Dr. E. B. Stone DOB 1831, Oldham Co. Kentucky

I am researching information on my great, great grandfather; Dr. E.B. Stone. I have a newspaper article that states he was to be buried next to his son Charlie Stone (stating in the obituary; “to be buried here”) ((Article is from Ilwaco newspaper, Tribune?) I have a note from Ilwaco Cemetery Association that a Dr. E.B.Stone paid @2.50, but I don’t know what that was for. That was on Jan 1, 1894. This was confirmed on the ledger, page 3. I assume that was for his sons; Charlie’s grave. I know the family lived in Ilwaco Washington for a time. My Great grandfather was Dr. H.K. Stone (dentist) (Son of EB STONE). I have his business card from Ilwaco Washington.

E.B. Stone: B. March 3, 1831 in Oldham Kentucky
D. June 12th 1895, Walla, Walla Washington, stated to have been buried in Ilwaco Washington
Medical Doctor
Admitted to Oregon State Bar : 1868
1st Lieutenant, 1st Oregon Vol. Company D, fought in Indian Wars; Umqua area
Journalist
Founder: Corvallis University: (Currently Oregon State University): Under Southern Methodist, around 1861
I have no information on Wife’s name

Son: Henry (Harry) Keene Stone:
B. Jan 10, 1866 in Walla Walla Wash
D. Oct. 5, 1904 in Walla Walla Washington
Had dental Surgeon Office on Lake Street, Ilwaco, Washington, as well as a practice in Walla, Walla

Does any one have any information on these two men?
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks.
Thanks so much Laura!
The info from the 1920 census will be helpful....I didn't know Gina Helene Olsen Crawford had a dtr. THe last record I could find of her was in her father's obit of 1916 which listed her as living in Oregon and then in her mother's obit of 1922 which listed her as living in Los Angeles, CA. No mention of her son, Verne, dtr Gail or husband were mentioned in either of those obits.
I see about finding an obit for Hugh Crawford.
Thanks again...
Marge in Michigan

After putting the baby down for a nap, I had a little free time to search and here's what I found. Keep in mind that nothing is for sure until verified by other sources (of which there will be many).

If this the right Vern then he chose to take his step-father's last name.

In 1920, it would appear that Helene/Gena is living here:

1920;Census Place: Alpine, Benton, Oregon; Roll T625_1491; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 1; Image: 573.
Household Members: Name Age
Guy R Crawford 46~Head~rented house~married~OR~IN~OR~carpenter-house
Gena Crawford 43~wife~immigrated 1890~naturalized~Norway~Norway~Norway
Verne H Crawford 14~son~WA~OR~Norway~attends school
Gail H Crawford 5~daughter~OR~Or~Norway

In 1930 Guy R Crawford is in Delaware, Leavenworth, KS at the National Military Home:
1930; Census Place: Delaware, Leavenworth, Kansas; Roll 707; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 4; Image: 877.0
Crawford, Guy R age 51, WIDOWER, first marriage at age 22, OR~IN~OR, laborer, veteran of Spanish American War.

U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914
Name: Guy R Crawford
Birthyear: abt 1879
Birthplace: Oregon, United States
Enlistment Date: 12 Sep 1908
Enlistment Age: 28 10/12

Name: Guy R Crawford
Birthyear: abt 1880
Birthplace: Oregon, United States
Enlistment Date: 28 Jun 1906
Enlistment Age: 25 7/12

Name: Guy R Crawford
Birthyear: abt 1880
Birthplace: Oregon, United States
Enlistment Date: 13 Dec 1901
Enlistment Age: 21

Based on "Verne's" middle initial and exact birthdate, I found this:
Name: Hugh Crawford
SSN: 562-18-2700
Last Residence: 97206 Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, United States of America
Born: 13 Oct 1905
Died: Nov 1970
State (Year) SSN issued: California (Before 1951)

The Oregon Death Index has a listing like this (which means there is an obvious error somewhere):
Name: Crawford, Hugh Hom
County: Multnomah
Death Date: 28 Nov 1970
Certificate: 17563
Age: 05

Posting on the Multnomah Co. OR forum may lead to an obit for this Hugh, keeping in mind it may not have been his last place of residence, rather where the death benefit was sent.

This should help you narrow down your search.
Good Luck!
Laura

Hi Gunnar,
Back in 2003 you sent me some information re: Johan & Serine Olsen. I thought you might be interested in what I've found on them.
I was given a copy of a letter Serine had written in 1912 telling a little about her life in Norway and in Wisconsin USA. They lived in a town called Abbotsford in Wisconsin. They farmed about 40 acres and after their house burned they moved to town and opened a store. They moved to the town of South Bend in the State of Washington after living in Wisconsin for 15 years. I was able to find their obituaries which are below.

