Hi Michael--If you are cousin once removed of Gilbert Gilbreath 1908-1984 son/of Lee Samuel Gilbreath 1870-1950 by his 2nd wife Ione E White 1881-1972, then I assume you have same relationship to 2 daughters born to Lee Samuel & his first wife Ella Pollard 1873-1894, namely Ethel 1892-1973 who md Earnest Harold Denny 1890-1972 and Ella Blanche 1894-1988 who was 2nd w/o Dr Ellsworth Adelbert Archer 1870-1951. My connection to this family is through Ella Pollard who was d/o George Tompkins Pollard 1835-1919 & Harriet L. Wiseman 1842-1926. As you state you have info on Gilbreath family back to 1640's, wonder if you know if there are any living descendants of these 2 dau's of Lee Samuel & Ella Pollard. I'm not aware of Ella Blanche Gilbreath having children since Dr Archer was 36 years older than her; but believe her younger sister Ethel Gilbreath & Earnest Denny had at least 2 dau's: Dorothy b.c1917 & Lois 1922-1995 who both md; Dorothy to_?_Goodhew or_?_Dennis; Lois to George Cantright 1915-2003. SSDI shows a Dorothy Dennis 1917-1997 who d.Walla Walla, WA who I assume could be dau/of Ethel & Earnest Denny but have no proof & would like to hear from you or anyone else who is interested in sharing info on this family.
Don Houk in Tokyo
houk.don@jp.kline.com

Re: Bartges

I looked in the listings on www.findagrave.com and found a George H Bartges in the Dayton City Cemetery, Columbia County:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ba...;

But, using Maggie Rails cemetery transcription data, this is the grave of George H, ather of Agnes, Mrs Geo is also here, as are children:
http://www.mrail.net/wash/columbia.htm (the Dayton Cemetery)

I found your family tree on Ancestry.com so that helped a bit with additional information. It showed George Daniels had died in Dayton, Columbia Co. If Agnes and Thomas divorced in 1880, she may have already taken back her maiden name (although that was rare then). I also found other family trees on this family, some are JUST PLAIN WRONG. (I also had to laugh when I read your family tree, you show the marriage of Agnes and Thomas as a "Fist Marriage"... I had heard of shotgun weddings before; but, I guess they were a bit less violent).

The Oregon Archives: http://genealogy.state.or.us/
identified Agnes and Thomas Daniels were married in Linn County in 1871. Just enter last name of "Barges".

The Washington Archives: http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/default.aspx
shows, under Frontier Justice, Agnes and Thomas Divorce/Custody case, #225. The Columbia County Superior Court, "should" have a copy of that case. However, the law requiring County Clerks to keep records did not come until after Washington became a State, so they may have nothing. But, this appears to indicate there was a custody issue. But, George is not listed in the 1880 Census. Do you have other information that shows he had actually died? Some people see missing family in a census and think they had died, rather than looking at other possible events.

The 1880 Census for Columbia County, described as being "All outside of villages of Huntsville & Dayton is a part of County"., enumerated 1 June 1880:
Geo. H. age 48, farmer
Emily 43, Wife
Walter 16
Mary 13
Willie J 11
John 8
Warren 6
Stella M 4
"X" 1 (the writing is very faint). This appears to be a female.
Agnes Daniels, age 25, Divorced
--So, if George died in 1880, he died before June.

Your tree doesn't show the other children. The "Friedberg" tree shows several, also shows Geo H living in Walla Walla in 1894.
The Loomis Family Tree has a lot of information, but if you want to use it, first contact the owner, second VERIFY the information is correct:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9312544/person/-812528905?ssr...=

Now, do you know where his land was located in Columbia County? The Bureau of Land Management: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
has a database of land obtained under the Homestead Act:
http://www.legendsofamerica.com/AH-Homestead.html

Go to the BLM site, click on "Search Land Patents" in green. Do the zipcode. Then enter "Washington", last name "Bartges". You will see two lines of George H. The first one is 160 acres obtained on 7/23/1890. The second one is 156.77 acres obtained on 3/30/1881. (Click on the lines to see the information).

