(born 1860 WIS) and wife,Carrie,children Earl,Guy,Ralph,Geneva (Married HUCKSHORN),John and Agnes who came to the Pomeroy area about 1890 from Wisconsin. Joined Benjamin's sister's family,Henrietta Smith REW and husband Richard A REW in the flour milling occupation. Believe Benjamin,Carrie,Ralph and John stayed in the area after 1930.

I know I am responding to a very old post, but in case anyone is looking for the same information...
Nancy Ann Overholser was the one and only wife of Nelson Knettle. Nelson died 10/1/1926 at Pomeroy WA, and Nancy died 3/31/1929 at Seattle, WA. Their oldest son Leroy (B 9/14/1880)was married twice: The first time to Agnes E. Kindlie, on 2/15/1905. She died 8/3/1906. They had two children; Ladd N (born 1/22/1906, died 8/21/1912) and Wilma M (born 11/2/1908). He married again 2/3/1914 to Myra C. Benson and had six more children: Myra (born 12/9/1914), Theodore (born 12/3/1915), Leroy (born 8/22/1917), Florence (born 2/28/1919), Edwin (born 3/13/1921) and Nelsa (born 7/13/1925).

Your 03 Oct 2001 post on Garfield County, Wash. message board, re Your g grandfather, Joseph Weimer. We may be connected. My g grandmother was Elizabeth Weimer. Her brother is documented to be Joseph "Wimmer", living in Pomeroy, Washington, about 1910, on Philadelphia Passenger Lists, 1800-1945.

Your posting did not have enough information to immediately seriously look for this person. If you have the date of birth, place of birth? Parents names? etc. that gives a big help to research.

The name you listed "Ella Craig (Mckay), is McKay her maiden name? If so, do you have her middle name or husbands name? If it is a maiden name, the normal method of showing her name would be the maiden name in the middle, as "Ella (McKay) Craig". Or, "Ella Craig, nee: Mckay".

I find your family tree online.

Ella McKay, born 1857 in Iowa to unidentified parents, married Samuel Craig in 1878. Two children, Claude Ernest Craig 1879-1957, and Pansy Irene Craig, 1891 to 1979.

The 1892 census, enumerated 5 April, in Garfield County, has S. Craig, age 37, born Indiana, E.E. Craig 34, born Iowa, C.E. 13, born Kansas, P.I, age 1, born Washington.
--I agree this appears to be the correct family.

Other info shows Samuel born Oct 1854 in Illinois, died 1920 in Leland, Nez Perce County, Idaho. Claude Ernest born 27 Oct 1879 in Clifton, Kansas.

The last appearance of Ella was in 1892. I attempted to find her/her family in 1900 in an effort to narrow the years to find her death. Unless you have some specific information that identifies the date of her death, we're looking at 1892 (date of the census to ?). She was 34 in the 1892 census, far to young to die of old age. In many cases, the person is found living in later census. She could have died, she could have left the family, or the family left her.

Since Samuel was a farmer, I looked in the Bureau of Land Management database of Homestead Act land patents http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
in an attempt to locate any land he may have had in Garfield County. No luck with him, but Claud Craig obtained Homestead Act land in 1910 in Nez Perce County, Idaho. If you do not know where his land was located, repost and ask and I'll locate it for you.
--Claud Craig married Emma Robbins on 10 Jun 1903 in Leland, Nez Perce County, Idaho. So, if a newspaper announcement / article can be found, it might identify if his mother was still alive.

Cemetery transcriptions are pretty rare for finding them; and finding everyone in the cemetery. Even if the cemetery was transcribed, those that walk them, miss graves; stones are unreadible or missing. And, back in the 1890's, a lot of people had their own cemeteries on their own properties, forever lost today.

I can't find Samuel, Claud, or Pansy in the 1900 census. They may have been missed for one reason or another...

I looked through my on-line sources and didn't find her. However, there are several cemeteries that aren't on-line.

I'd contact the Garfield County Genealogy Club, Pomeroy, WA 99347. That's the address as listed on www.kindredtrails.com/WA_Garfield.html.

Another contact is the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Pomeroy, 509-843-3801. There complete contact info is on the above web site. Successful Searching!

