WOW.

I had some of this information and have been in contact with Kelly Petit, in fact, I used some of her research and located a distant cousin (down the Kelmer line) and have been in contact with her ever since.

This is a great addition to the information I do have. As you suggested I will be contacting my local library in person to see what I can find. I did not know you could ask librarians to search as well, that is some really great info.

I will sift through this and check it all out. I appreciate your time and assistance. If there is anything over here in Olympia I can help you look up, let me know.

Once again, thank you

Based on your information. I'm "guessing" Almeda Hill may have married sometime between 1934 and 1940. Her children would have been born late 1930's to early 1940's. So they would have had children sometime in mid to late 1950's to 1960's.
--The FIRST place to go would be to any of the living children, either call or visit them. Pick their brains for information about their mother and father. ALSO their grandparents. . For this search, you don't need their exact DOB's, but the PLACE of birth would help, i.e. in Washington (probably?). If any had died, obtain their obituaries.
--For your Grandfather James J. Hill and Almeda, obtain their obituaries. Also see other information to seek below.

Now, found info. You may have some or all:

The below census from an image is found on Ancestry.com. If you don't subscribe to it, your local library might have it for research using your library card AT the library. I could send the image to you. It is not accessible from home. The 1940 Census will be released in 2012.
The 1930 Census for Seattle, King County, WA
John I Hill, age 47, born in Norway to both parents born in Norway, immigrated in 1902, naturalized, a building contractor. Owns his home at 2158 N. 51st Street, value $6500. A widower, first married at age 27
Kelar (as written, Kelmar/Kelmer), age 18, boat mechanic.
Almeda, age 13
Margarette, age 8
--all children born in Washington to both parents born in Norway.

The 1920 Census for Seattle, King County, renting at 3731 Sunnyside
John Hill, age 36, born in Norway, immigrated 1903, "Al (alien) (so had not yet been naturalized). House Carpenter.
Sina, age 35, immigrated 1903
Kelmer, age 8
Almeda, age 3 3/12. Census enumerated on 8-9 January, 1920, so Almeda born about September/October 1916. (Your facts proved the date)

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image Database:
John Hill, born Feb 10, 1883 in Norway, living at 3731 Sunnyside Avenue, Seattle. He was an alien. A Carpenter, nearest relative Lina Hill, same address. He was tall in height, medium in build, blue eyes and brown hair. He had no physical handicaps. He registered on Sept. 12, 1918.

Washington Death Certificate Index:
Sina Hill, died 27 August 1927 in Seattle, age 43 years 3 months 15 days, married to John Hill, father Austin Twite, mother Case Hansen. The names of the parents are only as good as the respondent's knowledge, and the spelling of the person writing the data.
--Get her obituary:
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks.
--I find a John Hill, death 24 June 1945 in King County, age 62. The Washington Death Certificate Index shows this person to have died in Kirkland, age 62 years 9 months and 21 days, his father was Mike Haittala, mother Amelia. The age comes back to Sept 3, 1883. This person, while close is NOT the correct person. http://www.genealogia.fi/emi/emi3d20r15e.htm

I find two family trees having Almeda:
1. From Kelly Robberstad Petit kelly.petit@wanadoo.fr (last update was in May 2002, so the email address might be old. The "fr" at the end is for France.
http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kelly...
2. Same person, email address of 2003 Kellypetit@a2points.com
http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2394...
--has her death on April 1976 in San Jose, Santa Clara, CA.
--has mother as Hansine Mathilde Østensdtr Tveit
--I would suggest contact, there may be more known information that was online.

The California Death Index does not show an Almeda Hill death. It does show an Almeda O. Maddux, born 4 Oct 1916 in Washington, died 22 April 1976 in Santa Clara County. Her Social Security Number (SSN) was 534-01-5348. You can obtain her original application for this SSN from the Social Security Administration, or a computer printout. The exact image would show her handwriting, names of her parents, where she was living, etc.

I also found the marriage certificate of Almeda to A.V. Maddux, 11 September 1965. The marriage was in King County, the license issued in Grant County, they were residents of Grant County. In the presence of "Johannes Hill" and "Nora Hill", witnesses. A.V. (Whom you call "Art") was born July 31, 1910.

Delmer John Hill was born on 11 August 1911.

Now, as to Norway. You just happened to find someone that has done a LOT of Norwegian genealogy research.

