Death Removes Pioneer Woman - The Daily Chronicle, Dec 15, 1943 - Obituary
Mrs. Josie E. Hawkins, 68, Lewis county pioneer, died Teusday in an Aberdeen hospital following an extended illness. For the past year she made her home there with her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hawkins Davidson.
Mrs. Hawkins was born February 10, 1875, at Morgan county, Tennessee, and came west to Lewis county with her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Isiah Phillips, at the age of 12. The family settled at Winlock where her father was a Baptist minister. She was married December 24, 1891, to Harry A. Hawkins at the old courthouse on Jackson Prarie, south of Chehalis, her father performing the ceremony.
Her husband, who died in 1913, built the first sawmill at Ethel and supplied the timbers and other material for bridges and road building in that district. Later he started the first sawmill at Napavine. It burned down and was rebuilt, and later was moved to Rochester.
Mrs. Hawkins was a member of the Baptist church, the Rebekah lodge at Bucoda and Royal Neighbors of America at Chehalis.
Surviving, in addition to Mrs. Davidson, are four other daughters, Mrs. S. C. Whittemore, Raymond; Mrs. Clarence Brado, Bucoda; Mrs. Lester Brown, Long Beach, Cal. and Mrs. Paul Olson, Aberdeen; five sisters, Mrs. W. G. Hawkins, Napavine; Mrs. Miles Clark, Salkum; Mrs. Henry Cooper, Tacoma; Mrs. Ed Moore, Rochester; and Mrs. Ben Esler, Detroit; two brothers, Andrew Phillips, Aberdeen, and Robert Phillips, Salkum, and 18 grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at Chehalis and burial will be at Napavine beside her husband.
