Thank you Ron. I missed your reference to Daisy Gladys Peterson in the first reply. That is her. Yes usually the person completing the death certificate information may not know all the facts. I will really do appeciate your help.

As I identified above:
The above: Daisy Gladys Peterson, daughter of James Lansbury and Mary Ann Fullstone, death on 28 March 1958 in Seattle, age 66 years (1892). I don't know where "Gladys" came from, sometimes the respondent mades mistakes.

I'd suggest requesting an obit on this person

Ron Bestrom
I do not know any information on the individual that died in Ephrata. I am trying to prove that Daisy was my Daisy Lansbury. I already knew all information you provided on Daisy Lansbury. I have her marriage record to Peterson. The information you included from the Family Tree is my research. I have done extensive research on her but have been unable to determine her death. I have researched all Daisy Petersons in the State of Washington. I did email Washington State Library after I posted my query.

I appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Additional information on YOUR Daisy Peterson would have helped in ths search. Always identify a date-of-birth if you have it, parents, spouse, children, etc. is always helpful. I didn't find anything else on the Daisy as given. I did find a Daisy Lansbury born London in 1892.

The Social Security Death Index identifies:
Daisy Peterson, died August 1969, born 9 Oct 1890. Her "last residence" was in Ephrata, Grant County, Washington. The "last residence" is not always were a person actually lived. Her Social Security Number was 533-18-5394.
--Once you get her full date of death,
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx .

I did a number of searches looking for a Daisy Peterson, born in 1890, without success. This person may have married a Peterson after 1930 and before death; or came down from Canada, etc. after 1930.

My search did find a Daisy, born Lansbury, in London; but in 1892. I'll include the research; but if your KNOWN person was born in 1890, this is not her:

The 1930 Census for Sumner, Pierce County, WA
Daisy H. Peterson, age 41(circa 1888/1889), born in Kansas, married to C.S. born in Minnesota. Wrong Person

--A family tree identifies Daisy Beatrice Lansbury born March 1892 in Poplar, London, England to a James Lansbury and Mary Ann Fullstone. Her spouse was Charles William Crapo.
--This woman arrived in New York, 11 Nov 1913, enroute to her brother James in Spokane, WA
--The Washington Archives show Daisy Lansbury of Spokane, orn in London, marriage to Charles Wm Crapo of Spokane, on May 11, 1914.
--The above family tree identifies Daisy Lansbury also married a John W. Stout and had three children.
--The 1920 Census for Seattle, King County, WA
Daisy Stout, 28, born in London, immigrated 1913
John W. Stout, age 35, born in New Mexico
Robert J, 4 8/12, born in Idaho
Walter, 3 10/12, born in WA
John Wiliam, 1 6/12, WA
--The Washington Archives show James E. Lansbury and Clara Lansbury as witnesses to the marriage of Herman Peterson and Daisy B. Stout on 20 Dec 1924 in King County, WA.
--The 1930 Census for Seattle, King County
Daisy Peterson, age 37, born in England, immigrated 1913
Herman Peterson, husband, age 43, born in Illinois
Robert Crapo, age 15, step-son (to Herman). born in Idaho. Robert Crapo was born 2 March 1916 in Priest River, ID. I didn't look for the other two sons.
----The above: Daisy Gladys Peterson, daughter of James Lansbury and Mary Ann Fullstone, death on 28 March 1958 in Seattle, age 66 years (1892). I don't know where "Gladys" came from, sometimes the respondent mades mistakes.

--The Washington Death Certificate Index has:
--A Daisy Peterson, daughter of John Coffman and Rosa Carpenter, death on 19 August 1940. She was married to a "...laves Peterson"

The England and Wales Birth Index 1837-1915:
Daisy Beatrice Lansbury, born 1892 in London
Daisy Lansbury, born 1893 in Greater London.

Ron Bestrom

Although I don't have his obit(will get it on Monday), Charles died Sept 6, 1954 and is buried in the Almira Cemetery, next to his sister Hattie. Do you have any pictures of the family or even family history that I can add to the book?

