I have Daniel J. Zent's diary of his family's journey from Colorado to Oregon in a covered wagon in 1877 and the story written by his son Frank P. Zent (11 years old on the trip) some thirty years later from the diary and his memories of the trip.

At the end of the story states:
"... and how we followed it to the Puget Sound; how the family began to grow up and drop away from the parent stat like leaves from the tree with the frosts of autumn; how the magic lure of the “Just Beyond” kept Father and Mother constantly on the move with a constantly decreasing family; and finally how a little band of us, gathered from the wooded hills of Puget Sound and the cities and prairies of the great, golden Inland Empire, one sad day stood watching them lower the remains of the husband, father, and sturdy old pioneer into his last resting place overlooking the beautiful city of Walla Walla, the Land of Promise that held our dreams during that long and weary trail over the great western prairies. But this would be the story of a new life in a new world. With the end of the diary we have reached the end of an epoch…

There let us rest."

I hope to have it printed before the end of the year and will try to make it available for others outside the immediate family at cost, possibly available to order off the internet. This is not for profit. It has been a journey of discovery and I have added some old pictures and other family information found on the internet. I you are interested I can be reached at blhorn262@comcast.net.

Brian L. Horn
Eliza is my father-in-law's gradnmother, through her first marriage, the Cozines.

I am very distressed to hear that I may still be confused on Eliza. {grumble}{grumble}

I have many times benefitted by interracting with Marietta Stokes from Adams County Washington. She is wonderfully helpful.

I see the cousin "Becky", but that is still on a census where the other Beckey or Rebecca is listed. I am not entirely unconvinced that Eliza = Beckey = Rebecca. Can you provide more on Rebeccas's marriage and subsequent widowhood?

Sadly, the check in at the Missouri poor house lists only Cyntha's "child". Only Eliza's kids are listed by name. {grumble again} The date on this visit, where Eliza and Cyntha are named "Thurman", is late August 1895.

There is one odd piece of evidence that someone thinks Eliza's parents are Chade Deaton and Virginia Walker. I don't know the source of ef this relationship.

Eliza and Cyntha are my grandfather's aunts . His mother was Sarah Deaton who first married Arthur Cornett then Joseph Reynolds. I have been having a problem with the Louisa/Eliza name too. Louisa had an older sister named Elizabeth who was born around 1847. She is in the 1860 Rockcastle CO KY census. Rebecca and Eliza are different people. Rebecca married Thomas Arnold in 1880 and they were still married when he died in the 1920's. Eliza seems to have been married at least four times. There is also a cousin named "Becky". The whole Deaton family seems to have moved west in the mid to late 1800's

I thank you for the information. I have only been able to place Eliza and Cyntha in berryville Arkansas in 1900. Then someone from Washington state sent me death information and a picture of Eliza's grave. according to the census record Cyntha was the mother of one child and a widow in 1900 census and I know she died in 1901, I was wondering if you have any information about her child? Again thanks for the information.

I do not believe that Eliza (Elizabeth Francis) and Louisa are the same person. Both are listed on the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Eliza is Beckey or Rebecca, but not Louisa.

Eliza and her sister Cyntha travelled together at least to Arkansas (marrying the Thurman brothers) and to Missouri (checking into a poor house), but I see no evidence that Louisa made this trip.

In any case, good to have you on the same team. Why are you interested in these folks?

Hi Philpott,
It depends upon the church's policy. I'd Google Methodist Episcopal Church and see if I could find their policy.

If there is/was no policy for those years, I'd contact Eastern REgional Branch of the Washington State Archives, www.secstate.wa.gov/archives/archives_eastern.aspx, Email era@secstate.wa.gov or 509-235-7500.

There is an Adams County Historical Society, www.adamscountyhistoricalsociety.com or email info@adamscountyhistoricalsociety.com .
Hi Tjadena,
I've looked through the lists of Adams Co. Cemeteries on USGenWeb and WAGenWeb and didn't find Spanjer listed. However, that just means it's not on those two lists.

You can send a email to the Adams County Historical Society, info@adamscountyhistoricalsociety.com and ask them. Hopefully they'll know if it was an old cemetery that got a new name; an old cemetery that was closed and where the interred were moved to; didn't exist in Adams Co, etc.