Just came across your post of several years ago about Henry Clay Thompson. Yes, both Henry and Mary are buried in the Pomeroy Cemetery in Garfield County, WA. Almedia is also buried there having died in 1926. Her mother Mary died in 1930.

I am intrigued by your Elmer Ellesworth Savage.

My Great Grandfather George W. Savage born 1839 in Ohio married Rebecca Smith born 1852 and they had a child Elmer Ellsworth Savage born 1873 in Maysville,DeKalb County, Missouri area. The coincidence of these names makes me think there is connection.

Family History:

Elizabeth Sherard born 1823 OH. married William Johnson , they had 3 children John, Lucinda,William. William died and Elizabeth then married John Robert Smith, they had 10 children, Lurana, Rebecca,Emaline,Harry, Nancy,Archibald,, Mary,Andrew, Elizabeth,Hiram"Bob".

Hiram "Bob" Sherard's daughter Cora Sherard born 1870 married William Sheffer then William Ellis. Charles Ellis and Frank Ellis were born of thus marriage. Frank was born 1900 .

You mentioned both Savage and Ellis in your message. Could this family be connected to your family ?

My father writes:

"My encyclopedia says an Elmer E. Ellsworth was the first Union officer killed in the Civil War. He had worked in Lincoln's law office in Springfield, IL, and aided in the presidential campaign. He was killed removing a rebel flag from a hotel in Alexandria, VA, and became a Northern hero. He was leading a Zouave volunteer regiment from NY."

So this is a generation before my Elmer, but it's a great story. The Zouaves were the ones who wore the gig, bright red pantaloons and red turbans that made them such easy targets...

Wow. I think our Elmer's are not the same person, but must be cousins of some degree, because the name is so unusual. My Elmer is my great grandfather:

Elmer Ellesworth Savage, b. 1886, Colombia Co., Washington, d. 1913 by his own hand in Garfield Co., Washington

His parents were James Henry Savage (b. 1835) and Maranda Williams (b. 1849) in Missouri, married and died in Washington.

Maranda (my ancestor) was James Henry's second wife, after Catherine Pittman. Catherine and James Henry had six children, Maranda and James had two sons including Elmer.

James Henry is probably the son of William Bolin Savage and Lucy Ross, both born around 1810, and is the youngest of three (Mary Mildred, b.1831, William Riley b. 1833)

I have lots of more recent Savage data and anecdotes from decendents of James Henry and William Riley who were born in the West: cousins of my father to varying degrees, with whom he corresponded in the 1960's and 70's trying to untangle the family tree.

There are other Elmer E. and E.E. Savages in census data who are not my Elmer.

I find some records in the online Washington State Digital Archives, including Elmer and Daisy's marriage certificate and the new marriage to Irwin ELLIS. The Garfield County death date for Elmer is given as 27 Dec 1913.

Elmer Ellesworth Savage, d. Pomeroy 1913

I'm seeking any information about my g-grandfather, Elmer Ellesworth Savage, 1 July 1886, Whetstone Hollow, Columbia, Washington - 29 January 1913, Pomeroy, Garfield County, Washington

He was dying of T.B. when he took his own life. My grandmother, Mary Madeline Savage, was only three months old, and I have been unable to document her birth to Daisy Mae Wick on 12 October 1912 in Pomeroy. Daisy May remarried and "Madeline" was called by her stepfather's name, Ellis, though I don't know if she was actually adopted.

When you post, it is very important to post what information you have, especially date of births, place of birth, etc. You "appear" to have US Census information, so that would help deter others from repeating what you know, or what they believe to be, when in fact it often isn't. Be specific in your postings. The possibility that a family member will read the posting is far less than a volunteer researcher trying to help.

She was the daughter of John Perkins, born 1816, died 1910 and Derissa A, born 1923. Emma married James Porter Watson 1854 to 1915 and had a child Alva Nelson Watson, 1884 to 1945.

First, obits back in that time period were not as common as today, unless a person was rich, famous, infamous or had died to a newsworthy accident or homicide. A true obit was written by a reporter. Many family members did not want to pay for an in-depth notice for many reasons, cost, the member didn't live in the area long enough, people that would have known they died-probably did, etc. There could be a funeral notice, but it wasn't much more than an advertisement for the funeral home.

