Bells Mountain, Clark County, WA Family History

I am searching for my relatives who lived in an area called "Bell Mountain" in Clark County, WA in the lat 1800's and early 1900's. The family names I am looking for are Charles Bertwell Checkley and his wife Robertina Gordon Abigail (Taylor)Checkley. Charles was born in 1856 in Canada (English) and Robertina was born in New Zealand in 1872. They were married somewhere in 1895. Robertina arrived in the USA from British Isles in 1888 and arrived in the Port of Boston, MA. I do not know where Charles Checkley entered the USA. Together, they had eight children: Beulah, Myrtle, Georgia, Charles, Laurel, Helen, Roberta, and Norman. Also immigrating to Clark County, WA with Robertina was her sister, Margaret (Taylor) Richter - married to Hermann Alexander Richter from Germany. Can anyone help me find burial location in WA or Portland area for Charles and Robertina Checkley and Margaret and Hermann Richter? Thank you!

Something of value to Clark county WA researchers;
(an announcement in the Clark County newspaper today, 8 August 2008)

County puts archive of marriage records online.
Clark County marriage records from 1889 to 1977 are now available online.
They’re the latest addition to the ever-growing Washington State Digital Archive at www.digitalarchives.wa.gov
Marriage certificates include the names of the bride and groom, witness and officiant, along with the date of marriage.
They’re searchable by name of bride and groom and by year of marriage.
Until now, such records had been available in hard copy only. For more information, contact the Washington State Digital Archives at 509-235-7509, or, digitalarchives@secstate.wa.gov

The records are very good along with the digital images of the certificates, having extracted many today myself.

Good luck in your hunt!
Looking for descendants of John (1836 - ) & Rebecca (Cantonwine) Turner (abt 1848 - ) who lived in Clark County, WA (1880 census) and Washougal, Clark Co., WA (1900 census). Offspring were Charles, Minnie, Ida, Eva, Oscar and Harry. Eva married J. Slaughterback about 1891 and had two daughters, M______, and Ida; Oscar married Leona about 1897 and had two children, Vera, and Orin. Rebecca is the daughter of Charles and Julia (Denslow) Cantonwine (1824 - ). That's all I know at this point. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge of this family, especially when Julia died and where she might be buried. She was widowed and living with John and Rebecca in 1880.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Clark County, Washington as his home of record.

Soldier: WILLIAM RYAN KEENAN
Born: 1923 Caucasian
Date of loss: November 1, 1950 KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 46 families in Washington that have not been located. There is one family from Clark County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Was there ever a part of Clark County known as Shanghai? I found a marriage record on the Washington State Digital Archives for George W Atkins (of Fern Prairie, Camas area) and Josephine Kays (of Shanghai). The marriage took place 19 Jun 1900 in Shanghai. I can't imagine this couple, 18 & 16 years old respectively, would have married in Shanghai,China - especially since they show up on the 1900 censuses with their parents in Fern Prairie.

Thank you for your assistance with this mystery!

Does anyone know in which cemetery she was buried, if this is true? I'm finding nothing in my searches.

I am told her full name was Hallie Latham Spraker Strickman/Strickland Illingworth (but have also seen it as Illingsworth and Illingworth).

It appears at one place (sorry I don't have reference at the moment, except is the family "John E. Carter" and one other on this page).

Nick

WILSON, TURMAN AND UTAH 1950'S

The 9th of August 1950, Turman and Utah Wilson were sentenced to die for the murder of Jo Ann Dewey. It wasn't until 03 Jan 1953 that they were excecuted. My grandfather was a patrolman with the Oregon Highway Patrol (Now the Oregon State Police) when the Wilson's escaped in the 1940's - he was one of the police officers that caught Turman Wilson. He was then with the Clark County Sheriff's department in the 1950's when they were in trouble again. He saved a few newspaper articles from that time in a scrap book, and right now that is all I have, as my grandfather passed away a few years ago.

My mother and I have begun researching this case, and are interested in any information any one may have - we are even interested in accountings, if someone recalls that event. We are collecting articles from the Columbian microfilm, and some other newspapers, and are looking into getting a hold of other research material. Ideas, information, suggestions would be great.