Willapa Harbor Pilot June 23, 1916
John Olsen, aged 65, who had been ill a long time of chronic heart disease and nephritis, passed away at the family home in Eklund Park last Monday (19 June 1916) morning about 3 o'clock. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the R. S. Henderson chapel, Revs. Larsen and Gilman Park officiating. He is survived by his widow and a daughter, Mrs. Crawford of Oregon, formerly Mrs. Helen Dixon, who was librarian here in 1910-1911. The interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Raymond (Washington) Herald, Friday, March 3, 1922
Mrs. Sol Smith (Serine Skavern Olsen), a resident of Eklund Park for the past 18 years, died at the Riverview hospital last Sunday (Feb 26, 1922) following an illness of heart trouble since last summer. She was taken seriously ill last September and for a time appeared to be on the road to recovery when she suffered a setback, being quite ill ever since.
Deceased was born in Norway on October 10, 1848, (I have a different birthdate) being 74 years of age. She was the widow of John Olson, a long time resident of Pacific County. On November 4, 1920, she was married to Judge Sol Smith of South Bend. In addition to her widower, she is survived by a daughter Mrs. Helen Crawford of Los Angeles, who had been with her since December in her illness.
The funeral was held from the South Bend Baptist church Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Joseph Weiss, pastor of that church and Rev. Percy Davies, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Interment was at the 1.O.O.F. cemetery. Albro Dickinson of this city had charge of the funeral.

According to the 1910 census for South Bend, Washington, their daughter was divorced and had a son named Vern. I can find no record of him after he was listed on that census as being 5 years old and living with his grandparents and mother Helen Dixon (Gina Helene).

Hope this is of interest to you....
Marge in Michigan

SOL SMITH (SERINE SKAVERN OLSEN), a resident of Eklund Park for the past 18 years, died at the Riverview hospital last Sunday (Feb 26, 1922) following an illness of heart trouble since last summer. She was taken seriously ill last September and for a time appeared to be on the road to recovery when she suffered a setback, being quite ill ever since.
Deceased was born in Norway on October 10, 1848, being 74 years of age.

I am assuming that John Olsen (DOD: 6/16/1916) is buried in"half of Lot 41/49 "buried Mrs. Olsen 6/30/1916"(elsewhere listed as Lot 41") as Serine was still alive.

I also assume that Serine Skavern Olsen Smith is buried "in the other half of lot 41 (or 49) is buried Helen Crawford 3/11/1922" and that Helen (Dixon) Crawford (her dtr.) is listed because the cemetery/funeral home dealt with her at Serine's death.

If anyone has any info on any of the individuals listed in these obits I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks,
Marge

Thanks for your reply. I have tried several of sources you suggested without any luck. Never had much luck with Random Acts Genealogical Kindness. What little info I have about her, ie, that she was a librarian, married name Crawford, living in Oregon, California, etc. came from a request I made to AskALibrarian@secstate.wa.gov...great service, very genealogy friendly.

I think she was a librarian in South Bend WA sometime around 1912 as I have a copy of a letter her mother, Serine, wrote on letterhead from the South Bend Library.

I am curious as to what happened to her son...nothing on him after the 1910 Pacific County Census...no listing of him in either of his G/P's obituaries.

Thanks again.....

Hi Marge,
What an illusive family! I looked in the US Censuses, FamilySearch and Washington State Digital Archives but found nothing for the family members except for the 1910 Census.

All of the documents that will be in FamilySearch and Washington State Digital Archives aren't all loaded yet so it wouldn't hurt to check them monthly.

I'd also out the USGenWeb Pacific County web site, http://wagenweb.org/pacific/ . They have a volunteer who has access to marriage applications 1890-1938 and other sources.

There is the Pacific County Historical Society who may or may not have genealogy info, http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=217403 .

I'd also look at Random Acts Genealogical Kindness, www.raogk.org, read instructions, choose Washington, choose Pacific County. They have a volunteer who has access to Marriage License Applications 189-1938 and you might find more info on Helen Olsen's marriage to Mr. Dixon.

Another volunteer does public record lookups and I'd be interested in what is on Vern Dixon's birth cert.

People who move and change their names frequently are hard to find info on. Successful Searching!

