Info / obit for Charles Norton, 1855 - 1921, married to Mary McDermott

I'm looking for more information on the Charles Norton identified in the death record below. The birth date calculated from the information below is 8 May 1855. He is possibly my great-grandfather, but I would have to overcome these two issues:

1) An 1855 census lists my ggf's age as "3/12", which would place his birth month in March.
2) This death location is 1,800 miles from my ggf's hometown, which is where he grew up, where he lived most of his adult life and which is his residence as of the 1920 Census (which is the last record I have for him).

Two of his children were alive at the time: In 1920, one was in Texas and the other was in Big Horn County, Montana. Both had recently ended their railroad careers. I am not aware of any relatives in Washington, then.

Thanks for any clues

From https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3G8-G72

Name: Charles Norton
Event Date: 12 Oct 1921
Event Place: Kennewick, Benton, Washington
Gender: Male
Age (Formatted): 66 years 5 months 4 days
Birth Year (Estimated): 1855
Father's Name: John Norton
GS Film number: 1992760
Digital Folder Number: 4221119
Image Number: 2439
Reference ID: 67

It's great someone has been doing this. I started in late 1990's and 2000's and couldn't get many family members interested at that time. For our parents on the Rossignol side, it's been a lot of early deaths from either heart disease with the men or cancer with the women. But only one of our parents (Out of 9) lived a long life. So as me and my cousins age, we are having a hard time finding any real solid information about our Rossignol side. Our parents didn't share much with us because they lived a pretty rough and meager life until they were able to get out on their own. I'm excited to see the 1910 census is out. When I was trying to get info it wasn't out yet. I would like to know what you have learned about our family (the Willie and Mattie Rossignol heritage). Who were your grandparents?
I'm on Facebook if you want to chat that way. A lot of my Rossignol cousins are there too. https://www.facebook.com/cheryl.brantley.921
Hi Ron,
if you get this, how did you come up with the below info? I have tried to find this information for years and am intrigued that you were able to find it. My dad was Albert Rossignol and a lot of the siblings listed are my dad's siblings.

"HERE is Willie and Mattie, 1910, Aroostook County
Willie, age 21 (born circa 1888/1889), born in Maine, laborer, odd jobs.
Mattie, age 16, born in Maine, married 0 years, living in the home of:
Fred Rossignol, age 45, born in Canada, immigrated 1880.
Belzeba, age 38, born in Maine, mother of 12/7 living.
5 children shown.
--This William "could" be the William born in December 1891; although there is a two year difference in age. A common census mistake."

Thanks for your 2 items.

We have, then, that Alice married Nienkerk prior to 1943.

The 1911 Canada Census shows the family of Robert Nienkerk. I noticed Robert had a brother born in 1902. I found Otto Nienkerk buried at the Olney Cem. in Pendleton. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ni...;

It appears that Robert and Otto immigrated together from Canada. Robert landed at Prosser, and Otto in Pendleton.

Thanks

This appears to be Robert living with his parents in 1911. The name was spelled Neinkirk (or at least transcribed that way)
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=142856&am...

This also appears to be a likely match for Robert's brother Otto
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ni...;

Alice Davison and Robert Nienkerk

I'm trying to find a wedding document for Alice Davison and Robert Nienkerk. I believe the couple were married and lived together in Prosser. The date of their wedding would have to be between 1940 and 1948. Nienkerk was a lodger at the Ellis household, courtesy of the US Census in 1940. Robert Nienkerk died in Prosser in 1948 and is buried there. Apparently, this made Alice his widow.

I have found the naturalization registration for Nienkerk dated 1935 at Benton Co. courthouse. Nienkerk was born Whitewood, Saskatchewan. It appears he migrated to Prosser alone.

Nienkerk's family in Whitewood has not been found although there are currently Nienkerks living there.

Alice Davison was born in Juneau, Alaska, 1914. Her parents were James and Sevrine Davison. The Davisons came to Prosser in 1919 and operated "Davison's Dairy".

Alice' brother was John Davison and he was a long time Prosser resident. John was born 1917 in Juneau.

Alice Davison Nienkerk married Art Swink in Prosser in 1953. They promptly moved to Othello, Wash. This is the only instance I have of Alice signing her name Nienkerk.

The Yakima Valley Genealogical Society in 1975 published several volumes of records titled “Records of Yakima County, Washington 1869-1907 and Benton County, Washington 1905-1907.” The volume of death records did not mention any Kirklands. But William Kirkland is mentioned three times in “Volume IV, Probate Records and Naturalization Records.”