Trying to find information about the Eliza F Marshall who was listed in the 1910 adams co census with her husband Ezra and several children. Eliza was born in 1861 in KY. One World Tree has her as Louisa Deaton daughter of William and Martha of Rockcastle co ky. I was hoping someone could confirm this. Louisa was maried four times: Cozine, Thurman, Bedingfield, and Marshall.

The first step in posting or identifying a person that you seek is to FULLY identify the person that you have interest. There were probably MANY Neal/Neil (even Kneel, a friend) that could match your criteria. You may have the below, I did not and needed it for verification process.

The 1900 Census for Martinsburg, Pike County, Illinois
Katy, Sullivan, head, born June 1859 in illinois to both parents born in Ireland, a Widow, mother of 7 all living
Mary E, born April 1880
Charles L, Oct 1885
John H, Nov 1882
George E, Aug 1887
William T, may 1891
Warren T, Aug 1892
Neil D, March 1898
--All Children born in Illinois.

The World War I Draft Registration Card Image database.
"Neal David Sullivan" (as written), living at Washtucna, WA, age 19, born March 10, 1899 (In the years I've been doing genealogy, I seem to find the DOB is off by 1 year in about 50 percent of the draft cards. Why? I have only speculation [not valid in genealogy research] ). He was involved in farming for himself. His nearest relative was his brother George Sullivan at the same address. Neal was medium in height, slender in build. He signed his draft registration on Sept 12, 1918 at the local board for Adams County, in Ritzville.

The Social Security Death Index shows a Neal Sullivan, born 10 March 1898, died June 1969 "last residence" in Spokane, WA. His Social Security Number 477-03-7836 was issued in Minnesota. You can order the image of the application (SS-5) for this person's SSN from the Social Security Administration (SSA). It would show many identifiers, to include the name, date of birth, place of birth, parents name, employment (if applicable), etc. An exact image is $27.00, just a computer extract is $18.00. This would verify if this is the correct person. If he was married at that time, it would identify a spouse.
--The "Last Residence" is NOT always where a person was living when died, but where a final payment, usually the "death benefit" was sent; or, where someone identified this person had died (funeral home, etc). So, you run the risk that someone that was living in Adams County, may have died in a hospital in Spokane and the funeral company involved had sent in the address. The "last residence" IS NOT a trustworthy notation.

The child in the 1930 census was probably not "Gone", could be "Gome".

Your FIRST task would be to contact the Washington State Library to request an obituary on Neal as identified, via: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx
Mary was looking for the parents of William. Since her posting was dated 11 August 2005, she found later information, dated October 6, 2005.
"AI have William Carlston Graham born 6 Apr 1887 on Brooklyn, New York died 20 July 1958 Spokane, WA. Family notes say his parents are Richard and Caroline Stevens both born New York. I am having a hard time finding anything on the parents---supposedly they died when he was about 9 and he struck out on his own at 12. Can anyone help with this "brick wall"?
Other postings indicate she has knowledge of genealogy research and had all the other information identified.
Hi Ann,
I hope you get this email and can email me back. I just, by luck, came across your email re: Scheel,Kiehn,Gugler in Ritzville, Wa.
You seem very knowledgeable with some of the families in Ritzville. I have been searching for ever, with not much luck for a family who used to live there and many are buried in the cemetery just outside of town but I'd like to contact a living person. Maybe you can direct me. The family name is LEMMAN. There were two brothers, Edgar and Eugene Lemman (at the Ritzville Cemetery they had the names spelled Lemmon but I think it has been corrected.) They are relatives of mine but I have not found how to contact any living Lemman's who might have moved away but come back to the family plott or maybe just to visit old friends. Is this something you might be able to help me with?
Thank you. Laura

Re: Wesley C. Walsh & wife Viola Walsh of Hatton - 1904 Homesteaders

Thanks for the follow up. I have mined the Adams County records pretty thoroughly over the past 15 years, including the courthouse holdings, Eastern Washington state archives, Lind's historical society (in the basement of the old theater). Ritzville's library and also been in contact in the past with some of the locals, including historians and genealogists. I've never come across any other records for Wesley Walsh but he also was not my primary focus until recently, taking this approach to hopefully find out more about my Great-grandfather, Charles Marshall, Wesley's neighboring homesteader and business partner for a brief time. I need to revisit the land sale records at the courthouse to see what they might have. I did find his homestead records (online US BLM land patent records).