White pages. com? That type of search NEVER works, especially for a name such as Perkins, over such a long period of time. A phone directory search over a few years to maybe longer is depending on the last name and place. Maybe try a phone directory found in a library for 1920???? Duh.

Hi, J. N. Perkins was John N. and his last appearance on a Census was the June 1898, Garfield Co., WA Census. He was 82 and a doctor.

His wife D. A., Dorisa, or Derrissa (depending upon the Census) last appeared on the same Census.

They died before the State required death certs. Garfield County might have something about their death, http://wei.secstate.wa.gov/WEI/Garfield/Recording/ .

The 1889 Garfield Co., WA Census shows they had a daughter Lillie, 21, b. Oregon. However, she doesn't appear on a subsequent Census and I assume she married. You could contact the County about a marriage license too.

I also checked www.whitepages.com for Perkins in Pomeroy but nothing appeared.

In 1880 the family lived in Columbia Co., Washington Territory. Their son Alvah was living with them there. He was 22 and b. in Oregon.

In 1870 the family lived in Weston, Umatilla Co., OR and they had a lot of daughters at that time. You'd have to trace who all the daughters married to find the descendants.

Seeking descentdants of Cyrus Warren

I am seeking information about the descendants of Cyrus Warren who migrated to Southeast Washington in the 1870’s.

Cyrus married Emeline/Amelia/Emily Hartung, a native of Germany in 1845.

He had a daughter, Julia Abigail, born c.1846 in Ohio. All his other children were born in Lawrence County, Missouri.

In the 1870’s his sons Jason and John Cyrus migrated to Asotin County, Washington. Daughters Ida Jane, Amanda Lois, and Elvira apparently came with them. The mother, Amelia, followed but Cyrus stayed in Missouri and is buried there.

Jason stayed in Asotin County for some time and then moved to Gridley, California.

John Cyrus is buried in Dixie, Walla Walla County, Washington.

Amelia is buried in Peola, Garfield County, Washington

Ida Jane is buried in Idaho.

Amanda is buried in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington.

Elvira is buried in Spokane, Washington

Emma is buried in Kalispell, Montana.

Any information regarding this Warren line would be greatly appreciated.

She was the daughter of Leonard N. Lanning and Pheoba Jane Andrews. (This info was compiled by an Audrey Rozanoff. Other information was found from a family tree owned by a Lowell S. Thomas, seadragon5@aol.com Since the info identifies Edna Lillian Warren, this person might be so related. I can't identify if this is a current email address, last update was Sept 2007).

--There is a Dwayne L. Warren, born 12 April 1928, died 26 January 1996. His Social Security Number, 534-20-2972 was issued in Washington. His "last residence" was Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona.
- In the Social Security Death Index, it lists persons that have died whose deaths are reported to the Social Security Administration. The "last residence" is not necessarily were a final benefit check had gone. It could be the address where the Death Benefit was sent, today about $255.00, to a spouse or other person that paid for burial, funeral home/Attorney/etc. It also could be just from a notification of their death. It is not necessarily where they died, it "usually is; but it is NOT a exact address identifier.

It seems that you have a good control and search methods. You've answered my questions very well.

I looked at the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness:
(Correctly found at: http://www.raogk.com/washingt.htm ) But there does not seem to be a volunteer in those counties.

Continue to post in the Garfield AND Columbia County message boards and mailing lists. Take a look at their respective websites for any assistance... Yes, I know, you've done this.

As far as paying for research at the "Roth House", I would say DON'T. Especially at this time. I am NOT familar with this society, but I wouldn't pay until you KNOW just who you have. There are just too many having the same names. There are just too many "reputable" companies willing to take a profit over wrong information. There are also so many GOOD and reputable volunteers that can help you. But, as I've said on many sites, you HAVE to find them here before crossing the sea. If they can't be traced in the USA, there may be a reason of one type or another.

I wish you great luck in this. Genealogy is sometimes VERY hard, but the rewards in the finds are well worth the efforts.

I looked at your website and then started reviewing census history...then found your family tree on Ancestry.com. That was more helpful than the website. I would also change your website to run from the Oldest Generation down, it was confusing. I actually had to re-write it for my own understanding.

