Re: Richard Monroe/Melvina DeWeese

If the evidence you cite for them being in Ferry County in 1910 is because their names appear on the marriage record, it does NOT mean they lived in Ferry County. They are simply listed as Robert's parents. The witnesses to the marriage were J E Ferrier and Edna Seward.

Last week I provided you with the 1880 census info for Richard and Melvina:

1880 Census
Augusta, Butler, Kansas
52/53 Ferrier, James E, w, m, 32, married, teamster, Kansas, Don't know
Mary J, w, f, 19, wife, married, house keeping, Ind, KY, Ind
52/54 Monroe, Richard P, w, m, 43, married, Brakeman, Canada, Canada, Canada
Melvina, w, f, 23, wife, married, Housekeeping, Indiana, KY, Ind
Juliett, w, f, 6/12, Nov, dau, single, Kans, Canada, Ind
Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Augusta, Butler, Kansas; Roll: 375; Family History Film: 1254375; Page: 82C; Enumeration District: 156; Image: 0045.

Robert's marriage record says he was born in San Antonio, Texas (marriage record says "Sanintone" which is how they pronounce it!)

Perhaps, especially considering Richard's advanced age (born about 1837), you should be looking in Bexar county, Texas:

1910 Census
San Antonio (Ward 7), Bexar, Texas
828 Victoria Street
Monroe, Richard, boarder, m, w, 53, wd, Canada, Canada, Canada, hack driver, Transfer Co
Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: San Antonio Ward 7, Bexar, Texas; Roll: T624_1532; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 0053; Image: 744; FHL microfilm: 1375545.

The above doesn't 'exactly' match the information from the 1880 census for birth year/age, but the name is the same and the place of birth is the same, and he is living in San Antonio, Texas, where Robert says he was born.

Following Richard Monroe through city directory entries shows him boarding with John Horan as early as the 1883 directory. It might mean Melvina had already died (maybe from child birth - Robert born 1882???) or perhaps they had split up, or even he's simply boarding somewhere because he works on the railroad. Of course it doesn't necessarily mean that Melvina and Robert weren't boarding with him. Women were not shown in the early directories unless they were a widow/head of household.

1883 San Antonio, Texas, City Directory
Monroe, Richard, condr L & G N R R, bds John Horan

1885 San Antonio, Texas, City Directory
Monroe, Richard M, expman, r ss San Luis bt S.

My Greatgreatgrandparents Richard Monroe dob abt 1837 & Melvina DeWeese dob abt 1858 lived in Ferry county abt 1910. I can find 2 references for them one of which is the marriage certificate of Della Kent and Robt "Harry" Monroe in 1910 in Republic, WA. Harry lived with the DeWeese family
when he was 11 and 17. The Monroe family lived all over WA State including Okanogan for many years. The DeWeese and Monroe families have been intertwined for years, but I can't find either Richard or Melvina anywhere, Anyone know antthing about this family?

The town of Meteor no longer exists.

There's a cemetary there but no record of a Jeffries (Washington State Digital Archives).

I looked at the Inchelium ED of the 1940 census and I did not see a Jeffries listed.

I think you best bet would be to flesh out all the details possible on the parents and siblings and maybe you'll find a clue there. Look for their obituaries, sometimes they're a gold mine of info.

Keep in mind that even though Ferry had been split off from Stevens County, I've found records into the 1940s from Ferry that were filed in Stevens.

Good luck.

I am looking for any information on John Short and his family who came to Nelson Washington about 1898. He homesteaded at Day Creek on the Kettle River south of Nelson. He was a school teacher at the Nelson School from 1899-1892 and probably taught at other schools in this area. He moved south to Malo about 1810. Also any information on Charles Rubin Short and his family who moved to Danville in 1909, lived in the old Nelson store for a year then moved onto John Short's homestead in 1910 where his family lived for years.

Now that you provided a date to work with...

A 1912 Bureau of Indian Affairs book:
http://books.google.com/books?id=QWNGAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA8&amp...

This also published 1912:
http://books.google.com/books?id=GoTNAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA245&a...

