Thank you for your information. I do know about the listing of Sylvester Lewis with Elizabeth as they are my grandparents. The information on Sylvester is so mixed up. My mother said he was born in White Fish Montana about 1898. But I found out that he was born in Kansas, White church which I have not been able to find information. Since White Church is not around anymore and that most of the records burned down that had the 1890 information. On his marrage Cirt. He put down Joseph H. Lewis and LuLu C. O'Brien as his parents. Father born in Kansas and Lulu born in Kentuckey. I just like the information on LuLu C as I think that is his mother that she remarried. My grandfather didn't talk much about himself. He did work at the Grand Cooley dam and invented the paint that they put on the generators. He was a painter in Spokane before his death. I have lots of information on my grandmother but hardly anything on my grandfather side. I don't even know that he had brother's and sisters. The ones I could ask are all dead or they don't know anything.

Hi Sandra,
An Evelyn E. Millward b. 26 July 1931, Last Residence=Ceres, Stanislaus, CA 95307, died 26 Jan 2005. Her soc. sec. # was assigned in WA before 1951. Source: Social Security Death Index, www.ancestry.com.

An obituary can be a great source of information. If you don't know where to look for an obit in Stanislaus Co., CA, you can post a query on the Stanislaus Co. Message Board. After I receive the obit, I use www.whitepages.com to find current contact info for the survivors listed in the obit.
Since you have only posted in Spokane Co and Pend Oreille Co, and only on this family, let me first suggest: When you post, post what information you have on those being researched. Their dates of birth are ALWAYS important, otherwise a researcher must start from scratch. Identify if you already have census information, obit information etc. It saves a lot of explanation and research time. And...before you can find information on the parents, you MUST fully explore the child or the grandchildren.

The Washington Archives:
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/default.aspx
has an image of the marriage certificate for Sylvester H. Lewis and Clara E. Harris, marriage 3 July 1913 in Spokane.
Click on above link, enter his name.
In the next window click on their names.
In the next window view the image on the right.

--The information matches that which you identified. Lulu born in Kentucky, Joseph in Kansas. Sylvester was living in Newport, WA, which is in Pend Oreille County. He was born in Kansas.

--This site has two listings for a Lulu Lewis marrying in Spokane County, one in 1896, one in 1906. There is NO proof either is the same person as being married to Joseph Lewis. There is no date of birth, place of birth, etc.

The 1900 Census for Almota, Whitman Co., Washington
Joseph Lewis (Middle initial covered), born June 1859 in Indiana to father born in Virginia, mother in Ohio
Sylvester, born Dec 1890 born in Kansas to both parents born in Indiana.
--While census enumerator mistakes were common, this census shows both parents of this Sylvester born in Indiana, the marriage record for Sylvester shows as above.

The 1920 Census for Spokane, Spokane Co, WA
Sylvester H. Lewis, age 27(29?), born in Idaho to both parents born in US
Bessie E, age 27(29?), born in Wisconsin to both parents born in WI
Donald, born in Idaho
Merle, born in WA.

The 1930 Census for Opportunity, Spokane Co, WA
Sylvester H. Lewis, born in Kansas to both parents born in Kansas
Bessie, born in Wisconsin to both parents born in WI
Donald, 14, born in Idaho
Merle 11, born in WA
Loraine (sic) 9, WA
Jeanne E, 1, WA

At this point, there is not enough clear data to prove this family.

Family trees posted on Ancestry.com, if you have ancestry:

1. http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?pid=-1701239553&amp...=
This tree posted by "DougCampbell1954" shows Henry Sylvester Lewis obrn 1891, died 8 Apr 1958 in Spokane. He was married to Elizabeth Clara Harris 1889-October 5, 1958 in Spokane. No parents identified for Henry. I sent a message through Ancestry for this person to read this thread.
Merle Lewis, son, born 1919 in Spokane, died 17 Sep 1993 in Spokane.
--This person had a second family tree, no additional data on parents.

The World War I draft registration image database shows Sylvester born December 8, 1892. I've found about half of the year of birth wrong by one year in this database. He was "probably" born 1891, in what appears to be Whitechurch, Kansas.

Since Sylvester was born in Kansas, do you have research in Kansas to identify his birth, birth certificate, parents or their marriage information? In this research, we have "Lulu O'Brien", but no information as to her place of birth, date of birth, siblings, etc. Basically, because of this, we can not identify if any of the Lulu Lewis marriages are her's or another of that name. We can't identify if she died, or other factors. Again, identify what you know about a person.

