>>>>I am looking for more information on the Gibbs from Hyde county as well and further back to the Gibbs family in Europe and also Brinson/Cason names in England (before the 1700s). Starting with my grandfather :

*Melvin Grey Gibbs (1935-2010)NC - (Married Mary Chambers)

->Floyd Earl Gibbs (1906-1981)NC - (Married Reggie Louise Bowden)

-Warren Walter Gibbs (1871-1940)Lake Landing NC -

-Milton Selby Gibbs (1834-1904)NC - (Married Mary Dorcas Spencer?)

-Carney Gibbs (1795-1872)Hyde NC -(Married Polly Affa Spencer?)

>>>*After this is where I become unsure. Listed as the father of Carney Gibbs I have :

***Cason Gibbs Jr. (1773-Unknown)Hyde NC - (Married to Unknown)

***Cason Gibbs Sr. (1749-1826?)Hyde NC - (Married to Dinah Bartee?*Had multiple wives possibly 3? Dinah was the first wife I believe so I have seen it listed that Cason Jr was her son)

***Joseph Gibbs Sr (1720?-1794)Hyde NC - (Married to Mary Brinson *link to Brinson and Cason names in England? Need more information on Mary Brinson (daug of Cason Grey Brinson and Frances Marsh?) Any record that she married Joseph or anymore info would be great. This seems to be my link to the Brinson/Cason family in England which I have possibly followed back to John Cason *Hertfordshire 1560 and Richard Cason *Hertforshire 1490**See Bottom of post**)

***Henry Gibbs (1693-1763?)Hyde NC? - (Married to Ann/Jane Spencer?Speculation only have not found much information)

***Henry John Gibbs (1675-?) England (Died in Virginia?) - (Married to Mary? Last name unknown)

***Thomas Gibbs? I have been searching on the UK's ancestry site with not much luck since I don't really know what area to search.
I have seen the copy of "The Poquoson Watermen" in the Hampton library several months ago. It still does not indicate who the father of my 1810 William Watkins of Poquoson (York County), Virginia is. He was married to Eliza Linton; she was born in Somerset County, MD then her family moved to Mathews, VA. I have also seen Arlis Herrings site as well as the Miles files. The Miles files list Thomas Aduston Watkins as the father of 1810 William Watkins, but I am still attempting to document that.
My brother did DNA testing and at this point, we don't have any matches with anyone else who has tested as part of the Watkins DNA project.

Yep Cocke and also Hallom is the connection in Henrico Co -- neighbors to the Baileys there as proved in several land patents in C&P. Also the Price family because Ann Hallom was Ann Price first. John Price Jr had land in the same area of Henrico Co...all very interesting. I'll see what I can get together and post on both Henrico Co & Bailey message boards.

Thank you so Much for your information. Peter Cocke Bailey's Revolutionary Pension file mentions two grandfathers, Abraham, of Jamestown, Henrico County, Birth unknown to us, and William of Warwick County. So if the only land patent is William Bayly in 1687 that could be him. Temperance Bailey married, married Richard Cocke in 1633 in Henrico. Abraham Bailey of Henrico married Temperance Cocke, who was Temperance Bailey's grt GRt Grandaughter. It is believed tha Arthur is the father of Temperance, but I have not found doumentation to prove it, maybe you have. Interestingly enuough we also have a DNA match to Thomas Bailey of Henrico, long thought to be connected to Callum Bailey's Group, but now is linked to our DNA. I believe he is a brother to Abraham b. Henrico 1694, whose father is Abraham. I think your information should be posted on both, but especially on the Bailey message board.

Okay I went through all 3 volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers as well as some other books I have -- Original Persons of Quality, VA Immigrants & Adventurers, Complete Book of Emigrants, etc

The ONLY reference I can find for a Bailey in Warwick County, VA is the following land patent from Cavaliers & Pioneers V2 on page 317 of the book:

On 21 October 1687, Richard Hill & William Bayly received a patent for 264 acres of land in Warwick County. Near the head of the Black Swamp, adjacent to Captain Martin & Mr. Robert Read & Mr. Thomas Cheesman. They received this patent in return for paying for the transport of the following people: Jonathan Meade, Susan Meade, Mary Meade, Paul Meade, Thomas Sykes & Edmund Bellison...Virginia Land Patent Book 7, Page 622