The name "John Hill" is "probably" an Americanized/Angelicanized name other than what he had in Norway. When born in 1883, Patronymics, the naming system, was still widespread. He could have been John, Johan, Johannes. Hill could be a far shortened form of the farm name on which he was born. (Patronymics has names that are "Given", "Patronymic name which is the first name of the father, followed by "Sen"; and then the farm/gard name. So, if Magnus Eriksen Slettbaken had a son Johan, he would be Johan Magnusen Slettbaken...until he moved. If he moved to Sletbraaten, he would become Johan Magnusen Sletbraaten. A woman keeps her birth name, Inga Magnusdtr would be so named all of her life, plus the farm name.

You mentioned the Digitalarkivet. It does have the emigranter, for emigrant records from various ports. Finding Sina would be somewhat simple, also on the 1900 census, or the church records. But, John? His emigrant records would be difficult because of the unknown name factor. Searching for a name beginning with "Joh", year of birth "1883" might find possibilities for the years 1902/1903.
--For "Joh", born "1883", for Oslo, five names, none appear correct.
--For "Joh", born "1883", Bergen, year beginning "190", there are 160. One, a Gunvald Johan Pedersen Hille, born 1883, emigrating Jan 23, 1902, home was in Finnaas.

Here is Hansine's emigration, Sept 11, 1902:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
It "appears" they might have been on the Eldorado, however, it is a Wilson Line, versus Allan Line vessel. http://www.norwayheritage.com/
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_route.asp?ro=B02
All of the 1902 voyages from Bergen sailed to England, "Transmigration", usually to Hull. From Hull, they would take a train, carriage to a port such as Liverpool. A large percentage of Norwegians sailed through Quebec, Canada, versus than an eastern US port. They were more direct to mid-west.
I did find their passenger manifest, from Liverpool to Quebec on the SS Corinthian. They were enroute to their brother living in Minneapolis at 116 28th Avenue North.

See what the obits might have. Otherwise, research is also needed in Minneapolis. The Seattle City Directories (Polks) could also track the family to see about when Almeda may have married. Then, also looking for James to see when he had a spouse of Almeda. Since Almeda appears to be living in Grant County in 1955 when she married, that area would need to be checked also James. Personally, until such time as you obtain something substantial, I wouldn't spend much time in Kittitas.

Enough for today,
Ron Bestrom

That would be the correct Almeda (1930 census). Is that online somewhere?

My Grandfather is James J Hill (unk dob or pob) he married Almeda Hill, born 4 Oct 1916 in King County Washington, unk date of Marriage.
She had four children
Jerry R Hill (unk dob)
John Hill (unk dob)
James J Hill jr (unk dob goes by Jay)
Charlene Hill (unk dob)

Almeda's father is John Hill, born about 1884, who immigrated from Norway in 1901 and married Hansine Tveit, who immigrated from Norway in 1902-03. Hansine immigrated with her sister Monsine Tveit. I have located that information in the digitalvark (sp).

I have located the 1920 Census from King County that lists, John, Hansine, Almeda and Kelmer (brother of Almeda)
I have also located Almeda's marriage (second marriage) certificate to Art Maddux. On the certificate are two witnesses of Johannes and Nora Hill (unk relation unk which Hill family). It gets confusing when she was a Hill and married another Hill.

I am trying to locate anything about James J Hill (husband of Almeda) and John Hill (father of Almeda) so I can start those branches of the tree.

It appears you are relatively new to posting genealogy inquiries, at least on Rootsweb. It is SOOO very important to fully identify the person(s) you seek. Their date of birth is especially important, ESPECIALLY for common named persons. If you don't have that, identify where they were born, time-frame of when, names of parents, siblings, etc. Otherwise a volunteer researcher might ignore your posting. For James for example, was he born in 1890's, or 1940's. Also identify what you have already done, i.e. US Census, Death Indices, etc.

Here is a site that might help in writing an inquiry:
http://www.tedpack.org/goodpost.html

I do find an Almeda Hill, born about 1917, living in Seattle in the 1930 US Census, her father was John, born in Norway, immigrated 1902.

The 1910 Census shows an Almeda Hill, wife to a George Hill, she was born about 1864 in Nebraska. Living in Colfax, Whitman County.
Another, Almeda R. Hill, wife to a William living in Seattle, born about 1891 in Wisconsin.

The 1930 Census has 36 James Hill.
The Washington Death Index has 50 James Hill deaths 1940-1996.

So, post more information and we can see what we find.

Ron Bestrom

Since this is the only posting you have written, at least on Rootsweb, let me make some suggestions. (I did find you had posted on another system, CousinConnect, in which you identified their last name ended in "Ski". However, that may or may not be just family lore).

