Thanks Spinny38, I really do appreciate it. I have hit a real brick wall with my research about her and it's so frustrating! If you would be interested in adding the Probate file of Sampson Farnsworth to your research/family file just let me know. I'd be happy to send you the link to download it. I also have a couple picture of Caroline that I'd be glad to share.Feel free to just email me at the address below.

Thanks again.
Gina Antonelli
ginaantonelli00@gmail.com

Thanks for your quick response. One of my sisters is responsible for 95% of our research and I forwarded the message to her today. I will ask her to get in touch with you because she can tell you much more, and more accurately than I can. Tomorrow I am going to the LDS Family History Center at the big temple here in Los Angeles and hopefully can find a clue or two there.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I know she had a sister, Jane, who moved to Washington State as well. And Jane lived and was buried in Sunnyside. What I can't figure out is what happened to Caroline? There is no record of death or burial but she just disappears completely between 1893-1900. I received the Probate record of Sampson Farnsworth from 1884. After his death the guardianship of Caroline and his children (Clarence, Clarice, Sampson, and Ella) was given to John Holden who Caroline later married. It's very mysterious. Kind of feels like it was an arranged marriage. Carolina and John Holden had three children, the last indication that she was present was the birth of her last child in 1892ish. None of them are listed in the 1900 census; Caroline, John, or children. The only one who shows up in the census records from 1900 was Sarah Etta Holden, living in Chelan Co. and listed as an orphan.
That is interesting about Jana Monk possibly not being their biological mother. The entire family is a total mystery! Maybe genetically mysterious? Do you have any family stories about them? No one in my family seems to have documented anything making my search really frustrating.

Thanks again!

Caroline Elizabeth Hartway Farnsworth Holden was my great aunt. She had 3 siblings -- Jane, Folkert and Frank. Our grandfather was Folkert Hartway, who was born in 1860 or 1861. Presumably all the children were born in Missouri although we have not been able to verify that. Their mother was Jana Monk but since she appears never to have used the name Hartway, she may not have been their biological mother.

Thanks for the offlist interchange.
You may have all of the below: I did a LONG number of different searches, mostly in Washington, but also in ID, OR, etc. The thing that bothers me is the lack of finding any of them in the 1900 Census, John Holden, Ira, anyone. I looked for any names beginning with ?olden, ?ald.. ?eld... etc. Any combinations...no success.
There was the Etta, Orphan, found in Chelan County, which could be the correct one or a coincidence. "IF" the land patent for a John Holden in Adams county is the correct person, they lived in the "backwoods." BUT, they may have never lived on the property. You've got the problem of back woods, newspaper may or may not be found, an obit problem, location of cemetery... I would suggest attempt at court records (divorce, probate, for both John and Caroline, in Adams and Chelan...but no sure thing there either as far as even the locations). VERY difficult case this one.

The 1891-1907 WA Death Listing shows 26 deaths in Adams Co, none matching any of the family criteria.
Adams County Birth Returns 1894-1907, 1910-1915, no records (But appears all births were prior to record period). Adams County created in 1883 out of Whitman County. No Holden births in Whitman.

From the book:
The Past and present of Woodford County, Illinois : containing a history of the county, its cities, towns, &c., a directory of its tax-payers, war record of its volunteers in the late rebellion, portraits of early settlers and prominent men, general and local statistics, map of Woodford County, history of Illinois illustrated, history of the Northwest illustrated, Constitution of the United States, miscellaneous matters, &c., &c.
Chicago: W. April 5, 1810; married Emeline Quackenbush, about 1834; she died Nov. 22, 1876; have seven children living -- Esther, born July 10, 1839; George A., born Nov. 3, 1840; Ann E., born March 16, 1842; Elijah M., born May 10, 1844; Charlotte E., born Nov 25, 1846; Chauncey Lafayette, born April 11, 1849; Oliver C., born Feb 11, 1866. George served three years in the 77th I.V.I; was in quite a number of battles, and was also a prisoner at Andersonville about six months.
--(So, first wife Emeline died 1876, book written 1878, by 1880 was married to Caroline with two children age of two). I didn't look to see were Sampson died, or where Caroline married him...or Holden. Seems within two years of Emeline's death, Caroline and Sampson married, then she is in Washington State, so that period could give clues. Offlist you gave the scenario of Holden being an opportunist with finding a rich widow, but maybe she was the opportunist...