I am looking for any info on Helen Dixon Crawford or her son Vern Dixon. She lived in South Bend WA area and was the daughter of John and Serine Olsen. They are listed on the 1910 census which shows her as divorced and the mother of Vern Dixon born approx. 1905.
In her father's obit (Willapa Harbor Pilot 6/23/1916) she is listed as a survivor and living in Oregon. It also mentioned she had been librarian there (?) in 1910-1911. Her son was not listed as a survivor, only her mother and Helen.

Her mother remarried in 1920 to Solomon Smith and in her obit (Raymond Herald 3/3/1922) Helen is listed as living in California. Her son was not mentioned in that obit either.

Thanks for any help...
Marge in Michigan

It is possible the obituary was in a Centralia or Chehalis newspaper. The subscription website newspaperarchive.com doesn't have that obituary on-line but has newspapers with articles re the Kuehner's in Michigan and sw Washington. You can subscribe for a month for about $20.00.

The Washington Death Index shows an Arthur C Kuehner, death 21 Aug 1966 in Pacific County, residence in Raymond. Appears to be the father

The Social Security Death Index does show an Arthur W. Kuehner, born 13 May 1926, death on 9 January 2002. His "last residence" was shown as being in Raymond. But, the last residence is not always were the person died. It could be his final benefit (death benefit). That is sometimes sent to funeral homes for burial. So, there is that occurance where the person died elsewhere but moved to the family plot. And, the reverse is true. He may have been in Raymond, then transported to be buried with a spouse, or his children wanted him buried elsewhere where they lived.

The fact that obits are not published because there is a charge has been LONG on-going. Not something new.

The fact that there is not one published locally "could" be there was no family left to pay for it. Especially if he had died elsewhere and his body returned for burial. Or, once again, he died there and was buried elsewhere. I am NOT staying that happened in this case, but this scenario occurs.

You "could" attempt to find out to whom the final payment was made. The files are destroyed within a few years of the final claim...it's now been 5 years, so the file may have been destroyed. I would suggest exhausting other means before doing this...unless you want to try:

To Request Material From a Claim File
The fee to search for a claim file is $14 when you provide the SSN. You may be charged 10 cents a page for copies. Please note that most claim files are destroyed within a few years of the final decision on the claim, so we will not have a claim file for most people. Send requests for claim files to:

Social Security Administration
Freedom of Information Officer
6401 Security Blvd.
Baltimore, MD 21235

Here is the Pacific County Web:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wapacifi/pacific.htm
I checked the obits, but he was not shown. You could try the Query method.

As far as burial: "http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/washington/wa-pacific.htm"
T. Sheldon has transcribed most of the cemeteries in the county. Some were done before the 2002 death; but, if this person has done so much cemetery research, he might also have other genealogy data or could help you.

As far as funeral homes in the area. That is a good suggestion. But, they don't just clip obits, or save a copy of the bulletin. They have a file folder of the deceased. Who paid for burial, family members responsible for the estate costs. In a lot of cases today, the family of the departed do not write the obit and send it to the newspaper, it is done in cooperation with the funeral home. The charge for the publication is added to the funeral expenses.

I looked at ALL Oiva's in the Death Certificate index 1907-1960. Nice Swedish name, but can't find any connection to an Elsie.

I would suggest you seek an obit on the two Oiva's identified above, try the older one first, as he would be a "better" match for Elsie.

Ron Bestrom
Susan,

From the other poster (Shotgun)

> Carrie Hansen died 29 Oct 1940 in Pacific County at age 98,
> born abt. 1842. Source: WA Death Index 1940-1996.

This person is identified in the Washington Death Certificate database as Carrie HansEn, spouse name of Hans Jacob HansEn, death on 29 Oct 1940, at age 98 years, 28 days, in Raymond, Pacific County, WA. Death certificate, 2023758, image 844. From Death Certificates 1907 to 1960.
--Based on your information, your Carrie was married to Lars Hansen. Either the Death Certificate has an error, or your information has an error.

The other suggestor said:
> You can contact Social Security and get a copy of the original form he filled out for about $20.

The original application form for a Social Security Number (SSN) is the SS-5. You can order a copy of the form from a microfilm copy from the Social Security Administration for $27.00. A computer extract of the information is $16.00. If you're not aware of the process, let me know.

> Confusing comment:
> An Albert Thompson Last Residence South Bend, Pacific Co [more probably where his last benefit check was mailed to];

In the Social Security Death Index, it lists persons that have died whose deaths are reported to the Social Security Administration. The "last residence" is not necessarily were a final benefit check had gone. It could be the address where the Death Benefit was sent, today about $255.00, to a spouse or other person that paid for burial, funeral home/Attorney/etc. It also could be just from a notification of their death. It is not necessarily where they died, it "usually is; but it is NOT a exact address identifier.