There IS mention of an Abraham Bailey several times in the volumes. But he is associated with Henrico County, VA NOT Warwick County, VA. Perhaps there was a connection between the 2 families but I haven't found it. The Bailey family had land in Henrico Co, VA all the way back to 1620 or before. I think there may have been a family connection between Temperance Bailey and a merchant named Arthur Bailey. Land records indicate there probably was. An Arthur Bailey who was a contemporary of the merchant Arthur Bailey of Henrico County is listed in several places in the Complete Book of Emigrants. He was in the business of shipping goods from England to Virginia. I'm pretty sure they are the same person. The coincidence is a little too much but I guess there may have been 2 merchants in Virginia at the same time named Arthur Bailey -- one in Henrico County and one elsewhere -- like Jamestown. But I have my doubts. If HE was related to your family -- you might find quite a bit on him. There were a lot of land patents in Henrico County for Baileys but that would be off topic here. Let me know if you would rather I post THAT info on either the Message Board for Henrico County or the Bailey surname. I hope this is helpful to you.

Oh okay, I thought you meant that Abraham Bailey was the grandfather of William. Sorry for the confusion. I think the second supply was like in 1608. I took some of my genealogy books and sat up in bed looking for info in them on William Bailey (or any other spellings I could find in indexes). I looked in VA Immigrants and Adventurers, Cavaliers and Pioneers -- all 3 vols, Complete Book of Emigrants and Original Persons of Quality. I'm at work but I'll post what I found later when I get home. If I forget please just post a message here and I'll get the reminder on my home page at Ancestry. We might have Bailey in our lines as well from Kent Island, Maryland. VA and MD disputed over that island initially -- even had a little mini war about it.

William Bailey, or Bayly as you stated came over on the second ship of the Virginsi Company, I believe, if not second, the third. This line is related by DNA, probably a brother to my original patriarch, thanks for the help. You are so right about those Bailey's very common with many variations in spellings. Usually in clusters of three, not related. Doing this just to confuse the H out of us, in later years. LOL
Jeanette Bailey in MO

Have you checked the information on the Baileys, etc in Cavaliers and Pioneers -- Virginia Land Patents, Vols 1-3. The indexes of all 3 volumes are chock full of Baileys, Bayleys, etc. I did a quick skim in Vol I. I don't find any Abraham at all. William Bayly was one of the oldest settlers but he didn't live in Warwick County. At one time Warwick County was part of Elizabeth City or Kiccoughtan as they used to call that area. Several early land patents for Elizabeth City or Kiccoughtan were for land that was later in what was once called Warwick County. So you might consider expanding your search for any Baileys associated with Elizabeth City County, Virginia as well. Elizabeth City County Wills & Administrations might be a good book to check that out. The biggest problem I find with names like Bailey is that it's such a common name, there were tons of them and not all related -- even if they lived in the same neighborhood. My ancestors were Chandlers from Elizabeth City County, VA and we have the same problem. Oh well -- at least I'm not a Smith or Jones! lol

Watkins of Warwick County (1800's)

I am seeking information on the Watkins family of Warick County/Poquoson/York County, Virginia.
My grandfather was George Waverly Watkins and his father was Jeremiah Watkins of Poquoson, VA (Jeremiah's wife was Martha C. Moore). My grandfather's brother was Arthur Watkins who was a fantastic stone mason (many of his tomb stones in the Tabernacle Church Cemetary, Poquoson, Virginia are truly beautiful to behold!.
Jeremiah's father was William Watkins, born in 1809 or 1810 who was married to Eliza Linton. I am presently seeking information on Thomas Aduston Watkins and also, Henry Watkins of Warwick County who was married to Sarah Patrick. Sarah was married to John Freeman prior to her marriage to Henry. Henry and Sarah were married on 22 Feb 1785 in York County, VA. I believe my Watkins family may have been in Virginia possibly as early as 1632(Thomas Watkins?) but I still have sketchy information on my early Virginian Watkins family that I am attempting to source.
I also am seeking information on James Watkins (of interest because he was also a Watkins) who in 1608 went on the Discovery Mission with John Smith. John Smith's diary mentions James Watkins (soldier) and Anas Todkill. There is also an interesting account of James Watkins and his encounter with an Indian, also in John Smith's diary. John Smith named "Watkins Pointe" after James Watkins. One thing is certain: the following names were prevelant throughout my Watkins line: James, Thomas, William (there seem to have been many in my line), George and Robert. These names are certainly prevelant in my Watkins family and the Watkins seem to have been in the Poquoson, Virginia area for a very long time.

