Hi Robert,
I am descended from John William Bell Morris, Andrew Jackson Morris, his daughter, Sarah Melvina Morris (Miller) Patton, her daughter Ruby Hazel Patton Evans, & her daughter, Mary Magdalene Evans (Johnson) Jefferson. I am the 2nd daughter of MaryEvans-- I have been researching my Morris ancestors for a while now. Would love to share information, pictures and stories with you. My Grandmother, Ruby Patton Evans was born in Pulaski, VA 1899. Her Mother, Sarah Morris Patton died Aug 23-24 1910 of Palegra. I have never seen any pictures of her-- would you happen to know if any of the Morris family has information or pictures of her, her husband, Samuel L Patton,? It is great knowing that there are some living Morris's out there that share the same Morris blood line with me--- Thank you- Take care, Susan Johnson Luttrell, Portsmouth,VA

Peter ARNEY 1772-1845

Peter Arney
Born: 1772 (Tryon County, North Carolina)
Died: 1845 (Overton County, Tennessee)

Lincoln County, North Carolina, Court of Pleas & Quarters, October 1787.

Peter Arney, 15, "orphaned" son of Jacob Arney, deceased, is hereby "bound out" to John Fullenwider.Fulenwider, to learn the trade of a Miller, until the age of 21.

It's unclear, if Peter Arney, remained with John Fullenwider/Fulenwider, until the age of 21 (1793).

Supposedly after this, Peter Arney, left North Carolina, and settled in the area of Wythe County, Virginia. Whereby he married Margaret (surname/maiden name, unknown), and began their family (i.e. had children).
Supposedly, Margaret Arney (b: 1793), Adam Arney (b: 1797), Henry Arney (b: 1799), & John Arney (b: 1802), were all born in Virginia.

Around 1799, Peter Arney moved to the "Cumberland area" between Kentucky & Tennessee. It's quite possible that his Wife and young children, remained in Virginia, while Peter Arney built them a home.

[Note: This Peter ARNEY is not the Peter Arney, who married Catherine Fox.]

My objective, is to hopefully find the surname/maiden name, of Margaret who married Peter, probably around 1792/1793.

Also, to possibly find proof, of their children's births, in Virginia.

Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I appreciate it.

Do you by any chance descend from Isaac (Son of CAT) and Jane Mills? I think I have positive proof that David and Mary are not the parents of CAT. I had a 67 marker DNA test along with another distant cousin thru Family Tree DNA done and matched none of the men claiming to be from the line of David.

From earlier posts, I note your interest in Cornelius Alexander Taylor (hereafter "CAT," who was born in 1794 in Wythe County, VA. I also note in the thread reference to a source book cited by many researchers interested in the parents of this Cornelius Taylor: "From Log Cabins to the White House," by Mary Taylor Brewer.

With respect to the matter of CAT's parents, Brewer claims that he is the son of David Taylor (of Patrick County, VA) and Mary Blevins. My efforts to "prove" and document Brewer's findings succeeded only in proving that Brewer knowingly, unquestionably created a fictional family history for Cornelius Alexander Taylor. Unfortunately, she has led many people to create fictional family trees.

I'm still searching for Cornelius's parents. But I have put aside my dog-eared copy of Brewer's book!!
Sue,
No, I haven't got any more info. I really haven't seen much on-line to help. I have strong suspicions about this connection but have never seen it tied together in a family tree on the Rutherfords or in any Virginia records. There are too many coincidences in Lee County for them not to be related.

Hi, I do believe that that is true, Have you checked out the Chancery records at the library of Va. I did type in the Rutherford name and the Haynes name and I can say they did know each other very well, because they were witnesses for for some court tranactions. and that fact that two of the Haynes boys living with the Rutherford families in 1850 would make me believe that they were related for sure.

Thanks
Sue

I did find the marriage record of Melinda Belle and William Riggins on familysearch.org, I was just very curious about the last name on her daughter's marriage record of Miner, my first reaction is that Melinda remarried.