So, it "appears" you know nothing about his family or their last name. I have "assumed" this; but, I will also suggest posting if you do know the name of the family:

First, when you post, identify names. The date of birth is extremely helpful. But, in this case we are not searching for someone very far back in time. A DOB is very helpful when the person name is common, such as John Adams living in Washington State that could be found in the census. Since your father was born in the late 50's, he wouldn't be on a US Census...but his parents could be in the 1930 census.

Is your father still alive? If so, what can he tell you? Or, is all he knows he was born to a Polish family and was adopted out?

Obtain his birth certificate:
http://www.doh.wa.gov/EHSPHL/CHS/cert.htm
(If you don't know his last name, you probably would have to obtain the certificate for his adopted name. Under Washington State Law, adoption records are sealed, even from him. There is a process to obtain the information; but very difficult).

What do you know about his family? Did he have any siblings that are still alive? If he had five siblings, at least one of them should still be alive.

You should also have posted on the Kittitas County board, as Ellensburg is in that county. This message may in fact be moved there.

A researcher in the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness could do a lookup in the City Directories. The City Directories (Polks) is an annual publication of the names of people living in a populated area. It shows their names in alphabetical order, followed by "(spouse name)", followed by type of employment, sometimes the place of employment, followed by address. If others in the same family are employed, they would be listed separately. These books are available in libraries across the state (Seattle downtown library has them), but a local researcher could also find them in Ellensburg. It also has a business listing.
The local researcher, READ the guidelines first:
http://www.raogk.org/washingt2.htm .

Provide the full DOB of your father to the researcher. The local newspaper "might" have printed the birth.

Also, be forewarned. I don't know where you found the information you presented; but, it all might be family lore and none true. He "could" have been born in Ellensburg, but his mother might have only been sent there to give birth. She "could" have been just staying with a Polish family.

If you do indeed find the polish family, be prepared to find a wall to your search. I would suggest you use an adoption service professional to make any contacts. It is much safer for you and for them. Washington has confidential intermediary's. I have no further information on them. The law is found in the Revised Code of Washington, http://search.leg.wa.gov/pub/textsearch/ViewRoot.asp?Action=...
Thanks for the interesting information. Sounds like Margaret is a real character. I've since found out that I was barking up the wrong tree - the Duncan MacLennan I was looking for did not immigrate to the States with his wife when all the rest of the family went - they stayed on in Glasgow.

Thanks again and regards
Fions

Margaret MacLennan just turned 100 and still lives in Ellensburg. I visited with her last weekend. She was my 7th grade teacher in 1957. Neither she or her sister Mary had children. Margaret is very sharp and lives her in long term home with a care-giver. Her father ran sheep in the Kittitas Valley. He was a friend of my grandfather. I can give you Margaret's address if you email me at ron@ronerickson.com

Hi,

Go to WorldConnect.com and search for this John Olding family - there is a match which lists many descendants. Using the SSDBI, or the WA Death Index, determine where in WA. any died. Then use the "Ask-a-Librarian" service of the WA. State Library to obtain their obituary to locate more family members. I use ZabaSearch.com and the White Pages to locate people with good results.

A Genealogical/Historical Society in Kittitas County might also accept the photos(or copies) for their collection.

Otherwise, hold onto the photos and perhaps some descendant will read your note and contact you. You might post another reply listing your contact information (other than Email, which can change).

Jeff

If you have their names and dates of death:
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks.

If you are posting for a specific person or persons, always identify what you know about them; otherwise, in most cases your posting will be overlooked by researchers.

I am trying to trace information about Edwin Ear Anderson. His Mother was Emma Anderson. His Father may have been Christian Anderson. The family moved to the Ellensburg area in the mid 1880s from Wisconsin. There were several children. Carl and Marguerite were born in Ellensburg, the others in Wisconsin. Emma and her husband were both born in Norway.

WAY behind in that stuff on all lines.

I am a great grandson of Elizabeth "Lizzie" A RADER via her first marriage to George DAVIS. They had one son, George died. Her second marriage was to a THOMAS, had one son, and the Thomas died. Her third marriage was to an ENGLAND, had one son, and ENGLAND died !! Must have been hard on husbands !!.

I have DAVIS information, a little on THOMAS. and some on ENGLAND. Thus her stuff should be updated. Have been very inactive on this this summer. Know of a couple RADER's, one in Washington, and heard of one in southern California that does genealogy but have not attempted any contact as of yet.

Thanks for your time, enjoy.

compmtn

You may already have the census info, I did not, needed to look for information:
The 1910 Census for Ellensburg, Kittitas, WA
Duncan McLennan, age 35, born in Scotland, immigrated in 1903, a stockman/sheep, rents his residence, living at 714 S. 3rd St. Married 2 years.
Mary, age 30, born in Scotland, immigrated in 1908, mother of 1, living
Margaret, age 11/12. The census was enumerated on 14 May, Margaret born about May/June 1909.

