Rachel and Nancy POWERS

I am seeking information on Rachel and Nancy Powers of Smyth County.

In the 1850 census of Smyth County, Nancy Powers, age 30 is head of household. Living in the home are also, Catherine (Caroline), 13, Jane, 8, Rachel, 25, and George M.D. Bennett, 5.

The 1860 census shows that Nancy is still the head of the household. She is now 42 and Jane, age 18, a new daughter Matilda, age 2 are in the home. George, age 16 is listed both in Nancy's home and also in the home of Joseph Creger and his older sister, Mary C. George is an apprentice to Joseph in his blacksmith shop. (Mary C. is Catherine/Caroline previously found in Nancy's 1850 home).
George is now using the POWERS name.

Rachel Powers is now found in Wythe County with her young son, William COOK, age 2.

By 1870, Nancy, Joseph (and Caroline), and Rachel have all brought their families to Fayette County, WV. Rachel's son, Willism has also taken the POWERS name.

I would like to know what the relationship was between Nancy and Rachel. I would also like to know if the children who both Nancy and Rachel raised were their children or did they take them in to raise as their own? In the 1850 census, when George is listed as a BENNETT, there is a family by the same name on the same page of the census. Sally, 40, Susan, 13, Mary, 10 and Catherine, 32. Could George have been the son of Sally Bennett? Or was his father's name Bennett?

When Rachel's son, William Powers marries in Fayette County, he gives his parents names as John and Rachel Powers. So, who is John?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Anita McClung
Fayette County, WV

Elmer,

Are you a descendant of George MD Powers? I am a 2nd great granddaughter of George Michael Dallas Powers and Martha Jane Paxton. I would like to know if anyone has discovered anymore on George such as his father's name. According to the census records, Nancy Powers was his mother, but I am not so sure. I have information on George and Martha's children, as well as cemetery information for several of them if you are interested.

Anita McClung
Fayette County, WV

Hi,

I am Shelby, daughter of Charlie Rolen who was the son of Alonzo Grip Rolen of Smyth County. Alonzo had a brother William about 3 years younger than he and a sister that I don't know anything more about. I had heard that someone thought that Alonzo's mother was Kitty. I found a Kitty Rolen married to a James Rolen who had a child named Tampie who died about 1890 in Smyth county. That particular James may have been the son of an earlier James Rolen born in 1825. His father was a William Rolen.

Alonzo named his first son James Earl. His brother was William possibly named after the elder William Rolen. The 1919 service registration for Alonzo states the he is responsible for his younger brother and sister. It sounds like there might be the connection I have looked for someone to confirm.

I saw where you had posted a small bit about Alonzo several years back and wondered if you would know anyone that might confirm the possible information I have pieced together.

Thanks for any possible info you could share.

Sent from my iPad
I am a descendant of Mary Wlson's 2nd husband, Sydney Adams. My grandfather never knew the names of his natural mother, but believed Adams was his natural father. My mom has done a FF DNA test and Wilson and adams family names are prominent in her results. Only one catch; i know Mary Wilson was not my grandfather's mother. That leads me to wonder if he might have been the child of a sib or cousin, someone who would share close DNA.
If any of this sounds familiar please contact me.
Thanks!
My grandfather's Uncle Sylvester Sprinkle was a miller and furniture-maker whose mill was located behind Mt. Carmel Methodist Church. All three of his wives were Killinger's. The third, Aunt Ad, moved with Uncle Syl to Belton Missouri after 1880. They are buried there.
Uncle Syl took in Sarah Killinger Sprinkle and her family after the death of his nephew William I. in 1863. She then married Stephen Scott, who worked at the mill and took it over when Uncle Syl left (hence Scott's Mill, which was the old Sprinkle Mill).

First, I rechecked the 1860 census for Charles and his family. I think that the daughter you have as Angeline is actually Emaline.

