Hello Ingrid,
For some reason, I was never notified that you posted a query requesting information. I am sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you. I looked in the book and I did not find any Briggs mentioned. I also checked the Washington Digital Archives that listed many Briggs, but I did not find a child born in 1919 as Margrett was. I noticed that there is a son in the household (possibly Oskar) who is indexed as being 4 months old born in Colorado and Margrett is indexed to be 2 months born in Washington. That doesn't seem to make sense.

You might search the Washington Digital Archives to see if you might find something:

http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/

I am sorry that I wasn't able to help you,
Eellitta

First, obits back in that time period were not as common as today, unless a person was rich, famous, infamous or had died to a newsworthy accident or homicide. A true obit was written by a reporter. Many family members did not want to pay for an in-depth notice for many reasons, cost, the member didn't live in the area long enough, people that would have known they died-probably did, etc. Or, the person lived in a remote area...such as Stevenson, where anyone knowing the departed would know.. There could be a funeral notice, but it wasn't much more than an advertisement for the funeral home.

The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary.
Re: Merrit S.Brown 1912 Carson,Skamania Co.WA

You may have this already, but it confirms the added info

The 1910 Census for English, Iowa County, Iowa
Merrit S, age 66, born in Ohio to both parents born in Virginia, US Post Master
Mary F, dau, age 33, born in Iowa, Teacher
Carrie S, 30, IA, Assistant Post Master
Maud E, 23, IA, no employment
Norvil (as transcribed, but was Norval) S, son age 18, IA., farmer
--also same page, up on census 2nd family.
Bentley B. Brown, age 39, married 13 years
Nan, wife, age 36, mother of 1, not living.

Your info does no answer a lot of questions. He (and son-in-law) signed a land deed for Iowa County. Who was buying the land, or were they selling it. If they were buying, they probably intended to return. If selling, all that document shows is that they were in Skamania County in 1912. There is nothing in the land deed to prove anything, that they lived there for any period of time, or why they were there.

You wrote he was living in the home of s-i-l and his wife AVO. Do you have information that Avo was there also?

I looked in the Washington Death Certificate index but found nothing on Merrit, or the McMillan's.

But, in your other postings there are some clues. It appears that David and Avo moved to Oregon, where they had children in Portland and lived in Lebanon. You obtained the obit for David L (the son) in July:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ore...

This obit indicates the son of David and Avo, had a wife and children. Are you in contact with them now? Ask the surviving wife, or even the children where Meritt might be buried. They are your best witnesses at this point.

Your search for Merrit begins in Portland with the surviving family. Then it goes back to Lebanon (Linn County) where David and Avo lived. It goes back again to Portland where David and Avo had their children.

In Lebanon and Portland, you need someone to look at the City Directories (Polks). A city directory is a book having the persons living in a populated area (city, county). It shows the persons in alphabetical order. It shows the spouse in parenthesis. If the spouse is also employed both are listed in the alphabetical order. If any other family members in the household are employed, they are shown. Some later directories showed children as "student". It shows their type of employment, sometimes where they worked. It shows their address. Later editions included a cross reference by address to show just the owner. This is helpful to find neighbors names. Later ones had phone numbers in order.

Begin looking at the directory for 1920 and go back in time in Portland to see when David and Avo first appear living there. That will put a time line back in time. If they were living there in 1913, then you have a short period of time back to the 1912 document. Also have them look for Merrit Brown. He just might show up there also.

Portland is in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington Counties:

For a volunteer, first try rootsweb message boards for Portland, Oregon.
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ore...

The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness has many volunteers. This page set for Washington County:
http://www.raogk.org/oregon4.htm
Read the guidelines BEFORE you contact.

Where is Meritt? You may have information that isn't here or your other postings, but:
1. Died in Carson?
2. Moved to Oregon to be near Avo and David, or with them?
3. Returned to Iowa to be with the family there?

Norval Brown, son of Meritt, brother of Avo, was living in Portland in the 1920 census. He was living with Carrie, 41; and, Maud E, age 34. So, except for Mary, whose location is unknown, there might not have been family in Iowa by 1920.
--In the 1930 Census, Norval is living with David and Avo. Son, David L is 9.

