I'm looking for descendants in Ferry County of George Hougland and Marian/Marion Antoinette ("Nettie") Abbott Hougland. Both, and other family members, are buried in the Republic Cemetery. My husband's family is related to the Abbott's through Marian's mother Sarah Ann Cook Abbott who is the sister of Peter Cook. Her father was Eleazer Cary Abbott. The Cook family settled in Michigan, Indiana, and Iowa. The Cook and Abbotts were originally from New York. We have researched this family for quite some time and would very much like to share our information with any Hougland/Abbott descendants. Thank you.

Hi Karin, I don't know how successful you'll be with a generic posting like this. I've had better results by tracing the family through the Census and finding death info for the last member. I use that death info to get a copy of the obit. After I have the obit, I use www.switchboard.com to find contact info for descendants in the obit. Also, Republic is a small town and you're probably related to any Hougland there.

I found George and family living in Garfield, Whitman Co., WA in 1910. George W., head household, b. OH, 76 yrs old, marr 46 yrs, own income; Marion A., b. IN, 63, had given birth to 12 children who were alive in 1910; Denna, dau, b. IA, 24, single and Loyd L., single, b. IA, 20.

In 1920 Lloyd L. Hougland and family were living in East Republic, Ferry Co., WA. Lloyd L., b. IA, 29, ranger forest service; Allene L, b. IA, 25; Floyd W. b. WA, 5; Velda I., sister, single, b.IA, 35, saleswoman variety store.

A Floyd W. Hougland died 15 Aug 1977, Colville, Ferry Co.; age=63; Estimated Birth year=abt. 1914; Residence=Colville per death cert #019230. Source: WA Death Index 1940-1996. Colville is another small town.

You can get a copy of any obit published in WA State by contacting the Washington State Library, http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Provide the name, death date & location. They will search the newspaper microfilm for 30 minutes at no charge & respond with what they find.

After you receive his obit, use www.switchboard.com to look up contact info for survivors in his obit. Successful Searching!

Floyd Hougland lived at 592 Cedar Street in Colville. Also identified at tha address is James W. Hougland, born July 1976, 509-684-4280. Also there Mina E, Virginia L, born Feb 1944.

Judy, thanks for all those helpful suggestions! I will try to get the obits. Also, I realize that my query was probably much too general, so here are a few details I know about the Hougland family:

Marian Antoinette (“Nettie”) Abbott (also spelled Marion, Maryean) was born 29 Jan 1848 in Elkhart County, Indiana. Her parents were Eleazer C. Abbott and Sarah Ann Cook Abbott. She had a sister Alcena Marie Abbott Markle (she died 1917 in Iowa) and a brother Cary Abbott (he probably moved to White Salmon, Klickitat, Washington, prior to 1917). The Abbott family moved from Elkhart Co, Indiana, to Iowa about 1863 and settled near the Little Turkey River (Utica Township) in Chickasaw County.

Marian married George Wilson Hougland (born 1833 in Ohio, and a neighbor in the Utica Township) on 8 March 1865 in New Hampton, Chickasaw Co, Iowa. She died on 29 August 1934 and is buried in the cemetery in Republic as is her husband, who died on 26 March 1926.

In 1880, Marian and her family lived in Jackson, Winneshiek Co., Iowa, where George was a farmer. In 1897, they are selling their land there and moved west. In her sister Alcena's obituary in 1917 she is referred to as living in Spokane, Washington.
