REV. JAMES A. NAIL DIES MONDAY AT NAPAVINE
Napavine June 5. -- Rev. James A. Nail, 77, pioneer Napavine minister, died at his home here Monday morning, June 3. Death followed a stroke of paralysis which occurred about 11 o'clock Sunday evening. Thirty-five years ago Reverend Nail founded the local Baptist church at Napavine. He served as its pastor the past twelve years. A few hours before his death he had delivered his usual Sunday morning sermon. Sunday afternoon he called on members of his congregation who were ill. In the evening he met with the young folks of the B. Y. P. U. He closed his day of work for his Master by attending the Sunday evening services at the Christian church to hear Rev. Frank Wood of Kelso.
Reverend Nail was highly esteemed by all who knew him. During the 43 years he resided locally he was always active in the things that were for the betterment of those about him. Especially is it expressive of his life to hear the young folks of his parish express their deep regret at his passing.
The late Reverend James A. Nail was born in Indiana January 10, 1851. He was married to Rachel Westhafer, March 13, 1872, in the same state. Mrs. Nail preceded him in death about one and one-half years. His surviving relatives are three sons, F. L. Nail of Wilmington, Calif., R. R. Nail of Tacoma and O. S. Nail of Chehalis; three daughters, Mrs. Fred Schmit and Mrs. Ida Harper of this city and Mrs. Chas. Baldwin of Knab. There are also 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. J. A. Baker of Colton, Calif.
Funeral services were held here Wednesday Afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Levi J. Smith of the Winlock Baptist church officiated. The B. Y. P. Y. choir, his co-workers, sang. Pallbearers were from among his grandsons, Raleigh, Lafe and Francis Schmit; Hartzel and Irwin Harper, and Roy Phillips. Burial was in the Napavine cemetery.