-------------Ira Holden-----------
Ira Oliver Holden, 17 June 1890, born in Washtucna
Marriage Records 5 December 1949 at Colfax, Whitman County:
Ira Holden, born June 17, 1885, of Stevens County, marriage to Josephine Hammer of Stevens County, born Dec 16, 1899. Dividing it into quarters, his land would be in the top left quarter section, the left half of that quarter section. A section contains 640 acres and is one mile in size. Zoom out one block (top left corner of the map), you'll see a "500". The "500" is in the 29, to the right of Section 30. Zooming out more more block, you'll see the "500", the "Landing Strip", the town of Benge, and Green Lake. Zooming out one additional block, you'll see the Green Lake, and to the bottom the county line with Whitman County and the town of Washtucna (Where Ira was born). So, this farm was north of Washtucna, just off route 251, then along the S. Benge-Washtucna Road (You can see that road using the http://classic.mapquest.com maps).
--This area is remote. At that time, families had family cemeteries on their land; however, there is no way to proof she is on that land...except for finding the cemetery, etc.
--There is a way to obtain a copy of the application for the land patent. I know it works for Homestead Act patents, but this is a purchase patent. The application does give information about the person.

I do NOT normally refer to Historical Societies; however, you might wish that information for the Adams County group:
http://www.adamscountyhistoricalsociety.com/

I checked cemetery listings.

The following identifies obit locations of John Holden in 1910, but you have already obtained at least one: http://www.wags-web.org/obits/h.htm

Still lacking proof of Caroline's death. There is two potentials, she died, she went elsewhere. After the questionable marriage to Farnsworth, then out to Washington, then disappears, did she leave, die, or... murdered?

Ron Bestrom

Unlike the first poster, I'm NOT sure that she died before 1907...there is NO PROOF she died... Assuming in genealogy is just WRONG. I have disproven this person's assumptions dozens of times over the past couple of years...
MANY persons were identified as widows/widowers in the early census, when in fact the other spouse had run off/ divorced / separated. The stigma of such was a big factor back them. Today, like in other social factors, I hope we've matured a bit.

My own questions/with found answers...to some.

You identify Caroline was your G/G/G/Grandmother, born IL about 1854. She married John Holden in 10/1884 (Place unidentified) just after your G/G/G Grandfather Sampson Farnsworth died. Was Farnsworth a husband of Caroline? If so, what was Caroline's maiden name? If not, who the heck was he and what/where were this family?
--The 1880 Census of Cazenovia, Woodford County, IL
Sampson Farnsworth, age 70(1809/1810), born in Vermont
Caroline, wife, age 26(1855/1856), born in Illinois
Clarence, 2, born in IL, son
Clarissa, 2, born in IL, dau (Twins?)
---The 1900 US Census of Harvey, Stevens County, WA
Clarence Farnsworth, born July(?) 1877 in Illinois to father born in Germany(Sampson born in Vermont [but census often wrong] and mother born in Illinois), married one year to Cora, born in WA, appearing to be the dau of John and "Mayyie"(?) Fisk.
---The 2 June 1892 Wedding between John E. Gull and "Clarice" N Farnsworth... IF Clarissa in the 1880 census was the same person, she would be about 10...IF the 1880 Census was correct. Appears born in 1877.
... A posted family tree identified John Edward Gull born 17 Dec 1861 in Kansas, Illinois, married Clarice Nellie Farnsworth born 1877 in Peoria, Illinois, daughter of Sampson George Farnsworth, 1827 to 1887 in Waitsburg, Walla Walla County; and Caroline Elizabeth Hartway 1857 to 1910 (Location or information not shown). The owner of this tree: Jlstraw, Michigan. I sent a message to this person to review this thread and provide info if known. They had three children, Oliver Gull 1895-1958; Chester Gull 1902-1983; Vera Lorraine Gull 1908-1931.