If you do not have an obituary, you can try to obtain Sylvester's, his wife Elizabeth's, or his son Merle's. All in Spokane:

--- The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks. I'd suggest individual requests for each person.

Ron Bestrom
Hi,
I found Joseph and Sylvester in 1900 in Almota, Whitman Co., WA.
Joseph, b. IN June 1859, divorced, fruit farmer.
Sylvester W., b. KS Dec 1890.

I found Lulu's marriage certificate to A. J. Morrow.
A. J. Morrow of County of Spokane married Lulu C. Lewis of Spokane County March 15, 1906 in Spokane. One witness was W. F. O'Brien. Source: Washington State Digital Archives. You can print a copy of the cert by going to this web site.

I searched Ancestry, FamilySearch and Washington Digital Archives and didn't find anything else about Lulu or Joseph. The Whitman County Genealogical Society, www.rootsweb.com/~wawcgs/res.htm does research for a reasonable fee.

I am a Turnbull descending from the Turnbulls that came from Roxburghshire area of the Scottish Lowlands. I have been doing a lot of geneologh research about the Turnbulls that immigrated from Scotland to America in 1839. They arrived via Canada and followed through to their establishment in Elmira and Kewanee, Illinois, and then on to Nebraska where I hail from. Have been able to trace them back to 1762 to a Robert Alexander Turnbull the senior. Many of the Turnbull names were constantly repeated, such as Robert, John, and William. Possibly I may have some info that would help you. Currently on vacation visiting daughter and grandkids in Maryland. Did have the opportunity to visit the Elmira Illinois Village cemetery and found numerous gravesites of our Turnbull relatives.....Some may have been yours.....Not anywhere close to completing my transcripts of the Turnbull ancestory, but will be glad to share with you when it is complete.

Irv and C.J.
Hi Terri,
I met you online before when you sent me info on the Cole family. These are my great grandparents. While it is true that Nellie was not my grandfather's mother by birth, she was the only mother he knew, so all of his brothers and sisters were full to him and considered as such by the rest of us descended from Thomas D MacArthur. The issue with the name change mainly came about because my grandfather Thomas was always getting his father's mail, so he changed his to MacArthur. Various relatives spell it both ways. Here is what you are looking for, I don't have the dates handy at the moment, but will look them up. (These are not in order of age or dtae of marriage)

Grace married Clarence Weaver
Renie married Lewis Weaver (brother of Clarence)
(Renie’s full name was Nellie Irene, but she never used either name, preferring to be known as Renie instead)
Margaret (Peggy) married “Poppy” Vigue
Lillian married Lorne Reed
Charles Ronald (Ron) married Jean Anderson
George married June Olin
Bill married Violet Chapman
Phil married Emma Carlson
Laura married Paul Newman
Janis,
Thank you so much for the information.
Is there an online site that is available to look at the old newspaper articles. If so I will look up marriage info perhaps. I never had last names for the girls and have no idea of who the boys married. A couple of them but not all. I had contacted a few relatives in the area but they were all related to Thomas first wife.
Anyway, thank you for the info. will do some more digging and if I can't find anything I will contact you again. It is so nice to find someone like you to help. If you need any info in the Cape Girardeau area of Missouri I can try to find it for you. I also get to the Onaway Area of Michigan once a year if you need anything there.
Terrie

Carlton P. HYDE (aka Carl P. or C.P.) appeared twice in the 1920 U.S. Washington Census. Once in Pend Orielle County and once in Kitsap County. He was age 68 in both (if they were the same person?). He may have had a daughter Nellie A. (CHRISTY, but not sure).

He moved to Thurston Co. WA from Jackson Co WI with his elderly mother and some siblings. I have found him in early WA State Censuses and the 1900 & 1910 U.S. Washington Census.

He was son of Joel Hyde and Sally (aka Sallie) Newton. Siblings in WA were Truman, Francis (Frank), Samuel, Lois (SNABEL, BROWN), Emma Alice (EVERSON, NICHOSON).

Please add responses if you have further info on Carlton. I write bio sketches on the descendants of Reuben and Eunice Manley and put them on my free website at www.myronnewton.com . I am presently working to expand the HYDE line of this family. Thanks.
The 1920 Census for Big Bottom, Lewis County, Washington
John H. Randall, age 41, born in Minnesota to father born in Maine, mother in New York, farmer
Willa N. born in Missouri to both parents born in Kentucky
Maybelle J, age 7, born in Washington
Clarice E, age 4 8/12, born in WA.
--Were Maybelle and Clarice adopted after the death of their father, or are these the wrong ones?