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image database shows Duncan "McLennon" (as transcribed), born June 26, 1874, living at 712 East 5th St, Ellensburg. He was an "alien", working as a sheepman for himself. Wife was Mary. He was tall, medium in build, blue eyes and dark hair.

The 1920 Census for Ellensburg, renting on 912 E. 15th Street.
Duncan, 45, sheepman, immigrated now shows 1908, naturalized 1917
Mary 40, 1908, 1917.
Margaret 10
Thomas 9
Mary 6.

In 1920, Duncan McLennan obtained a US Passport for a trip to visit relatives. He was born June 26th, 1874 in Rosshire, Scotland, immigrated April 28 1908 and resided 12 years in the US in Ellensburg. The application included Mary, Margaret, Thomas and Mary. He was naturalized as a citizen at the Superior Court of Kittitas County, in Ellensburg, September 16, 1918.
--Page 2, he was 45 years of age, stood 5 foot 11 1/2 inches, blue eyes, brown hair, nose medium, face oval, had a mustache. A John B. Davidson identified he had known Duncan for ten years. He was a judge of the Superior Court in Ellensburg. A picture of Duncan and Mary were attached.

1930, living at 809 East Third, Owned his property.
Duncan, 55, stockman,
Margaret 20, Mary 16.

Based ONLY on your posting and the census data, is it "possible" that Duncan came in 1903, went back, married and returned in 1908? The Ellis Island images appear to agree.

The Washington Death Certificate Index shows:
-Thomas McLennan died 12 December 1921 in Ellensburg, Kittitas, WA, at age 11 years, 6 months and 17 days. His father as Duncan McLennan, his mother was Mary McRae.
Duncan "MacLennan" died 10 December 1947 in Ellensburg, Kittitas Co, WA at age 73 years 5 months and 14 days. He was married to Mary. His father was Alexander "Maclennon", his mother was Margaret "Maclennon" (as spelled).

Washington Birth Index shows Margaret Mc Lennan born 14 May 1909 in Kittitas Co, to Duncan McLennan and Mary MacRae.

The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness has volunteers in Kittitas County:
http://www.raogk.com/washingt2.htm Read the guidelines first.

Ron Bestrom

Source: WA Death Index 1940-1996.

Mary MacLennan died 2 Feb 1978, Ellensburg, Kittitas Co., age=98, b. abt. 1880, Residence=Ellensburg per death cert #003891. Source: WA Death Index 1940-1996.

I'd contact the Washington State Library, www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx and request a copy of their obituaries. They will search the newspaper microfilm for 60 minutes at no charge & reply with what they find.

Hopefully Mary's obituary will mention where the children were living in 1978. Then I use www.whitepages.com to find current contact info. Successful Searching!

The married in Glasgow and immigrated to Ellenburg abt 1905.

The had 3 children (Margaret in 1909 - teacher as per 1930 census, Thomas - 1911, and Mary - 1913).

Duncan was a stockman (sheep).

I did some initial searches on this when you first posted. I'm glad that Beth was able to do some research and post some good suggestions...as normal.

During these early years of the railroad, hundreds of men were killed annually (thousands), riding the cars, switching, etc. And, again thousands were killed in the construction of the system. The question is probably, for whom did he work? The railroad? Local Construction Company? etc?

I would suggest two options in research.

1. The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event. They will look up to an hour (sometimes longer) and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks.

I would ask that they search the newspaper microfilms for Kittitas County, specifically around the area of the Stampede Pass for news of a death. The more you can narrow down, it would help.

2. A Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness volunteer in Kittitas County. I've set the link for that county:
http://www.raogk.org/washingt2.htm
Ask them for information for that date and accidents. They also might want to check the local death records. The name Haskell is Soundex code "H240" if the films are so arranged. The WA Library does have microfilms of newspapers, as identified above; but a local researcher might have other sources than the newspapers. You might try the Library first, before contacting a local volunteer. But, a local volunteer is usually more knowledgeable about local resources and history than someone distant away.

Ron Bestrom

I searched through four online newspaper resources and found an article about a tunnel accident which occurred in 1887, but didn't find one in October of 1886 (doesn't mean there wasn't a death in that month, only that I didn't find a newspaper article online).

You may have found all of the following, but just in case you don't:

The records for the Northern Pacific Railway are held by the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS). I have done research at the MHS and sent for microfilm and books through interlibrary loan, and the staff if very helpful. Here is the link to the records:

http://mnhs.mnpals.net/F/?func=find-c&ccl_term=palsn%3D9...