I checked the Illinois Marriage Index and did not see a marriage between a Holden or Farnsworth matching criteria.

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
issued under the Homestead Act and other Congressional land acts.
It shows a John Holden (NO proof of being the correct person) obtained 160 acres of land in Adams county on 5/1/1891 in Adams County, located at Township 16 North, Range 37 East, in Section 30.

A John Holden (NO proof of being the correct person) had obtained 160 acres of land in Walla Walla County on 6/20/1884.
--The 1880 Census of WW, does show a John Holden, born about 1848 in Ohio, chopping wood.
--The WA Digital Archives show an image of marriage return between a John Holden of Walla Walla Co, WT(WA Territory) and Carrie E. Farnsworth of WW, WW Co, WT on 13 Oct 1884. Witnesses Mifses (Mrs?) Sadie Strong and Emma Dickinson. (Is this the marriage of which you speak?)

Probably:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ho...;

A John E. Holden (No proof..._) obtained land on 5/23/1906 in Douglas County, Township 25 North, Range 25East, Section 6.

At this point, I do not see a verifiable death of Carrie/Caroline. If she was born in 1854 and last seen about 1899, she was 45. Yes, young enough to have died, but young enough to have gone elsewhere. A runaway? Back then also was the stigma of mental illness, suicide. If this be the case, a suicide would have gone unreported by name (even today), a mental illness resulting in "hospitalization" (back then MANY had "mental illness" but were incarcerated without medical proof). Even today, Washington State law prevents identification of any information identifying a person was a patient in a mental facility (however, there are ways around such overt identification).

More research is needed on the records surrounding John Holden, City/State Directories (Polks), newspaper articles, land ownership records, etc. The period of Walla Walla to Ritzville, (proving/disproving the Douglas County land records) and the Leavenworth period might identify some information. A woman married to a man 44 years older in 1880, then "disappearing" by 1890, seems to be an interesting mystery (But then, I'm probably talking from my criminal investigator career than reality). (But, I'll be glad to take any educated side opposite the first poster).

Hi Joy,

It's a good point and is possible. It is difficult to be sure of an exact date of her death. It was not uncommon for girls to marry very young either. I went back and checked for any of my Farnsworth's in the 1900 census and they all seemed to have been absent from class that day. It's difficult to tell without a 1890 census or 1900 census to refer to. Earliest and only document I was able to find to kind of prove her demise was the listing of her youngest children as orphans in the 1900 census. Etta Holden, who was born in June 1891, is listed as such.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for your response. I was aware that death certificates were not the norm until 1907, but was in hopes of finding some little piece of info from another user who happened upon something. I found a publication that stated Adams county actually had some death records as far back as 1891 and my hope was that Caroline may be one of them. But after I did some checking with Adams county it came up empty. I even checked with the Washington State Eastern regional Archive and came up with nothing as well. Thanks for your response and help.

Hi Stella,

A death certificate wasn't required on a state-wide basis until 1907. I'm sure she died earlier than that.

A lot of counties kept death records prior to that date. I'd contact the Adams County Auditor's Office, wei.secstate.wa.gov/adams/Pages/abouttheauditorsoffice.aspx .
They don't mention old death records but they are the recording place for county records. Successful Searching!

Otto Manford:
Otto's father Louis was section foreman at Lind, WA. on the Northern Pacific Rail Road until 1949 at which time he bid on the position of Section Foreman at Pasco, WA. There he remained until the mid. 60s when he bid in the Section foreman position at Spokane, WA where he remained until his retirement. His son Fonzie was Section Foreman at Parkwater Yrds., Spokane in the mid 60s I don't remember when he retired. Then there was Pete Manfred who was section Foreman at Sand Point, ID. in the mid 60s. Pete had lost his family in a house fire at an earlier time. I didn't know the Manfreds that well but they were all good to me. All worked on the old Northern Pacific R.R.
Tom

I am searching for my gr gr gr grandmother Caroline Holden who was born in Illinois abt 1854. The last bit of information I was able to find was in the Adams Co 1889 Washington Territory Census taken July 1, 1889. She then seems to have disappeared completely. Some of her younger children were later considered orphans in the 1900 census. She married John Holden in October of 1884 shortly after my gr gr gr Grandfather Sampson Farnsworth died. I have been able to find information about John Holden including an obit for him from 1910 where it briefly stated that his wife Caroline had passed away many years before. I have searched available online listings from cemeteries within the Adams County and surrounding area without success. There was no death certificate issued that I have been able to find and no obit, which leads me to believe she may have passed away between 1897 thru early 1900 before records were required. I believe she lived in or near Ritzville until her death. Any information would be greatly appreciate.