First, the apparent question. You posted on the Garfield County Rootsweb site looking for Mathias and Edward; but all of the data found on Michael indicates that he lived in Columbia County. It does show Edward, uncle, living with Michael in 1880, but nothing is found on Mathias. Do you have data that shows Mathias coming or being in the US? Or in Garfield County, not Columbia?

I've been doing genealogy for YEARS and have some questions or comments.

Michael's age.
The 1870 census shows an M. Buckley, which may or may not be him, age 33 (1836/1837)
The 1880 has him as 42 (1837/1838)
The 1883 WA Territorial Census has him as born about 1835
The 1887 WA Terr. Census has him born about 1835
The 1889 WA Terr. Census has him born about 1836.
The 1900 US Census has him born about November 1832.
Your data on Ancestry.com shows him as born November 1831. I don't know if you have more or other information. But, I have found the birth information in the 1900 Census is often wrong. The other census show him as born later.

" She said that Michael Buckley came from Co. Kilkenny Ireland when he was around 10 years old, however Census records say that he came in 1848"
---Again, the US Census is often wrong. The enumerators made mistakes in math, the family members sometimes didn't know...Or his wife didn't know. Just be careful on the date until you can find his emigration data from Ireland.

You mentioned his obituary, you indicated "his own obituary". Do you mean that he wrote it himself ? If so, it might have more credibility than one written by someone else.

I tried to find him in the LDS Family Search site: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp Negative results as far as search with the father identified as Mathias; but, there are many Michael Buckley born in the right time period.

I don't know what searches you've tried to find him in Ireland. Most of my experience has been in tracking the emigration of Norwegians. Norway has excellent databases and are FREE. For Ireland, I've done basically none. I used a search engine to see what I could find as far as data. I see a lot of pay sites, which may or may not be worth the funds.

Ancestry.com does have some databases. I ran "Michael Buckley" in the database "Irish Immigrants: New York Port Arrival Records, 1846-1851". It found 29. A couple of them, have possibilities, unfortunately it doesn't include the image. I ran "Mathias" with negative results.

One last comment. I read your post in the Ireland, General, site. I would suggest that you limit your information to just Mathias and Edward, and to Michael. The extra information on your grandfather, on Casilia are extraneous and limits the interest.

They were living in the home of the mother of Lottie, the penmanship in the actual census image is terrible, at first look appears to be Adelleh? Denale? But, after further review it does appear to be "Dunham". Louis S is identified as "soninlaw" (spelled in one word), Lottie is "daughter". The mother was 76, a widow, born in Missouri, to father born in Virginia, mother in Kentucky.

The World War I Draft Registration Card images show Joseph Rollin Dunham, born July 27, 1874, age 44, living in Nez Perce, Idaho. He was a farmer, married to Maude m. Dunham.

I find Joseph Dunham, born 27 July 1874 was son of Joseph Rollin Dunahm and Adella Gammon. He married Maud Crumpacker on 4 Dec 1904 in Nez Perce, Idaho. They had a daughter Helen Dunham.

Adella married Joseph Rollin Dunham on 7 Sep 1873 in Keokuk, ?. She was born on 14 April 1854 in Kahoka, Missouri and died in 1946 in Pomeroy, WA. Joseph Rollin Dunham was born on 30 October 1850 in Kahoka, Missouri and died on 4 Feb 1913 in Orofino, Idaho.
They had 11 children, Lottie L Dunham was born on 20 Sep 1895. She first married a Nat Ramsey on 27 Dec 1909 in Elmore, Idaho.
People with information on Adella is a Lance Boe Lboe@msn.com (email of August 2001). He had most of the information on the family and the 11 children.

I don't know if this is your father (which I suspect). If his is true, when was he born and where? Where and when did he die? This will help us.

The cemetery listings (transcriptions) for Pomeroy are not complete, or online. So, I can't find when and where Lottie may have been buried.

Now, back to the crime scene and what clues you need to find.

For your father. If you have his date of birth, date of death, obtain his obituary. It may identify some clues. BUT, if you have his DOB/DOD, then he can "probably" be found in the Social Security Death Index. That will identify his Social Security Number (SSN). You can request a copy of the actual form that he filed (the SS-5) to obtain his SSN. That form will identify the names of his parents.