Probate Records, Yakima County, Wash.
Page 29
KIRKLAND, WM., d. Jan. 20 (or 28), 1900. Elizabeth Kirkland, wid., Admin. No children. Oct. 7, 1901 – May 2, 1903. Transf. to Benton Co.

Probate Records, Benton County, Wash.
Page 64
KIRKLAND, WM., d. Jan. 20 (or 28), 1900. Elizabeth Kirkland, wid., Admin. and sole heir. See Yakima Co. where probate completed.

Naturalization Records, Yakima County, Wash.
Page 73
KIRKLAND, WM., England, June 14, 1883

The preface in volume 4 has the comment that “residents of the Benton County area did not report as high a percentage of births or deaths as did those in other parts of Yakima County.” See attached.
Also, Elizabeth on previous census records was referred to as "Lizzie". So now that we have determined that Elizabeth was in Prosser in 1900, we still do not know what happened to William? Could he have been hospitalized during the 1900 census, or out of the area? He died in October though I have no proof he died in Prosser or anywhere nearby?

I suspect that this Libby Kirkland in the 1900 census is the one you’re looking for. The previous household on the census page is headed by Robert Moore, and a search of the land records at www.glorecords.blm.gov shows that William Kirkland and Robert Moore were on the same section of land.

William Kirkland, 3/13/1893, Meridian Willamette, Township 007N, Range 027E, Section 10 NW¼, Benton County, Washington

Robert Moore, 7/6/1893, Meridian Willamette, Township 007N, Range 027E, section 10 NE¼, Benton County, Washington
There is a Libby Kirkland living in Prosser, Yakima County in 1900. Unfortunately, the census said "could not learn anything more concerning this person" so no way of determining if it was your Elizabeth. No William with her.

I am looking for the exact date that he died and where? He was buried in Walla Walla at the Mountain View Cemetery on October 27, 1900. The City of Walla Walla website indicates he was living in Benton County (where in Benton County?) at the time, though Benton did not become a county until 1905? I cannot find him in the 1900 Census that was taken in June, 4 months before his death. His widow Elizabeth was living in Prosser during the 1910 census. Perhaps there's an obituary?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Ron and thank you for the response to my post. I made a family tree book to be given away at the reunion and have put in the obits of all the family who has passed away. Most of us are here in Louisiana and the obits are easy to find but the ones that are out of state are not so easy. I don't really know the children of Lou and Dorothy because they lived so far away from here and don't remember them coming to the reunions.I have the obit for Dorothy, I found it on the Einan's Funeral Home page. I find we learn a lot about our family that we didn't know from the obits. Thanks again for your reply. Karen

Let's expand a bit on the search question: Are you just trying to have a copy of the obit availabl for the reunion or are you trying to contact his children FOR the reunion?

I looked for an obit for Dorothy. I found a death notice only. I found a Vickie J. Owens born about the right time period...but the "correct" Vickie would have to have stayed unmarried. If you have additional information on the children, I could see if they can be found.

The WA Library, due to staffing cuts and budget, as well as mass amounts of requests, is taking six weeks. There was a Rose, in Benton County, that did obits: rosesullivan@clear.net

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Can anybody help me ? My name is Glynis Lloyd and i'am blood related to Ellis Lloyd who came to the USA in 1904. He married May Milne in South Dekota in 1915 and they had 3 sons. Raymond is the youngest of those sons and i'am very keen to find him or members of his family, if at all possible. I know that he lived in RICHLAND, BENTON, WASHINGTON. I have a picture of his father when he was about 9 yrs old and it also has Raymond's grandparents on it too. Ellis was from Llanfair, Merionethshire, Wales, and his parents were Ellis and Elizabeth Lloyd. Raymond's wife is called Laveta and i think he has a son called Earl.
That's all i know unfortunately, i live in the UK.
Any information would be a bonus and very much appreciated.
GL.

Re: Helen Mae Larson

In two family trees posted online, is found a Kenneth Carl Pearce, born 13 June 1921 in Jerome, Idaho. He died 24 April 1992 in Olympia, Thurston Co, WA. One tree identifies his wife as Helen Mae Larson. It identifies Helen as having died in 1994 in Scottsdale, Maricopa, Arizona. No further information. I sent a message to the owner to read this thread (But her last logon was six months ago). She might have more information, just not posted.

The Social Security Death Index:
Helen M. Boren, born 27 Feb 1933, died 15 December 1994, in Scottsdale, Maricopa Co, AZ.

In 1978 she was living in Imlay, Nevada, as Helen Boren. Also living there in 1978 was Homer A. Boren (other records indicate this may be her son). In 1990, Andrea B. Boren was living there. In 1995, Homer A is listed as living at 2620 E. Dianna Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85157

Go to www.zabasearch.com and look up Homer.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA
