Thank you for taking the time to look up the Taylor information! John Taylor was appt. guardian of Thomas Carney in 1775, orphan of John Carney.

The administrator's bond in 1810 sounds promising!

QUESTION: I assume that this John Taylor for whom Carney served as administrator died intestate; WHERE WOULD I BE ABLE TO OBTAIN THE ESTATE SETTLEMENT PER SE? I am hoping that an administrator's final settlement and distribution of assets would be included in that documentation.

At least, if the heirs at law were included, I would know of a biological connection, etc. in absence of a will. I am speculating that John Taylor was an uncle on his maternal side (which is an unknown) but likely one of the names that I keep seeing, i.e., Grimes, Deans, Bruce, Creech, Powell, Tart, Avis, etc.

Can you tell me where one might find a final settlement?

Thanks again,

Todd

PS If real estate was involved, I have not yet seen a deed with Carney as grantor, but it may be there. Still searching deeds on microfilm.

I can't address how the Taylor, Carney and Grimes families are related, but I can tell you it was quite common for a man to become a guardian for a female he wanted to marry.
A guardian was appointed when there was property (land or slaves) to be protected and administered. If there wasn't then a guardian was not appointed. When an orphan became 14 he/she could chose a guardian. In this case I'm sure Sarah was old enough to chose a guardian and she chose the man she was going to marry. The marriage needed the permission of the parent or guardian if the female was under age so the guardianship just provided that person to give permission for the marriage - it wasn't a guardianship as in one managing the estate of the orphan. I did notice that Thomas and John (probably siblings) received a guardian the same day in court and their guardian was James Grimes - probably another sibling.

I also noticed that neither James Grimes or Thomas Carney filed a guardian account for any of those orphans, so IMHO the guardianship was just to give permission for the marriage. With Sarah getting a guardian the relative James Grimes probably figured he needed to protect the other two orphans.

I checked wills for John Taylor and all three which seem applicable time wise were really nothing to write home about. On admin bonds there were 5 between 1810 and 1837 for John Taylors. One of note was the one dated 18 Jun 1810 - Thomas Carney was the administrator :-) Additional security for thet $600 bond was provided by Thomas Tart.

Sounds like you need to buy all the Norfolk County books available :-) Check out http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncfrsnnc/ for a complete list with the Guardian Accounts book coming out in the next couple of weeks.

Thomas Carney married Sarah Grimes in Norfolk in 1792, and a John Taylor was bondsman. His sister Martha or "Patsey" Carney married James Carney in 1798.

Does anyone know who this John Taylor was and what his relationship may have been to Thomas Carney or Sarah Grimes? Curiously, Thomas was appointed guardian of Sarah Grimes the same year he married her, a handy arrangement.

I am speculating that Thomas may have been related to Sarah, or to John but not sure how, possibly through the Grimes family?

Any help appreciated.

Looked this up for you. Westhaven Baptist Church is on the corner of King St and Caroline. The old Children's Home was next door to the church. Caroline runs the length of the entrance of the Holiday House for children. The road by the church is County St. The opposite side is Columbia St. Portsmouth Orphans Home. The web address I found this on reads (Get a map.net) put in search --Portsmouth Orphans Home(North-South) . You might try Court Street Library and ask them do they have any information on Orphanages in Portsmouth. Hope this will help. Gale This was the property of the old home that once stood there. Went there when Willie and Lucille Bailey were Matrons. My kinfolk.

Harry Winfield Mills 1875-1931

Trying to trace back my great grandfather. I am somewhat desperate for help after having looked a long time on my own and would be extremely grateful to anyone who can point me in the right direction. I already have all the official records I know of (census, military, etc.) but Virginia and Maryland records, where most of the clues are likely to be, contain many mysteries. There is no official birth record for him in Virginia.

His records fairly consistently claim a birth date on or about April 1, 1875, in Norfolk, Virginia, although his 1920 census claims a Maryland birthplace.

His father’s birthplace is variously listed as Virginia (West?) and Maryland; his mother’s birthplace is listed as Maryland and “at sea (U.S.)”.

He was in Chicago in 1908 when he enlisted in the U. S. Army and shipped out to Oregon. These are the earliest records I have of him.

