Greetings from Europe!

My name is Timo Laine. I’m 40 years old and I come from Kuusamo, Finland. In July my mother’s relatives are coming together in Kuusamo. In the meeting I’m going to tell about my mother’s grandparents’ travel to America and the relatives that we all have in Washington.

My grand-grandparents were already migrating to America, but because of grand-grandmother’s trachoma, they had to return back home from New York. I’m personally only grateful to American authorities, as I have realized that without their decisive role I wouldn’t even exist ;-)

My grand-grandfather’s elder brother did succeed in immigrating, however. He was Joseph ANDERSON (29.11.1859 - 9.9.1947). In Finland he was known as Jooseppi MÄNNIKKÖ or LÄMSÄ. He emigrated in July 1892 together with his son and his wife Anna Liisa LAMMASLEHTO (27.11.1859 or 8.12.1859 - 27.5.1905). In America she was known as Anna, Annie or Liisa ANDERSON. Her maiden name in American documents is probably LEHTO. Joseph and Anna first went to Dalles in Wasco County, Oregon, but they soon moved to Centerville in Klickitat County, Washington. They were both buried in Centerville. Joseph was a farmer.

As far as I know, Joseph had at least seven children. Charles Edward or Kalle Edvard (29.3.1890 - 1.1.1954) was born in Finland. He died in Clatskanie, Columbia County, Oregon. Joseph and Anna had a daughter called Sophia Ultricka OLSON (31.7.1893 - 23.3.1921). She was born in Centerville and she also died there. Her husband was Oscar OLSON and they had two sons (born on 17.2.1915 and 29.12.1916) and a daughter (born on 31.5.1919).

Joseph and Anna also had Peter Sofia Sr (born around 1895), Olga (born around 1897), Ina (born around 1900) and Oscar (born around 1901). Anna died in 1905 and two years later Joseph married Susan or Susanna LEINONEN (6.2.1852 - 6.4.1936). She was born in Finland and she died in Centerville.

This is basically all I know. It would be great to find relatives among present inhabitants of Klickitat County. If anyone over there knows anything about the persons I mentioned above or their descendants, I would be grateful. Even if you don’t know them, any information concerning Centerville Finns would be extremely interesting. No matter how insignificant it would be. We, the descendants of those who remained, don’t know anything about the life of those who left.

Best wishes,
Timo Laine