Obtain his death certificate. Someone provided information on him and his family that may be additional clues. Sometime that information is wrong, because family members did not know the correct information. But, it is a record that you should obtain. Also obtain his birth certificate. It will identify his parents names.

If you know of ANY family members to your side (same age) or above you (parents, siblings of your parents), ASK them what they know. Dig out any old family picture albums, etc.

One "law" about genealogy, you can NOT assume anything. You can not guess. Again, it's like a crime scene. If you "guess" you could send the wrong person to prison...or in this case, to your family tree. You must look at every possible source of information.

Hi, the best way that I know of to find descendants is to find the obits of people listed in the 1930 Census. After I find the obit, I use www.switchboard.com to find contact info.

I found Jason Warren and family living in 1910 in Gridley, Butte Co., CA. Jason, b. MO, 56 yrs old, marr 30 yrs, farmer home farm; Lulu E., wife, b. IL, 48, had given birth to 8 children & 5 were alive in 1910; Myrle, son, b. WA, 18; Alice P., b. WA, 17 and Harvey E., b. WA, 15.

In 1920 most of the same family is living in Gridley. Merl, head household, b. WA, 27, general farmer; Lilie, wife, b. IL, 19; Lulu E., mother, b. IL, 58, widow; and Alice M., sister, b. WA 25, single, sales lady clothing store.

A Lilly May Warren [Lilly May Bull] b. 1 Dec 1901, IL died 12 May 1989, Butte Co., CA. Mother's Maiden name-Kinnaman; Father's Surname=Bull. Source: CA Death Index 1940-1997.

I don't know how to get obits from these different counties in CA but you can post that question on the respective County Boards. Then look up the descendants on www.switchboard.com for contact info.

The funeral of Michael Buckley, an old pioneer, who died at St. Mary's Hospital early yesterday of pneumonia, will take place from St. Patrick's Catholic church. Interment will be in the Catholic cemetey. Michael Buckley was one of the oldest residents of the Walla Walla valley coming here in 1863 from the mines of California. He took up his residence at Chard Station about 20 years ago. He was aged 73 years. - W.W. Union.

Thank you for your advice and encouragement. I was wondering, about the Roth house, all the places I have posted or written to about my family in Ireland including Catholic churches have recomended them, and I am not just looking for Mathias over there, I am also looking for Michael and his brother William. I don't know if that changes your perspective on it or not, and I have alway been told "Why pay for it if you can find it yourself" Trouble is I cant seem to find it myself. :) Again thank you for your help.

Okay, I did the website quite some time ago, and forgot all about it. It is quite out dated. I am going to try and go through all your questions one by one, so you have all the right information. I am very excited to have your interest in this, I could use the help, especially on the Ireland end of things, and before 1870.
Here we go. The first question was about Michael living in Columbia County instead of Garfield, this is because Garfield was Columbia until 1881, when they named it Garfield after the president. Before it was Columbia County is was Walla Walla Territory.

I have the information on Uncle Ned, living in and around the area, but the last piece of his information, his cemetery records obit I can not find. I actually have no information other than oral history stating that Matthias and his wife ever set foot in the USA. However this oral history was actually put in a historical book in the early 1900’s that Michael came to the USA when he was 8 yrs old with his parents, lived in NY until 17, and went to school there. He then went to California via cape horn. I realize that the census has a much different date, but this JUST occurred to me could it be that, that date is the date he arrived in California? He would have been 17.

Michael’s age in the census never seems to be correct, however I am certain that the ones I have listed are actually him. His Gravestone says 1831, so that is what I go with.
I have his obit, but I assume it was written by someone other than him. However he was well known in the town, and there was his wife. However she was later admitted to an insane asylum, so we can’t be sure how accurate it is.

I have done soooooo many searches, I cant even remember them all, and what I have found is that for information in Ireland, I have decided that I need to go through a place called the Roth House. They are a historical society in Kilkenny, and they have told me that they DO indeed have information on my family. However they do charge 99 Euro, and last time I checked that was over 130 dollars, so it will be a while before I can do that.

I have not been able to find any certain any information on him or his family before 1870, and that is what I am really interested in at this point. Let me know what you think, and thank you for all your ideas and suggestions I look forward to getting more.