Here is a link to various Northern Pacific Railway reports, books, and etc, and where to find the information:

http://pw2.netcom.com/~whstlpnk/stampedeindex.html
------------------------------

The above listing of articles includes the following:

Huson, Herbert S., Division Engineer, Ellensburg, W. T., to Anderson, General Adna, Engineer-in-Chief, St. Paul, Minn., April 30, 1887. List of those killed and injured at Stampede Tunnel to March 23, 1887. Oversize. 3 pp.

Minnesota Historical Society, Box 134.I.5.3B, File 384
-------------------------------------------

My great-grandfather, John A. Haskell, died in Kittitas County, Washington on 6 October 1886. It has always been believed in our family that he died during the construction of the Stampede Pass Tunnel. He was the father of several children left behind in Goldendale, Klickitat County, WA including my grandfather, George A. Haskell, born 1879.

Does anyone know of a cemetery, or a monument, or some other edifice that commemorates this event? I have, over several years, corresponded with various entities -- including the Northern Pacific Railroad -- with no success. I have a copy of his probate records, so I am certain of my dates and of the location of his death.

Nancy Shire
Sorry if I confused you there. The rest of the information is all accurate to a "T". !!! The Hans Adam RADER site does NOT have the information correct but what you gave me would be and with the proper names. I have a snail mail letter off to the Hans Adam RADER site person and will send a follow-up with the further information you just gave me. Sure is nice to know that I did finally find the right family on this line ((my gr grandmother)) on my mothers side.

Hope maybe some relatives are still alive up there. Would be nice to meet a "cousin" or two.

Thanks for the help and stay in touch. I am down in northern California if that helps you on anything.
The additional information helps, especially for trying to find such common names. There were 68 Elizabeth Rader in the 1870 Census. Knowing she was not a Davis in 1880, but a Hollister is even more help. Therewere 3,159 Elizabeth Davis in the 1880 Census, but only 19 Elizabeth Hollister. I also found several Andrew Jackson Rader.

As far as the Hans Adam RADER line, yes, I found his name using a search engine on the Internet.

I did find a person that has your Andrew Jackson Rader and his ancestry back to a Hans Adam Rader, born 1645 in Switzerland, died 1723. The line:
Johann Adam Rader, born 1667 in Switzerland
Johann Michael Tauber Rader, born 22 Apr 1714 in Germany, died Upper Hanover, Montgomery Co, PA
Peter Hillikus Rader, born 26 April 1761, died between 1815/1820 in TN
Michael Rader, born 12 June 1798 in TN, Died 25 jan 1897 in Indiana
Andrew Jackson Rader, born Nov 1829 in Wayne Co, IN, died 10 Jan 1901 in WA

Andrews children with Margaret Chance:
Mary E. Rader 1851
Elizabeth A. Rader, 1852
William Henry Rader, 1855-1933
John Pleasant Rader 1857-1933
Sara Jane Rader 1859 to 1937
George W. Rader 1862 to 1943
Margaret Emma Rader 1869 to 1926
Rose Rader 1872 to 1946.

This data and much more was identified in a family tree posted on Ancestry.Com by Lelia Sanders from Georgia. Igh_meow@hotmail.com
I sent a contact request to her to read this thread, other wise try the posted email address.
Ok, sorry for the confusion. Some of us are fairly new and not professionals, but willing to learn. The original post did give several names but----.

Andrew Jackson RADER b 1830 IN d 1901 WA. Wife was Margaret CHANCE, b 1829 IN d 1902 WA.

First dau is listed as Margaret--no other information given. This is all under the Hans Adam RADER line found on the internet. As noted in the original post, Elizabeth's obit stated she had two sisters and a brother still living in 1937 and located in Ellensburg WA--see original post. Elizabeth was b 1853 IN d 1937 CA.

I am looking for any decendents of AJ and his wife and of the brothers and sisters of Elizabeth. Would be nice to find a cousin. I am sure that she is the one listed as Margaret. Her folks came by wagon to Ca in 1864 from Iowa and then apparently removed to Wa in the late 187x's.

After her marriage to George W DAVIS in 1871, she had a son. DAVIS died in 1873. In 1876 she mar a Wm THOMAS in Hollister CA, had a son and the husband died. In 1881 she mar a Thomas ENGLAND in Hollister Ca, had a son, and Mr ENGLAND died. ((must have been hard on husbands !!)).

I believe that enough information is present from this and my first post for someone to figure it out very easily.

Thanks