I also find a User submitted tree on Ancestry.com that shows:
Maybelle Dettman, born 12 Dec 1912 to Rudolph Rhinehart Dettman. He died 1918 and Clarice Castle, born 16 Mar 1885, died 19 May 1946. They married on 11 May 1903 and had six children: Ralph, Clarice Ann, Eva, Marguerite, Lenore, Maybelle.
--Maybelle married Beryl Mace Lynch, born 19 Mar 1911 in Ewan, WA. The data indicates they had eight children.
---This data comes from Ancestry.com's "One World Tree". It did not show the name of the tree contributor. One World Tree is also RIFE with errors. It is a database system that joins data from submitted family trees, so, if one tree is wrong, it makes the entire database wrong. So, I can NOT guarantee any of the above is accurate.

The 1930 Census fo Ewan, Whitman County, Washington
Beryl M. Lynch, age 19, born in Washington
Maybelle Lynch, age 17, born in Washington to both parents born in Wisconsin
Darel D. Lynch, brother, age 17.

The World War I Draft Registration image database shows: "Ralph Richard Dettman", born April 17, 1882, married to Clara Ann Dettman, living at 702 East 35th, Tacoma, Pierce County, WA.

The Tacoma Library has an online obituary listing of those published in the Tacoma News Tribune. http://search.tpl.lib.wa.us/obits/
Ralph R. Dettman, died 18 Nov 1918, obit on 19 Nov 1918, page 10 in the Tacoma Daily Ledger, on 19 nov 1918, page 3 in the Tacoma News Tribune.
You can order an obit free via: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx
--It also shows a Ralph Dettman JR on 23 August 1966, page 38.
---If the library service doesn't find the obituary, let me know and I'll visit the library in Tacoma and get the obit from microfilm. When you email the WA Library, make sure you identify WHERE and WHEN the obit was published.
---also note, the family tree data shows the father as Rudolph Rheinhart Dettman, died 1918, the Tacoma death in 1918 was Ralph R. Dettman. "Possibly" the same, but perhaps not.

The Washington Birth Index 1907-1919
22 Aug (no year); Father Ralph R. Dettman and Clara Castle, daughter Clareian (as transcribed could be Clarice?).
29 March 1914, same parents, son, "Dettman, Dettman"
1 May 1917, same parents, daughter Elizabeth Dettman.

I know this info does not identify the Kalispel Indian Reservation. BUT, they are NOT in Montana. The town of Kalispel is in Montana, but the Pend Oreille tribe was a tribe of Native Americans that lived in the Pend Oreill area of Washington. Your grandmother could have very well been born in that area, but, based on the information above, she "probably" wasn't Native American. The reservation was small. If you are not familar with Pend Oreille County...it is beautiful. My own home county of Stevens and my grandparents homestead bordered this area. Lots of lakes, forested land, mountains, etc.

Try this search engine: http://www.alltheweb.com/advanced?cs=utf-8
---I also suggest searching under the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the current website:
http://www.doi.gov/bureau-indian-affairs.html is still mostly out of service due to the Federal lawsuit in the Cobell Case. This case has reached dissolution (as least I thought so). It kept a lot of access to Department of Interior History files off line...to include the Homestead Act/Farm purchase site. I did check this database to see if there was a Dettman land purchase, but did not find one.

Don,
That is the right Nellie, It would seem that her husband didn't have a stone. The other Thomas D. would have been the son of Thomas and his first wife. I have a lot of information on him from one of his descendants from out there but nothing on Nellie and Thomas family. Thank you for the search . I apprecieate it much.
Terrie

Charles,
Thanks for the lookup. That Thomas D. may have been the son of thomas and his first wife. I don't believe that the older Thomas had a stone. He died at home in Ione. He died in 1944. I do have that much. I am looking for information on their children. I was in contact with a daughter Grace Weaver who moved to Republic and I believe she died there in 1998.
Thanks for the lookup . I appreciate it much.
Terrie

Hi Deb, whatever info you learn from relatives you want to back up with documentation. We did not do that in our family and had a 30-year old mistake which didn't come to light until I tried to assemble documentation to join the Mayflower Society.

Anyway, I think her maiden name would be on her death cert but don't have any here to verify that. You could contact State of WA, Dept of Health.