Once in the new window, click on the tab for Legal Land Description.

The 1881 land is shown as being in three locations of Township 10-N, Range 38 E, Section 18.
The 1890 land was in Township 10-N, Range 38-E, Section 20.
If you don't know where this land was located, I can show you. I won't describe how in this post, just ask.

I did find a Thomas Daniels in the 1880 census in Benton Co, a divorced man, born about 1848. I don't have enough information to determine if this is or is not the correct person.

Ron Bestrom

Here is a website that explains how to write a good query:
http://www.tedpack.org/goodpost.html

ALWAYS try to post the persons date of birth and place of birth. If you don't have that, give an approximate time period; parents, siblings, etc. Identify where they lived during what period of time. If a person can be found in the US Census (1930 and before) that really helps. People that read your posts do not have the information that you have.

I found your family tree posted online:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10389020/person/-522382216?ss...=
Very good start.

When you post, put in the link to your family tree. That also would answer a lot of questions a researcher may have.

Myra,
Welcome to Genealogy. You are now a Special Agent of the family. Your task is to investigate the crime scene for all clues and attempt to identify documentary evidence, as well as physical evidence leading to information about your Subject. I've been involved in genealogy research for about 30 plus years on my own family, but helping for the last 15 or so. As a career investigator, I've always likened genealogy to an investigation...it is and the techniques are similar.

You must start at the first crime scene...the first person in the family and then go back in time. Interview any living witnesses about where they were born, where they lived, their siblings, and what they remember about their parents. Document everything you learn in "Interview Notes".

Then begin to obtain documentary evidence. Obituaries, family albums, photo's, address books, Death Certificates, Birth Certificates. At the first crime scene, many of these will be easy to obtain. As you go back in time, more difficult for many reasons.

If you intend to use the computer for not only research, but also documentation, START NOW. Many use commercial genealogy family tree software, such as Family Tree Maker, etc. You might wish to use just a word processor, such as Microsoft Word to document information. You might wish to have a family tree, AND, word documents. This "Report of Investigation" will take on a life of its own. If you use online information, you will need to start a "Favorites" on your computer. First, a Directory called "Genealogy", then divide this with sub-directories of Different States, Countries, Cemeteries, Obituaries, etc. Then sub-directories to these, for example, under "States", you might have "X County", "Y County", etc. Each link would then be readily accessible.

Major search sites such as Ancestry.com have the US Census, World War I Draft Card images, State Marriage, Death databases, etc. It is a great site for finding information; but there is the cost. Your local library might offer it for free with your library subscription. Heritage Quest, also a library free site, has census and old genealogy books online. I use it at home. For current newspaper obituaries, some libraries offer News Bank or other newspaper sites. For census there is also Family Search Labs: http://labs.familysearch.org/ . There is the Ellis Island website for immigrant arrivals. If your family is of Norwegian Descent, the Digitalarkivet has the Norwegian Census, emigration records, etc. There is emigrant records for England, ship record databases, Canadian Census online.... So, start your "Favorites" in directories, you will need them.

There are also so many helpers out there, Rootsweb sites, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness.

BUT....The dark side... There are people that try to help will give you bad leads, suggestions on people that can easily be proven to be the wrong family. So, you MUST look at each clue, individually and make decisions to eliminate or further keep the "Suspect" under surveillence. I have seen people that say...this was your person, only to show he was a son of people born in the wrong country. Genealogy research is like a criminal investigation. You MUST PROVE beyond a shadow of a doubt that your SUSPECT is indeed the person you seek. Otherwise, you might just "convict" the wrong person.

Have fun.
Ron Bestrom

Hi Myra,
Looks like you have a good start for someone who just started.

