Hello:
I believe that the following is the same land grant you write of:

DAVID KINKEAD, 660a. NL. St. Marks Par., Spolsylvania Co.. in the Goard Line Fork; mouth of abr. of Kinkcad Run to Bessie Bell Mountain; Mary Gray Mountain. 1 Aug 1734.

This one might be another land grant?:
DAVID KINCADE. of St. Mark's Par.. Spotsylvania Co.. 400a. NL. in co. afsd.. in great fork of Rappahannock R.; N. side of the head of the branch of Devil's run. 20 Jun. 1733.

St. Mark's Parish:
Formed from St. George's Parish. When Orange Co was formed from Spotsylvania Co in 1734, St. Mark's Parish went too. After Culpeper Co was formed from Orange Co in 1748, it served both counties. In 1753, that part of St. Mark's Parish in Orange Co, was added to St. Thomas's Parish.

Finally!! I found Devil's Run in Culpepper Co., VA. It intersects with Hazel River. I backtraced Hazel River and it begins off the Rappahannock River. It also joins up with Thorton River which is in the vicinity of Bessie Bell Mountain. Hazel River pretty much stays in Culpepper Co. This looks like a prime possibility for where these Kincade land grants were. I'm pasting the link for the map so you can see Hazel River and Devil's Run. Devil's Run would be to the lower right of the map. I'm sure if you play around with it you can figure it out.

Here's the link:
http://www.mapquest.com/?q=38.53694,-78.11194

Hope this helps.
Leslyn Lang

Thanks so much for all the information. I really appreciate it. George Musick was the father of Elexious.
Elexious's son David Musick was the one who was murdered by Indians in 1892 in Russell CO, VA. David's family were taken as captives but rescued by neighbors who followed them. I have been to the place of the massacre a few times on Big A Highway in Russell County. I would love to go to the place where Plentiful Run used to be. Many thanks.

Karen

Hi:
So far what I have is a Plentiful Creek. It is located on the Belmont Topographic Map.

Click this link to take you to a list of streams/rivers:

http://virginia.hometownlocator.com/features/physical,class,...

Click on Plentiful Creek for a map.

Looking at the area it is sitting above Lake Anna. Places close to it would be Dan, Belmont. I guess a good place perhaps if you are shipping tobacco.

Not sure if you are associated with the following Musick family genealogy website:

http://www.mcclure-hopsonfamilyhistory.com/music.htm

It mentions your ancestor:

George, Sr., was granted 300 acres of land in Spotsylvania County VA on 8 September 1728 (probably from King George of England). The Musick Family Association history says the plantation was known as "Plentiful Run," and on it he grew and exported tobacco. The first roads to Plentiful Run were called "rolling roads" because they were designed to permit a tobacco grower to roll barrels of tobacco behind a mule to the wharf and warehouses on the river, for shipment to England. There were other land grants, indicating that George Musick was a man of means, a large landholder.

Apparently he was father the the infamous Elexious Musick whose family was taken captive by the Indians. The WPA Historical Inventory has a couple of items relating to the story about this.

Hope I've been able to narrow down your search area. I've not come across a plantation called Plentiful Run but you never know.
Leslyn Lang

Hi:
Depending on how old Lissie is, she may have gotten married and changed her last name. There are Garnetts in Caroline Co., Spotsy Co., & Stafford Co. Falmouth is in Stafford Co. I have posted a map of the historical plantations in Spotsy Co on the new website

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaspotsy/

You could check there to see if there is a Fleetwood plantation shown.

What is the relationship between the Bell family and the Garnett family. It would seem strange that Bell daughters would be allowed to move clear across the country with another family not related?

I'll check around to see what I can found out for you.
LL

I am a direct descendant of Francis White & Leah Durrett. There is documentation for her parents, but none that I have found for their marriage. Francis' original will is in the courthouse in Abbeville, SC. Their daughter was Judith Elizabeth Whiteb born 10 Oct 1783 in Virginia, died 1865 in Oak Grove, Marshall Co., MS. Her dauhghter Sarah Leah Eddins born 1802 in Abbeville Co., SC died 31 Aug 1881 in Woodruff Co., Ark. is my ggg grandmother. The Durretts were Huguenots. I'm going to try there next to document their marriage. I can't go any further with this line until their marriage is documented. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm looking for the marriage of Matilda Allsup to Warfield Coates, likely in Spotsylvania VA. Matilda was born in Maryland in about 1835. They had numerous children including Bettie Coates who married George McGoines and moved to Washington DC and Samuel Coates who died in the early 1900s in Fredericksburg VA. Any information would be appreciated about this family. They are believed to be of color based on their descendants.