Ron,
Thank you for your detailed instructions. I am new to Land record searches and am excited to follow this trail. I have tried to find William B. Bloomer in US Census records but have not had much luck nailing down which William Bloomer he is before and including 1860. There seem to be several by that name. To add to the challenge there are also Benton Bloomers in the mix about his same birth year give or take a few. Without parents and siblings names I don’t know which if any are him.
I do know he was believed to have worked on the Erie canal in New York. He was also known as Captain Bloomer according to family legend. I do not know when he did that though or if that leads to records.
He was declared dead by mistake before the courts by his wife Nancy (Palmer) Bloomer in Lenawee Co., Michigan after she was shown a death notice of a William Bloomer, (a black man) who had died. She later married a Martindale fellow, only to have William show up very alive later on. Family legend tells of stolen money sent home to his wife and lost letters also sent home but not received. He is gone from his wife and family in 1860. I do not know if he served in the Civil War but think he went west for the gold rush instead as stated in family legend.
What I do not know is who his parents and siblings are for sure and how to track him before 1860 when he left for the west.
I have:
New York County, Letters of Administration Index, 1743-1875 (Barber Collection)
about Nancy
Name of Intestate: Nancy
Administration Date: 29 Nov 1824 (Date letters of administration was granted and recorded)
Administrator's Name: Wm Bloomer
Source Information:
Ancestry.com.
CJ,
I see this is your first posting on the Rootsweb system, at least using this user name. Your posting did contain William's full date of birth, a very important fact needed for research. It also was his obituary and identified a daughter's name. Your profile identifies you've been researching since 1973. It is very helpful for volunteers to know what you've already researched concerning your person of interest. If you have already obtained US Census documentation, WA State Digital Archive information, facts identifying the name of his wife and her information, posting that you have this prevents volunteers from doing that research and posting what you already know.

I will do some research on this person to get the basics.

The 1900 Census of Lind, Adams County, WA
William Bloomer, born August 1834 in New York to both parents born in NY, farmer/owned his land, widower.

---------His land-------------
The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
issued under the Homestead Act and other Congressional Land Acts: to include the April 24, 1820 Sale/Cash Act.

It shows on 12/31/1903, William B. Bloomer obtained 160 acres of land in Adams County at Township 17 North, Range 34 East, Section 32, the NW Quarter of that Section. A Section of land is one mile square, containing 640 acres, a quarter section is 160 acres.

Entering the land location into this site will provide some general information:
http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html
Once you have looked over this, click on the "Switch to TerraServer"

The first window shows an old Aerial photo, you can get a better one at:
http://classic.mapquest.com/
Click on the largest blue box (Top right corner) for Topo (Topographic) Map.
Click on the largest blue box for Size.

This window shows a topo map of red colored squares. They are the Sections. You will see the town of Lind, and highway 395. Towards the bottom, you willsee a red colored "31," this is Section 31. Place your cursor in the middle of the box directly to the east (to the right) and left click on your mouse. In the next window, find that box again and again left click.

You will now see a red colored "32." This is Section 32 where his land was located. The information identified the land was in the NW Quarter. So divide this box into quarters. His land was the top left (NW) quarter of that box.

To obtain this land, he had to apply for it. His application package could tell you a great deal about him.

Here is an example of what "might" be found in a land patent application package. This example is for the Charles Ingalls property (Little House on the Prarie).
http://www.archives.gov/research/land/ingalls/index.html

To obtain a copy of the land patent records issued under the Homestead Act:
First, find your ancestor's land patent information: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...