-----YOUR information:
Carrie (?Hanson) (dob Oct 1842 Denmark), immigration 1895; married to Lars Hansen, but living with son-in-law John H.

Thank you for your messages. I have the information you cite. Unfortunately, I don't have Elsie's exact date of birth. I did find an Elsie Viol (Viola or Violet) Johnson who died March 1985 in Salem, Marion County, Oregon whose spouse was "Oiva." This record gives her date of birth as 6 January 1906. Whether or not this person was the same Elsie Adams Johnson I don't know. I could send for her death certificate, which I might do. I do know for certain that Elsie lived in Ilwaco, Pacific County, Washington at the time of her mother's death in 1955. I found one likely candidate to be her husband -- Oiva W. Johnson, born about 1900, son of Charles J. and Alina Johnson. This Oiva W. Johnson died 26 January 1980 in Pacific County, Washington.

Elsie's family (sisters, brother) seem to have for the most part lived in the Salem area, it makes sense that she would have moved to be nearer them after her husband died.

Again, thank you for your help.

Nancy Shire

Looking for anyone researching or related to the Wade families. Moved from Nova Scotia and settled in several cities around Pacific Co (off the top of my head... Long Beach, Nachotta, Ilwaco, and South Bend, though there are others). Would love to eventually get in touch with some long lost cousins.

Hey Ron, thanks for the info. I do have lot of info on the actual Wades, was hoping for other folks who were related to connect with. I guess I didn't realize I don't have a profile here, but I am wadergirl on Ancestry.com I haven't had any luck contacting people through there in the past, but I'll definately try again. Thank you.

Re: Frankfort
It has been so long since I've been to Frankfort that it would be impossible to give you directions. The road you turn onto is shortly before the Astoria/Megler bridge. There is only a couple of branches off this logging road. You'll have to explore. You can probably find it after you go a short distance. You know your close when you come to a mound of dirt (put there by a back hoe about 23 yrs ago) blocking the road. From there you walk a short distance. You'll spy a house first. Actually if my memory serves correctly there were only two houses standing in complete disrepair. Also if you do go up there it's a good idea to be careful. There has been in the past a few vagrants living up there. As far as a graveyard I never seen one but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Also if you do decide to try to find the place then it might be a good idea to bring a metal detector.
If you want better or specific direction then you can probably find them in the visitor info center in Chinook, Naselle or Astoria.
If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me at dianath5k@yahoo.com
Diana

I have been to Frankfort many times. It is not easy to find the place anymore as last time I was there the (logging) road had been blocked. You have to walk in a short distance. The last time I visited Frankfort there was two houses in very poor condition left along with a small footbridge that crosses a small creek. No sidewalks and not much else left. However there was a homeless man who was living up there.

Giesy family of Fort Willapa

I have recently conducted a thorough search of the census records for this branch of the Giesy family. I have concluded that there were 2 brothers who were born in Basel, Switzerland in the 1790s.

The elder, Andreas Giesy, was born 17 Nov 1791. He came to America about 1816 with his wife and 2 eldest children. They settled in Allegheny County, PA, and had a total of 15 children between 1813 and 1840. I have found him and his family in the 1820-1840 Census records in Pitt or Indiana Townships.

The younger brother, Martin George Giesy, was born in Switzerland (presumably Basel) in 1794/95 where he married and had 12 children before bringing his family to America in 1847 (as reported by a few of his sons in the 1900 Census).

Before 1850 Andreas moved his family to Bethel, Shelby County, Missouri, and by 1860 they were in Pacific County, Washington where Andreas died in October of that year. Several of Andreas' children continued on to settle in Aurora, Marion County, Oregon. While Martin George and 2 of his sons, Martin (b. 1829) and Frederick (1834-1921), remained in Allegheny County, many of Martin's sons also made the migration to Pacific County, Washington and, ultimately, Aurora, Marion County, Oregon.

Those who migrated to Missouri, Washington, and Oregon were following the very charismatic Dr. William Keil. More of their history can be found at the web site for the Aurora Colony Museum (http://www.auroracolonymuseum.com/).

I am virtually certain that this Giesy branch and my own Geesey family tree are closely related. I also can trace my lineage back to Basel, Switzerland. I would be interested in contacting a male with the sur-name of Giesy from this lineage who would be interested in participating in a genetic genealogy project that I have started. See my personal web page at: www.geesey.org or the web site for the genetic testing at: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Gysi/

Please also feel free to contact me directly. I will be happy to share the results of my research with any family members.