However, it will be on her childrens' birth certs. Gertie, abt. 1892 and Carsie abt. 1890 were born probably born in Douglas Co. and Fred born abt. 1904 in Douglas or Yakima Counties. The state didn't require birth certs until July, 1907 but I'd contact them first anyway. Center for Health Stats, Information 360-236-4300 or 360-236-4313.

If they don't have them, I'd Google Douglas County County Auditor.

There are two rolls of microfilm of Douglas County Birth Returns 1891-1907 at Washington Archives, www.cwu/edu/~archives/douglas.htm. I think you might need a volunteer to access them. To find a volunteer look at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, www.raogk.org. Be sure to tell them to look through both microfilms. Good Luck!

Hi Tracy, I don't know about the Kalispel Indian Reservation but do a Google on Kalispel Indians of Montana. That brought up several web sites.

I did find a Maybelle J. Lynch, 535-34-2700, last residence (or might be where last benefit check was mailed) was St. John, Whitman Co., WA. She died 17 May 1988. Her social security number was assigned in WA in 1954. Source: Social Security Death Index.

Maybelle Lynch died 17 May 1988, Colfax, Whitman Co. She was born abt. 1913 & lived in Whitman Co. Source: WA Death Index.

A Maybelle Lynch appears on the 1930 Ewan, Whitman Co., WA Census with her husband Beryl M. Lynch. She was born abt. 1913, WA. Beryl was born abt. 1911, WA and was a general farm laborer. They had been married one year. Beryl's brother Darel D. Lynch, single, b. abt. 1913, WA was living with them.

I tried to find her in the 1920 Census but didn't even when I searched under Bailey and Randall and Dettman. However, I didn't look through each page. Good Luck!

Hi Deb, if you're looking for Minnie's maiden name, I'd post on the Illinois Unknown County Message Board. They were married about 1884-1885 (from Census calculations). Herman was b. in IL and also their first child Frank. Her maiden name would be on their marriage license. Successful Hunting!

Looking for any connection anyone has to the Monk family of this region. Their children's surnames are Simpson living in Rathdrum, Id in 1940, Jacobs of Priest River, ID and Matthews of Bole, Montana all in 1940. Herman and Minnie were in Waterville, Douglas Co. Wa in 1900. We suspect her maiden name may have Thormahlen

Thank you. Would you believe it but we did eventually find her last May. We used the Random Acts of Genealogy Kindness website and then I had to go to Woodford County to get her marriage license in Illinois - that county is not online yet. We sent a letter to anyone with that surname in Wash, etc. We got a reply back and lo and behold it was her grandchildren. One of her great grandsons came from Wa and visited us in July for a morning and then we went there for 10 days in Nov. It was great seeing where she lived and meet people who knew here. I will remember your tips for further research.

Check out threir website at www.kalispeltribe.com. The site has a place to leave messages and their regular mailing address. I would recommend you send your message 'attention Probate.' Also, make it very clear that you are looking for family information, but not fishing for enrollment. Their tribal government is fairly small, it may take some time for some one to get back to you.
The Indians who live by Lake Kalispel in Montana are the BLACKFEET.......

Newport Miner newspaper would have obits. Contact
Pend Oreille County Historical Society
Post Office Box 1409
Newport,Washington99156
They publish a yearly magazine called Big Smoke cost about
$12 including shipping and handling.
You would be particularly interested in 1980 which contains
the life of Adam Wike who was born in Lawrence,Nebraska-
December 8,1880 also about brother Lou who together
operated a grocery store in Cusick as early as 1906 was
written by his wife Mildred Hansen Wike with the help of
her daughter Joyce Wike Holder. Also you may want the
1996 copy as it contains a picture of the Wike Store.
Thanks for the response. Yes, I am aware of the Easleys in the Chewelah area in the 60s. I lived there in the 40s. These Easleys are from my Grandfather's ((Lonnie Easley) second marriage. I am seeking information on from the time of his first marriage to my grandmother Ida May Mowerson, through the birth of my mother Ella May Easley and her sister Ida Marie Easley a number of years prior to his marriage to his second wife. None of the Easley survivors even knew my grandmother. I was hoping someone might have access to old directories, newspapers, etc. Thanks again.