They had a daughter born in 1972; thus she is my half sister.

Gerald and one brother are still living in Washington State.
I don't remember if my previous post mentioned that Cora Mickelson was my great grandmother. I am glad to know some of the family information. I do not have a whole lot on the Mickelson's ancestors or descendents. I do have Jonas and Sara Mickelson born in Sweden and came to Minnesota in 1880. They travelled with a daughter Maragret who was only a few months old at the time. She must have died somewhere along the way as she is not listed on any Census'.
I don't have any information on Hilda, Annon, Felix or Eos. I only have a little on Hilma's side. Anything you can share would be great.

Re: Where would a poor man have been buried in Neppel in 1917?

There are a number of factors unknown, which each could determine where he was buried.

You indicated he had no family in Washington State, where was his family? I didn't find him in the 1910 census, so was he born outside of the USA? If he had family outside of Washington State, is it possible "they" could have paid to have his remains returned home? You might also wish to check the local cemeteries near his family.

He died two months to soon to be found in the World War I Draft Registration for the June 17, 1917, draft day..

As noted, he was married in Washington State to Marjorie, living in "possibly" Warden, WA. Her parents were living there as noted in 1920. Her father was listed as a railroad agent in the census. He was born in Tennessee, wife Eva in Kentucky. The son, age 17 in the 1920 census, was born in Kentucky. So, Marjorie "possibly" born in Kentucky. I searched for ANY Marjorie born 1900 plus/minus 2 years in the 1920 census having the two children as noted, without success. So, I don't know if you already have knowledge of where she and the children went after his death. If so, it is "possible" either child could be alive. If not, a grandchild "might" have information on the burial place of the grandfather. Or, you may be a grandchild for that matter. I also did not find a second marriage listed for Marjorie in the Washington Archives.

Now, if Mitchel(l) and Marjorie were still together in 1917 is a question. Since she is not found in the 1920 census and there was the great influenza outbreak, had she died by 1920? Or, she could have been listed under "M. Lastname", or even using Lois. I didn't check that deeply. If they were together as a family unit and he died, her father, being a railroad agent, "might" have had him shipped back to his family...if they were in the US. He "might" have funded the burial in Washington. He was "Renting" in the 1920 census, so I then "eliminated" the potential of burial on the family farm/family cemetery. Being a railroad agent, that also indicated no family farm. BUT, a James G. Vickers did obtain land under the homestead act in 1913 in Yakima County. The 1930 Census has a James G. Vickers as a hotel guest in Raymond, Pacific County, WA.

If they were not living together and he had no family to take care of the burial, or to pay to have it returned home, it is then true, he could have been buried by the City, County, or State; and in an unmarked grave.

His death also creates wild thinking. He drowned. Was it an accidental drowning or did father-in-law hunt him down.

I, and possibly others, did check the cemetery transcriptions available online, without success. The main problems: All cemeteries are not transcribed...at all. Those that are, graves were potentially missed by the transcriber. Those that are, graves were unmarked, the stone unreadible, or missing. The name misspelled in the transcription, "Parada", etc.

Obituaries in that time period were just coming into wide popularity; but, a family member would have had to pay for one. A lot of people did not pay, especially in a small town where everyone would have known anyway. Most obituaries at that time were mostly news articles written by a reporter about the rich, famous, imfamous or victims of accident, in this case a possibility. So, the news article is probably your best bet. Again, try the Washington Library service for that date of death in the "Neppel"/Moses Lake area.

Ron Bestrom

A family tree on Ancestry.com, owned by "mbrown227":
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11236617/person/-502000935?ss...=
has this family. You can access directly above if you have an Ancestry.com subscription. If not, your local library might also have it available to you via your library card. I did sent the owner a message to read your posting and respond if possible. This person "might" be familar with them and "might" have stories.