From the 1864 Whitfield Co,Ga militia Records:
Chas Moore, 46, farmer, born Smith County VA, exempted: diseased throat
J L Moore, 16 years 6 months, farmer, born Smith Co VA, rifle

So this is probably Charles' widow.
1870 Whitfield Co., GA
Mary L. Moore 24 VA
Martha 24 GA

This couple may be the J. A. Moore and M. A. Carpenter that married 16 Sep 1869 in Whitfield Co., GA)

1880 Whitfield Co., GA
James A 34 VA
Cora B. 9
Oscar A. 8
Mary C. 6
Ida W. 5
Marvin 3
Earnest Y. 1

1900 Kaufman TX
James A. However, it would not surprise me if the two brothers moved out west together. The marriages also fit. Both men were from VA and both married wives from GA. Also notice that Albert has named his children, Mary and Charles and Sally and William. All of those names match those of his parents and two of his siblings.

I am pretty confident about Mary and James in Whitfield Co., GA not so
much about Albert S. in Indian Territory.

Hope this helps.

Good luck
Sandra (not related)

Sorry about that. Because his date of birth do you know if he served in the Civil war? If he did there might be a pension. Some of the confederate pensions are online for Virginia. It is a little weired that he is not with his family in 1870. You might have to go to the Court house and see what records they have. I would look for probate records.

I am looking for my 3x great grandfather, Samuel Joseph Wilson. I have been at a brick wall with him for over 20 years. His parents were John Wilson and Elizabeth Jenny Todd. He was born in NC in 1835 and married Mary Elizabeth Burkett, of Smyth Co, in 1858.

I have him on a 1860 census with his wife and firstborn son, William Dunlap, living in Washington Co, VA. I have found an 1870 census with his wife and 4 of his children but he in not listed. The census shows them living in Rich Valley, Smyth, Va. Post office is listed as Chatham Hill.

I thought at first he had died but I show he had a son in 1874. From what I can tell, he died in 1874.

Why is he not listed with the rest of his family and how can I go about finding him? I thought I had a mystery before, but this just added to it. I am desparate for any help at this point.

I would also like to locate his obit if possible

thanks in advance for your time
Sandy venezia@suddenlink.net

Hockett came to Washington Co Va before 1804 - likely from Buckingham Co VA. He married there Catherine McNew, d/o Elisha McNew & Catherine Smyth/Smith; and Thomas Henderson & family arrived in NYC cFeb 1820 and were soon thereafter in Washington Co; they came from Kincardine, Scotland.
Hi, I also have a copy of that envelope. I got it from another Gore researcher named Laurie Austin. Have you corresponded with her? So far, I have found nothing to indicate that my Riley O Bryant is the same person as the Riley O Bryant Gore on the envelope. It certainly could be possible, as he was 45 years old before he married my ancestor, Camilla Isabel Mantz. I wish I could find more on him, but so far nothing. Thanks for writing.
I have a copy of a envelope wrote by Hershel Columbus Gore which states the father of John Franklin Gore is Riley O Bryant Gore. Im not sure if he was a Gore or if he was just Riley O Bryant. Mary Mullins was married to a Pierce Gore so her name was Mary Gore. Pierce then passed a way and John Franklin Gore was born after Pierce's death Pierce was not the father of John Franklin Gore. I dont think that Riley O Bryant and Mary were married but i do think they had a child together.

Hello,

I'm stuck. I've been looking for mulatto (or black) people in the area of Marion, Smyth county.

I am looking for the marriage of Florence Billingsby (maiden), the death of Lucy (Billingsby) Millard and the marriage of Mary Billingsby (maiden).

Lucy Billingsby appears on the 1870 Census. She is the head of the household. In home is Mary (4 years old) and Adeline (1 year old).

On the 1880 Census Lucy Billingsby is now married to Benjamin Millard and living in Goodson (Washington County). Addeline (Addie) no longer appears in home. Mary is still in home. There is a new resident, Florence Billingsby (sister of Lucy).

I am able to track Addie pretty much to marriage and death. However, I can not account for Lucy, Florence or Mary after this 1880 Census.