I am searching for any record of my mother and her family for the time period above. Names would include Lonnie Easley, Ida Marie Easley, Ida Mae Easley, Ella May Easley. I know my mother, Ella, was born in 1919 in Metaline, but I'm trying to find information on the rest of her family, particularly her sister Ida, for whom I have no information except that she was about two years old when she died. Any information would be great appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Lori;
My Mother was born on Tiger Hill in February of 1916. Her family homesteaded on that Hill. We have visited twice in the last two years. Last year we took my Mom back for the first time since she left at 3 years old in 1919 (the year your Dad was born.) We have several old pictures of the area and my Mother has written a story or two about Tiger. If you'd like, contact me directly and I'll share. cougarmt@nwlink.com. I have been doing some census work and have done Tiger in 1920 and 1930. I'll see if I can find your folks on the Census. It was nice to hear from you. Our folks were "tough" people.
John

Louis Clement Harrison was married to Lura Gertrude Olds in 1909. Lura was my grandfather's sister. When Lura and Louis married she had two children by a previous marriage to Sherman Bailey. The children were Howard (b. 1906) and Pearl (b. 1907). Lou and Lura had two sons of their own, John Gordon (b. 1911) and Glenn Allen (b. 1931....a late change-of-life baby). I have much info on the Olds family, but don't have much more about Lou Harrison. I know from Lura's obituary that he was a painter by trade. My information says he was born about 1875 in Missouri, and died in 1940 in Seattle. You can reach me at imsooz@aol.com if you wish to correspond regarding the Olds family.

Sharon There are no Albert Bakers in the Newport Cemetery, but the 1930 WA Death Index shows several Albert Bakers, but it does not list any nephews, so I needed more to sort out which Al was yours. the 1930 Census lists Albert W. Baker age 74 at Diamond Lake with Emery Rex. There was an Albert Baker age 78 that died 5-14-1936 in Spokane County, but no Emery Rex as a survivor and the age was wrong also. All the other Albert Bakers had a different middle initial, but there is a AL. W. Baker age 77 died 3-15-1933 in SEATTLE Cert#931. Looks like the same Al. I could not find an obit in the Spokane newspapers, sorry.

Charles

John,
My father was born in the Ione Hospital and was raised in Tiger. He was born in June 1919. His father & his maternal grandparents were all loggers.

My grandparents were married in Feb 1919 in Newport, WA but lived in Tiger at the time. There names were Ray(mond) Peterson & Olive Walker Peterson. GreatGrandparents were Stephen H Walker & Jennie Smith Walker. A great uncle was born in Metaline Falls in 1917. The Petersons eventually moved to Kenmore, WA (they were there in Dec 1921 when a daughter was born & died) and then moved onto Wenatchee, WA where Olive Walker Peterson died in April 1922. I have just recently found the name of the baby & dates, so will now search for her grave site.

I am very interested in knowing more about the area of Tiger. I have a picture of my Dad in front of the Tiger Store in the 1980's and I have visited the and also had a picture taken just a few years ago.

I am asking anyone who is willing, to please keep their eyes open for a stolen item. My lane cedar chest with all of it's contents were taken IN Pend Oreille County. The thing I am looking for is a forest green creative memories album sized 12 inch by 12 inch. It is our family genealogy album that has pictures dating back to before the 1850s. The album is clearly marked PORTER on the inside. If anyone so happens to stumble across this I would be eternally greatful. I would also be willing to recoup your costs for the item, shipping and offer a nice reward. Any assistance is much appreciated.

It is possible that the McLaughlin precinct might have been in the Calispell Lake - Usk area as there was an early settler by that name in that area. There are several known county directories that included Pend Oreille. I have searched the 3 that I have access to. There is also one for 1915-1916 in the Northwest Room of the Spokane Public Library (downtown branch). I believe you can place an inquiry via their website.

Here is what I did and did not find in the 3 directories that I have. Be aware that these directories do not have a master alpha index, but are listed by community. At the end of each county is a list of taxpayers in the rural areas. If a person was not a taxpayer, they probably won’t be listed....Susan

Polk’s Directory of Stevens County, WA 1909-10 (Pend Oreille is still part of Stevens)
No Harbert listed for Metaline

Polk’s Stevens, Pend Oreille & Ferry Counties Directory 1911-1912
G. A. Harbert listed in Metaline

Polk’s Stevens, Pend Oreille & Ferry Counties Directory 1913-1914
Al Harbert, laborer, Inland Portland Cement Co, Metaline Falls
No Morton listed for Metaline Falls
Only Morton listed in the county appears to be H.B. Morton, Blueslide