Dear Gary,
No progress made here. In studying the Hicks of Spottsylvania Co. Va. I find the following

a James Hicks b. ca 1750, who is said to be a father of Thomas S. Hicks b. 1771, Thomas married to Lucy Alsop. (Elizabeth Pendleton's mother was an Alsop....)

James is said by one rootsweb contributor to have married a second time to Elizabeth Harris, (sister to Thomas's mother Mary Harris) but no children are given.

The 1790 & 1800 tax lists of Spotsylvania Co. show only a
Peter Hicks. Most researchers are giving his date of birth as 1769, which I believe would be a little too young to be a father of our Joseph Hicks.

Lastly the 1810 census lists of Spotsylvania reflect the following;

1810 Virginia Census Index Hicks
Joseph Spotsylvania
00100-10100-01

Andrew Spotsylvania
00110-00100-01

Peter Spotsylvania
31210-21010-01

Thomas Spotsylvania
23020-31010-09

I wish I had a definitive answer, but I do not....

Sincerely,
Vicki Piper

Catherine Long - b 1829 Spotsylvania

Seeking any information with regards to Catherine Long - b 12 October 1829, Spotsylvania, VA.
This information was found in the Civil War Pension record for her husband, John Ritchie.
The birth date was also confirmed in the bible of her youngest brother, Jasper Newton Long.
We know that Catherine Long b 1829 is the daughter of Thomas D Long and Mary Bond, who married 8 July 1822, Louisa Co, VA.
children
Eliza Ann b 19 June 1823
Richard H - b 05 August 1825
( according to his Civil War enlistment papers born in Orange Co, VA)
Mary Jane Long - b 15 November 1827
Catherine b - 12 October 1829, Spotsylvania, VA
John Thomas Long b 28 August 1831 - VA
=========
We know that sometime between 1831 and 1833 -
Thomas D Long and Mary Bond moved to KY.
Confirmed that they lived in Warren Co, KY in 1837 by the marriage of their oldest daughter, Eliza Ann.
Then by marriage of son Richard H in 1844, Warren Co, KY.
==============

Based on the fact that Thomas D Long and Mary Bond married in Louisa Co, VA - they may have stayed in that area, although no record has been found or they may have gone to wherever Thomas D Long was from.
I am assuming at this time, with 2 children born in Orange and Spotsylvania, that they stayed in that area. Perhaps with family members of Thomas D Long's, but, we have been unable to determine Thomas's parentage or any siblings.
I am also guessing that with 5 children in tow, moving from VA to KY was not an easy move for the family and am assuming that they went to where there was family.
We have recently done a dna test on the ftdna site on the Long dna surname project and it appears that it takes us back somewhere toward Brumfield Long, - but no records have shown just how.
If anyone can assist with this I would be extremely grateful.
Please feel free to email me direct < rplong@comcast.net >

Mr. Todd and McCoy or Coyle near Fall Hill?

Does anyone know of a Todd and a MCCoy or Coyle living near the "Fall Hill" property in the mid to late 1700's. There are two house symbols on a 1779 map of the Fall Hill area that appear to read Mr. Todd and Mr. McCoy?

Dr. John Newton Garnett

In a letter dated Jan 1860, the writer, living in Falmouth, VA, states "...poor Lissie has to go as a teacher in Dr. GARNETTE's family..."
Lissie would have been the daughter of Alexander and Virginia (KIGER) BELL.
Alexander BELL, born 1799, and Virginia KIGER, born 1815, Stafford Co., VA, were married in 1835, Falmouth, Stafford Co., VA.
In 1839 they were living in Culpeper Co., VA, in their home "Fleetwood."
By 1850 they are on the Eastern District, Spotsylvania Co., VA, census:
BEALE, Alexander, 51, farmer, $2,000 real estate, VA
", Virginia, 35, VA
“, Alex, 11, VA
“, Hester E., 9, VA
“, Robt H., 2, VA
Perhaps Lissie is a nickname for Elizabeth, and perhaps the E. after Hester stands for Elizabeth. I can find a Dr. Garnett and his family in Culpeper Co. in 1850 and then 1860, 1870, and 1880 in Missouri.
I can't find Hester E. 'Lissie' BELL after 1850. It seems feasible to me that she did indeed go with Dr. Garnette's family to MO b/c her younger sister ended up marrying someone from Kansas City, MO.
Does anyone familiar with this Dr. Garnett have any clues as to what happened to Hester 'Lissie' BELL?

Jeremiah Stevens born abt 1708 VA

I am looking for any and all information on Jeremiah Stevens, born abt 1708 in either Gloucester or Spotsylvania VA. He is the Father of John and James Stevens who were sent to live with Henry Johnson (or Johnston)in 1773. I am particularly interested in what happened to his two youngest boys when they grew up. I think his son is the same James Stevens who married Mary Bird Goodloe. If so I would also greatly appreciate any information on them as well.
