Look ups provided for births from 1893 - 1926 Skamania County

I came across a wonderful book in the Gresham, Oregon reference library by Daphne Ramsey, called "Skamania County Washington Births 1893-1926. She stated in the Preface of her book, that not all deaths were recorded during those days. She has about 39 pages listing names and information about parents. She must have spent many hours recording this information to help people find their ancestors. Bless her.

Let me know if I can help you.
Eellitta

Obituaries from the Skamania County Pioneer newspaper 1900-1929, by Homer and Alice Townsend

Hi,

In 1985 Homer and Alice Townsend published a 115 page booklet containing photocopies of obituaries from the Skamania County Pioneer newspaper from Stevenson, and covers 1900-1929. The booklet can be found at many libraries in this area.

I have gleaned information from the obituaries, created an Index of that data, and have posted it at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~westklic/skchistory.html

I hope this Index will be helpful to someone's research.

Jeff Elmer
Portland, OR.

The Skamania County Pioneer, Stevenson, WA., February 2, 1928, page 7
“Stevenson”

On Thursday morning, January 19, Nicholas Gregorius, one of the pioneers of the Carson Country, passed into the great beyond, from an attack of heart trouble from which he has been suffering for about six years. Mr. Gregorius was one of the old settlers of the county, having settled on a homestead near Sprague Landing at the mouth of Carson Creek, in Skamania county, in 1890. When the S.P. & S. railroad was built the right of way took most of the old place and after the town of Carson was formed he opened a small bakery there, which he operated for several years. Mr. Gregorius brought the first ice machine into Skamania county and built and operated the first ice plant, which is still in operation. Mr. Gregorius was born in Germany June 15, 1860 and emigrated to the United States at the age of 25 years. He settled in Kansas where he lived five years. Coming west to be located at The Dalles, Ore., then moved to Cascade Locks where he helped build the government locks. From there he came to Carson in 1890. He leaves surviving him, his widow, Mary Gregorius, a son, Joe Gregorius of Carson, Wash., and a sister and brother in Kansas City.

------------------

The Hood River News, Hood River, OR., February 3, 1928, page 3

PIONEER OF SKAMANIA COUNTY IS DEAD

On Thursday morning of last week Nicholas Gregorius, one of the pioneers of the Carson district of Skamania county passed into the great beyond from an attack of heart trouble from which he has been suffering for about six years. Mr. Gregorius, says the Pioneer, was one of the old settlers of the county, having settled on a homestead at Sprague Landing, at the mouth of Carson Creek, in 1890.
birth or marriage announcement

i am trying to find a birth announcement for my father in law, who passed on in 1983.
his name was Emil Delsol, and he was believed to be born in Stevenson Washington on September 24,1912.
His mother was Margurite Josephine Dieu Delsol, and his father was Adolph Delsol
it is said that his parents either ran or worked in a boarding house that catered to miners, and that on the day my father in law was born, his mother got up after delivering and made the boarders a meal. How true this is, we have no idea, but so the story goes.
It is possible that this boarding house might have been a brothel run by Margurite's sister Harriet. Another rumor in the family, but an interesting one.
if any one has any information on any of the above events, please send me a message at
drkstone97051@yahoo.com
thank you very much in advance

The Skamania County Pioneer, Stevenson, WA., January 26, 1923, page 1

LITTLE GIRL PASSES OVER

Verna Beatrice Foster, 3-years old and only child of Mr. and Mrs. Fenner Foster, died yesterday morning at 3 o’clock, cause of death being diphtheria. The child had been sick for about a week and the mother also contacted the disease but is improving. Little Verna was born in Stevenson Nov. 19, 1919 and was a lovable child. The parents have the sympathy of the community.

Health officials have taken steps to keep the disease from spreading and no other cases have thus far developed. The schools have been thoroughly fumigated as a precautionary measure. It is said the death of a little girl across the river occurred from the same disease.

This was posted for reference only. I am not related to, nor am I researching this family.

I am looking for a death obituary for Malcolm MacKinnon. He is buried in Skamania County District Cemetery-Iman
I am not sure of his death date but it is between 1920 and 1930. He was married to Martha L. Iman and she also is buried in the same cemetary.Where do I find the death certicate and better still an obituary for this gentleman. He has relatives in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada where he grew up. The information on MAlcolm seems difficult to find because he moves to The United States after 1881. He actually was born in the States as well although he lived the first 20 years of his life in Baileys Brook in Pictou Co.Thank you for any support.

Florence MacDonald

A post here by my cousin Jim Windsor has perpetuated an error that my aunt made on Julia Ann Babcick, her last name is not Babbit, the 1860 Census for Jefferson, Louisa, Iowa shows here as Julia Ann Foster age 29 born in NY wife of Fenner Foster age 36 also born in NY her maiden name as Babcock. With children Allie Jane (Annie) age 7 born in Wis, Fremont Foster age 3 Born in Wis. and Ira issac age 1 born in Wis. This all matches information we already had on this family with exception to birthplace of Ira which we show as tootsboro, Iowa.

My husband is descended from his daughter Mabel Ruth and knows of a sister Haida, who apparently left with their mother before the 1900 census and subsequent 1901 divorce

The Mt. Adams Sun, Bingen, WA., May 12, 1950, page 6

NORMA ANN NIX

Christian Science Services were held Sunday, May 7 in Gardner's Chapel in Stevenson for Nora Ann Nix of Stevenson, Washington, who passed on on Friday, May 5 in the Hood River hospital. For the past two years she has been in ill health and part time hospitalized. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, April 8, 1877 and passed on at the age of 73.

