I am looking for info on the Rethlefsens who lived at Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. In particular, I am looking for info about Matthias, or Martin, Rethlefsen, who is indicated in our records to have been the second white man on the island. I don't have his dates offhand, but I can look them up if that would help me locate info.

POW/MIA Korean War, San Juan Co. MCCLELLAN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave San JUan County, Washington as his home of record.

Soldier: MAURICE NOLAN MCCLELLAN
Born: 1931 Caucasian
Date of loss: December 1, 1950, POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 46 families in Washington that have not been located. There is one family from San Juan County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Hi list,
Am researching WOOLLETT (various spellings), Bernard Casimir, wife Florence V WOOLLETT, nee JOHNSON and their sons, Bernard John and Charles Basil. Both the sons were born in Lopez Island in 1898, 1899. They are all in the 1900 US census there. Parents were married in New Whatcom in 1898. Bernard C died in Bellingham in 1900 a couple of months after the 1900 census. What I am looking for is any other information that may have been printed about them while they were there. Florence was a teacher from a family of teachers and Bernard is stated as a farmer. I think they may have met in Texas, then appeared in Lopez Island.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for info on the Stevens family. Henry & Jenny STEVENS are on the 1900 Census for Lopez Precinct, San Juan Co. However, they are not on the 1910. Henry's brother Frank is on both 1900 & 1910. There is a headstone in a Lopez Island Cemetery for a Sophia Stevens (b. 1833 d. 1908) (Henry's mother was named Sophia). No record of any Sophia Stevens on the WA State Death Index however. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of these Stevens ppl. is encouraged to contact me :)
Thanks very much, Leroy Sisk

Looking for descendents/information about Maurice Johnson. Born in Sweden in 1858. Left his family in Hastings, Minnesota and moved west at some point. Lived in Alaska where two sons--Arthur and Lewis (Louis)--were born. Wife #2 was Rena. 1910 census reports them in Orcas Precinct. In 1920 Rena and the boys were in Deer Harbor. No death information on Maurice. In 1930 census Arthur was married to Jessie E. with two sons Maurice A and Melvin E. I think Rena died in 1953. The eldest Maurice Johnson was the brother of my greatgrandmother, Christin Nilsson Lindberg.

Elizabeth Tuson Searles and Family - Roche Harbor

I am looking for information about my gg grandmother Elizabeth Tuson (Pearson) Searles and her family. Elizabeth was married to William George Searles and they and their family moved to Roche Harbor in about 1895. The had 8 children: Raymond, Walter, Daisy, Marion, Mildred, George, Sidney (my grandfather), and Douglas. According to his military records, Douglas, was born at Roche Harbor in 1897.

Elizabeth was a teacher at Roche Harbor and, I believe was the Superitendent of Schools for a short period of time (according to our family oral history). I believe that William worked at a wearhouse along the waterfront. Elizabeth died in 1899 and is buried at Roche Harbor near the Mausoleum. I believe that the family left Roche Harbor shortly after her death (~ 1900).

I would very much like to obtain a copy of Douglas' birth certificate and Elizabeth's death certificate. However, I would appreciate any information on any member of the family.

Thanks

Jerry Sehlke
Idaho Falls, Idaho

Since their parents were living I don't know why they would have a legal guardian at the time of their grandfather George Heidenrich's death. Any help would be most appreciated.

They moved to Prosser, WA when they were about 80. They both died there in 1906 and were buried in Seattle, WA. I am trying to find out why they left MN to go to WA. I would also like to try to find out which cemetery they are buried in.

I am looking for death information on Patrick John (JP) McGill and his wife Alfrida (Frida) Augusta McGill (nee Brown). I located them living at San Juan Island, San Juan County, WA in 1910 along with two of their three sons Alton B McGill (age 5) and Leo M B McGill (age 3). Leo was born in Washington State according to the census. The couple had their 3rd son, James McGill in about 1911 in Washington. I have a possible death date for Alfrida of 15 Feb 1912. The kids are found in the 1920 census living with Patrick's mother Winifred McGill in Minnesota.
I checked the San Juan County cemeteries but there are no McGill's listed. I am not new to genealogy but new to Washington State resources. Any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you,
Laura Schroeder
Minnesota
P.S. Patrick was born about 1879 in Canada, his wife Alfrida Brown was born in 7 January 1880 in Sweden.

William H. Townsend moved to Lopez Island about 1890 with his wife Margaret [Mollie ] and children. Several more children were born and attended school there. Sometime before 1910 the family moved. Margaret is not listed in the 1910 Census so I presume she died on Lopez. William's mother Loucinda Cummings was listed in the 1900 Lopez Census living with him and I believe she is also buried there. Any info would be appreciated.

Sarah was known as a "saloon buster". Sarah died some time prior to 8 Jun 1900. Ernest, along with Mike Adams and others pioneered the fruit industry on the islands. He was also a surveyor for the county. The couple lost two daughters to Cholera in 1893. Ernest and Emma met on the Oregon Trail and married in The Dalles. Many of the family are buried in the old pioneer cemetary near the new recreation fields. Ernest's surveying chain is on display in the museum at East Sound.

Hi,
I am the granddaughter of Alfred G. Middleton and Vivian P. Bell Middleton. I understand that Alfred's parents: Alfred G. and Sarah Humrich Middleton lived in Friday Harbor; as did Vivian's father, James Bell and her grandparents, Peter and Mary Kirk. I am looking for any information, particularly family stories that might tell me who these people were. I grew up in Alaska and didn't have an opportunity to get to know them. Thank you.

Minnesota 1900 but she divorced Charles A REED between 1900 and 1915
My guess she married Mr. Glenn CADE. She died possibly of Brights disease around the time of her daughter Gladys' marriage.
I heard Rose's husband was the chief of police of Bellingham or of the fire department. I find the signatures of the CADE's on the Certificate of marrage for my grandmother Gladys REED of San Juan Co. marrying Allen M. DUNCANSON of Frendale, Whatcom Co. Oct. 2, 1915 at Bellingham. also there are the signatures of Lodema A. Bandy( sister in law to Rose BANDY) Susan M.
Looking for info on Croghan family members who left Fort Victoria possibly in 1870s and 1880s,to live and work in San Juan Islands. Ellen Croghan (Crogan) married John Little and had 9 children, all born in USA (San Juan Islands). Her brother Arthur Croghan worked for a time in the lime quarries for Hudson Bay Co. during that time. I believe another brother, William Croghan, also may have worked there. It appears they all returned to Victoria by 1890.

I (think) at the time of their marriage they lived in Arizona. George & Sherry had at least one son, Michael Donald Shields, born apx. 1931. George Shields died at an early age (year unknown). Sherry remarried changing her last name to Caston. Sherry died in Seattle, WA. on 06/05/74. Michael Donald Shields would now be in his 70's. It's possible that he could be living in San Juan County. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Judy
