The website www.zabasearch.com has public record data, it shows several "Peck", "Mullins" in Aberdeen. There is an Ida Spears in Blaine, WA. (Could this location near Bellingham have possibilities?)

Back to the album, WHERE was it "found"? A couple of years ago, I reconnected family goods found in a poster's attic with the correct family. Was there anything else found that might connect? The names you identified must be connected to photo's? At what age was the "Ida Spears", or was this a newspaper article vs photo? Any additional information on the people? Anything written on the back of photo's of people? Some photo's were also dated on the back.

Ron Bestrom

A little background on your person first:
The 1930 Census for Montesano, Grays Harbor County, Washington. Enumerated April 3rd.
Eli Sivia, age 39, divorced, born in Finland, immigrated 1912, employed in road work for the county. He was listed as an "inmate."
--The page lists 48 persons, all "inmate". The previous page was "Blank". This was the last page in the series. I did NOT go to Heritage Quest to see the next page, to determine if there were more "inmates".
--The New York passenger lists, shows a ships manifest for the Carmania, arriving March 24, 1913. Eeli Aivia, age 21, a laborer from Wilppula, Finland, enroute to Astoria, Oregon. His nearest relative or friend in Finland was a Hilma Savolainan. He was enroute to a friend W. Walkkinan. He was 5'-9", light hair, blue eyes.

Now, you say you have a record that shows of an arrest and jailed for bootlegging. For some readers that don't know this term:
The term was probably first used to describe the practice of concealing flasks of illicit liquor in boot tops when going to trade with Indians. It became widely used in the 1920s when the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and the Volstead Act of 1919 effected the prohibition of liquor manufacturing and sales. Early bootleggers smuggled foreign-made liquor into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico and from ships anchored in international waters.
Also important, especially for THIS search is the history of the 18th Amendment and prohibition:
In the history of the United States, Prohibition, also known as The Noble Experiment, is the period from 1919 to 1933, during which the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol for consumption were banned nationally as mandated in the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
--So, Prohibition was still in effect, if his case involves alcohol.

Now for this search:
I would first ask what information do you have, what exactly does it say. I ask this as it could further identify who made the arrest, what the "official" charge was made from a statute or law, a County, State or Federal Law. Any information on the actual sentence is also important. It would show the court of record, if it was a felony, gross misdeameanor. The actual events of the "crime" are also important. If he was the person actually committing an illegal importation (A boat load from Canada for example), or if he simply was caught possessing illegal alcohol.

Since he was an "inmate" in the 1930 Census on April 3rd (April 3rd was a Thursday). It "appears" the ACT had already occured. BUT, he being an "inmate" on this date means nothing. He could have been arrested on a very recent date and was still awaiting an initial appearance before a judge or awaiting trial. He could also have been arrested and was awaiting extradition to another State (such as Oregon), or to the custody of the Federal Government. Or, he could have been already tried and convicted, and was serving his sentence.

If he HAD been tried and convicted, and the case was probably not a felony with a sentence over one year. Otherwise, he would probably have been transfered to a State institution, such as Walla Walla.

For records. First, do you have the date of arrest? or Conviction? That makes locating the record easier.

First, if you do have the EXACT date of arrest, or conviction.
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an arrest. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks.
---This search would almost be impossible if you don't have any dates. As it stands now, the dates could be from April 2, 1930 to up to a year or more before.

IF the case was for a more serious crime such as actual manufacture, sale, transfer or importation of alcohol. He "probably" would have been tried in the Superior Court for the County of Grays Harbor. A Superior Court Clerk in any counties of the State of Washington are in charge of keeping all court records. In this case, although it is a 1929/1930 case, there should be an archive copy of it, probably on microfiche or microfilm. It may have been copied into this media back in the 1930's, the copies may or may not be readible. But, your contact should be here first:
http://www.co.grays-harbor.wa.us/info/clerk/index.htm
(Read this link also to confirm what I've said above about their records).
Even if he was extradicted to Oregon, or to the custody of the US Government, there should be a record "IF" he was arrested by local authorites, IN the local area.

If you do not live in Grays Harbor County, they will not do the research for you. You can ask, but if they do, there would be a research fee. Most County Court Clerks do NOT have the time, or the staff to do research. So, you would need a local volunteer. The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness do have three volunteers in Grays Harbor. They charge for copies, mailing, fee's; but they can not charge for their time. READ THE GUIDELINES FIRST:
http://www.raogk.org/washingt.htm

If they can not find a record in the Grays County Superior Court, they could "try" the local municiple court. But, they probably would NOT have a trial for bootlegging, perhaps possession of the alcohol, or even public intoxication. Since he was an inmate in Montesano, that is where the Superior Court is located.