But, your answer is probably involving research:

Postal Service:
http://www.archives.gov/research/post-offices/#where

You could also try records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

You have a photograph taken in front of a sign indicating Troy Post Office. Of these 50, are any identifiable, are you looking to see when the picture was taken so you could "age" a person in it? I don't need the answer, just wondering

If Susan doesn't know... Probably no one on here does. You can also post pictures here...where it says "Attach a file."

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

I have a photo of a group of about 50 people standing in front of a large building with a sign 'Troy Post Office.' From the looks of the clothes, I am guessing it was taken about 1910. I have no info on this photo what so ever. I was hoping to get an approximate date from the name change from Troy to Inchelium. Susan Dechant of NE Wa Hist Society
also has a copy of the photo.

Inchelium is a community west of the west shore of Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake across the Columbia River from Gifford in east central Ferry County. The 2010 census shows 409 inhabitants

Inchelium was relocated from an earlier site in the early 1940s. Old Inchelium had been located on the banks of the Columbia River before the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam. As the waters rose behind the dam, the town had to be moved. A description of life in the last years of Old Inchelium and of the move can be found in Lawney Reyes' memoir White Grizzly Bear's Legacy: Learning to be Indian and his history/memoir B Street: The Notorious Playground of Coulee DamThe Inchelium Indian sub-agency is nearby.

Before the lake was created by the reservoir behind Grand Coulee Dam, the town was east of its present site and was connected with Gifford by cable ferry. It was moved to a higher bench and retained its name.

Two earlier names were Buffalo and Troy. The present name was given by government surveyors when they mapped the town It was their interpretive spelling of the San Poil Indian name En-char-lay-um or En-ch'lay-um, which is said to mean where big water meets little water, or a meeting place among three waters. It refers to the confluences of nearby Hall and Stranger creeks with the Columbia River.

The 1905 listing of post offices in Ferry County does not identify any of those names (Beulah, Boyds, Curlew, Danville, Keller, Laurier, Meteor, Orient and Republic.

The US Census does not show occupants living in those named towns. Perhaps there never was a US Post Office for anything other than Inchelium.

I will go through my pictures. I dont have hardly any of Phillis but I may have forgotten. The Album is yours for the postage. Is that okay? Its the third album we have found and done research and found homes for them.
The Album is in bad shape. I could retrieve photos out and send them. Whatever you decide. I just remembered Phillis
was so short and round with, as us children used to say, (little Bird Legs) No pun. She was very hard of hearing too. Morris was very tall, maby 6foot2 or 3. He liked a nip once in a while and he kept it hid in the downstairs chimney in a little nook he built. If Phillis found him sipping, she really let him know how she felt. Yes, they were good people. I will get back to you in a few days.
Shirley Bly

Hi Shirley,

Oh, thanks for this information. Phyllis is my great aunt, my granddad's sister, although she emigrated before he was born. I just lost my Dad (Phyllis's nephew), but I was able to show him my only photo of Phyllis before he died - could you scan in any of the photos and email them, do you think? I'd just love to see anything. Or if you're willing to part with the album I'd gladly buy it from you to add to my archive of family documents.

The story about travelling with an aunt is interesting. The family story (only very vaguely remembered when I asked about it) was that Phyllis went to Canada for a holiday with relatives living in canada, possibly in British Columbia. While she was there the relative's orchard burned down and there wasn't enough money for a ticket home for Phyllis. Haven't been able to find anything else about this tale, but Phyllis was working in a hotel in Washington State in 1910 census.

Regards,
Ellie

Phillis , as I remember said she was a small child when she travelled to america or Canada. She travelled with an aunt
who maby had raised her, She was sure taught with manners and she taught us girls and boys rules when you were at her house. She taught in love. I have an old photo of my sister in law that Phillis dressed Georgia up as a Hawaiian or a Polonesian. She could make costumes out of paper mache for five or six of us at a time. We at one time were Irish dancers. I always thought Morris and Phillis should be recognized more as pioneers. We cleaned out an old shed for our mother when she rented, Lodoens were passed away then. I told Ellen VanDoren, I found an old album with Fred Lodoen old Photos. In bad shape but she said just keep it for now and if she needed it she would contact me. I would give now to a family member if they wish. Shirley Bly

Hi Shirley,

Thanks for this information - Morris and Phyllis do seem to have been a lovely couple. Did she ever tell you why she emigrated? She left England in 1901 according to the US censuses, but she'd only have been 8 or 9 then, and she seems to have travelled alone.

