Hello, does anyone have any further information of a William Medcalf/Metcalf of Nansemond County, Virginia?? What I do know is that there is a rejected claim from abt. 1833 stating that the above name was in the Revolutionary War as the rank of Lieutenant. Can anybody elaborate on this? I also found a 1783 tax list with two William Medcalf's listed and supposing that one is a son to the other and that is all I have been able to find. Does anyone have this particular person or name in their family tree or is there anymore light that can be shed? I have old family letters that state the above info and in hopes to connect to this. Please help.
Regards,
Chris Metcalf

I have also made a plea for some UK drurys to take the yDNA test...

I'm looking for Myles Wright who shows on the tax rolls for Nansemond county in 1783. He is probably the man who married widow Elizabeth Dean in 1779 in Norfolk county. A Samuel Veale held the marriage bond. There is a Myles Wright in the county in 1830 who could be his son. My interest is in finding the parents of Sarah Wright born 4 April 1794 in Virginia, married John P. Brown and named a son Myles Wright Brown. Far too many common names, except for the "Myles". Which also shows as Miles and occasionally Mills.
Do any of these ring a bell?

Nathan Powell of Lee Co., GA 1840-50 did not marry Margaret Gamble.

The Coweta Co, GA marriage record shows that a Nathaniel Powell married a female w/ only the initials of M.G. on 28 Dec 1832. This was not the Nathan Powell of Lee Co., GA. There was no Margaret Gamble in Coweta Co., GA.

However, take a look at Leon County, FL marriage records: Nathan Powell mar. Margaret Gamble 12/26/1831, Marriage Book WX, page 22.

The 1830 US Census of Leon Co., FL shows Nathan Powell. The 1830 US Census of Jefferson Co., FL (county next to Leon Co.) shows Jeremiah Powell. Jeremiah Powell mar. Violet Gamble, widow of John L. Gamble of Twiggs Co., GA and Jefferson Co., FL.

Both Jeremiah and Nathan Powell show on various records in Twiggs Co., GA in the mid-1820's. As the census records above demonstrate, they had left Twiggs Co., GA and lived in Jefferson/Leon Co., FL before the 1830 census.

By 1834, Nathan Powell was a J.P. in Leon Co., FL. On 20 Oct 1835, Nathan Powell received a land grant in Leon Co., FL.

By 1840, both Jeremiah and Nathan Powell are both dead. Jeremiah Powell's widow, Violet, shows in the 1840 Leon Co., FL census.

From the Powell Family File at the Florida State Archives in Tallahassee, FL: "Jeremiah Powell came to Florida from Twiggs Co. GA about 1824. He first lived in Jefferson Co., FL and bought land in Leon Co., FL in 1830. His Last Will and Testament dated January 23, 1838 shows his wife was Violet, daughters names were Julia, Elizabeth M., and Caroline. His sons were Charles L., Adin and Joseph Powell. He died leaving an estate that included over 1700 acres and 44 slaves. Jeremiah Powell had removed to Tampa, FL shortly before his death on 24 Oct 1838. Violet Powell was the widow of John L. Gamble of Twiggs Co., GA. In Dec 1831, Margaret Gamble, daughter of John L. and Violet Gamble, married Nathan Powell, the only brother of Jeremiah Powell. Expenses of the estate of Jeremiah Powell shows the executor visited LaGrange, GA and Cahawba, AL."

From The Powell Family of Virginia and the South (Lucas), p. 40: "54c. Jesse Powell married Lydia and died 1777 in Johnston Co., NC, leaving sons Jeremiah and Nathan Powell."