Ron Bestrom

Thank you for the good information. I have checked the newspapers for Elma and Everett, where she was from, and didn't find anything. It's just one of those mysteries, that's got me curious! I will check the 1930 census again, I don't remember where she was then. I am not totally sure she was in the Sanitarium, as the address on her death record is not specific, and it doesn't say she was living with anyone like a relative or friend. I am wondering if she was separated from her husband at the end, but they are buried together in Oakwood Hill cemetery in Tacoma.

A search of the Washington State Archives records system for keyword "Oakhurst" shows Oakhurst Sanitarium mentioned in three record sets. Grays Harbor Government - Oakhurst Sanitarium Mechanical Drawings 1956; Mason County Government - Miscellaneous 1875-1984(list some type of record from 1939); and Secretary of State and Territory - Miscellaneous Drawings and Maps 1898-1985 (lists Oakhurst drawings or maps from 1926-1956). You can check at www.secstate.wa.gov/archives/search_results.aspx?q=Oakhurst&...= There was no mention of admission records. Perhaps she is listed in the 1930 census which should cover people in institutions (hospitals, jails, etc.) for Grays Harbor County. Any mention in her obituary? Check "Ask A Librarian" on the Washington State Library website for a copy of an obit if you know her date and place of death. Good luck. Bob Witherspoon

I would suggest contacting the state offices of Washington as I could find no other resources for records. There were only a few who lived at Oakhurst in the early years but I do believe that more lived there in later years. Although the buildings are gone it still remains a once beautiful spot not being used. It is sad.
I found Eeli Siviia on the SS Death Index which you probably have. Born 20 March 1891 and died Feb. 1968 probably in Kelso, Cowlitz Co. WA. On the Ellis Island site I find that he arrived March 24 1913 at age 21 and he was single. He came from Wilppula Finland leaving Liverpool on the Carmania.

I did find a listing for a book where his name appears in a civil suit but the entire article is not shown. He is listed on page 1113 of Pacific Reporter by West Publishing Co. 1933. This is what is written.
"Eeli Siviia was convicted of violations of the state prohibition of the state prohibition law, and at the same time by a special verdict was found to have been formerly...

It ends there. The book mentioned appears to be available at several college libraries.
You may want to contact the Timberland Library in Aberdeen, WA.

Not sure if any of this helps.
Hi Ron. You literally took my breath away. Granted, I've only been trying to track down my grandfather's lineage for a short time, but you have supplied me with more information in this one post than I've gathered in the last six months. My mother had never said anything about my grandfather actually fighting during WW1. My mother has passed and I have no other connection to this branch of the family so your information is invaluable to me. I truly appreciate your generous offer to send me an extract from book you referenced. My email is cwppwc@yahoo.com

I will never be able to adequately express my appreciation for the information that you have provided.
No Birth Certificate, but did some additional research. Don't know what you have or don't have; but probably found the correct birth date. If you have any info on his family, you might have, or this "may" identify it:

From the book: Snohomish County in the War, William H. Mason, published 1927, 448 pages.
Page 174 (could send via email, must have your email address)
Shamley, Raymond S. Everett.
Born September 23, 1893, at Westport. Son of the late Thomas and Emma Shamley. Wife, Henrietta Louisa Shamley, 3620 Colby Ave. Private Shamley entered the 166th D. B. at Camp Lewis May 24, 1918. On June 20, 1918, he was transferred to Co. E, 361st Infantry, 91st Division, and went to France with the "Wild West" Division. He was in reserve at St. Mihiel with the 91st, and went into action on September 26th in the Meuse-Argonne with the machine gun squads as a carrier and later as a gunner. On October 8th, while activing as a gunner, he was wounded and returned to the United States on November 24, 1918, just six months after his entry into Camp Lewis. Discharged at Camp Lewis July 9, 1919. 2,785,512. Private, first class. Private Shamley and Miss Henrietta Louisa Gillespie were married February 6, 1916. They have a son, Rex Gillespie Shamley, a war baby, born February 12, 1919.

Other research:
Westport was incorporated on June 26, 1914

In the 1900 Census, I find only 289 persons listed as living in Westport (It was Chehalis County at the time. It was named Grays Harbor in 1915, formed in 1854). But, there is no knowledge known or presented that Raymond would be living in Westport in 1900. Perhaps you know.
--In Chehalis Co, is found a Thomas Shamley, born Feb 1877, age 23, born in Kansas to both parents born in Ireland, he was a locomotive fireman. This person might be to young
--There were no "Ray" in Chehalis county at the time
--There were 53 "sons" of a woman named Emma in 1900 in Washington where the son was born 1 year plus/minus of 1894, in Sep.
--There were 66 "Ray*" (where * is a wildcard for any letters/words following), born in "Sep", 2 years plus/minus of 1894, living in Chehalis County.
--By 1910, Ray was a hired hand in Clallam County.

