A death certificate for Herbert Paul TOLIVER records he was born 3 Sep1884 in Sprague, Washington. He died in Portland, Oregon 31 Dec 1968. Each census from 1930 to 1900 support the record, Herbert was born in Washington. His father was Paul TOLIVER and his mother was Margaret Elizabeth EDMONDS. His father died in at the Soldier’s Home in Roseburg, Oregon in 1908. His mother died in Portland, Oregon in 1917.

I found the family in the 1895 Minnesota state census in Lyon County and the 1900 federal population schedule in Wright County, Minnesota. Herbert had two older siblings. I do not know their names. Various records report Herbert P. TOLIVER’s father with the occupation of baker or restaurant keeper.

I am looking for any evidence of the family’s presence in or near Lincoln County.

The 1885 census seems like a logical record to see. However I think if they were in the census I need to read it page by page because the index at Ancestry.com does not show the TOLIVER family.

Please help me with your ideas for records I may access in Lincoln County.

Also can you tell me how to read the cleanest copy of the 1885 census?
