Bettie is Elizabeth (born 1807) and John B is John Ballentine McCloud (born Sept 1812)-they are buried off Jones Creek near Barnes Rd in Chesapeake, Va-John Ballentine McCloud was Clerk of the Yard, Norfolk Navy Yard at his death in December, 1866. He was elected to Congress in a special election of Dec 1862, as a unionist-good article on him in New York Tribune of Dec 20, 1862. He was not seated by credentials committee. His election was linked to Lincoln's emancipation proclaimation, and there is a telegraph message from MG Dix to Lincoln about McCloud dated Dec 31st 1862, in Lincoln's papers.

Their oldest son John Allen McCloud (834-1911) was a prominent citizen of South Norfolk, he was a teacher, customs inspector and later owner of a general mechandise (primarily grocery) business on Liberty Street. He also aided in establishing Elon College, NC. His grandson William Allen Harper (who lived with John Allen McCloud) was President of Elon from 1911 to 1931.

I don't have an Elizabeth Williamson in my direct line. I checked my records for sisters (of direct line ancestors) named Elizabeth but found none. There were a number of Williamson lines in Norfolk County and Princess Anne County. There were tons of Portlocks too. Since Elizabeth was a very popular name, I'm sure I've seen it in indexes. I wasn't able to find Elizabeth Williamson (or McCloud) in "Tombstone Inscriptions of Norfolk County Virginia." However, there were quite a few McClouds in Magnolia Cemetery in Norfolk (city), most born in the mid- to late- 1800s. If you haven't already visited the Chesapeake courthouse records room, you might give it a try. The Wallace Room in the Chesapeake Central Library has quite a few books that might be helpful, including "Tombstone Inscriptions...." Although, come to think of it, many of those same books are in the Sargeant Memorial Room in Kirn Library in downtown Norfolk. Good luck and happy searching!

My great-great grandmother was Elizabeth Williamson, born around 1807 in Norfolk County. She married John Ballentine McCloud from St Brides Parish, Norfolk County(born 1812) in 1832. In 1835 when John Ballentine McCloud adopted his sister Mary Ann McCloud, two Portlocks supported him according to court papers in Norfolk. My great uncle Jesse McCloud is buried in the Gibson Cemetery in Portlock, and there is a McCloud Rd there. Have you run across any info on Elizabeth Williamson? Thanks

I undertand he's working on another one too. You have to write him at 1900 Central Ave in Memphis to get his books.

Guardian bonds are not only for orphans. A man can become guardian of his own children so make sure the word "orphan of" is included on the bond. And yes most definitely the mother can still be alive and she can become the guardian. She loses the right to be guardian if she remarries, but her new husband can apply to become guardian.

Need to remember why guardian bonds exist --- it was not for the welfare of the child. It was for the welfare of their inheritance. Guardian bonds were not created for all orphans - only for ones which had a large enough estate to support them. The guardian was also not the one the orphan necessarily lived with. The law stated that the guardian "shall have custody" but that's not the same as "he will live with you".

If a poor child (one without enough inheritance) became an orphan he might be put under an apprentice bond rather than a guardian bond. If the person looking after the child didn't realize that an inheritance could be in jeopardy then they might not have taken out a guardian bond until someone tried to take the inheritance. You'll find plenty of those orphans in the Minute Books for Norfolk County where a person was appointed guardian ad litem for the case.

You'll also find females being the subject of a guardian bond one day and marrying their guardian the next day. A girl needed her parent's permission to marry - they were dead, her boy friend got appointed her guardian and then gave permission for the marriage. In that case you would never see an actual guardian account listed in the books.

When you find a guardian bond, look for land records as he inherited land or slaves - enough to support him. Chancery records and Minute Books tell a lot.

Also remember unrelated people rarely signed the bond. They were extremely good friends or relatives to sign for a $2,000 bond.

BTW, we (Bonney and I) have abstracted the Norfolk County Guardian Bonds for Norfolk County covering 1801-1850, along with some corrections to Wingo's earlier work. Wingo had not included bonds where a man became the guardian to his own children.

Tks for your informative reply. Actually, I have been, many times, in the PAC Court House, but not lately. Also, I have seen the accounts for my GrGrandfather. Sadly, didn't make any copies. I'm in the Tidewater area but just don't do the running around I used to do. I grew up with my maternal grandmother so heard much about her Dad and I even have pictures of him. The accounts ended when he dropped out of private school at age 17 and joined the Confederacy.
Again, thanks for your interest.

Thanks. You've helped confirm what I was beginning to suspect - that an "orphan" could have a living mother. With that interpretation, everything else makes more sense.

My research spills over into Princess Ann County rather frequently, so I've mucked around in those records from time to time. The CD you got sounds to be a copy of the Index to Guardian's Accounts, and you are right, all that will give you is a listing of the accounts. You would need to then go to the guardian's accounts themselves to find out what's in them. What you'll generally find is ledger-like listings of expenses submitted to the court by the guardian(s) periodically. These can tell you who the orphan was living with, and may name other family members. In theory, the accounts would be submitted periodically until the orphan reached adulthood - age 21 under English common law. So IN THEORY, the date of the last account should tell you the year in which the orphan reached age 21, and from that you can back-calculate an approximate birth year.

The original guardian's accounts are still held by the Princess Ann County courts. Microfilm copies of most - probably all - are at the Virignia State Library in Richmond. I am guessing from your post that you may not live near either. If so...two suggestions. First is go to the VSL website and check their on-line catalog of holdings. Its not particularly easy to use, but you'll get the hang of it. SOME of their microfilm is available for interlibrary loan. If the microfilm of guardians' accounts is loanable, you can get it through your local library.