Regards,
Ellie

We came to Keller 1944. Phillis and Morris were very special. My sister in law Georgia Largent at one time was engaged to Paul. The Ladoens were always there for you. We had plays and dances many get togethers for the children. Morris at one time made the boys skis out of barrel staples. I remember Phillis said in earlier days she dressed and prepared the deceased before burial. I and my sister went to school with Ivan and EllaMae Sterley. Phillis played for our church and she could really roll out music on that piano. Soo many good memories, much more history to tell.

As to your name of Curlew, family history would be about the only way to identify how it came to be. If your family was Jones, then moved to Ferry County, Washington, and it suddenly was Curlew, you might have your answer. Surnames are very interesting research. Some are based on professions, some on Americanized/Angelicanized names from the "old country." Some, especially Scandinavian are based on the name of the farm or parish from where they came (Patronymics). Some were just adopted by someone wishing to have a different name than as born...for whatever reason (prison, hiding, long..long names, Foreign names during times of war, etc).

The New York Passenger lists has a Cathn (Catheryn?) Curlew born 1818 arriving 23 Aug 1848. Irish, English, Canadian, etc.

Perhaps the Curlew birds were named by someone named Curlew.

Interesting,
Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

The poster identifying how it was named is correct. The Tacoma Library has a database of Washington Place names that reads:

This community is south of the British Columbia boundary at the confluence of Curlew Creek and the Kettle River in Ferry County. A mining town, it was established by prospectors during the 1890s. It was named in 1896 by Guy S. Helphrey, who used the name of the creek. Curlew Creek and Curlew Lake were named because large numbers of curlews nested in the vicinity to a distance several miles southward. The Indian name for the lake was Karanips, which means curlew.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

After 1930 it is much more difficult to find info about people.

You might have better luck if you post on the Georgia, Missouri and Florida Message Boards. If you know which county he was in for each state, post on those Message Boards.

Also you can post on the Ferry Surname Message Board. If one doesn't exist for Ferry, ask RootsWeb to create one for you. Successful Searching!

Thank you so much for your help. I must have made my request rather obtuse. I am an Eilenberger from the Palestine, Texas, bakery and have numerous family pictures of the bakery from 1898 to current. Robert Eilenberger from Republic, Washington, is a new find and, when the census indicated that he too was a baker, I hoped to find a picture of his bakery as well. I thought it would be wonderful to put a picture of Robert's bakery with those I already have of our family bakery in Palestine.

Thank you again for your helpfulness. I hope a picture of Robert's bakery from 1900 - to 1930 surfaces.

Have a good day,
Deta (Dorothea) Eilenberger Rogillio

They may have pictures.
This picture is from 1989-1991
http://texashistory.unt.edu/data/SUM2006/PBL/HRSPT_4/101-200...

--I did find other OLD images in the alltheweb image database (use the above alltheweb, enter your query and then switch to images.

I am looking for a picture of the Eilenberger Bakery in Republic which was owned by Robert and Marie Eilenberger from 1900 to, at least, 1920, according to the census. I was excited to finally trace Robert to Republic as we had always heard that a brother emigrated to the US with my great grandfather in 1881 and then went to Washington but, until the last month, it was simply a rumor. Thanks to ancestry.com I have finally found it was true and traced him to Republic. Unfortunately for me, Robert and Marie had no children so no long lost cousins to be found. My grandfather and father also owned an Eilenberger's Bakery in Palestine, Texas, at about the same time. It would be wonderful to have pictures of both bakeries. I would appreciate any help you could give me on where to find historical pictures of Republic. Thank you, Deta Eilenberger Rogillio