I found your family tree posted online, now after looking for Norval. For others: he died 9 July 1955 in California. Avo also died in California.

Ron Bestrom

The 1910 Census for English Township, Iowa County, Iowa:
David L. McMillan, age 26, born in Canada to both parents born in Scotland
Avo L, age 26, born in Iowa to both parents born in Iowa.

That part was the easiest. I don't speculate or guess on "same name" persons without some leading criteria. The McMillan's that you identify, "possibly" the same as above, made their way from Iowa to Carson in the next two years.

The "Merrit S. Brown" that you identify has no search criteria. First, from what source did you find your person living in Carson, WA in 1912? Do you have his date of birth? That is ESPECIALLY important whenever you post an inquiry. Identify any siblings, parents, place of birth, any information you can provide on a person creates more possibility the person might be found.

The other "researcher"... identified a Merrett "E" Brown. That person was Merrett Emil Brown, born October 27, 1899. (Based on the World War I Draft Registration Card Image database). In 1917 was living at 220 ?, in Glendale, LA County, California.

If you have more information, please post.

Ron Bestrom

I looked up the births of Marshall children in Skamania County, Washington. I found the following:

Marshall (male), b. July 23, 1919, Carson, father: H.F. Marshall, age 51, born Denmark, rancher, Mother: Sarah Jane Wilkins, age 42, born: West Virginia, 9 children, 7 living. (Thomas C. Avary, M.D.)

Marshall, Janet Elizabeth, born Nov. 28, 1922, Stevenson. Father: Eugene F. Marshall, age 27, born Maryland, farmer. Mother: Elizabeth E. Tookey, age 30, born Nebraska, 1 child, 1 living. (Thomas C. Avary, M.D.)

I hope this helps a little. I live in Oregon but there is a book at my local library that lists births from 1893 -1926 for Skamania County.
Eellitta

I came across a wonderful book in the Gresham, Oregon reference library by Daphne Ramsey, called "Skamania County Washington Births 1893-1926. She stated in the Preface of her book, that not all deaths were recorded during those days. She has about 39 pages listing names and information about parents. She must have spent many hours recording this information to help people find their ancestors. Bless her.

Let me know if I can help you.
Eellitta

Hi,

I hope this helps.

---------------

The Skamania County Pioneer, Stevenson, WA., October 28, 1988, page 3

SERVICES HELD FOR HERBERT ALLYN "BERT" MILLER,
RETIRED POSTMASTER AND WWI VETERAN

The flag at the Stevenson Post Office was lowered to half-staff Friday as funeral services were held for Herbert Allyn `Bert" Miller, World War I veteran and retired postmaster, who died at his home in Stevenson Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the age of 91. His death was attributed to congestive heart failure.

Mr. Miller had been hospitalized at the Veterans Hospital in Portland for many weeks and two of his sons, Richard "Dick" Miller of Guatemala and Charles B. “Chuck" Miller, of Stevenson, had been driving into Portland with their mother Bessie each day. Mr. Miller was brought home at his request and on the day of his death his son Dick, was enroute to Guatemala where he serves as a missionary.

The family made contact with Dick Miller the next night and at his mothers urging he continued on to his mission.

Mr. Miller was born April 5, 1897 in Goldendale, the son of William Edwin and Abbie Jane Allyn Miller.

He was "born again" at age 12 while standing by his home on Vancouver Avenue in Stevenson when he overheard the music from a nearby tent meeting.

He graduated from Stevenson High School in 1916, and just five days before the United States entered World War I, he joined the Navy. Serving as postmaster aboard ship, he made 26 trips across the Atlantic.

He raised silver foxes for a time and served as postmaster of Stevenson prior to his marriage to Bessie Jane Nelson of Carson on Nov. 20,1926.