The Washington Territorial Census of 1885 for Chehalis, found on the same page. It is impossible to read on Ancestry.com, but fully readible on the below WA State Archives:
Thomas Shamley, age 35, born IL
Emma Shamley, age 26, born Wisconsin
Alice, age 11
Clyde, age 8
Thomas, age 4
Frank, age 2,
Fred, age 1 month, born WA
(If you have his obituary, it might identify any siblings, perhaps you know their names also).
--Social Security Death Index shows a Thomas Shamley, born 12/13/1880, died August 1979.

The WA Digitial Archives http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/default.aspx
shows a Thos' Shamley, marriage to a Della W. Fogle on 6 May 1914, King County; witnesses Grace L. McNamara and W.K. Hitchcock. There is NO proof this is the correct person, or the same person as above, "possibly" the Thomas born 1880.
--Under "Frontier Justice", Thomas J. Shamley filed civit suit for collection of his wages in Grays Harbor in 1884. Probably a different Thos Shamley than the one in the 1900 census due to age. But, "could" be the one found in the 1885 census with Emma. No image for this one.
--A Harold Shamley of Raymond, WA and Ann Wessner of South Bend, WA, on 8 December 1941 in Grays Harbor, in prescene of Nina B. Wolfenbargar and Lulu M. Monohon.

The Washington Death Certificate Index has
--Rex Gillespie Shamley, death 20 Sep 1919 in Port Angeles, Clallam Co, son of Raymond Seymore Shamley and Henrietta "Gallispie".
--Alice Elizabeth Shamley, 14 August 1928 in Port Angeles, age 4 years, 4 months, 26 days. Father: Ray Shambley, mother Lucile Barrett. Doesn't appear to be the correct person, but mistakes are made on DC's.

Ron Bestrom
I checked the emigranter on the digitalarkivet, it includes those ports, but I didn't see him. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...

I did not check the parish records for persons leaving the parish, also available above.

A good majority of Norwegians did use the transmigration system, Norway to Hull, then a carriage or rail to a major port such as Liverpool. I also found some that had taken passage to Denmark and sailed from there. A large percentage did sail thru Quebec versus a US port.

You deserve an explanation. Birth Certificates were not REQUIRED by the State until 1907. Certificates were not issued for most births at that time, but there could have been a notation made locally. I don't think Drivers Licenses were required until sometime in the 40's.

I found him in the World War I Draft Registration Card image database, which you may already have. It shows DOB as 9/23/1894; but I've found about half of the birth dates were off by one year.

Here is a website regarding the BC's:
http://www.doh.wa.gov/EHSPHL/CHS/cert.htm

Hej Magnar,
Since you are in Norway, I'm "assuming" you have researched the records there, the parish records, the emigranter, etc. I use the Digitalarkivet. I needed some additional information on him for research purposes. Since he was born in 1908 and arrived in Washington from Vancouver in 1923, he was 15. I needed to know if he traveled to the US or Canada with his family or others. This was needed to see with whom he lived from emigration until later in life. If he emigrated with family, 'they" might be found in the 1930 US Census.

I could not find an exact match on the information you provided for emigration; but, emigrating from Bergen 18.10.1920:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
This Birger Petersen was on "Skare", born in 1907, traveling with Peter Andreasen Skare, born 1881. Both enroute to Vancouver, BC. Is this the correct person?
I also found a Birger Petersen travel to New York, but Bustad was from Bergen, and was born in Brooklyn. This was in 1916.

The 1930 Census you identified shows Birger Mikil, 22, born Norway, immigrated in 1922 (the year of entry into the USA, he could have been in Canada until then). The census also doesn't identify who may have provided the information for the enumerator, either they, or the enumerator could have made a mistake on the name. Also, since both of the Lindseth were born Norwegians, the accent also could have caused the error. I have seen this problem on my own family.

One additional way to track his movements is lookups in a City Directory. Published yearly these "Polk" directories show persons residing in a populated area. I know Hoquiam had city directories. I know the downtown Seattle library has them. I'm assuming a library in Hoquiam also has them. It would list his name, a spouse (in parenthesis), his occupation, sometimes his employer or business name, his address. If a spouse or adult child was also employed, they would be also shown within the alphabetical order of the last name. I do not know when I will be at the Seattle library again. I do have to conduct an interview about two blocks away sometime in the next week. If time permits, I can check the Polk directories for him.

The Social Security Death Index shows his "last residence" as being in Salem, Oregon. But, that may NOT be where he actually lived or died. The SSDI sometimes recorded the Last Residence from the place of notification of his death, sometimes where a final payment (Death Payment or a dependent payment to a child). Additional research must be conducted to prove he actually lived there. The Polk directories could help. I see LindaWiley60 responded to your inquiry in Marion County and found his name on the Oregon Death Index.

I found no properties listed in Marion County on the Assessors database for Melkild. I find no Melkild listings nationally, or via a general Internet search.

