There are pictures and information on Lucy in Karen Jones Lamb's book Native American Wives of San Juan Settlers. Karen lives on Decatur island and you can write to her there. She has the books for sale. I sometimes see copies in used book stores in Anacortes. The book says Lucy's Indian name was Ontonna. She was born at Quadra Bay and was of Saanitch blood on her fathers side. Her mother was Nu-Was-K-La or Nu Wask Lak and they lived on Speiden Island. Lucy married Robert Smith who was born in Launden, England and served in the Royal Marines Light Infantry for 8 years. The Pig War brought him to the San Juan Islands with the British. He died when his little daughter Mary was just a child. When Lucy later married and moved away, Mary stayed with her grandmother. "In history books Mary has been called the Queen of Stuart Island."
There is a lot more about them in the book. Also a photo of the Mary and Ed Chevalier family.email me and I can give you Karen's phone number.
