Looking for more information on this cemetery, in particular information on the story of Dr. Jack, the medicine man who was buried there, in a teepee. Anyone know of any good sources? I've got what's on internment.net already. Thanks!

Busse/Johnson family in Washington State

Homer Newton Johnson b. 22 Jan 1889 in/near Woodside, PA married Caroline Alvine Christine Busse b. 21 Aug 1889 in Eagle Lake, IL, daughter of Sophia Thurnau and Wilhelm Busse of Beecher, Eagle Lake, IL.
Homer supposedly ran away from home as a boy and traveled out west to Washington State. Family tradition states that Pat's Grandmother, Carrie Busse, went by train to Washington State and that is where she met her future husband. Carrie's parents, William Busse and Sophy Thurnau (also seen as Turner) were living in MN or ND at the time. We do not know where Carrie was living when she went to Washington State. The Busse's supposedly had kin in Washington State and I've heard that there were Busse families in Pacific Co.

Family given names in my Busse family: Frederick, William, Louise, Carrie, Paulina, Alvina, Hermann. This family does not seem to connect with the Busse's of Elk Grove Village in IL who came from the Kingdom of Hannover.

Giesy family of Fort Willapa

I have recently conducted a thorough search of the census records for this branch of the Giesy family. I have concluded that there were 2 brothers who were born in Basel, Switzerland in the 1790s.

The elder, Andreas Giesy, was born 17 Nov 1791. He came to America about 1816 with his wife and 2 eldest children. They settled in Allegheny County, PA, and had a total of 15 children between 1813 and 1840. I have found him and his family in the 1820-1840 Census records in Pitt or Indiana Townships.

The younger brother, Martin George Giesy, was born in Switzerland (presumably Basel) in 1794/95 where he married and had 12 children before bringing his family to America in 1847 (as reported by a few of his sons in the 1900 Census).

Before 1850 Andreas moved his family to Bethel, Shelby County, Missouri, and by 1860 they were in Pacific County, Washington where Andreas died in October of that year. Several of Andreas' children continued on to settle in Aurora, Marion County, Oregon. While Martin George and 2 of his sons, Martin (b. 1829) and Frederick (1834-1921), remained in Allegheny County, many of Martin's sons also made the migration to Pacific County, Washington and, ultimately, Aurora, Marion County, Oregon.

Those who migrated to Missouri, Washington, and Oregon were following the very charismatic Dr. William Keil. More of their history can be found at the web site for the Aurora Colony Museum (http://www.auroracolonymuseum.com/).

I am virtually certain that this Giesy branch and my own Geesey family tree are closely related. I also can trace my lineage back to Basel, Switzerland. I would be interested in contacting a male with the sur-name of Giesy from this lineage who would be interested in participating in a genetic genealogy project that I have started. We are looking for an uncle of my wife that we probably have found in Pacific county.

After a long research we think this must be a man named Iver Johnson, who married Lizzie (Elizabeth Wilson) around 1910.

Iver was born In Norway January 25 1885 and went to USA in 1906.We have traced him to Eau Claire in Wisc. But since that we did loose the treads.
We found many Iver Johnson, but Iver in Bay Centre, Pacific did fit quite well, although two of the children in his family was born before he arrived New York in 1906.

Now we have found that his wife Lizze was divorced and had two children when she married Iver. In a old family book it is said that Iver had 12 children. In the 1930 census there is 11 children mentioned, so probably one last child was born after 1930.

Iver had 16 siblings. 15 of them stayed in Norway, and we know most details about them. Also one brother, Einar, went to USA. We also managed to find him and his family.

Now Iver is the last part of the Sörholt family still missing.

In 1920, Iver is found in Bay Center, WA, married to an Elizabeth, her two children: Elmer and Vina WILSON, and their own children: Earl, Floyd, Darrel, Margarite, Clarence and Alvin. This Elizabeth Wilson is found in Bay Center in the 1910 census, divorced, with her children Elmer and Lavinia. Elizabeth is enumerated as a Chehalis Indian, and the children have a white father. She worked in the oyster beds, which was a huge industry in this coastal part of Washington State at that time. In 1930, Ivar [sic] is working as a crab fisherman. He and Elizabeth have her son Elmer living with them, and their own children: Earl V., Ferrill [sic], Margaret, Clarence, Elvin [sic], Ivan, Lester, Leroy, Ivar junior, and Harley D.