Census records make a wonderful outline of a family. You can request copies of obituaries which add a lot more information too. Can't take everything in an obituary as absolute truth because mistakes are made.

Another thing that is important to do is to collect the birth, marriage and death records for each person. My family didn't do that and for 40 years they had a mistake which was published again and again and wasn't found until another family member tried to join the Mayflower Society.

When you get to 1790 and earlier, you can find the information in books published which contain births, marriages and death info. I use Google Books a lot.

I'd search for a book on Chester Co, PA History because your family lived there very early. Also find the Chester Co PA Genealogy Society on-line and see what they have. Read about PA because it's a very challenging state to find records in because the county boundary lines were always changing. A family could live in the same house for 40 years but the records will say three different counties. Successful Searching!

First try to obtain the obit, it might identify burial location:

The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx .

Ron Bestrom

Hello,

I am a descendent of Ward Rinehart who wrote the Covello book.

I have a copy of the Covello book but I would sure appreciate any Rinehart information from your "old family scrapbook with some of the family clippings related to Covello".

Wards father Mike and his brothers, Lee (Leander), James Howell, William Lafayette and Joel Robertson all went together to Washington from Arkansas as Ward mentions in his book. I included the brothers names in case you see their names in the scrapbook.

Thanking you in advance.
Eulimma

Re: day of death & obit please--MARGARET ALLMON died __ Jan 1975 Dayton

The other poster wrote:
? > A Margaret Allmon, Last Residence=Dayton, Columbia Co., b. 16 Feb. 1904 died Jan. 1975. Her soc. sec. # was assigned in WA before 1951. Source: Social Security Death Index.

The Social Security Death Index lists persons that have died whose deaths were reported to the Social Security Administration.

The "last residence" is not necessarily where a person lived. It could be the address where the Death Benefit was sent, today about $255.00, to a spouse or other person that paid for burial, funeral home/Attorney/etc. It also could be just from a notification of their death. It is not necessarily where they lived, it "usually is; but it is NOT a exact address identifier. A death certificate may have been sent to the Social Security Administration identifying the person died.

So, in this case, Margaret Allmon may have died in Walla Walla and had lived in Dayton, or lived in Walla Walla, died in Walla Walla, but the Dayton address came into play as being for a family member, the funeral home, etc. You CAN NOT assume until the facts are proven.

ALSO, The Social Security Administration is NOT responsible for the SSDI. It is based on the SSA's Master Death Index. It is NOT based on death of persons having a Social Security Number. The Master Death Index is SOLD to various parties that use the data for their own SSDI. Many believe the SSDI has all the deaths of persons having a SSA, this is NOT true. You can also find a person on one of the SSDI listings, but not another.

Ron Bestrom

The service as teacher for Mr. Morgan (I still give teachers the same respect) may have been in several school Districts. Individual districts would have records, but due to the time he served, that was before Washington became a State in 1889. So, if records exist, they would be in archives.

I would first start with the Public Disclosure Office for the Superintendent of Public Instruction. They may have accreditation files, or work service records. Call them instead of just sending in a form. Ask your question about potential records:
http://www.k12.wa.us/publicrecordsrequest/

They may indicate any such records would be in the Archives of the State of Washington, held by the Secretary of State:
http://www.secstate.wa.gov/archives/archives_state.aspx

Ron Bestrom

Hello, if your husband is a CYRUS descendant, then we are likely related, as my grandmother was a CYRUS by birth as well. Which CYRUS was his grandmother? All from that generation in our line are deceased.

The ledger is not for sale, but if you advise who you are interested in, I can check it for relevant information. A typical entry will have a name at the top of the page, and then what items were purchased and the cost of each. If someone paid their account in goods, then that is shown as well. There is no genealogical information included per se, but the items purchased would help provide context. Full dates are lacking. The ledger is oversized, and not in great condition because of mold.