His military papers list, as a connection, a cousin, one Alice Murphy of Vienna, Maryland. I have some suspicion that this may be the Alice Murphy who a few years later married George Bramble in Dorchester County, as I am part of the Ancestry DNA program, and have numerous cousin hits to descendants of the Bramble, Meredith, Mills, Moore, Murphy, Pritchett, etc. families who intermarried so much over the years in Dorchester County. I have no other connections to Maryland besides my great grandfather before the 17th-18th century, so while not proof this may be a good lead.

The 1874 Norfolk, VA phone directory lists exactly one Caucasian Mills, a W H Mills, oysterman, living in Atlantic City. It is quite possible that he was Harry’s father, or this could be a red herring. The child of a Chesapeake oysterman might well have the uncertainty about birthplace that my great grandfather showed in his paperwork, however.

Either his father or his mother may have some sort of roots in County Armagh, Ireland – or not, that’s anecdotal from family history, and might just as easily pertain his wife Nina Belle Moore’s ancestors, although I can trace them back some ways in the USA with confidence.

From late 1908 he spent as far as I know the rest of his life in Oregon, first in the military at Fort Stevens and then working for the Westport Lumber Company, where he was a foreman.

His most likely time of death is in 1931 but there is so far as I know no death record. Another anecdotal family story is that he was shot in some kind of bank robbery. I don’t know if there is a way to access Oregon criminal history records, but that might pinpoint time of death. I have not located an obituary, since the cost for searching over a whole year or more has so far been prohibitive and I live a long way from Oregon so can’t easily do it myself, but that is another possible source of more information. He lived in Portland in Multnomah County but often worked inWestport in Clatsop County.

His military records showed that he had multiple rather impressive scars when he joined. I have sometimes wondered if one or both of his parents died young or if he was born out of wedlock – although he worked with his hands and joined at 33, so there are any number of possible explanations. Booth is another possible first name for his father, and Winfield could be his mother’s last name, but I think those are just guesses of my grandfather’s from before he passed on.

I can be reached by message here at Ancestry or at sean.stidd@juno.com if you have any helpful information. Thank you for your time and consideration.
I am operating on a theory that my ancestor Charity Bruce Carney Hodges was a GRIMES prior to her three marriages between 1770 and 1783.
In 1773, Wm Carney and a Deans were security for the administrator of the estate of John Grimes; William was Charity's second husband and they were married probably by that time.
Is anyone out there knowledgeable of the Grimes family?

I also find that in Norfolk records, the name Charity is not particularly common; in 1753, James Bachelor was given administration of the estate of Charity Grymes (sic).

Was Charity the mother of John Grimes or is her identity known?

As a female I can understand her leaving the estate to her daughter-in-law. Under the laws at the time, the land normally went to the oldest son by primogenture. If James had died, his wife would have gotten 1/3rd of his land during her natural life and that might not have been enough to support her.

A female normally had more compassion for the fate of a widow or a female in general. For example if she had dower in land then she did have something, but the next husband would control it. If she owned land outright, her husband would own the land when they married...married women didn't own land.

I don't research the Carneys but I have abstracted a lot of Norfolk County data for books. As far as land sales, children who inherit land don't always have the respect for the land which a person who bought the land would have. Have you looked for a sheriff's sale for back taxes or a deed of trust which in turn was lost due to the debt not being paid?

Most of the Norfolk County families were inter-related and not many early marriage records survive.

Sharon Rea Gable

Thank you so much for the insight. Frankly, I had hoped, somehow, to determine Charity's maiden name. It is very telling that she left one third of her estate to her daughter in law Martha, EVEN IF her son James died without issue.

What is your take on this? Offhand, it would seem that Martha who was already a Carney, could have been a niece of Charity by blood. Even Charity's own daughters had to split one third under this contingency plan. As it was of course, James did live.

I had hoped to find some land transfers whereby son James did sell land he inherited from his father, and presumably his mother, but no such deed can be found.