If that doesn't work...plan B. As I said, my research takes me into Princess Ann County records from time to time. AND, I live within an easy drive of Richmond. If you want to contact me by e-mail, and give me the necessary information, I'd be glad to look and see what I find next time I make a research trip to Richmond.

If you want to go with plan B, contact me at the following e-mail: Xkenives99@comcast.net. Do NOT use the leading "X" in the address. Its there just to confound automated e-mail address mining software.

Ken Ives

Thanks, Jack. I suspected as much, but didn't really KNOW. Looking at the totality of facts, it makes more sense that Lydia married James, Jr., but the guardian's bond was making me wonder.
I found a census listing for the "orphan's asylum" in 1870. There were 20 orphans at that time, mostly boys. The superintendent was Edward Rogers and his wife Ursula. As a side note, in 1860, Edward and Ursula were in charge of the Portsmouth City Almshouse.

My great grandfather had a Guardian Account in Princess Anne County. His father died when he was 6 but his mother was still living. I recently sent off for and received a CD on Guardian Accounts of PA County, 1736 - 1871. It did me no good as it only listed all the names of those with accounts and I already knew he had one. Gives no other info but some print abut these accounts. The Guardian could be the orphan's mother, older sibling, older sibling's spouse, uncle or other relative. The original records are in 15 hand-written volumes.

I'm hoping some one may know more about Virignia guardian's bonds than I do.

This story starts in the early 18th century, with a guy named James Ives, who had a son, also named James Ives. I have a copy of a Norfolk County marriage bond indicating that James Ives married Lydia Lewelling.

I have also found a 1795 Norfolk County guardian's bond issued for "Sarah Ives, orphan of James Ives." There are three signatories to the bond. Two are men who, as far as I know, are unrelated. The third is a woman -- Lydia Ives.

From the timing, I'm pretty sure Sarah was the daughter of James, Jr. The question I'm trying to answer is, which James married Lydia Lewelling? From the dates and facts involved, it could conceivably be either.

So, the question: when a late 18th century Virginia Court issued a guardian's bond for an "orphan," did that mean that BOTH parents were dead, as it would today? (In which case Lydia must have been Sarah's grandmother, and have married James, Sr). Or, since women had a much different legal status back then, would the court have appointed male guardians even if Sarah's mother was still alive? (In which case Lydia was probably Sarah's mother, and have married James, Jr).

From what I can tell, he was born about 1823, married Amesia (or Amesa or Artemesia, I've seen it different ways) Meads, born in NC (a widow: from Marriage Bond witnessed by a Wilson Bailey). He had three sons, John Joseph (b 1849), Virginius Leonitus (b about 1855), and James Claudious (b 1854). I've been told he died in Deep Creep during the area's Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1855.
Thanks for reading
My fathers uncle, Ignatious Gray, moved from Buxton NC to Norfolk around 1920. One daughter, Evelyn Futch, was buried in Riverside Cem., but when I check their list I can't find her. The other daughter Audrey Culver may be their as well. I do not know where Ignatious was buried. This family was still in Norfolk thru the 1940's.Evelyn may have a granddaughter named Dawn. If any one has any info for this family please let me know.

I'm not sure where I got this info, and as this is an old request, you may already have this info: Here is as I have it: Parents of Anna Jane Voss: Israel Voss and Mary (Unknown, maybe "Ross"); Israel born 1636 died 14 Jan 1713. I have Mary b. 1640 d. 1677. They were married approx. 1668. I also have Symon J. Jackson & Anna Jane Jackson as having 7 children (John, Margery, Richard, James, Israel Voss, Elizabeth and Simon). Hope that helps. Sorry I have no source on this info.

Was researching pre RW so never got that far along into the 1800s. Sorry I cannot help.
About the only piece of information I learned that was helpful is there typically is a waiting period of about 7 years if a mariner was lost at sea and the declaration of his death. This was written into English law and seemed to match the will-probate dates I have found for my ancestor. Good luck.

He may have been a "sponsor" for lack of a better word. He seems to have owned and sold land in the area. Just a theory but the more I look the more sense it makes.I can not find any record of a New Norfolk Company. Anyone else have any ideas.

Hi Again
The fact that you found Georgia buried at Magnolia Cemetery
is a good sign, that means all is not lost yet. there is two things you can try and you might get Lucky.
One is contack Virginia Health Dept.Division of Vital Records in Richmond, Va. at P.O.1000 Richmond,Va.23218
for a death certificate on James. You know he was alive in
1900 and dead by 1906,they will seach up to 10 years for
and if they find it you will get a copy of Death Certificate.

Two: you are someone you get can Search in Norfolk Health
Dept.for the date of death. I have done both and had good luck.
It a good chance that Georgia may be buried next to James.
I hope this helps you GOOD LUCK.
Jack

Joi,
I would like a copy of your book "An Adventure of Faith"/ a history of St Paul's Church, Norfolk, Va. if it is still available. My ancesters were very early ministers in Norfolk and Porthsmouth and I would enjoy reading your research.

Russell C. Etheridge III

Quick and possibly easy question: I'm researching an ancestor from the 1860s who was a ship's navigator. He lived near the Chesapeake & Albemarle Canal, near Norfolk. It's likely he sailed out of Norfolk or Portsmouth. I'd like to learn about his travels during the Civil War. Do you have any idea what records were kept about merchant ships' crews in the 1800s? Any ideas where I might find some prospects? Norfolk newspapers haven't helped much. Thanks! AWJ