This tree shows Frank W. Graham, son of John Duncan Graham and Phoebe Ann Story. Frank had sisters Edna and Bessie, and brother John. He was born 30 August 1877. Lived at Alder Creek, Klickitat County in 1880 (Census). Lived in Cold Springs, Nez Perce County, ID in 1900 (Census). He married Ida M. Hedrick 22 August 1905 (her second marriage). In 1910 living in Russell, Nez Perce Co, ID. His World War I Draft Registration was in Grant County, WA. He was living at Wilson Creek in the 1930 Census. Ida died 30 Nov 1950. Frank married again on 27 May 1953 to Melissa Baker in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. He died 27 August 1963 and was buried in the Peone Prarie Cemetery, Mead, Spokane County, WA.

Ron Bestrom

It was difficult to identify what "information" you were seeking. I looked at your other postings for "guidance". One other researcher suggested further outlining your request for information in the future. One more piece of learning, you appear to be doing fine with only 18 postings. But, it would save a researcher from obtaining information you already have.

Since you have them in the 1920 and 1930 US Census, I assume you also have other census information. But, will add this:
The 1930 Census was enumerated on April 21st.
The 1920 Census was enumerated on January 10.
--So, if Helen was indeed 10 years at the enumeration of the 1930 census, she was born between January 10 and April 21st in 1920. "UNLESS" she was already born and was either living with someone else in 1920, or adopted and not identified as such. A bit smaller window for her birth date, which could help eliminate other potential Helen's. You indicated her name was Helen Ann, the 1930 census is transcribed as Helen "V". However, looking at the initial, it looks more like the initial "N" written on others names.

Since you identified her as being Helen Ann, you may have more information on this person as well.

Here is the cemetery having Ruth and Vogel:
http://www.mrail.net/data/cemete/wash/grant/valleyview/valle...
It shows Ruth O. Hamilton, born 1 April 1895, died June 23, 1987. The "OES" stands for the Order of the Eastern Star, a fraternal organization for women.
--The Seattle Post Intelligencer, Friday, June 26, 1987, identified Ruth O. Hamilton, age 92, June 23, Seattle. Her obit:
--Ruth O. HAMILTON
92, of Seattle, passed away June 23. Mother of Helen A. Hamilton . 50 year member of Queen Anne Chapter O.E.S. She was born and raised in VanBuren, Mo. and as a young woman taught in the rural schools. After her marriage to Vogel Hamilton in 1917, they moved to Seattle where she has been a homemaker for the past 70 years. At her request, there will be no service. Memorials may be sent to the Children's Hospital or the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children. Arrangements, ARTHUR A. WRIGHT FUNERAL HOME (Queen Anne), 520 West Raye, 282-5500.

The Social Security Death Index shows a Helen A. Hamilton, born 13 Feb 1920, died 19 Nov 2008. The "Last Residence" was in Tacoma, WA.
--While this person fits into the correct age as identified above, and other criteria, there is no proof this is the correct person.
--I checked the online Tacoma News Tribune obituary postings, without success:
http://www.southsoundclassifieds.com/obits/listing.asp?searc...
--I checked for an obit in various other sites, looking for her name in all of Washington State, without success. This is common for an elderly person having no family member or friends to pay for the obituary. I am NOT saying there wasn't an obituary, but if it wasn't in the Tacoma Tribune, I doubt one was published.
--I searched the Pierce County (Tacoma) Recorded Documents for her name. There were five records, three in the name of Helen T (one involved her estate from 2004), Helen Ann giving Power-of-Attorney to a Donald L. Cross, and a Helen (NMI) a community property agreement with an Alan Hamilton. The POA is consistent with recorded documents being filed for an elderly person without dependents/family members, as a means to avoid probate on the estate.
--www.zabasearch.com identifies a Donald L. Cross, age and living in Puyallup, WA. Puyallup is in Pierce County. I'd suggest writing or calling this individual for more information on the Helen for whom he held the POA.
--"IF" the Helen in Tacoma is the correct person, she "could" have been buried in the same cemetery as her parents. The cemetery listing is as the date of June 2008, just months before this persons passing.

Ron Bestrom

Maybe a school librarian, or local librarian might be another source. Some school districts are very helpful, even having old photo's; but, some couldn't care less.

Good Luck.