1. One method is to visit a National Archives Record Center and view/copy the microfilm records. http://www.archives.gov/locations/order.html

2. By Mail:
Click on http://www.archives.gov/forms/pdf/natf-84.pdf and download the NATF Form 84. The BLM Land Patent site will have the needed information for the form.

3. By online method: Click on the above link and follow the instructions to submit your order online. Again, use the BLM site data to complete.

The form also indicates, "If available, please attach one cpy of the original land patent, tract book pages, or Bureau of Land Management GLO listing for this land entry." You could copy the original land patent image from the online site above, as well as the window link I've included above. But, if you attach pages, you would probably have to mail your application.

When the research staff has located your documents, you will be contacted with the information about how many actual pages were found and the cost for reproduction.
-----------------------
Other information about him would be found in New York. I don't know what information you already have on this person, so I didn't do any other research. The Land Patent information might hold more clues, and when he came to Washington State, etc.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Re: Kiehn Family

The Tacoma Library has an online database of obituaries published in the Tacoma News Tribune:
George Kiehn, died 20 April 1949, obit page D-6 on 21 April 1949
Kathryn E. Kiehn, died 22 July 1970, obit page B-13 on 9 August 1970
--You can obtain a copy through the library for a fee, or:
--The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. For an obituary:
http://www.sos.wa.gov/library/ask_form.aspx

The Washington Death Certificate Index:
George Kiehn, died 20 April 1949, son of Henry Kiehn and Anna.
Gordon Kiehn, died 1 Feb 1949, age 35, mother George and Kathryn "Shafer"

A posted family tree shows Cora Evelyn Kiehn, born 22 Jan 1908 in Ritzville. She married Ralph Earnest McKee on 2 Sep 1931 in Spokane. The Tacoma Library database:
Evelyn McKee, died 8 April 1958, obit page 23 8 April 1958. (It is possible the date of death was prior to 8 April, or the obit page information is wrong).
Ralph "C" McKee, died 8 Sep 1942, obit page 21 on 9 Sep 1942 (The middle initial is not the same as the family tree data, it could be the wrong person or wrong initial.

The tree shows Vernon George Kiehn born 27 July 1923, married 19 May 1946 to "living" Lalor. His death was in July 1964. He had two sons "living" and two daughters "living."

I sent a message to the owner of the family tree to read this thread. He is a Schafer, so probably related. He might have more information than posted, and should have on the "living" members. His info should be what you need. He last logged into the system about a week ago, so his finding the message will depend on how soon he logs in again and sees it.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Jack A Baker

I am looking for information on my husband's grandfather. He was know as James (Jack) A. Baker. He lived in Washington state a good part of his life. Was married to Alvera Meise from Benge, Washington in the 30's. They had three children, Bonnie (named after is sister), Dennis and Marilyn. He worked for several farmers in the Benge area and then moved to Wenatchee, Washington for a short time. Moved back to Benge, Washington and supported the family by writing short stories for "True Stories" and "True Romance". His mother lived in Seattle and was remarried to a man with the name of Hanchett (sp?). When Bonnie was 8 years old he went to Seattle to visit his mother and never returned. We have been told that he spent sometime in prison before marrying Alvera Meise. And we were told that Baker was not his birth name that it was possibly Jackson. The family was notified sometime in the 80's that he had died of TB. Any help that could be provided would be great.
From the census page(s), there were a number of prisoners being held by the County Sheriff. While that does not make it an arrest by the County Sheriff, he could have been arrested in the municipality of Ritzville or another town. He might not have been tried and/or convicted. He "could" have had the misfortune of being arrested and held just as the census enumerator was starting to do the jail.

But, if he was being held after conviction, it "probably" would have been a case heard by the Adams County Superior Court. Those archives are at the Eastern Regional Branch of the State Archives:
http://www.sos.wa.gov/archives/archives_eastern.aspx#collect...
See "View a listing of the Eastern Region Collection"
See "Adams County Government"
See "Clerk".
See "Criminal Case Files"
They have 12 Cubic Feet of cases 1889-1980.
The Superior Court Index would be first checked to identify the name of the Defendant, case number and case info.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

I found the county courthouse in Ritzville to be a treasure trove of information about an Adams Co. family I was researching. The library there also has newspapers dating way back. I'd hoped to look at those while there, too, but they were out for microfilming by the state at the time. This was some years ago, so I'd guess the newspapers would be back in the library by now.