In the 1910 census, Granville A. Harbert is in the Metaline precinct.
Brian....I checked the "Polk's Directory of Stevens County for 1909/1910" (P.O. was still part of Stevens at that time) and found only one Newsom listed in Newport...Jeremiah O. Newsom, constable Newport, Ida, resided Newport Hotel. Could this be your Jerry? There are no Newsoms listed in Newport in the "Polk's Stevens, Pend Oreille and Ferry County Directory of 1913/1914." I do not see any Newsom listed in the 1910 census index for Newport. This might indicate that he left the area about 1910, or he could be listed somewhere else in the county. We are working on making a consolidated index for the 1910 census, but only have it a little over half done. Hopefully this project will be done soon. Have you contacted the P.O. County Historical Society? They may be able to help futher....Susan

Sharon....The state began keeping death records in 1907. If you contact the Northeast Washington Genealogical Society at research@newgs.org, their researcher could look in the Washington State Death Index (a copy of which is at the Colville Public Library) and get a death date for you if he did indeed die in the state of Washignton. Be sure to give her his full name and the approximate time period you think he died. If he died after 1940, this index is online through the Ancestry.com subscription database. Hope this helps....Susan

Thanks for responding Phyliss. Heres my story. My grandparents were living in Cocalilla, Id. till we believe his (William E. Morton) death in late 1913. We know our grandmother moved to Pend O Reille Co. probably in early 1914. Her name was Grace Adel Morton. She is shown in the 1920 census with all 9 children in "McLaughlin" precinct. I have no idea where that is. They spent most of their time in Ione althouth also lived in Metaline Falls, Usk and Cusick. She remarried to a Glanville "Al" Harbert between 1920 and 1930 as they are both in the 1930 census in Ione with her youngest child still at home. You might try the county directories (unknown if at library or courthouse) to see if she is listed in 1914 and subsequent years. I dont think you will find any mention of William E. Morton as I am certain he died in Bonner County. Appreciate any help yu can give in finding the earliest date for Grace and if possible the marriage date of her and Al Harbert. Thanks.

I have an obituary for Elon HARPER, which states that he is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Is that in Pend Oreille County or a near by county? Does anyone have a book on county cemeteries that have Elon in it? If so, does it list a Noah HARPER, Gene HARPER or Eugene HARPER?

Thursday, January 26, 1922, Front Page, Name of newspaper unknown, (but from a Pend Oreille County (WA) newspaper) -

At the Newport hospital on Friday, Jan. 20th, occurred the death of Elon Harper, age 80 years. Mr. Harper had been ill for several weeks but prior to that time had been quite rugged.

Elon Harper was a native of Missouri and spent most of his life in that state, following the occupation of farming. He came to this county in 1906 to make his home with his children. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Russell and Mrs. J. T. Reddick. A son, Noah, lived at Tiger for a number of years, dying several years ago.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Davis undertaking parlor, Rev. W. B. Eakin of the Methodist church officiating. Burial in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Thank you in advance for your help!!!
Sincerely,
Jeanette

Hi, I wonder if this Harbert is one of yours? I found this in the March 7, 1918 Newport Miner newspaper some years ago.
Glen Harbert, ten year old son of G.A. Harbert of Metaline died suddenly of convulsions Friday, March 1. Burial took place Saturday at Metaline, Rev. Veazie having charge of the services.

Pretty scant, I'll admit, but in those days that's about all you could expect. Plus that was a Newport newspaper. We're at the other end of the county and Metaline Falls News/Ione Gazette didn't start until 1929.. There is no headstone on the grave, and their early records were nonexistant. I can try to get a look at some old post office records but will have to arrange the time. That museum is closing soon for the winter. In any case ZI'll see what I can find Phyllis

Metaline Falls News - 16 October 1947
COUNTY RESIDENT FOR MANY YEARS
Funeral services for Mrs. G.A. Harbert, 70, who died in Spokane last Wednesday, were held there Friday afternoon form the Hazen & Jaeger funeral parlors.
Mrs. Grace Morton Harbert was born on May 27, 1877. She was a resident of Pend Oreille county for many years, living first at Cusick and later at Metaline Falls and ione for about 20 years, moving to Spokane about three years ago.
Survivng are her husband, Granville A. harbert, at the home; six sons, Jay Morton, Addy; Howard, Bill and Charles Morton, Spokane; Lloyd Morton, Ione; George Morton, Bremerton; three daughters, Mrs.Mary Sever and Mrs Susie McKinley, Moses Lake; Mrs. Grace Napier, Wallace, Idaho; stepdaughter, Mrs. Edna McCameron, Post Falls, Idaho; 20 grandchildren and two great granchildren.
She willl be remembered by many for her acts of kindness and genteleness, as shown by the following tribute from a friend, Mrs. Sever:
A TRIBUTE TO MRS HARBERT
"I have known Mrs. harbert for about 26 or 27 years. Mrs. Harbert was a quiet person who always made one feel welcome in her home. She always could see the good in others. Several years ago I remarked to her, "You are a peacemaker,' and told her what the Bible says concerning peacemakers.
"Mrs. Harbert loved her children as only a mother can, and enjoyed doing for othrs. She found joy in attending church, and went whenever possible. She lived her Christianity. I believe in her heart and soul she was deeply religious.
"The following statements are from a letter I recieved from my son, F.M. Sever, on September 17, 1947, just after Mrs. Harbert's illness: 'She was nor demonstrative at all, but doubtless has had and maintained her convictions. She has held the devotion of all her children at no small cost.'"