Looking for any information on Ross & Lida Doyle's family. Ross (his full name was John Victor Ross Doyle) was my G-Grandmother's brother. I have been trying to find the children or grand children of Ross and Lida.
Their children were 1. Eugene or Edward; 2. Francis C. "Frank"; 3. Walter M.; 4. Arthur L.; 5. unnamed son; 6. Ray E.; 7. Mary Elizabeth.
The family lived in Chinook, from the 1920 until ? Lida died in Long Beach in 1973. Frank died in Pacific Co. in 1984; Walter died in Long Beach in 1988. Nothing was know of Ross after 1930, he was a salmon fisherman. Lida worked in the salmon cannery. I would be grateful for any information

John was born abt 1859 in Brown, Ohio. He married Elizabeth possibly in Oregon. In the 1910 and 1920 Census, he is listed with his wife, Elizabeth, and three children Nola, Bessie, and John.

Oral, Harley, Charles S. and Lilly Millsap - Raymond, WA

After searching online for anything on siblings or parents of my grandfather, I found SS Death records for Oral and Harley Millsap, but haven't found information on Oral's wife Hazel, or their two sisters, Gertrude and Florence. Another researcher found that Charles Salvanis and Lillie Ann (Williams) Millsap passed away in Washington State. Charles S. was born in IL and Lillie was born in IN, they also lived in Hand CO. SD, as well as Moultrie CO. IL. The SS Death Record Index for the two I found is below.

If anyone has information on them or their family in or near Raymond, WA state, please get in touch.

My cousin is looking for information on his dad, Neil Wulff. Neil was born in New Jersey and Married Joyce Perkins/Lane in about 1955. She had two small children and a new born at the time of the marriage. The new born boy is my cousin. I found a Neil Wulff on the SSDI who died 1 february 1991 in Long Beach, Pacific, Washington. This sounds like it, but we need more information on him, hence the obit. If someone could look that up for me I would greatly appreciate it. My cousin may have siblings he never knew.

I bought a book at a library book sale. It is "Postmarked Washington: Pacific and Wahkiakum Counties" by Guy Reed Ramsey.
It is about establishing the postal service and each individual town in early settlers time. It deals with the first postmasters of the post offices etc and some early history.

I just received an OBIT that I had been looking for awhile and in it it lists a son ELMER WAGNER (b. 6/1895 in Kansas) as living in Ocean Park, Washington in 1961.

In the Obit he is listed as Elmer, But other research shows he may have gone by LESTER.

Edwin "Vern" Gee of South Bend

I am looking for family of Edwin "Vern" Gee who died in South Bend. I have discovered this week that his grandfather William R Gee was the half brother of my second great grandfather Thomas Moses Gee. They are the only two of their family to migrate out of Missouri. Vern spent some time in a POW camp with my father during WWII in Germany where they were roommates. They joked many times about the similarity of their names as not only did they have a common last name, their first and middle initials were the same. Unbeknownst to them they were cousins. My father is 83 and is still living and I would like to share his stories with Vern's family. He may be able to give them more information about Vern's war service. Vern died Feb 6, 1996 in South Bend. If someone could look up his obituary for me that might help me locate his family.

I am the descendant of Clyde Ray to was married to Ida Baldwin. They divorced and he married Edith De Forrest who was Clara Korevar's sister. Clyde's only child was James Ray who married my grandmother Peggy Mathews in 1947 and my father was born in 1948. I am looking for any information on James. I have knowledge of his family all around him but nothing on him or whatever happened to Ida after the divorce. I would be interested to see what happened to all the family pictures as I have never seen one of him and family artifacts when Clyde and Edith passed away. I know that Edith had two children Genevieve and R'Dell and I have no idea what happened to them. If anyone has any idea please email me. I have come to a dead end. 1910 Cenus - Clear Copy

I have found family members on the 1910 Washington (Pacific Cty) census but it was hard to read. Does anyone have a "clean" copy?

I am looking for any info re: marriage of Gina Helene Olsen born around 1876 in Norway but lived in South Bend WA.
Last record I have of her is the 1910 census which shows her living with her parents in South Bend along with her 5-year-old son, Vern Dixon. She was using the name Helen Dixon.
I do not have any other info but am assuming she had married a Dixon and also assuming she re-married as I can find no further info on her under the Dixon name.
Also any info on her son ...Vern...would be appreciated also.