Thanks again,

Todd

I don't think there is any doubt that Edward was the son of Abraham Bruce as you had already discovered. The guardian bond dated 20 Feb 1783 listed three children under age 21 - Richard, Edward and Charity - all with the guardian of Charity Carney (who we can probably call a black widow since she buried at least 3 husbands in 11 years!).

My guess would be that Thomas Bruce - the heir to 2/3rds of his father's land died an infant without issue around 1783. At that point Charity took responsiblity of the land through becoming a guardian to her children and/or step-children as they became heirs to their brother's land.

As far as Abraham not listing but one son in his will - that was all he needed to list. Virginia was under primogenture in 1785, so even if he didn't list Thomas (evidently his oldest)he still would have inherited the estate minus the dower. It wasn't necessary to list other children as they did not inherit anything.

Just obtained will of 5th gr grandmother CHARITY Hodges, 1800, Norfolk. Witnesses include Nathaniel and Mary Buxton, whose names I had not encountered. Is there a relationship?

I am descended from her previous marriage to Wm Carney (will, 1778). James appears to be the only son of that marriage. However, when Charity makes her will she left James' wife Martha one third of the estate if James died without issue, which is very unusual and points to some other kinship I would think.
the daughter in law Martha Carney WAS a Carney as well, and married James only months before Charity made her will.

Another curious item is that in the event of James' death, Charity left one third of her estate to "my son Edward Bruce". This is presumably the Edward Bruce for whom Charity was named guardian in 1783, "one of the orphans of Abraham Bruce".

More confusing is that there is indeed a will in 1772 for an Abraham Bruce, leaving widow Charity, but names only one son, Thomas, who upon becoming legal age gets two thirds of the estate. No mention made of another son. It is possible that the orphans were those of Thomas Bruce, and not technically Abraham, but yet his heirs and grandchildren.

Any help appreciated.

Starting with my grandfather :

*Melvin Grey Gibbs (1935-2010)NC - (Married Mary Chambers)

->Floyd Earl Gibbs (1906-1981)NC - (Married Reggie Louise Bowden)

-Warren Walter Gibbs (1871-1940)Lake Landing NC -

-Milton Selby Gibbs (1834-1904)NC - (Married Mary Dorcas Spencer?)

-Carney Gibbs (1795-1872)Hyde NC -(Married Polly Affa Spencer?)

>>>*After this is where I become unsure.
Thank you, and I will follow up with John Taylor, and the land records. There were two Thomas Carney marriages, and I am theorizing for now they were the same--the 1792 marriage to Grimes, and the 1806 marriage to a Bruce. The Bruce, Grimes and Carney families are heavily intertwined.
Thanks again for the help,

Todd

You might want to consider John Carney as a possible father of Thomas. Wingo's guardian book has Ann, Mary, Thomas and Matthew as the orphans of John in a 20 Apr 1775 bond. This bond doesn't mention Martha but it could mean one of two things...she went by multiple names (such as Martha Ann) or she had a different mother and therefore didn't fall under the same inheritance which these 4 children fell under.

The reason I suggest considering this Thomas is that the guardian was John Taylor. A John Taylor was also the surety for the marriage of Thomas to Sarah Grimes in 1792. Often a guardian served as a surety for a young person who had just come of age. The other thing to consider is if you eliminate this John (who didn't have a will) as the father then you need to be concerned with two Thomas' of the same general age in Norfolk County at the same time (very possible). Suggest tracking the land to see which Carney is which.

Thanks for prompt reply; makes me wonder if the Wm Carney and Abraham Bruce were son in law and father in law. I would lay money, yes, but have not had time to chase down Bruce family wills. It was one Abraham Bruce, whose orphans were placed under the guardianship of Charity (?Bruce) Carney in 1783. The 1750 Abraham may be the same one who left a will in 1772, which I have not had opportunity to find abstract of. I suspect that there was an Abraham, Jr., most probably the one who died c1783.

If you should run across anything else pertinent to the Bruces, please let me hear from you, and thanks again.

Todd

Don't know if this is useful to you but your Carney's, Bruces and my Deans are often mentioned and adjacent to each other in:

Norfolk County Titheables 1730-1750
" " " 1766-1780.

They are in the north side of the Western Branch precinct.

A William Carney is titheable with Abraham Bruce in 1750.