I am writing a history of Bead Lake which lies 11 miles northeast of Newport. The first people to homestead at the lake were Levi and Jacob Cunningham in 1905. My family has been associated with the lake since 1925 and knew the Cunninghams well as their son, Dick, maintained a resort on the lake. I am in contact with his daughter Camie who now lives in Auburn, WA. I am sure she would love to be put in contact with other relatives. Dick's brother Levi K. moved to Montana shortly after WW I and the family lost track of him.
If I can be of help let me know.

Thanks so much Lillie,

Mary Walters is the last surviving sibling of my grandmother. She's very special to me. It's been difficult to do the research on the Doherty branch because of each one taking a nick name that sounds like a given name. Thomas went by Tim, Anthony went by Flint, John went by Jack. The name game is endless in this group.

And as you noted their history was quite colorful. I've printed out your message to keep with the growing book of notes about each of the siblings of my great grandmother, Birdie Keaster.

Thanks again!
Dawn

When I grew up in Cusick, which is North of Newport, there was a family named Edwards out of town. A person I dated for awhile, Mike McGhee, lived with them for awhile. Mr.Edwards was quite a bit older than his wife and was very quiet and I never knew much about him. They had two boys and a girl, I think. The boys were Pat and Mike. I don't remember the girls name. there was an older girl named Karen but I don't think he was her father. I think she was Mrs. Edwards daughter. I don't know how you wold find out more, but there are some names to start with. Gary Driver works for Caldwell Banker Realty and he might know something. You can find that site at http://www.cbnorth.com and the people who work there have a page.

Hi, I'm doing some archiving for the local Metaline's Library and ran across this obit. 29 November 1984, Newport Miner -

Irene Dougherty,
Graveside services for Irene Dougherty, 93, who with her late husband operated a tavern and rooming house here for so many years, were conducted Monday at the Riverside cemetery in Ione by Fr. George Morbeck.
Mrs. Dougherty, who was born August 20, 1891, at Fernie, B.C. (Canada) died November 29 at the Pend Oreille Pines nursing home. She came to Metaline Falls, in 1928 and was a member of the Royal Neighbors.
She leaves no known relatives. Her husband, Thomas E. died in 1968.

I can probably get Tom's obit if I order the microfilm if you still need it. It will take a little while to get it. By the way, everybody here called Irene "Rena". Regards, Phyllis

Brothers, Jacob and Levi Cunningham, were in Newport, WA in the 1920 census. They are sons of John and Lucinda. Our grandmother, Margaret Cunningham Hart (daughter of Alexander Conrad Cunningham), was included as an heir to Jacob in an attorney's letter from 1929. Does anyone recognize these guys?

TURNBULL, Catherine Fea

CATHERINE FEA TURNBULL (Turnbull, Fea, Stewart, Thompson, Merritt)

The Newport Miner, June 1919: At her home in this city [Newport, Washington] Monday evening occurred the death of Mrs. Catherine Turnbull. She had been in poor health for several years.

Catherine Fea was a native of Scotland. She came to this country with her parents when eleven years old and on Sept. 29th, 1859, was married to William [Grant] Turnbull at St. Louis, Missouri. To them eleven children were born, of whom one died in infancy and ten survive her. Of the children, Wm. F. has made his home with his mother, Grant also resides in Newport and Mrs. Jas. Stewart at Usk. The others are Chilton B. and Jewel of Fairfield, Montana; Mrs. Thompson of Marshfield, Oregon; Mrs. Merritt of Granite City, Ill; and three sons, Jas. J., Robt. A. and Thomas W. of Potosi, [Washington county] Missouri. A sister, Mrs. J. C. Scott resides in Newport. Mr. Turnbull died 26 years ago.

