Francis Howard came to Virginia in 1648. He had his passage paid for him by Thomas Davies. If one paid for their own passage they would receive 50 acres of land. If the another person paid for your passage he would receive land. Thomas Davies had transported 10 people, including Francis Howard and received 500 acres.
I have read that he was the son of Henry Frederick Howard Earl of Arundel and Lord Maltravers, his oldest son Thomas was restored to the dukedom of Norfolk. Even though this man had nine sons and the younger sons would not have inherited much in England, I'm sure his son would have been able to afford passage to Virginia. There is a Peter and John Arundel listed in Virginia as Gents, whereas Francis was not.
Francis is my ancestor as well.