Following a fire that destroyed their home in 1933, Bert and Bessie ventured into gold mining in Southern Oregon, but they returned in 1934 to live in Carson where Bert worked in the Carson post office. For a short while, he managed an apple orchard at Underwood and tried his hand in the boat business before again returning to Carson and accepting a position at the post office in Stevenson.

He received three presidential appointments to the office of postmaster, sighed by Calvin Coolidge in l925, Herbert Hoover in 1929 and Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954.

Following his retirement in 1967 at the age of 70, he continued to pursue his interests in gold mining, rock hounding and lapidary work. His deep love for children was evident to all, and in recent years he prepared special gifts and gospel tracts of his personal testimony for the neighborhood children on Halloween.

His well-known generosity and godly life were a blessing to all who knew him. For the last year his health and strength began to fail, but he remained cheerful and uncomplaining.

Besides his wife Bessie, Mr. Miller is survived by three daughters, Patsy Hull of Kennewick, Mary Ann Galloway of Portland and Helen Zimmerman of Colfax; three sons; Herbert E. Miller of Riverside, California, Richard A. Miller of Guatemala, and Charles B. Miller of Stevenson; two sisters, Mary Marsh of Caliente, Nevada and Dorothy Simmons of Stevenson; 23 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Stevenson Friday with the Rev. J. David Zimmerman and the Rev. Bill West officiating. Interment followed with military honors at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Gardner's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Contributions to the Carson Bible Church are suggested.
Hi,

There are 2 public libraries in Skamania County, both part of the Ft. Vancouver Regional Library system. One is at North Bonneville, but the larger branch is at Stevenson http://www.fvrl.org/aboutus/stevenson_main.htm where they have the local newspaper, The Skamania County Pioneer, on microfilm.

The Interpretive Center at Stevenson contains the holdings of the Historical Society http://www.columbiagorge.org/

There is no "Genealogy" society in the county, other than what records the Clark County Genealogical Society, and other volunteers, have compiled - cemetery, census, obituary, births, marriages, etc.

A county courthouse office should have business license records, which should show the "legal name" of the facility. This might make it easier to search for at the state level. It was probably a private business, and determining who the owners were should make it easier to locate any existing records.

When and where the auto accident occurred would help a volunteer locate any newspaper article(s).
Hi,

In 1985 Homer and Alice Townsend published a 115 page booklet containing photocopies of obituaries from the Skamania County Pioneer newspaper from Stevenson, and covers 1900-1929. The booklet can be found at many libraries in this area.

I have gleaned information from the obituaries, created an Index of that data, and have posted it at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~westklic/skchistory.html

I hope this Index will be helpful to someone's research.

Jeff Elmer
Portland, OR.

The Skamania County Pioneer, Stevenson, WA., February 2, 1928, page 7
“Stevenson”

On Thursday morning, January 19, Nicholas Gregorius, one of the pioneers of the Carson Country, passed into the great beyond, from an attack of heart trouble from which he has been suffering for about six years. Mr. Gregorius was one of the old settlers of the county, having settled on a homestead near Sprague Landing at the mouth of Carson Creek, in Skamania county, in 1890. When the S.P. & S. railroad was built the right of way took most of the old place and after the town of Carson was formed he opened a small bakery there, which he operated for several years. Mr. Gregorius brought the first ice machine into Skamania county and built and operated the first ice plant, which is still in operation. Mr. Gregorius was born in Germany June 15, 1860 and emigrated to the United States at the age of 25 years. He settled in Kansas where he lived five years. Coming west to be located at The Dalles, Ore., then moved to Cascade Locks where he helped build the government locks. From there he came to Carson in 1890. He leaves surviving him, his widow, Mary Gregorius, a son, Joe Gregorius of Carson, Wash., and a sister and brother in Kansas City.

------------------

The Hood River News, Hood River, OR., February 3, 1928, page 3

PIONEER OF SKAMANIA COUNTY IS DEAD

On Thursday morning of last week Nicholas Gregorius, one of the pioneers of the Carson district of Skamania county passed into the great beyond from an attack of heart trouble from which he has been suffering for about six years.
I looked once more in the book but I did not see any Eddings mentioned in the births from 1893 to 1926.