First landed on Washington side of the Columbia River at the age of 12 years when she came with her family and settled on a farm known as the Shepherd Ranch, which later became the town of Stevenson. She attended school at the old school house on Kanaka Creek.

She and Jeff Nix were married at her home in 1893 when she was 15 years old. They lived on a flat boat on the Columbia River and transported wood to The Dalles. The name of the flat boat was The Mayflower.

Jeff Nix built and operated the first hotel in Stevenson. Here their first child, a girl, was born in 1895. This child, now Florence Foster of Portland, Oregon, was also the first child to be born in Stevenson. Before the birth of their second child, a boy in 1896, LeRoy Nix, deceased, they left the hotel and settled on a farm 1½ miles from Stevenson. Here the rest of the children were born and raised, there being ten in all. She had 17 grandchildren and 17 great grand children.

She leaves many friends and relatives to mourn her passing, as she was loved by all who knew her. She is survived by one brother, Bruce Bevans of Portland, Oregon and the following children: Florence Foster, Dorthea Bert and Marie Silver all of Portland; Arlene Entner of Seattle, Wn.; Arthur Nix, Waldport, Oregon and John Nix, Edna Maine, Lydia Douglas and Ellen Richards all of Stevenson.

This was posted for reference only.

The Klickitat County Agriculturist, Goldendale, WA., April 29, 1927, page 5

OBITUARY

Mrs. H. Seymour Hall died at her home in Stevenson after a long illness April 10th. The Halls resided in the west end of Klickitat for a number of years. Mr. Hall was a candidate for county engineer, but was defeated by George W. Borden, -- who is now state highway engineer of Nevada.

Mrs. Hall had been a patient sufferer from rheumatism and other complications for the past year or more. At times her condition improved, says the Pioneer of Stevenson, improved only to suffer a relapse and be compelled to retreat to her bed for another long siege of suffering. During the past week few weeks she has been growing gradually worse until the end came Easter Morning.

The floral tributes which banked the casket bespoke the high esteem and love in which she was held by all who knew her and the sympathy of the entire community is extended to Mr. Hall and her daughter Mrs. Gold Hunt.

This was posted for reference only. Growing despondent over ill health the girl ended her life early in the morning by sending a revolver bullet through their temple causing instant death. The tragedy occurred about four in the morning, and was discovered about seven.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church, Rev. J.C. Lawrence officiating at the church and at the cemetery. Robert Sly, Angus Lindsay, Herman Hapgood, Richard Christensen, Wm. The church was literally banked with floral offerings from school friends, lodges, business men and friends of the family paying their last tribute of regard to the young girl.

Miss Thelma was in her second year at the high school where she had a large circle of friends among the younger students. She was born at The Dalles August 11, 1914 and moved to Stevenson with her parents in 1918. She is survived by her parents, one brother, Zearl and one sister, Auderine. Interment was on a peaceful spot in the Odd Fellows Cemetery overlooking the waters of the Columbia where the pangs of sorrow will be forgotten but the memory of a loving daughter will live on forever.

Out of town relatives and friends called to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Perdue of The Dalles; Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins of Portland; George Potts of The Dalles and Mrs. Zakery of Hood River.

This was posted for reference only.
I'm trying to find out where St. Cloud's Ranch is. I have a death certificate for Pluma St. Ores Mackey, who died in 1920 in Portland, OR. Prindle, WA was first written on her death certificate and then the Prindle part was crossed out and St. Clouds Ranch was written in.
Looking for info about Elmer E James and his children, of Cape Horn, Skamania County, and later of Oregon. Elmer died in a logging accident in December, 1918. Buried in MtPleasant Cemetery. I am researching to confirm if this Elmer E James, of Cape Horn, could be child of William T James & Mary Stark James, of Erie County, Ohio, born about 1860. I Have confirmed that the Elmer E James I am seeking worked in Cascade Locks in 1887-1888.

GARWOOD Family

I am researching the GARWOOD family in the counties of Washington, Multnomah, Polk, Douglas, Jackson, Union, and Skamania. I have a great deal of research for the family here in Oregon and in Washington but have a couple spots where some help would be appreciated. Namely the parents of Louisa EATON who married William GARWOOD in Washington County 24 Dec 1874. William is in Skamania County in 1885 and 1887. Also the place of death of William's father (also named William). The senior William was married to Maria HUMPHREYS and Hannah CULBERTSON nee HUMPHREYS. Many of the GARWOOD family moved back and forth between Washington and Skamania Counties.

This query was originally posted on the Skamania County GenWeb site on 17 Jan 2000, it was moved to this GenConnect Query Board on 5 July 2000.

I'm searching for information on the Shields Family. George Shields, born late 1800's. Wife Sherry (maiden name Gilbert) Shields, born 01/02/1898. At the time of their marriage I (think) they lived in Arizona. George & Sherry had at least one son, Michael Donald Shields, born apx. 1931. George Shields died at an early age (year unknown). Sherry remarried changing her last name to Caston. Sherry died in Seattle, WA. on 06/05/74. Michael Donald Shields would now be in his 70's. It's possible that he could be residing in Skamania County area.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Judy