I am going to send for Amanda's marriage record to see if there is anything else I can use. I have not found a death record for Melinda Riggins at all, she is on the 1900 census as head of household with a few children still in their teens. She seems to disappear after that. She has always lived in Wythe County, VA.

Looking at the marriages of her siblings, the evidence would seem to indicate Melinda's last name was Bell and not a middle name of Belle. Her marriage to William Riggins also shows that her last name was Bell. Familysearch has the marriage records for a William Riggins marrying on 16 Oct 1853 to Malinda Bell. The 1880 census also has a Frances Bell in their household. She is listed as William's mother-in-law.

I am not sure why Malinda has the name Miner after Riggins. Usually, I have found that it means someone has remarried, however I was not able to find a marriage for Malinda under Bell or Riggins to a Miner.

She was born and raised in Wythe County, VA. Any opinions?

In Search of Parents of Mitchell Carter b. 1774 Virginia, married Idress Craig

In search of information concerning the parents of Mitchell Carter b. 1774 in Virginia. I have seen reference to his father as a John Carter but know nothing more than that. Mitchell married Idress Craig on 13 Feb 1798 in Wythe Co. Va. I have found an 1814 letter to Mitchell from a Frances Jackson Carter then living in Cooke Co. Tn. It mentions many other family's (Jackey Carter, Peggy Carter, Crocketts, McGavock's, James Calfee, Jenny Carter and family) but no direct relationships. Frances Jackson Carter married Esther Crockett in Wythe Co. Va. the same day that Mitchell Carter and Idress Craig married. Frances Jackson's father was a George Carter. There is also an 1815 court case in Wythe Co. Va. Mitchell Carter vs Frances Jackson Carter where Mitchell is trying to recover some money that he claimed Frances Jackson's father George owed him when he died. This court case doesn't state any family relationships though. If anyone has clues as to Mitchell Carter's parents please let me know.
Becky

Elsie, thanks for the information. I have an Elizabeth Jane Johnson (maybe Johnston) that is the wife of Michael Crager (Craiger, Cregger, Creiger, Crigger, etc). Michael is from Wythe County and I believe that his wife Elizabeth was as well. They were married around 1830. When I saw your Johnston family with daughters named Elizabeth and Jane I was hoping there was a match. I have tracked Elizabeth up to 1880 in Wise County VA. Michael Crager died around 1853, but Elizabeth did not remarry. My Elizabeth Jane Johnson (Johnston) was born around 1811. I have just been searching for some clue as to who her parents were and more information about the family of Michael Crager. Was hoping that if I could discover the parents of Elizabeth Jane Johnson, then perhaps I could narrow down the possible parents of Michael. Looks like neither your Elizabeth nor Jane are a match. Are you aware of any other Johnsons or Johnstons in Wythe County at that time that might be a match?

Yes, my information indicates Jane Johnston was born 26 Jan. 1800 in VA, md. ca 1826 Jacob DAVIS. She died betw. Dec. 5th and 8th 1868 and is buried in Davis Cemetery, Wytheville. Her marker says age 63, so birthdate may have been misread. It is rumored she was the mother of Abraham Johnston b. ca 1818 and blind in 1850 census living in Larkin Johnston's household. Abraham's paternity not known but I have heard from some of his descendants....Elizabeth Johnston was born ca 1825-27 in VA, md. Joseph WIATT 19 Jan. 1854. He was a farmer, and a widower. No further info about Elizabeth. Are you a descendant of Jane or Elizabeth? Can you identify Larkin Johnston's parents?

Hi Elsie,

I think my Davis' came from Virginia. According to our family we (my Davis') are of Irish descent. My Great Great Grandfather is Martin(a.k.a. Mark,Matt,Mart) Van Buren Davis b. between 1862-1865. He had one brother(that we know of) named Alex(Alexander) Davis b. between 1858-1860.

Martin married Martha Matilda Jones on May 9,1886 in Greeneville,Tennessee.