BTW, an info update: I now know that Viola Sweetser married "George" Walsh on August 15, 1898 at Prescott, WA. Viola Sweetser Walsh died 11 AUG 1922 in St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla, a resident of Prescott and was a local school teacher. Her son Verner Walsh died 19 May 1907 (he died as a small child, barely 4 years). Viola was divorced from her husband, George Walsh, who then died in a logging accident near Leavenworth, Washington in 1904 (his death is now narrowed down to at least the year). Considering that Viola had Verner in 1902, it seems this divorce must have taken place between then (probably in Walla Walla County) and 1904 when he died. To be safe, let's say they divorced between 1900 when oldest son Charles was born and 1904 when George was killed in that logging accident. The strange thing about this though is that Viola's only daughter, Josephine, was supposedly born in 1904 or 1905.

As you can see, it's all quite a strange series of events, quite a mystery. I gladly welcome any and all hunches you might have to offer. The fact that Viola, as it now appears, divorced Wesley before he left the Prescott (and/or maybe Hatton) area to work in the timber industry around Leavenworth where he died in 1904, adds a little more detail (I unfortunately don't have an exact death date or place or burial).

Have you seen the obituary in The Ritzville Times, Thursday, December 17, 1908, issue for Mr. Zent? I could not find him in the Ritzville Cemetery. Maybe he was taken to Walla Walla for burial as it appears that the obit was a reprint from the Walla Walla paper.

Daniel J. Zent, who three months ago moved from Walla Walla to Pasco to make his home, is dead, after several weeks' illness, death following a stroke of paralysis. During his residence here he was engaged in the real estate and insurance business, and continued it in Pasco. He was born in Buffalo, N.Y., May 8, 1839, and served in the Civil war. He lived in Kansas, Colorado, Oregon and Washington since the war. He is survived by his wife and 10 children, as follows: F. P. Zent, Everett; Mrs. F. F. O'Leary, Oak Harbor; E. W. Zent, Gooding, Idaho; Judge W. W. Zent, Ritzville; Mrs. James Kerr, Midway, B. C.; Mrs. E. T. Dell, Kivna; George W. Zent, Kate Zent, Pasco; D. E. Zent, Spokane and Mrs. T. R. Wood, Seattle. -Walla Waal Bulletin

I have been out of the genealogy loop lately. It's been a while since I replied to you. Contact me directly and I'll see if I can help you. I think you might be able to help me as well. I just noticed your comment about the Lemman's. There has been a discussion about the spelling of their name.

tloapo@centurytel.net

William Shoop, MA's father was born in October. The one in Lebanon, KS is a different William Shoop. Mary Ann (Molly) died in 1901. I have not been able to locate her burial. One website had her at Cunningham Cemetary, but I did not find her in the listings (it appeared it was only a partial listing). William died in 1901 also. I have not found his burial site. We wonder if they were buried on the farm and the graves are not recorded or long gone.

William Shoop, b. 1836, OH appears on the 1880 Clifton, Wilson Co, KS Census along with his children, two nephews and a neice. His daughter Mary A. Shoop was born abt. 1866, KS.

A William Shoop b. 12 June 1836, Erie Co., OH died 23 Sep 1905 in Lebannon, Smith Co., KS but I can't verify if this is the same William. However, I didn't find anything about William's death in Adams Co. I checked the obvious cemeteries at www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/wa/adams/adams.htm but not all of them.

Another place to check is the Adams County Court House in Ritzville to see if they have a death cert.

I found a M. A. McClure married to Edward in the 1889 Washington Census. M. A. was female, 22 and born in KS. They were living with Edward's family in Whitman Co., WA.

The 1900 Hatton, Adams Co Census shows Edward F. McClure, b. Aug. 1867, OR, farmer and married 10 yrs. Mary A., wife, b. April 1867, KS, had given birth to 5 children & 5 alive in 1900. All children born in WA. Mable E. b. Feb. 1890, Charles W. b. Aug. 1891; Ralph b. July 1893 John b. April 1895 and Robert b. Dec. 1888.

Mary McClure doesn't appear in the Censuses after 1900. I checked the obvious cemeteries at the rootsweb site mentioned above and she's not there either. However I didn't look at all of them and all of them aren't indexed. Neither she nor her father are in Cunningham.

In 1910 Garfield, Whitman Co., WA Census Edward appears with his family. He has remarried to Lucy T., 41 yrs old. Same list of children.