Jeremiah Powell's obit from x23 Nov 1839, The Floridian (Tallahassee, FL): "Died on the 24th of October last at Tampa Bay, East Florida, Jeremiah Powell, Esquire, of this county (Leon Co.). The deceased was a native of North Carolina, but removed many years since to Georgia and soon thereafter the cession of this Territory to the United States, settled here. He was for many years before his death a class leader and one of the stewards of the Methodist Episcopal Church and by a life of unaffected piety, acquired the respect and esteem of his neighbors and associates. Having been for some time afflicted with a pulmonary affection, he was advised by his physician to go further south. In 1838, he visited South Florida and Cuba with the same object. While there, he took a violent and sudden cold which caused his death in a few days after its attack."

The Nathan Powell of 1840/50 Lee Co., GA is likely the same Nathaniel Powell of 1810 Robeson Co., NC, living close to other Powells, i.e., Douglas and Nicholas Powell. He married Charity Bird, the daughter of Rev. Isaac Bird, who died in Robeson Co., NC. Nathan Powell's sister, Loramey Powell married Joel Bird, son of Rev. Isaac Bird and sister of Charity Bird.

Another near neighbor in 1810 Robeson Co., NC was Levi Barfield. He also shows as a neighbor in Lee Co., GA.

Quinny Powell of Lee Co., GA moved to Monroe Co. AL by 1850 where many other Robeson Co., NC families removed to. Note there were two different Quinny Powells in early GA records. The one in Houston Co., GA and other counties was a different man.

Loami Powell of 1840 Lee Co., GA apparently died before 1850. His children show in poor school records in 1845 (Poor School Records, Folder 55, Image 2, at GA Archives.)

Thomas Powell b. 1839-40, shows in the household of Quinny Powell in 1850-60 Monroe Co., AL. It is not known if this is a son of Quinny or Loami Powell. Rev. Thomas Wm Powell moved back to GA between 1860 - 62, and became a Bapt. preacher. He died Berrien Co., GA in 1887.

If anyone knows of a male descendant of this Powell line who would like to test his Y-DNA, the Haplogroup is I1. Descendants of Douglas Powell of Robeson Co., NC are I1. Nicholas Powell of Robeson Co., NC and Marion Co., MS are also I1. All of Nathan Powell's male descendants will be I1 as well.

The Powell DNA Project is at: http://jpbdna.com/powell-surname-dna-project.htm
What can you share? I know a Christopher Gewin was born in New Kent County Virginia in 1683, and he was the eldest child of Christopher Columbus Gewin who was born in Cornwall England in 1660 or 1662. There is a good set of geneology charts on the www.gewin.org austrailian site. They go back to the Henry VIII time, but I struggle to make a connection between the Virginia Christopher Columbus and the ancesters in England, even though there are several Christophers, Thomases, etc. I am of the line CC, Thomas, Christopher, John, Daniel, Christopher, Allie, Percy . . .

The NY SPECTATOR newspaper of 15 Dec 1841 reported from the Norfolk Herald of 9 Dec the following story:

SHIPWRECK & LOSS OF LIFE
The sloop Emily about 35 or 40 tons, C H HOUSEMAN, master, of Staten Island, from up the bay bound to Nansemond River to finish loading with oysters, was capsized about a mile to the northward of Old Point Comfort on Friday last [3 Dec 1841] about 9 am by which accident three of the persons on board were drowned, to wit: Capt HOUSEMAN, a man by the name of DECKER and another, name unknown. The owner, Mr SLEIGHT, was the only one saved.

I have been seeking in vain to find the first name and possibly the age of the "man by the name of DECKER." I've searched newspapers for fuller accounts to no effect. I wouldn't mind knowing all the names if possible.

Would a kind Virginia researcher please suggest some other way to learn this detail? Thanks in advance!

Just ran across this one from five years back. John Stansall (1662-1713) emigrated to Virginia (what is now Virginia Beach at Henry Neck) in 1683 as noted. He was indentured to William Haviland, merchant of London, for four years to become a tobacco planter. He is listed paying quitrent on 500 acres in Nansemond County (now Suffolk city) VA in 1704. The 1981 book "The Stancill Family History" (Hugh W. Stancill) shows married Katherine Hardy (probably ca 1688-89) and that John moved just south into North Carolina (probably Chowan County) sometime between 1705-1709. His children owned land along the south side of the Roanoke River by the 1720's. I am interested in learning more about the concept of two brothers of John, William and Nicholas. I do recall running across a deed witness by a Nicholas Stansill ca 1714 in NC, which is too early and out of sequence with the known children.