No mention of William and James Carney together in either volume but James Carney is titheable with Samuel Carney showing 300acres land in June 1771.

My supposed 5th GGF James Daines married a Diana Bruce abt 1735 likely in this Western Branch area per a Norfolk County will.

Remember these lists are NOT complete and are just records of people living together in the titheable year. Essentially males of 16 years and upward were considered titheable.

People of same surname on the same entry were very likely father and sons but no guarantee as they could be farming partners etc.

Probably just adds to your confusion but that's about all I have.

Jim Deans

My 4th great grandfather James Carney was the son of William and Charity Carney, whose maiden name may have been BRUCE. Charity was made guardian of the infant children of a Bruce, perhaps a brother in 1783. In her will, Charity refers to her "son" Edward Bruce, most likely her nephew that she raised, when she wrote her will in 1800.
The Bruces and Carneys had generations of interactions, both in Virginia and Kentucky.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know of any one who has easy access to death records in VA :-)
What I have is abstracted data which I've done for the death certificates for 1912-1917 found in the vault in the records room of the Chesapeake courthouse and deaths from 1904-1910 which were either in the death register or in the surviving burial permits (again at the Chesapeake courthouse). Your William doesn't exist in either one.

The Library of Virginia has images of the early death records for Norfolk County, but statewide registration didn't begin until 1912. You might want to contact them.

From there they went to the Sleepy Hole, Nansemond and Western Branch, Norfolk. After that, they started moving to Portsmouth, Mt. Hermon.
Some days you're lucky and some days you aren't - but this is still your lucky day.

In McIntosh's abstracts of Norfolk County wills I found the will of Thomas Scott written 25 Sep 1749 and proved 20 Oct 1749. He mentions his wife Martha, his brother David Scott and then starts on his children and grandchildren....son John, son Thomas, son William (who BTW got 220 acres in Princess Anne County as well as 200 acres in Norfolk Co), dau Elizabeth Harbard, dau Frances Veal, dau Margaret Scott, my wife Martha's eldest son who is called James Scott who gets one shilling, dau Abigall Scott, son Samuel, dau Agnes Scott, dau Dina Scott, son Solomon , grandson Thomas Scott son of Thomas, grandson Samuel Veal, granddau Elizabeth Harbard. Sons John and William were appointed executors.

I'm sure you'll have more questions after this :-)

Again thanks! I seem to be getting quite lucky here! Frances was the youngest child of Nicholas & Aphia, born in 1761 and David Porter was her brother-in-law, married to her sister, Ann.
The Veale and Scott surnames also feature promimently with this family and I'm sorting through them now. I suspect Tenant Scott (m. Ann Wonycott), Abigail Scott (m. Nicholas Wonycott) and Thomas Scott of the 1823 Guardian Bond are all interconnected somehow.
Thanks again for all your help with this!

Everytime I tell you that's everything I see something else. In the book I'm working on of odd children who didn't have guardian bonds, I found Nicholas. At court on 20 April 1775 it was ordered that the church wardens of Elizabeth River Parish bind Nicholas Wonycott to Gilchrist and Taylor according to law. This was an indenture or apprencticeship and Gilchrist and Taylor was a company but I can't tell you what they did.

At court 19 Dec 1776 Frances Wonycott chose David Porter as her guardian. The fact that she chose her guardian means she was older than 14.

I'm still working on my book I'm calling Orphans and Bastards from the Minute Books, so I might find more. I'll be publishing them in that upcoming book :-)

Thank you! I found a marriage of a James Veale to Miss Abigail Wonycott in 1822. I suspect she may also have been a child of Nicholas - did the guardian records you provided earlier have any other entries for Wonycott? One online source has Nicholas' wife as Abigail Scott. Perhaps a sister to Tenant Scott who married Rebecca Wonycott. Their son, Tenant, seems to have married Annis Veale. Still untangling all the branches on this one.
BTW - is the bond date for Edward 1820 or 1833?