Mrs. Turnbull reached the age of 80 years. Since 1901 she resided in Newport, and was known and beloved by many of our people as "Aunt Kate." She was a good mother, one of those home-loving women whose every thought is of devotion and sacrifice for her own.

Funeral services were held at Congregational Church Thursday morning, conducted by Rev. Jas. N. Pendleton. Interment was in the I. O. O. F. cemetery beside her mother [Ann Liddle Fea] who died ten years ago.

Card of Thanks - We wish to extend our sincere Thanks to friends for their deeds of kindness and sympathy shown us during the sickness and at the death of our beloved mother and sister. - The Turnbull Family

I'm searching for information on the Shields Family. George Shields born late 1800's. Wife Sherry (maiden name Gilbert)Shields, born 01/02/1898. I (think) at the time of their marriage they live in Arizona. George & Sherry had at least one son. Michael Donald Shields, born apx. 1931. George Shields died at an early age (year unknown). Sherry remarried changing her last name to Caston. Sherry died in Seattle, WA. on 06/05/74. Michael Donald Shields would now be in his 70's. It's possible he could be living in Pend Orielle County.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Judy

Wow Phyllis!
That is wonderful and exactly what I was hoping for. If you are going to get the film with Thomas' obit also that would be a wonderful addition to the info that we have. Thomas (my great grandmother called him Tim) and Rena didn't have any children and we have no other info on them except what I've been able to find out from people who are still around that knew them. Tim was my great grandmother's brother. My great grandmother was Bridget "Birdie" Doherty Keaster in Great Falls, Montana. She was the baby of the family of nine born in 1887. I'm piecing together all the family history that I can so that the info isn't lost. I have collected photos of all the brothers and sisters and have so much stuff! This would really really help. Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
Dawn

Thanks so much! That's wonderful. I guess I should have realized that because he was nearly the last sibling to pass that there wouldn't be much information. Most information comes from those who have descendents that remember stories. They didn't have any so his obituary is short.

Makes one think about what's left when you pass, doesn't it?

Again, thanks so much!

Dawn

They had two sons I know of: Wilborn Otis, born May 20, 1895 & John (Jack) Wesley ALLEN, born Feb. 25, 1900. This family moved from their Indian Allotment land at Collinsville, Ok. about 1903 to Newport, Wa. Jack ALLEN married Miss McCORMICK at Collinsville, Ok. according to the news clipping, were to make their home at Newport. I have considerable info on the early ALLEN's at Collinsville. Would like to share with family.

I've run into a brick wall with these two. I know that Thomas was born in Streator Illinois 12/08/1881 and died in Metaline Falls, Pend Oreille Co, WA in October 1968. But other than that I can't even prove who he married or when or where she was born or died.

Does someone have access to Obituaries in Pend Oreille Co? I believe they ran a bootlegging business and possibly a pool hall there in Metaline Falls.

any help would be cause for celebration!

Questions or input please write to me:

Thanks
Dawn
California

I remember the Dougherty's. They were called Tim and Rena)Irene) My mother and Rena were very good friends and belong to the Royal Neighbor Lodge. They owned the Pend Oreille Tavern. In the early years, the story goes that they smuggled liquior from Canada and hide it in the wall between the bar and the next business. With them both dying in Pend Oreille County, you should be able to come up with death certificated that would give you her maiden name. She had a niece that came to visit her from Great Falls, MT and her name was Mary Walters. Hope this helps. Lillie Gaul

Mrs. Tom (Debra Fleetwood) -Wood of Colorado Springs, CO at email address < woodbunch4 at msn.com > asked me to correct some information here. Her father was Cedric FLEETWOOD and Arthur FLEETWOOD was her grandfather. Arthur FLEETWOOD died in Pierce County Hospital in Tacoma, Pierce co, WA on 20 Jun 1947 and she has a copy of his death certificate. Arthur FLEETWOOD had
He had 7 children [Leslie Valentine; Eustace George; Howard Hazen; Muriel; Donald Eric; Cedric Harold and Madeline Ewen FLEETWOOD. Debra says none were adopted but Howard took the surname SWANSTROM. They all looked like their father too. Madeline is the only one now living, as Muriel just died a couple of weeks ago. Carl FLEETWOOD is one of 8 offspring of Leslie Valentine FLEETWOOD. Carl is still living in Anchorage, Alaska and he has a record of all of his siblings, their spouses and their offspring.
She would have been my grandfather's half sister (Natale was first married to a Louisa who died and had 9 or ten children). I have a rough family tree on the Minasi side if you are interested.