South Bend cemeteries

Does anyone know if any cemeteries/burials in the South Bend, WA have been recorded and published....either in a booklet form or on-line? I am interested in finding a grave (death date) for Serine G. Olsen (or possibly Serine Smith) born in Norway on May 28, 1847 and came to Washington State about 1900 from Wisconsin. She was married to a John (Johan) Olsen. I found her on the 1920 Pacific Cty, Eklund Park ED, census and she was listed as a widow. She had one dtr., Gina Helene (born 1877 in Norway), who was possibly married to a Dixon.

She may have remarried sometime after 1920 to a Sol (Solomon Smith) but I haven't verified this info.

I am looking for any info on Serine, John Olsen or Gina.

Looking for information on descendants of an (Isaac) Edward Edberg. He was born in Mustasaari parish, Vasa, Finland in 1891, son of Isak Gabrielsson Edberg and Anna Mathilda Olsdotter Kulla. He emigrated to the United States arriving NY on 28 Jun 1912 on the Mauritania. He went first to Tower, MN.

He was registered for the WW I draft in Shoshone Co., ID in 1917.

He lived in South Bend, Washington in 1930 when a Finnish choir visited the US. He was listed as one of its sponsors.

I'm looking for help with information on my grgrandfather - Hiram Ward LUSK. What I have so far is the following:
b: 27 Jan 1883 Willapa, Pacific Co., WA
d: 25 Mar 1954 in Ajo, Pima Co., AZ
1st marriage to Hannah Catherine HANSEN abt 1911 (unknown where)
In the 1930 Census -the only one I could find on him - he is in AZ, parents born in Canada (names unknown). Family notes say he also spent time in Alaska delivering mail by dogsled either before or shortly after marrying Hannah.

I believe his parents may have been Thomas Darwin LUSK and Margaret Evangeline MITCHELL - both apparently born in Canada.

I'd love to obtain a copy of his birth announcement, census info after 1883, or whatever can be found.

She was born at Mobak (farm name?) in Norway on May 28, 1847 to Gudmund Tollefsen Skavern and Helene Oldsdatter Eggen. She came to Wisconsin in 1885 and later to Washington around 1900. She was married in Norway to Johan Olsen Stremsrud (or John Olsen) from Grue, Solør, Norway. They had a daughter named Gina who may have married someone with the last name of Dixon.

My biological grandfather was James Irving Ray only son of Clyde Irving Ray and Ida Baldwin who later divorced. He remarried to Edith DeForrest and I have no further info on Ida or James. Would like to know more. So I am looking for anyone who knew them or of them or a descendant who might have family papers or history. I have a very large history on the Ray family (done by Robert Bailey) but nothing on Ida or James after the divorce. Any info is much appreciated. Believe James may have kept in touch with a step sister named Genevieve?

IRA IRVING HYATT

Ira Irving "Ham" Hyatt age 84, late of Waldport, Lincoln County, Oregon died at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis on July 16, 1979.

Born in Porter, Washington on January 15, 1895, he had been a resident of Waldport since 1960, and a logger and timber faller for most of his life.

Before coming to Oregon, he had been a long-time resident of the Lebam-Raymond, Washington area. (Pacific County)

Mr. Hyatt was a veteran of World War I; a member of the V.F.W., Heceta Post 3156; and a member of the American Legion, Alsea Post 128, both of Waldport; and a member of the Veterans of World War I., Yaquina Barracks 192 in Newport.

Survivors include his widow, Lillian May of Waldport; a son, Donald Hyatt of Tidewater; a daughter, Dorothy Doubek of Tillamook; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services in Waldport will be held on Thursday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bateman Waldport Chapel and Raymond, Washington on Friday, July 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Mortuary.

Interment will follow in the Maple Hills Cemetery in Lebam, Washington.

The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Hyatt.

Does anyone remember the Iveson Hotel in Raymond? A ancestor of mine was the proprietor of the hotel, George W. Iveson and his wife Hettie (nee Hinton) The hotel was in operation in the in the 1920's &/or 1930s. In doing the family history (he died in '94) I have discovered that he had another child (children) out of wedlock in Pacific County. This would have been in the late 20's & early 30's. My great-grandfather, Ralph Edgar Ervin, was orphaned when he was very young. Separated from his siblings, someone in Sacramento pinned a note on him and sent him to WA State to be raised by family friends. He wound up in Raymond. He would have come to Raymond about 1894. No one in my family can remember the name of the people who raised him. About 1920 they moved to Tacoma, that's about all I know. Does anyone know who these people were? Or who might know? Mrs. Swanson Dies at 89
Mrs. Selma C. Swanson, 89, a pioneer Raymond resident, died Saturday in Willapa Harbor Convelescent center. She was born in Finland and has lived here for more than 60 years. She was a member of the Lutheran church. Her husband, Alfred Swanson, died April 19, 1962. Surviving are two sons, Ernest C. Swanson of Raymond, and Verne A. Swanson of Bremerton, four grandchildren and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Murphy Mortuary chapel with the Rev. C.A. Olson, former Lutheran pastor, officiating. Burial was beside her husband in Washington cemetery.