They had the following children:

Dora Belle b. Apr. 1888
Andrew
Jim (my Great Grandad) b. June 7, 1892
Charles
Horace "Pete"
Benjiman
Ann
Rhoda

Martin Had a Grandson named Ray Davis whose father was from Virginia either that or Ray was from Virginia.

My Grandad J.C.(Jim's son) Davis was described as "full blooded Irish."

My Davis family records of Wythe Co. VA do not show any Morris Davis nor any Joshua Davis b 1823 in TN. Our families might have been cousins of some degree but I see no connection. Suggest you try a History of Wythe Co. where some Davis clue might show up. Incidently, these Wythe Co. Davises have no connection with my name--Grandpa came from Ireland in 1850.

Larkin Johnston, born ca 1764-66 in NC came to Wythe Co. by the 1790's where he married Mary DAVIS, daughter of John and Mary. They had 10 children, David (my ancestor), Samuel H., Delilah, Jane, Urial, Jackson, James, Elizabeth, Lucinda, and Eliza. Does any descendant of one of these know Larkin's birthplace or parents? What happened to son Samuel H. Johnston? He was gone by 1820 census. Larkin and Mary lived to old age in Wytheville.
Hello Cousin,
My father was Adrain H. Haynes, son of Mack Haynes and Margaret Rodgers, son of Stephen Haynes and Loiusa Kirk, son of Dulaney Haynes and Emma Thompson, son of William Haynes and Polly(NLN).

There was a strong connection between the Rutherfords and the Haynes in Wythe County. Both Dulaney and his brother William went to Lee County and lived with a Rutherford boy and their family who were from Wythe County. I think they were the sons of Finney Rutherford. There was a marriage between the two families. Finney's wife was Ann(NLN). I have oftern wondered if either Ann was a Haynes or Polly was a Rutherford but can find no records???

I have told my sister that when I retire we are heading to Wythe County to research records in the court house!!!

Where does Charles fall in the Haynes line??

Do you want to see what I have collected on the family??

My email is users5215@aol.com

Your cousin,
Susan

Worth a phone call to Wythe Co. courthouse. Those early marriages are usually recorded in big ledgers chronologically, so it would be an easy lookup for a clerk, since you have an exact date and place. Very, very rarely were parents' names recorded before 1850, unless there was an under age person involved.

Try land and probate records - an estate or will would name heirs (in most cases, children), so lineage can be proved that way.

The Native American ancestor we are seeking was from Missouri and/or Virginia in the very early 1800s. Were there any Indian tribes who had kinky hair?
Winney/Blessing_Find the Missing Native American... and a photograph

I believe my family and I have gotten back to where a Native American came into the family but I have questions...

1.) First of all I am searching for a photo of my GGrandfather, William Henry Winney, b. 1843, Wisconsin. I believe his Grandmother or GGrandmother was the Indian. William Henry Winney's mother was Anna Eliza (Blessing) Winney (1826 VA - 1909 WI ). I have photos of a couple of William's siblings (who are dark) but would like to find a photo of my GGGrandfather to see what he looks like. I have a photo of Anna Eliza (Blessing) Winney but it was taken when she was very old and one can't really tell if she was anything but white. (Would anyone have a photo of Anna Eliza (Blessing) Winney when she was young?) I have a wedding photo of her grandaughter- my GGrandmother-- and she looks very pretty and rather olive complected. It is said that my Grandfather "preferred" my one aunt because she reminded him of his mother: with raven hair and olive-complected.

2.) There MIGHT be an Eliza Wolfe who is either Anna Eliza's mother or Grandmother who is the Indian. Eliza was born in either Missouri or West Virginia. She died in 1839, before the family moved from that area of the country to Wisconsin where her daughters got married in Grant County, WI.
Anna Eliza (Blessing) Winney's father was Abraham Blessing of Virginia, b. abt 1795. After he got his daughters settled in Grant Co., WI, he moved on to California where he died in the snowy mountains. Anna Eliza always said that those circumstances are exactly how she would like to die...

Thanks for any help.
Kathleen
LPurch6636@aol.com