They have some in the records room at the Chesapeake Court house, some at the Library of Virginia and some at the Library of Virginia Annex in Richmond. They are not all together but mixed in with other records in some cases just like the guardian bonds. And no, they are not online

Thanks once more for all your help with this. My James was a witness in Richmond in 1848 at the marriage of a James Veal and I notice the surname several times in the references you have provided. It helps it all link together nicely.
Where would I obtain copies of the Adm. Bonds you mention below? I'm assuming they are not online?

21 was the age to enter into a contract and a guardian bond was a contract - especially since a guardian bond meant that you were taking over the financial aspects of the ward

There are early marriages, but most of them didn't survive. All dates are bond dates -
1 Jan 1792 William Wonycutt married Margaret Jenkins orphan of James Jenkins. Nicholas was the surety
20 Apr 1778 John Lello married Mary Wonycott. Edward Wonycott was the surety
2 Jul 1770 David Porter married Ann Wonnycott dau of Nicholas. Surety was Matthew Godfrey
15 Jul 1778 Tenant Scott married Rebecca Wonycott. Surety was Matthew Godfrey

The earlier Nicholas must have died ca 1773 as the tithable list has Aphia (female) reporting his slaves in 1774. None of his sons were listed before 1780 when the last abstracted tithables were done - white males were taxed at 18.

There were administrative bonds filed for Capt. Edward (1833), Elizabeth (1820), Mathew (1836) and William (1814) if any of those interest you. Nicholas was surety for an admin bond for Robert Mackie in 1769. Nicholas also signed a bond with Augustine Slaughter for $20,000 in 1795 for James S. Matthews. Matthews was appointed to collect and preserve the goods of Samuel Veale when the will was contested.
I can't tell you exactly where those several guardian bonds are. I can tell you where all of the bonds are ....some in the Chesapeake Courthouse Records room, some in the Library of Virginia and some in the Library of Virginia Annex. We (me and my co-author) searched all the bonds at those three locations to create a book of the guardian bonds (Norfolk County Virginia Guardian Bonds 1801-1850 by Sharon Rea Gable and Truitt M. Bonney). A lot, but not all, of those records are also available on microfilm from the Library of VA through interlibrary loan. Some of the bonds we found were not filmed.

You can check out all of our Norfolk County books (and order some :-) ) at the Family Research Society of Northeastern NC web site http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncfrsnnc/

The chancery records are available at the Library of Virginia, but the online index will tell you if they have anything which might help.... http://www.virginiamemory.com/collections/chancery/ At some point they will be putting those chancery records on line (as funds permit). If you can wait for them to go online you can order the record from the Library of Virginia.

I don't know of any of these Norfolk County records being online which is why Truitt and I created all these books....we needed the information as well.

Another question - was 18 the age at which someone could become a legal guardian in 1822, which would indicate that Nicholas was the elder brother. Edward Wonycott is a son of Nicholas Sr and Tenant Scott a son-in-law. I would think their father, Nicholas, was also a son of Nicholas Sr.
Are there early marriages available that might show who Nicholas Jr married?

There's a guardian bond for James and Nicholas dated 18 Dec 1815. They are listed as the orphans of Nicholas Wonycott and George Leslie was their guardian with the $4,000 bond secured by John Talbot and John Owens. That bond was marked out and two separate bonds were completed for the two orphans on 20 Feb 1816. Everything was the same on these bonds at $2,000 each except for the second surety - which was Joel Watts.
Nicholas didn't have another surviving guardian bond but may have been the one who married Elizabeth Walker in Norfolk (city) with a bond dated 15 May 1822.

James had another guardian bond dated 21 Jan 1822 with Nicholas as his guardian with the $2,500 bond secured by Edward Wonycott and Tenant Scott. He then had another bond dated 21 July 1823 with Thomas Scott as his guardian with security of the $1,500 bond by Beverly Bayton and James Veale.

It's also interesting to note that there are no surviving guardian accounts for James or Nicholas.

You might find something in the chancery files at Library of Virginia (index on line)

Looking for details on any Wonycott families in Portsmouth or Norfolk Co in c1800-1820. My James Wonycott was born there in c1808 and later went to Richmond. I suspect he was a grandson or great-grandson of Nicholas Wonycott (b.1722), but haven't found the link as yet.
Any leads appreciated.