Hello Barbara. Probably you have noted that I am quite active on the web now-a-days in searching around the Drurys from Jacksonville. I have come to the oldest ancestor in this tribe: Charles Drury of Nansemond County, member of Chuckatuck Parish. And I would like to come in touch with you regarding our joint goal: Who was he and where did he came from. I have found out that he was well established when he wrote in 1759 his will. In addition to this I have found his name in "Makers of America: Biographies of leading men of thoughts and action, the men who constitute the bone and sinew of American prosperity and life" where the family history of John Colin Drewry is written.
Here I found:
"Captain Charles Drury and Mr. Thomas Drury were among the vestry of a small parish called Chuckatuck in Nansemond County in 1702-1709. Samuel Drury and Benjamin Drury appear in the list of grantees of land for service during the Revolution"

(I don't know what the word grantees mean)

I would appriciate if you would react on this mail directly to my e-mail address.

Regards
Jan M Keus
Norway

janm@keus.no

Gale, I have been trying to unravel the Nelms families of Nansemond County. In your travels around Suffolk, I would appreciate anything you find. An ancestor of mine, David Nelms, wrote a letter in the 1830s from Sullivan County, TN in which he said he was born and raised in Nansemond County. He moved away from Nansemond County to Person County, NC between 1800-1809 and moved on to TN in 1821. There were at least 4 Nelms families in Nansemond by 1785. I believe the eldest one came down from Northumberland County bef 1750. Any help or leads would be appreciated. Thanks, Chuck.

Jeffry Wilson (b. 1825), my ggggrandfather, was reported in the 1870 census to be in Jones Co., Georgia with his 8 children, but without an adult female in the household. He reported to the census taker that he had been born in VA; his adult children reported the same about their father in later censuses. The 1880 census reported him to be in Nansemond Co., VA.

I would appreciate any information, suggestions or assistance that anyone can provide me in my research.

Books I have which have helped me recently in researching this area

Original Persons of Quality; All 3 volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers -- Virginia Land Patents and all 3 volumes of Hathaway's Register (contains lots of lists of conveyances that specifically mention persons residing in Nansemond, Virginia.)

Persons of Quality includes lists of living and dead in Warrisqueoc/Isle of Wight, VA (sometimes mistakenly called Warwick Squeak by the English colonists -- a funny name to my mind -- Did they consider Isle of Wight area the 'squeak' to Warwick across the James River? ;-).

Cavaliers and Pioneers includes early land patents for Warrisqueoc/Isle of Wight and Elizabeth City counties. The Nansemond River was the border between them for some time. So it's great to check records for both counties. Then later land patents progressively include New Norfolk (Elizabeth City county on the southern side of the James River), then Upper Norfolk when New Norfolk was split. Upper Norfolk of course eventually became Nansemond County.

I also found a name in the muster lists for Warrisqueoc -- Wassell (or Wessell) Weblin(g). I also found this name associated with a will in Elizabeth City County Wills & Administrations.

Hathaway's Register includes listings of conveyances in Chowan Precinct, Albemarle County, VA which specifically name residents of NANSEMOND, VA.

Put all of these together and you might get lucky and find clues to help you in your searched.

Happy Hunting

Barry Jernigan -- A documented Jernigan (back to my great-great grandfather, James Silas Jernigan but my Y-chromosome is Group 7A Chandler (proven through DNA test results) -- back to John Chandler who arrived in VA on the ship "Hercules" in 1610 and was a resident of the Elizabeth City/Warwick Co, VA area for most of his life (even owned a plantation called Newport News at one time)