An article about the hanging can be found on the Washington State Secretary of State old newspaper website. Here is the link to the search page:

It is actually a sad story, as vigilantes stormed the jail and lynched him. The article states his widow and children took his remains to Pomeroy for burial.

The archives show he was tried in Columbia County, Washington State.

In the 1900 census my grandmother,Nancy Graham, her first four children, Nettie, Bevin V, Frank K and Jerlie and her mother, Katherine Wilson, are living with her uncle and aunt, Alexander and Elizabeth Keith and two of their children in Meadow precinct. My grandfather is not listed on the census. He is back with the family in 1910 and obviously was around before that since my dad was born in 1905 in Willada, Whitman County. The oldest child, Nettie was dead from TB before 1905 and is buried in a cemetery just outside of St John. Have you seen anything in your research in the area about William R. Graham. My email address is n_graham@hotmail.com. I'd like to get the Graham line back to Scotland before the clan AGM in 2010, but I've still got to get beyond Arkansas in 1850.

My great-grandfather was Anna Ellen (Humphreys) Jones' son Herbert Henry Jones. I have some information on Anna Ellen and her husband (and their parents, as well as more recent family history), but not a lot. Would love to compare notes and share what I have.

Does anyone have information on Jacob Goss Sr. Born in 1670 in Switzerland and Came to Pennsylvania. And has two sons that I know of and that is Jacob Goss Jr. born 4-16-1772 and Frederick Goss (which I have no info about).I need Info about Jacob Goss Sr. and his wife and parents.

My 5th great grandfather is Jacob Goss born on 4-16-1772 and was married to Salome Doomy. There son Henry Goss (my 4th great grandfather) was born Feb 25, 1798. I not sure how many kids Jacob and Salome have but I do have where they were born and died. If you need more info. let me know and I will be happy to help you.

Hi Lydia, the only person I found was Ella Miller and family in 1930 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., WA.

When and where was Lottie born? Was Lottie her first name or was that a shortened version of Charlotte?

When and where was William Stephen Miller born? What was your father's name and when and where was he born?

When and where was Ella Miller born? What was her husband's name? Was she married?

When you enter a request you need to supply all the info you know. We just have to have more info to work with; especially with a surname as common as Miller.

Do you know where he died other than Garfield County?

You can send an email asking for an obituary to askalibrarian@secstate.wa.gov. They will search the newspaper microfilm for one hour for free & email the results to you.

I'd also check out www.rootsweb.com, choose databases, choose USA, choose Washington, choose Garfield county and see if they have any old obits posted. Rootsweb and USGenWeb are wonderful resources!

The three largest cemeteries in the County aren't indexed yet. See www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/washington/counties/garfield/garf....

You could try Random Acts Genealogical Kindness, www.ragk.com and see if there is a volunteer in that county or one next to it who would do a look up.

Also try to Google the names of those cemeteries and see if you can locate the sextant. Good Luck!

I need to clarify who I am, William Stephen Miller. My wife and I share an ancestry.com account. She is Lydia. Since posting my short curt inquiry (I think I left my computer and that is what got posted) I found most of what you posted. My father was Louis Garrison Miller b.13 Sept 1932 d. 21 April 1989. His father was Louis L Miller b. 1902 in Oregon d. 1967. He is buried in Pomeroy, WA. His father was Oliver Perry Miller, married to Martha J Garrison.

Lottie Dunham Miller was my grandmother, married to Louis L Miller. (Unknown what the "L" stood for. He went by "Ted").
Lottie was a school teacher, she died when my father was 4 years old, in 1936. I don't know what the cause of her death was. I have a copy of Lottie and Louis' marriage license app. They only had one child, my father. My father then lived with Ella Miller, his aunt, in Pomeroy, WA all the way through high school. It is told in my family that there were some hard feelings with the Crumpackers over where my father was going to live.

I don't believe the Lottie Dunham married to Nat Ramsey is the same Lottie. She died in Mountain Home, ID in 1940. My Lottie died in Pocatello, ID in 1936.

Thank you for contacting me! My grandfather was Anna Ellen (Humphreys) Jones' son Louis Oscar Jones, brother of your Herbert. I know little about Herbert, but I believe he is in a few of the photos I've inherited. I also have one photo of Owen and Jane Humphreys, a couple of Anna, and one of Frank Reeve Jones.
