dorothy June died in 2005

Have you been in touch with Ralph Halverson?
he and I have chatted a few times over the years about genealogy. have never met in person.

as of 2010 his email address was:
Ralph Halverson
rhalv45@earthlink.net

if you are on Ancestry.com
his page for Emma:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9890120/person/-727807696

Good luck,
regards,
Karen Foster Montgomery
Looking for any descendants of Frank TURRELL and his wife Polly.
TERRELL is the original name.
Franks mother was born around 1830's in LAWRENCE CO INDIANA.
Her mothers name was Nancy TYRE/TYREE/TIREY, born about 1810 in N. C.,her grand-father being Thomas.
1 Her father was James Cameron,b. N. C., and they married around 1830 and had 2 girls. I don't know what happened to her husband, but next she married

2 Charles ANDREW DAVIS.
They had 1 son, Isham/Isam Davis, who married Parmelia.
Her was a merchant. They stayed in LAWRENCE CO.

3 William H. TERRELL was her third and LAST husband.
Their daughter, Susanna, is my great grandmother.

Apparently Malinda took on the name TERRELL.
Sometime around 1860 William & Nancy and whoever else came along, ended up in JASPER CO. IL. Some of them later moved to CRAWFORD CO., but there are OTHER Terrells there, even another William H., so be careful if you look there.

In 1868, Frank was born. Malinda is said to be married
to a CUMMINS, but I haven't confirm it yet. Perhaps he lived in INDIANA, and her pregnancy is WHY they moved.

Susannah married Michael Hamilton CARR in 1870, and that's MY connection to them.

In 1880. Malinda (Terrell/Turrell) and her son Frank were living in her mothers home. Her father had died not long before.
After that, Malinda and "Frank disappeared. Some say Malinda, Frank, and a whole bunch of other kids were living in Eel, CASS Co IND.in 1900.
In 1910, Frank & Polly TOWELL/Turrell/Terrell
(probably Mary is her real name, as Polly is nick-name for Mary.) are living in Pickaway, SHELBY CO. IL. Later cunsus showed him living in differnent places, including OREGON, which is where people THOUGHT he went. Finally he's found in Deer Park, SPOKANE, WASHIINGTON along with Polly and
Theodore.
Kids:
Harry E.
Minnie
Ethel
Harry I
Carrie
Ruth
Elizabeth.

She sounded like a fascinating person. I'd love to find a picture of her with her dogs, but so far, no luck online. Also, I don't know when or where she married Jack O'Rourke, (city directory had him as John T) but it was after she appeared in the 1910 census in San Francisco. Thanks for all your help.

The Spokane Chronicle had a better obit, still on January 11, 1915 page 13. The Turnbull Funeral Home Records are at the MAC The Museum of Arts And Culture here in Spokane, and they have the Turnbull index online on their website. Family Search has filmed her death certificate, so type in her name at Family Search and it will give you the film number to order her death certificate.

Charles

Thank you so much! That is the correct one. Garah was such an uncommon name, that it showed up as Sarah quite a bit. I did some research on Madam Wanda, and discovered she was a vaudeville performer with a troop of "educated English Coach dogs", ranging in size from 11 to 17 dogs in the various articles I found about her. She was my husband's great aunt. The family back in Iowa must not have approved, because nobody ever handed down any stories about her and the dog act. Such a fun relative! Thanks again!
