Thanks for all the helpful information. I probably need a copy of the original death CERTIFICATE, unless they can provide the information by phone. The information I found on Ancestry.com was the image of the death REGISTRY, which does not provide the place of burial. I do not know enough about Albert M Hawley to know if he was a common worker for the railroad (and may have been buried in a pauper's grave) or if the railroad may have sent his body home to his family in San Francisco. Information from his descendant is very vague, now that we are over 100 years down from the event.
Washington State has a great database at
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Unfortunately, it does not cover the 1902 time period, but I trust the state has more interest in accuracy than some vital record transcription databases available on the internet.