Thanks!

Tracie Clawson

I will gladly compensate you for your research time and any copying fees, as long as it's within reason.
I would be looking for one or any of the following:
Internment record
Burial record/Church record
Death record

I know the approximate date of both ggparent's birth, but know that they were not born in Washington state (as I've checked). I have been told that they were buried in the Manor Wilson Bridge Cemetery in Clark Co., Washington.
My gg grandfather died abt. 1942, and my gg grandmother died abt. 1938. It is believed that they share one headstone.

If anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it as I live in a small town in Alberta, Canada with little resources and no microfiche reader at our local library. You can contact me at the email address provided. Thank you in advance.

Hello,

Am hoping someone on the list can help with this question. I have an address of 1710 Railroad Ave, where ancestors of mine lived in Vancouver WA in 1922. I'm hoping they are on the 1920 census and haven't been able to find them using the usual search methods (thru Ancestry).

Is there an easy way to determine which precinct/district this address would have been in? There are quite a few precincts and unfortunately this particular street isn't mentioned in the brief descriptions of the precincts/districts. I want to avoid having to scroll thru the WHOLE census for Vancouver for 1920..... (GG)

I'm looking for the Frederick Winsor family. Thanks for any suggestions.

Colleen Lill

VOLSTORFF, Herman Henry of Camas

Does the Clark Co. library or courthouse have indexes for deaths or marriages such that someone may be able to do a look-up for me? One member of my husband's VOLSTORFF family left Illinois for Camas, and I don't know what happened to him. I've found Herman Henry VOLSTORFF, wife Mabel, and daughter Florence on the 1920 and 1930 Census for Camas. Herman was a butcher prior to his arrival in Camas, and his occupation on the Camas census states "meat market" so I'm assuming he kept up with his trade. Daughter Florence must have graduated from Camas High School because I found a Volstorff (no first name) in the transcription of the 1922 year book in the Clark Co. web site's archives. But, Florence wasn't married as of the 1930 Census.

Herman was born 28 Dec. 1878 in Elgin, Kane Co., IL, and his wife Mabel was born abt. 1885 in Illinois. Per the 1910 Census, they married abt. 1902 in Illinois, and daughter Florence was born abt. 1907 in Illinois. I don't know what brought them to Camas, but they arrived some time prior to the taking of the 1920 Census.

Is there an index to look for Herman's death in Clark Co.? Or, is there a marriage index to look for Florence's marriage? Both events would have taken place after 1930.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to make contact with Marsha Jerrow WURZER or her daughter, Vicki. I am researching the JERROW family and believe Marsha to be the daughter of Kenneth Robert JERROW and Ann Barbara LEKTORICH. I found an e-mail address for Vicki on Find A Grave, but apparantly it is no longer current. I would like to share information. I believe Marsha lives in or near Camas, WA and Vicki in or near Kelso, WA. If anyone has a current phone book and can send me an address or phone #, I'd appreciate it. I think Vicki is married to Jerry T. ERICKSON.
Thanks for the help.

Trublood/Houghland/Hauser

My great-grandfather Edward Franklin Trublood was born in Indiana 12 Feb 1865, married and had children in Indiana, went to Washington for a few years for some unknown reason, and then came back to Indiana to die in 1928. I can find where he is married to a Martha Houghland in Clark Co in the 1920 census. I do not know when he came to Clarke Co but it was after 1900. The strange thing is my granfather George B Hauser enlisted in the army in 1904 and was discharged in 1907 at Vancouver Barracks. He then goes to Indiana and married Edward Franklin's daughter. Did they know one anotherin Washington? Or did George Hauser come back to Indiana and tell Edward Franklin Trublood how nice it was in Washington. I cannot find Edward Franklin Truebood in the 1910 census in Indiana or Washington. I cannot find any of the Houghlands in the 1910 census. I cannot find a marriage record for Edward Franklin Trublood and Martha Houghland.

Does anyone have any ideas or information on the Truebloods, Houghlands, or Hauser during the 1900-1920 time period.

I have foudn that Trublood is indexed in census records as Trueblood, Trublood, and even Frublood.