Scott,

If you look at the image of the April 10, 1915 marriage certificate for Mitchel Barada (age 30) and Marjorie Vickers (age 15) on the digital archives website, you will note their residences as Warden, Washington, which is only about 20 miles Southeast of Moses Lake. Marjorie's parents, J. G. and Eva Vickers, signed as witnesses on the certificate and were enumerated in the 1920 US Census as residiing in Warden.

I suggest you also look for cemeteries around Warden or between Warden and Moses Lake. Mitchel may have been only a laborer, but after two years of marriage Marjorie's family probably made sure he had a "proper" burial.

Bob Witherspoon

Much thanks--I thought I would never get one step beyond holding those two "programs" in my hands. My grandfather, his brothers, cousins, etc., are listed in both. He attended to third grade. 1902-1905. My mother also attended Voorhees a short time. By my time in Hartline, it was the 3-story, now abandoned school in Hartline. (Higginbotham line is mine)

Your clues are invaluable. Again, thank you. I looked at cemetery transcriptions for Grant county, neither he nor Blanch appear to be buried here.
I sent you an email with Harold's obituary and the site showing the cemetery inscriptions for Harold and Blanche's tombstone's, but I still haven't been able to look up Blanche's obituary in our local newspaper because I haven't found a record giving anything more than her year of death (1961).

She did have an obituary listed in the Wenatchee Daily World though, that you can order for $5. Here's where her obituary is listed. http://www.wags-web.org/obits/e.html

Here's the page telling you where to order the obituary (from the Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society). http://www.wags-web.org/obits.html

Once you get the obituary, send me an email if it's not very long and doesn't give you a lot of information. My local paper will probably have a longer write up, and I can find it easily once I have a date to go on.

Best of luck.

Hi again Scott,

I didn't find a death / funeral notice in online subscription newspaper sites. I don't find a lookup volunteer on the Grant County genweb site, nor on the RAOGK site (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness).

I checked the Washington State Library Catalog for available newspapers from the time-frame and area of Mitchel's death. The best I could find is a Neppel paper:

http://cals.evergreen.edu/search~S8?/dmoses+lake/dmoses+lake...

Your local librarian should be able to send for the microfilm via interlibrary loan for use at your local library. I have done this for other states, but not Washington.

Or, you can "Ask a Librarian", a free service through the Washington State Library. You can request an obituary request and they will try to find it for you:

http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask_form.aspx

Good luck,

Beth

In the mid to late 60's I met a young lady named Trudy McAfee while she was visiting relatives in Seattle. I became close to her and over the course of several years visited her family farm about 20 miles outside of Ephrata on Sagebrush Flats Road. I came to enjoy her family and continued to visit long after we seperated. I am looking for any information about Wiley McAfee or his wife Grace or daughter Trudy. He had a son but I cannot remember his name.
Thank you in advance for any information you might supply.
My direct email address is ken-pratt@msn.com

I have some info from Census and Obits on these people. The 1910 Census also has a George Goede in the same area is he related. There are also two Charles Goede one born abt 1874 in Minnesota and another in abt 1881 in Dakota Territory. Are they relate. I am guessing the one born in 1881 is the son of Karl. To make matters worse they both seem to have married Emma's. I can send you what I have if you email me donhochstatter@msn.com

Where would a poor man have been buried in Neppel in 1917?

Hello,

I sent for a Washington death certificate, but it does not state the burial location. I'm hoping some of you can give me a likely suggestion on where to look.

The man's name was Mitchel (with one 'L') Barada. He died on April 10, 1917 and was buried on April 13. His occupation is listed as "Laborer" and the cause was accidental drowning. His wife was only 17 years old and he had no family in Washington state, so I wonder if he might have been buried at public expense. Place of death was Neppel (Moses Lake), but his "Former or usual residence" is left blank, as are place of burial and undertaker.

Any ideas on which cemetery in Neppel might have been used for indigent burials? I'm assuming there would be no headstone, but would appreciate any leads on where the records might be.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

Sincerely,

Scott Sandage
Pittsburgh, PA