Is anyone familiar with this name? Can you tell me where I should look? I'm stuck and don't know where to look further. Thank you in advance for the help

Mr. & Mrs. McPhatridge or McFatridge of Washington or Smyth Counties Virginia - Thomas Woolsey's daughter Dean -

Revolutionary Pension papers of MARTHA (THOMAS) HARRIS on her husband's Revolutionary war service has one document which talks of a Mr. MCPHATRIDGE - might be spelled now MCFATRIDGE - anyway the wife of this Mr. MCPHATRIDGE was the sister to JOHN HARRIS. JOHN HARRIS b. 1760 North Carolina and died 18 August 1816 near Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky. JOHN HARRIS & MARTHA THOMAS were married 31 October 1781 in St Clair's - Sinclair's Bottom, Washington County, Virginia. - Anyway the Pension Letter was written from Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia and in the letter it states that this Mr. & Mrs. MCPHATRIDGE lived 18 miles away which might be Smyth County, Virginia? Chilhowie, Smyth County, Virginia is 19 miles from Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. Again the Pension Letter was written from Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. Both Mr. & Mrs. MCPHATRIDGE, were very elderly, still living in 1854 except Mrs. MCPHATRIDGE mind was going. JOHN HARRIS & MARTAH (THOMAS) HARRIS lived in Washington, (now Smyth County, Virginia), from their marriage, (1781) to (1789), and then move to Garrard County, Kentucky. Am bringing up the fact that a Mr. & Mrs. MCPHATRIDGE lived 18 miles from Adingdon, Washington County, Virginia when the Pension Letter was written on April 21, 1854, and that the wife of Mr. MCPHATRIDGE or MCFATRIDGE was the sister to JOHN HARRIS. Letter also talks of THOMAS WOOLSEY who married MARTHA THOMAS to JOHN HARRIS and that THOMAS WOOLSEY had a daughter by the name of DEAN and another daughter who took the book he kept his marriages in - to Missouri. - NEED INFORMATION ON MR. & MRS. ____? (HARRIS) MCPHATRIDGE, probably of Chilhowie, Smyth County, Virginia. Thanks - Don Martin Thomas
Seeking Family Bible of John Thomas b. - 1733 - Lived - St. Clair's Bottom, Virginia

!NOTE: The Thomas Family History Organization must of had access to the cover page of our [South Fork of the Holston River] John Thomas' Family Bible? We have birth dates for all of Mary (Robinett) Thomas' children - including Sarah Thomas and Mary Thomas, who we know nothing about. Uncle Harry Delbert Thomas stated that he had some documentation records but they were in his brief case and he put the brief case on top of his car, (forgot about the brief case on top of the car), and drove off. He said he never saw the brief case again. The Thomas Family History Organization was mostly Thomas family members living in Colorado and Utah, (maybe some from Virginia). Actually the Thomas Family History Organization was mostly Great Uncle Harry Delbert Thomas. I think I remember him saying he went back to Virginia two, if not several times? - Again since we have all the birth dates of their children, (even those children we know nothing about) there must be a Bible record out there? - Would just like a copy of the Birth - Death dates - I am appealing to all Thomas family members - Need a copy of all documentation records, (Bible - Birth - Death Records - etc), so that we can do research on our Thomas Family - Of recent we have documented our [South Fork of the Holston River] John Thomas & Mary (Robinett) Thomas to Loudoun County, Virginia (1767 - 1768) and their being Baptized into the New Valley Baptist Church of Lucketts, Cameron Parish, Loudoun County, Virginia. The following is a link to the Research of our [South Fork of the Holston River] John Thomas. - Thanks - Don Martin Thomas

Here is a link to John Thomas b. 1733 at www.rootsweb.com

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Here is a link to John Thomas b. 1733 at ancestry.com - just e-mail me at donmartinthomas@hotmail.com and I will send you a guest pass to ancestry.com so you can view the research if you are not a member of ancestry.com -

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12264403/person/-300817901