I am still trying to establish the facts re: the existence of the store, as the ledger is undated as far as I can tell. Since the photo (separate from the ledger) dates to about 1903, I am guessing the store was in operation around that time. I believe it was Norman CYRUS, my g-grandfather, who ran the store in or near Covello, although the census for 1900 and 1910 does not indicate that as an occupation for him.

Please let me know if you have any details about the store itself. Thank you.
Dayton Cemetery, Burial Records Lookup

I am looking for a couple who were both buried in the Dayton cemetery:

Robert A. McDowell
b. Jun 6 1866
d. Dec 25 1936

and his wife...

Emma Jane McDowell
b. April 1877
d. May 9 1953

I would love some headstone photos, but what I desperately need are Robert A. McDowell's burial records/death records and his obituary. I can NOT find his father's name anywhere because he ran away from home when he was 13 years old after his father died in a different state, but not sure where. I'm really, really hoping that I can get these records as they may hold information I don't have yet! Emma's obituary or death records would be nice also.

Thanks!

I have the entire history of the community of Covello and it's outlying areas complete with a pretty indepth genealogy of those early pioneers/settlers. The source is a book written by Ward Rinehart, son of Mike and Molly Rinehart, grandson of Sam English and Lizzie Paul.

My connection comes through the Paul side. My interest in Covello comes from researching a Scots Irish family clan as they tediously migrated through the eastern states and then gradually through the generations westward until a final journey over the Oregon trail in 1862 when 'Western' fever and gold discoveries became too much of a lure to many of the farmers and businessmen.

Ward Rinehart's book covers the westward migrations of several of the early pioneers families including his own, which include the Rinehart, Paul, English families. The book is not indexed and so finding tidbits is slow process. I would be happy to try looking up information. I also have an old family scrapbook with some of the family clippings related to Covello.

Hi,
Good to find kinfolk of Ward. He was the grandson of Lizzie English. She was an aunt to my ancestor and so of course they had an interest in each other's families back then. My scrapbook is in storage right now but I posted all the articles I knew were related to those families on either the Columbia county or Walla Walla county site a couple years or so ago. You might check for them there.

I'll try to dig the scrapbooks out and see if any of these other names are in there. Right now I'm building a sort of index for Ward's book and trying to put all the genealogy that's in there in a more readable manner. So far I'm about halfway through the book.

Send me your email and I'll send you more information.
I have the book "Covello; A Pioneer Remembers," written in 1975 by a then aged Ward Rinehart. He was very generous in his information about others who lived in the community and their genealogy. He was less forthcoming with his own. There is information in the book about some of his children but not all of them and the same goes with wives or other women he may have had children with.

When Ward wrote the book he was married to Mildred. He does not mention anything about her last name or other information. Nor does he tell anything of his past relationships. He had a child while living in CA and attending Stanford University. He leaves that out of the book as well as the child and the name of it's mother. He mentions some of his children and a little about them on page 91. He mentions Mildred in the dedication.

If you can give me more information on Nelle and her family that would be great and maybe help his descendants with their family history.

Census records indicate the family was in the U.S.A. about 1886-1894 and their year of immigration to Canada was 1894. William H. Spencer married Maggie May McKinley April 23, 1902. Does this look familiar to anyone? Janet

I recently came upon a letter that says my gr. grandfather William Jasper Morgan, AKA Jap or Jasper, taught school in Columbia Co. Washington. It would have had to be between 1880-1896. He taught in many schools and could have taught in more than one in Washington or Columbia County. I know he also taught in Oregon and in California, but have no clue what counties. I would appreciate any help finding out the names of any schools he taught at in your county, and if by chance there is a picture I would be glad to pay for a copy or just e mail me a copy. He taught with and became a friend of a man by the name of R.O. Hawks, They corresponded many years later. The last letter I have is dated 1922 and Mr. Hawks was living in Pendleton OR. My e mail address could have changed since I registered with RootsWeb so it is landeschris@yahoo.com. Thanks, Chris