Beth

Re: Daniel J. Zent

I have Daniel J. Zent's diary of his family's journey from Colorado to Oregon in a covered wagon in 1877 and the story written by his son Frank P. Zent (11 years old on the trip) some thirty years later from the diary and his memories of the trip.

At the end of the story states:
"... and how we followed it to the Puget Sound; how the family began to grow up and drop away from the parent stat like leaves from the tree with the frosts of autumn; how the magic lure of the “Just Beyond” kept Father and Mother constantly on the move with a constantly decreasing family; and finally how a little band of us, gathered from the wooded hills of Puget Sound and the cities and prairies of the great, golden Inland Empire, one sad day stood watching them lower the remains of the husband, father, and sturdy old pioneer into his last resting place overlooking the beautiful city of Walla Walla, the Land of Promise that held our dreams during that long and weary trail over the great western prairies. But this would be the story of a new life in a new world. With the end of the diary we have reached the end of an epoch…

There let us rest."

I hope to have it printed before the end of the year and will try to make it available for others outside the immediate family at cost, possibly available to order off the internet. This is not for profit. It has been a journey of discovery and I have added some old pictures and other family information found on the internet. I you are interested I can be reached at blhorn262@comcast.net.

Brian L. Horn
Eliza is my father-in-law's gradnmother, through her first marriage, the Cozines.

I am very distressed to hear that I may still be confused on Eliza. {grumble}{grumble}

I have many times benefitted by interracting with Marietta Stokes from Adams County Washington. She is wonderfully helpful.

I see the cousin "Becky", but that is still on a census where the other Beckey or Rebecca is listed. I am not entirely unconvinced that Eliza = Beckey = Rebecca. Can you provide more on Rebeccas's marriage and subsequent widowhood?

Sadly, the check in at the Missouri poor house lists only Cyntha's "child". Only Eliza's kids are listed by name. {grumble again} The date on this visit, where Eliza and Cyntha are named "Thurman", is late August 1895.

There is one odd piece of evidence that someone thinks Eliza's parents are Chade Deaton and Virginia Walker. I don't know the source of ef this relationship.

Eliza and Cyntha are my grandfather's aunts . His mother was Sarah Deaton who first married Arthur Cornett then Joseph Reynolds. I have been having a problem with the Louisa/Eliza name too. Louisa had an older sister named Elizabeth who was born around 1847. She is in the 1860 Rockcastle CO KY census. Rebecca and Eliza are different people. Rebecca married Thomas Arnold in 1880 and they were still married when he died in the 1920's. Eliza seems to have been married at least four times. There is also a cousin named "Becky". The whole Deaton family seems to have moved west in the mid to late 1800's

I thank you for the information. I have only been able to place Eliza and Cyntha in berryville Arkansas in 1900. Then someone from Washington state sent me death information and a picture of Eliza's grave. according to the census record Cyntha was the mother of one child and a widow in 1900 census and I know she died in 1901, I was wondering if you have any information about her child? Again thanks for the information.

I do not believe that Eliza (Elizabeth Francis) and Louisa are the same person. Both are listed on the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Eliza is Beckey or Rebecca, but not Louisa.

Eliza and her sister Cyntha travelled together at least to Arkansas (marrying the Thurman brothers) and to Missouri (checking into a poor house), but I see no evidence that Louisa made this trip.

In any case, good to have you on the same team. Why are you interested in these folks?

Hi Philpott,
It depends upon the church's policy. I'd Google Methodist Episcopal Church and see if I could find their policy.

If there is/was no policy for those years, I'd contact Eastern REgional Branch of the Washington State Archives, www.secstate.wa.gov/archives/archives_eastern.aspx, Email era@secstate.wa.gov or 509-235-7500.

There is an Adams County Historical Society, www.adamscountyhistoricalsociety.com or email info@adamscountyhistoricalsociety.com . Successful Searching!