Death claimed Mrs. Hilda Franks 75, at her Seeley street home early Monday morning.
The widow of the late William Franks, who died in 1949, Mrs. Franks was born in Finland on February 6, 1877, and came to Raymond 39 years ago.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur Franks, and Wilfred Franks, both of Raymond; two daughters, Mrs. Ann Parker, East Raymond, and Mrs. Ellen McKnight, Raymond; two sisters, Mrs. Matt Mattson and Mrs. Alfred Swanson, both of this city; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Family Funeral chapel, with the Rev. B. H. Clark, Baptist minister, officiating. The rites will be concluded in Fern Hill cemetery.

Wesley E. Hughitt, 83, of Waldport died of complications from pneumonia in Newport (Lincoln Co., OR) on October 21, 2001.

He was born in South Bend, (Pacific Co.) Washington, on June 15, 1918.

He married Virginia Hendershott in Couer de Alene, Idaho on Sept. 28, 1939.

He served as a Navy Radarman on the USS Cottle from 1943-44.

He was employed with the Seattle Portland and Spokane Railroad in Wishram, Washington for 42 years before retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Dalles Elks Lodge. He enjoyed oil painting and photography.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hughitt of Waldport (Lincoln Co.) a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Michael Orr of Tigard; brothers Herbert Hughitt of Toledo and Willard Hughitt of Redmond; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

At the decedent's request, no services will be held.

Three sisters were born in Swedish speaking Nykarleby, Finland. At least two of them lived in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan before migrating to Raymond, WA before 1920. Selma (nee Fredrickson) and Alfred Swanson, Her sister (possibly Hilma) married into the Franks family. Another sister married into the Mattson family. The daughters of these sisters married into the Parker, Keeton and Steudler families. Any help you can provide to help me learn more about these families would be appreciated.

Looking for a picture of the MS EFFIN, EFIN or ELFIN that carried freight from Portland to Ilwaco and waypoints from about 1914 to 1937. She burned to the waterline May 11, 1937 near Ilwaco (see Oregonian, May 12, 1937, front pg). I was told that the museum at Long Beach had info on this vessel, including crew members names. I have written to the museum but have not received a response. I would hope to find a picture, but anything pertinent about the ship would be helpful. Would appreciate hearing back from someone who could visit the museum and see if info on the ship is available. I'll be glad to pay reasonable costs for this service, but contact me first. I've already contacted the Columbia Maritime Museum in Astoria. Thanks, Ken.

SHERWOOD (WASHINGTON CO., OR) Henry Morgus, 83, died Friday.

He was born in South Bend,(PACIFIC CO.) Wash., and graduated from high school there. He married Grace in 1936 and they moved to Portland. He was a carpenter most of his life. In 1956 they moved to the Bay Area. He retired in 1972 and moved to Woodburn in 1986. (MARION CO.) A year ago he moved to Sherwood. He enjoyed traveling, being a rock hound and motorcycle riding.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Diane Nelson of Beaverton, Betty Buck of Canby, Christine Hann of Portland; son, Greg of Helena, Mont.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery in Mount Angel. Contributions: American Heart Association or Alzheimers Association, care of Attrells Sherwood Chapel.

George Shields, born late 1800's. Wife Sherry (maiden name Gilbert)Shields, born 01/02/1898. I think at the time of their marriage they lived in Arizona. George & Sherry had at least one son, Michael Donald Shields, born apx. 1931. George died at an early age (year unknown). Sherry remarried changing her last name to Caston. Sherry died in Seattle, WA. on 06/05/74. Michael Donald Shields would now be in his early 70's. It's possible he could be residing in Pacific County.

Earl E. Crosby Suddenly Stricken

Earl E. Crosby, 71, well known Raymond resident, died suddenly Wednesday evening at his home, 630 Jackson Street, of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Crosby was born August 4, 1892 at Edenville, Michigan and has resided here for many years. He was a retired employee of the Weyerhaeuser Company.

Surviving are his widow, Anna Crosby, of the family home; a brother, L. D. Crosby of Edenville, Michigan and other relatives.

Funeral arragements are in care of the Murphy Mortuary.