As noted, you can obtain a copy of the image of his original application for his Social Security Number. It would have his name, his address at the time of application, date and place of birth. The SSN was issued in Washington State sometime before 1951. His number 534-01-4609. It would cost $27.00 for an exact image, or $16.00 for just a computer printout of the same information. AND, it tells little about the person. I would have to look at one of the copies I've ordered to see what information was on the form (SS-5). And, I'm not sure if the form changed over the years to add information.

Ron Bestrom
Thank you so much! Your detailed explanation answered a lot of questions I had and it is truly appreciated. I do have the draft card but lost the "trail" for anything before 1900. I also have a wonderful picture of him on horseback in deep snow taken between 1910 and 1915. Caption on the back in his handwriting "Picture of me delivering mail in Clallum County." Unfortunately he passed away when I was very young so I'm pretty much left with the stories my mother shared. Thanks again!!

I knew Lillian AUSTIN PILCHER and her husband --I think his name was Ralph, but my grandfather AMES called him Dutch as I recall. They lived on Moon Road near the main highway. I think the buildings are gone now and a turf farm utilizes the property. Ralph did a lot of carpentry work in later years for the Methodist Church in Oakville. I remember Lillian finished a Trip Around The World Quilt in the early 1970s from postage stamp pieces of fabric and I believe not one fabric repeated. Would love to know what happened to it.
There are contributions from them in a book GLIMPSES OF GATE

Hey Ron,
I've looked at the emigration documentation from Norway, and Birger Petersen Skare i surely another person. I have tried to find him in Norwegian emigration documents, but often Norwegians first took another ship to Great Britain, and got their ticket for America there. Or they left their home counties, going to Bergen or Stavanger or other ports which could have ships going to America.

Thank you very much for your good guidance!
Linda Wiley has examined his life in Oregon. In Oregon he had, it seems, a very quiet life, but had provided for and got a decent funeral. Linda has done a lot, but could find no more info about him there.
Birger had a brother Ingvald in Canada (Bella Cola). This brother sent regularly letters to his family in Norway. He visited Birger once I am informed. But Ingvald never married, and left no relatives, as far as his Norwegian family knows.
So it is important to find traces of Birger's life in Washington. I will look at your provided documentation and try to evaluate it.

Judy,
thank you very much for your work. I have the same information, and I am pretty sure it is all about my Birger Melkild. The death documents have different dates for his birth. That is peculiar, but in spite of that I think it is the same person. The Trundal place name in the traveling document is to be read Sundal, I think. It is clear now that when he died in Marion Oregon, he did not have any family around him, and most probably no information of family can be found in Oregon. It is therefore important for me to find what may be found about his life in Washington.

This person, who must be Birger Peterson Melkild, born 1908 at Melkild, Jordalsgrend, Øksendal, Sunndal, Møre- og Romsdal, Norway, was in 1930 (Fed census) a lodger in the house of the family Lindseth in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor, Washington. Documents show that he died in Salem, Marion, Oregon in Aug 1986, and that he moved to Oregon in 1951. But what happened to him between 1930 and 1951? Did he marry? Are there any descendants? On behalf of a niece of his in Norway I want to come into contact with his decendants. He was the 2nd cousin to my grandmother as well.
Thank you very much for every answer!

New information has been found in research for Frans Jonsson Enholm (father of Swedish immigrants Sigfried Enholm and David Enholm, who immigrated in 1924 to U.S.) Frans legally changed his name in Sweden from Jonsson to Enholm, and records indicate that Frans was born on the isle of Enholmen (formally thought to be the ranch name of a residence that he worked at).

The isle of Enholmen was an inlet where Sweden built a defense fortress (and Frans' father Elias Jonsson owned a hardware supply store at the time they started constructing the fortress.)

The story as well as lineage on Frans Jonsson Enholm, Sigfried Enholm, and David Enholm (plus photos and transcripts) are at http://mindfire.bravehost.com/enholm.html
Hi Magnar,
A Birger P. Melkild arrived in Seattle, Washington 5 July 1923, 15 years old from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Native of Norway and going to Milltown, Washington. He was a farm laborer in Norway from Trundal. His father was Peter H. Trundal, Norway. His social security number was assigned in Washington before 1951. Source: Social Security Death Index, www.ancestry.com.

You can apply to the Social Security for a copy of his original application.

A Birger Melkild b. 22 Jan 1909 died 1 Aug 1986, Marion Co., Oregon per death cert #86-13475. Source: Oregon Death Index 1903-98, www.ancestry.com.

It will be very hard to find out what he did between 1930 and 1951 because the most recent U.S. Census was the 1930 Census. However, the 1940 Census will be released in 2012.

You can request a copy of his obituary (if one was printed) from Random Acts Genealogical Kindness. Go to www.raogk.org, read instructions, choose Oregon, choose Marion Co. Successful Searching!