Dunn you mentioned. They seem to be children of Hinde Russell Dunn [1779-4 Nov 1823] of Warwick and his wife Hannah. Lucy had daughters who married Edward Allen and William Hawley. My friend is curious if Wilberns, Allens or Hawleys might be mentioned in your Bible. Please send information on how you can be reached by phone or mail.

Ann and John had children Mary E. Cary b.3 may 1830 and James 21 march 1829.
next bible is Dunn family bible that shows: Fred H. Dunn son of Thomas R. Dunn and Sarah R. his wife was married to Martha A Wade daughter of Chidley Wade and Ann C. his wife on the 28 Dec 1869. These people are all related through marraiges into the Powell family of York County and the bibles came to me through great grandmother Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Powell Smith. I'm just not sure how. I'm happy to send the scans of the bibles to anyone who has info to share.

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to help my father-in-law find the grave of his mother. Her name was Mary (Skirginia/Scirginia) Seal. She was married first to James Clifford Fields and second to (Frank?) Mayo. She had one son with each marriage. I married her grandson through her first marriage.

She died possibly in an asylum or in a "regular" hospital (or on the way to one). Her sons were very young at the time.

Mary was born around 1914. She died around 1945 (maybe in early March). She was born in (maybe) Newport News (Warwick County, VA). She died (we believe) in Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. She may have been buried in Warwick County, VA (at least at the time it was Warwick County).

Can anyone give me some direction on who might be able to fill in these blanks? I've found nothing on her through Ancestry. It's like she fell off the face of the earth. My father-in-law is getting up in years and would love to visit her grave (for the first time).

Thank you,

Tara

Rose Cottage Plantation

I am looking for anyone who remembers or has information about what was once a 500 acre Plantation called Rose Cottage, located on what is now Saunders Road, Betz Lane, and the Big Bethel Reservoir. The original land was mostly in Elizabeth City county but also partly in Warwick county.
The land was owned until 1870 by Samuel Cook and James Kellum, who sold the property to George Baines Wright and later his son, Carrington Fitgzerald Wright who owned it in 1936. The 500 acres were split into parcels over the years, including a large piece taken by the US Gov't for the reservoir. Parts were owned by WH Mitchell and his wife, Clara V. Mitchell, and Thomas Saunders.
I am looking for any photos, documentation, stories, anything.
In particular, looking for old photos of the farmhouse built by Wright in 1936 and later occupied by August and Georgina Betz for whom the street is named. Finding descendents of these folks would be helpful.
Thanks for any information.

Re: Lee Family of Warwick Co., VA or Yorke County, VA 1600's

I have researched the family of Henry Lee of York County, Va., c. 1620 - 1657.

There was a John Lee who emigrated 1649 by Henry Lee, could have been a brother. I found no further record of him in York; he may have settled in Elizabeth City County and died there in 1698... We do not have a will for Henry Lee; but the York records refer to his children, and there is no record of a son John.

York records strongly suggest that Henry Lee and Richard Lee of York were related. However, there is no proof that this Richard Lee was Col. Richard Lee, and I believe that he was a different person.

Interesting! You've tapped into a line I've been researching on and off for many years! Ann Cary CURTIS and Chidly WADE are buried at Grafton Christian Church, in York County. I do not have a full listing of their descendents and dates (only four: Mary Ann 6/12/1848; John Christopher 7/31/1849; Sarah E. 1857; and Robert Wade). I'd love to know the rest.

Ann Cary CURTIS' mother is Virginia Elizabeth CARY (1803-1835), and her father is Christopher CURTIS (10/19/1800-9/8/1873), son of Rev. Thomas CURTIS and Ann PRESSON. Christopher is buried in the Smith Family plot in Yorktown. Rev. Thomas CURTIS is buried in the Curtis Family Cemetary in Newport News.

I have two siblings for Ann Cary CURTIS: Sarah Elizabeth (who married John R. THOMAS) and Thomas Miles CURTIS (who married twice). I have, however, been stumped on Virginia Elizabeth CARY (Ann Cary CURTIS' mother) until reading your post.

I will enjoy hearing from you!

Bryan L.
Poole's of Mulberry Island 1627-1870

I am researching the ancestors of Thomas Henry Poole (1834 - 1912). He was born in Mulberry Island and died in Surry County, VA. It appears that he is a descendant of the Poole's of Mulberry Island that go back to Robert Poole, an agent of Governor Yeardley that about 1627 recieved an"hundred" for his service as an "ancient planter" and was heir to his brother and father's hundreds. This total patent of 300 acres is recorded in The Adventures of Purse and Persons: 1624/5. Does anyone have any further knowledge of this family?