A Edward F. McClure died 29 June 1942 in Spokane City. He was born abt. 1868 per death cert #853. Source: WA Death Index 1940-1996.

Check with the Heritage Research Center, POBox 293, Ritzville, WA 99169. 509-659-0237

Also there is an Adams County Historical Society with a very new web site www.adamscountyhistoricalsociety.com.

Hi Joan, that's possible but check with the Heritage Research Center and Adams County Historical Society see previous post). Our local genealogy society keeps track of any individual graves in Chelan and Douglas County that we hear about because of these reasons. They might have that info.

Are you sure William was in WA state? I didn't find him in any Census but I relied on the indexes and if Shoop wasn't indexed correctly, I wouldn't find it.

Re: RailRoad/Wm. C. Graham

I found a William G. Graham on the Census in 1910 in Precinct 66, Whitman Co., WA. He was b. abt. 1887, NY, [as were both parents} and he was a fireman for the railroad.

I know the initial doesn't match but I think he's your Graham because of the age, where he was born and working for the railroad. I didn't find him earlier than that.

Then a William Carlston Graham filled out his World War I Draft Registration Card 6/5/1917. He was living in Othello, Adams Co. He was born in Brooklyn, NY 6 April 1887. He was a locomotive engineer for Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul R. R. He was married with two children. He was medium height & slender with blue eyes and brown hair.

A Willard C. Graham (although ancestry indexed it as Wilford but looks like Willard to me) both abt. 1888, NY (and both his parents) and family appears in the 1920 Othello, Adams Co. Census. He was a "engineer locomotive". He was married to Helma J., b. WA, 27 yrs old. Dau. Jeane E., b. OR abt. 1912. Son Willard C Jr., b. WA, 4 1/2th and son Harry E., b. WA 1 5/12ths. Lodgers Arthur J. Williams, locomotive engineer and Christina MacLeod, bank clerk, were also living with them.

A William C. Graham and his family appear in the 1930 Spokane, Spokane Co., WA Census. William was b. NY, abt. 1888 & he's an "engineer locomotive". He was married at 26. His wife Anna E. [yes, note diffferent name] was born ND, 38 yrs old and first married at 36. W. Carlston was born WA abt. 1916 and Harry E. was born WA abt. 1919. Lillian G. Gusk, sister, single, born ND, 36 yrs old, saleswoman was living with them.

I'd look for his divorce record in Adams or Spokane Co. Contact Adams Co. Clerk, 509-659-3257, PO Box 187, Ritzville, WA 99169 or Spokane Co. Clerk, W 116 Broadway, Rm 300, Spokane, 99260-0090, 509-477-2211.

Another source might be Eastern Regional Archive Branch, www.secstate.wa.gov/archives/archives_eastern.aspx, era@secstate.wa.gov, 509-235-7500.

Also I'd look in Spokane for his marriage record to Anna since she married when she was 36 and she was 38 in 1930.

The last viewable Census to the public at this time is 1930 and after then people aren't easy to tract. Since he lived in Spokane in 1930 you might want to find the Spokane City Directories starting with 1931. City directories were issued every year or you might find Spokane City combined with Spokane county. You can do a Google search or the Spokane Gen. Soc. or main public library might have them.

Eastern WA Gen. Soc., (Spokane), www.rootsweb.com/~waewgs. Most Gen. Soc's will do research on people for an hourly fee.

I don't know what kind of historical info you might be able to get from the Railroad itself. Look at www.rrb.gov/mep/genealogy.asp.

I don't know how to research the early adoption in Brooklyn. I'd post that on the rootsweb.com, databases, usa, new york state, brooklyn county. Or look up rootsweb and find the Brooklyn Gen. Soc. All of the local Gen. Soc's are a wealth of information that seem to get overlooked. Good Luck!

I did find a William Graham, 538-18-3094, whose last residence was Silverdale, Kitsap Co., WA, born 24 April 1887. He died Dec 1974. His soc. sec. # was assigned in WA before 1951. Source: SSDI

I know the birth date doesn't exactly match but it IS close. I'd send an email to askalibrarian@secstate.wa.gov and ask for his obituary. Provide his name, where (I'd tell them Silverdale) and when he died. They will search the newspaper microfilm for one hour for free and reply with what they find.

If that doesn't work, you can send to Soc. Sec. for a copy of his social sec. application which costs about $20.
