Perhaps a historian could chime in on this question. However, the local telephone directory DOES show a number of people with the surname Grace, so it's quite possible that Grace Street was named after one of their ancestors.

We are Ament, came to New York in the late 1600's from The Nederlands, migrated from there to Kentucky, then ended up in Illinois. The family went to Illinois in 1832 one of John's son arrived there before in about 1830. I have exhausted my search in Illinois but can not find anything on John Viele before he went to Kentucky and not sure if he died there or somewhere else. Thanks for the reply even if I was looking for the Higgs family and messed up on the first post.

I used DNA Diagnostics Center at www.ancestrybydna.com. They broke down the ancestry results by European, Indigenous American, Sub-Saharan African, and East Asian. They analyzed the 22 pairs of non-sex chromosomes. I believe that all of my Native American ancestry is from my mother. A cousin on my father's side had a DNA test which showed no Native American ancestry. My mother's family lived in the McGaheysville, VA area.

There were predominantly Shawnee and Delaware Indians in the Valley on a regular basis throughout the late 1750s as evidenced by accounts of massacres in Pendleton Co., WV during the period. Since the Great Valley was a neutral hunting ground there were many southern tribes who visited: chiefly the Catawba and Cherokee.
I would like to know more about the agency that performed your testing. I had testing done through FamilyTree DNA but they claim they can only tell Native heritage through either all males or all females. My native heritage would date back to the 1750s or earlier.
my email is mandsdietz@hotmail.com
thanks, s

Found Jacob in listed on tax records in Rockingham County for the years 1809-1811. Others with his surname (on other records) are William from 1802, 1803, 1809, 1810 and 1811. Also a Virgil Welchon is mentioned in a book located in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society.

I saw that a Jacob Pence is noted as the bondsman on Jacob and Caty's marriage record ... the bondsman was usually the brides father, brother or uncle.

Interesting to see all the various spellings to Jacob's Welshans... including Welchauns, Welchon, Welchoner, Welchones Welchonts and Wishauntgs ...

Hope this gives you some kind of lead. Best of luck.
Margaret

Daniel McCartney/Sarah Price

Hi! I descend from Daniel McCartney, born on January 15, 1768 in Rockingham County, Virginia. He married Sarah "Sally" Price, born on January 15, 1773 in Virginia. They were married in Rockingham County on April 7, 1795. The information that I have states that she was the daughter of David Price. They moved to Ohio sometime, about 1800 or 1801. Daniel settled in Lawrence County, Ohio in about 1807 and was there until about 1834. At that point, most of the McCartney family moved to Vermillion County, Indiana and then moved on to Coles County, Illinois about 1837. Daniel is believed to have died in 1847 in Cumberland County, Illinois, which was carved out of Coles County.

I would love to connect with anyone else from this family and to know who Daniel's parents and Sarah Price's parents were.

The children of Daniel McCartney and Sarah (Price) McCartney are believed to have married into the following families of Southern Ohio: Shute, Davidson, Warren, Stewart, Powell, Ingles, Drury..

Thanks! - Jean Griesan -> griesantomjean@msn.com

According to copies of the documents that I have, the marriage license was given on 29 October 1861 and the wedding took place on 30 October 1861. The written permission for Peter to marry his daughter was signed by Mary Ann's father Rezin Bryan on 26 October 1861.

I'm looking for info on the infamous JOHN DAVIS, who, while in the army of the Revelution was a "double spy". He was involved with the CLAYPOOL REBELLION, and he and his brothers were arrested for treason.
They were sentcnced to hang, but John escaped.
His brothers were released after being retained for matter of weeks.
No one knew what happened to John, and if they did, they weren't telling anyone. (Yes I heard the story of the wolves killing him, but my gut tells me to ignore it)
His daughter Elizabeth married Martin Luther CARR in 1792, and the went on to FAYETTE CO. OH.
John was my 4x great grandfather.

The time period I am most interested in would be 1778 to about 1788.

Family name is LAM, but spelled occasionally also as LAMB and LAMME.

Thanks for the help. Dave Lam

Happy to help and glad it has provided food for thought. I suggest you view the filmed records themselves, however. You should be able to borrow them through your local LDS branch library. Of course if you live in or will be visiting Utah in the near future, you can read the film in the library in Salt Lake City.

Cathy

Cathy,

Thanks very much for providing this information. This is a very interesting answer to my query. This Benjamin HENKLE appears to be the same man as the Benjamin who was a brother of Paul HENKEL (b. 1754, Rowan Co., NC), the renowned minister. Rev. HENKEL was an associate of the ROUSH family, so this isn't surprising.

Unfortunately, there are two possibilities for the John ROUSCH in this estate record: the John ROUSH who was a son of Johannes RAUSCH (1711-1786) or the John ROUSH (1766-1854) who was a grandson of Johannes RAUSCH (1711-1786). The grandson had a wife named Maria Magdalene (surname unknown) and that is the family that I was looking for. Benjamin and Paul HENKEL did have a sister named Magdalena but she was known as Magdalena Landis HENKEL, no Maria on the front. Also, if John ROUSCH was Benjamin's brother-in-law, you would expect that this would be mentioned in the estate records.

All things considered, this is an important new lead for this family. I have had correspondence with a couple of descendants of John ROUSH (1766-1854) and I will alert them to this. Thanks for your help.

Jerry,
If it is Mary Ann, it is very possible she was hiding her true identity because she may not have known that Peter became legally divorced two years after she ran off with Wilhite.

It could have been financial. Ive seen a number of cases of this happening where childeren are living in different househoolds as they get older. Usually its in a family household or a household close by that are friends of the family. Sometimes the children are listed as servents. We are not talking about a very affluent area back then. While there were some wealthy people in the area, most were farmers and laborers, some listed as day laborers. I assume that farming out thew kids was a necessity for feeding and taking care of them.

Am I by any chance replying to Von R/ Kansas? Is your great
grandmother Flora Porter, married to David L Claytor in Iowa?
My grandfather Jacob Paul Claytor had twin sisters, Ina and
Iva.... I have been able to go as far as Samuel Claytor
who married Susan (Susannah) Culp, VA/// My sources say
that Samuel's father Thomas Claytor witnessed the marriage
along with Susan's father Henry Culp. His wife, Frances Funk.
Please respond, if you like. We lost track in 1995.... and
I can't seem to locate you. If you have forgotten, I am the
niece of Ned Claytor, who brought you and I together.

Regards, Cousin Catherine

Oh yes, I can account for Bessie every year on the census as a child and with her first husband and children and later with another husband and some grandchildren in the household. Any "relationship" she had with someone named Branner was very short term and in between census years. The child she had , Herbert Junior Branner, only lived approx. 7 weeks and that is the document where she signed her name as Bessie Branner. That is the only record we have with that name, along with her listing the child's birth and death in the family Bible. My grandmother, Bessie's daughter, never knew her mother to be in a relationship with someone by the name Branner.

If you have access to Ancestry.com at home or a library, search for any Bessie born about the right time and living in the county and state where you think they lived. Spelling of given and surnames was often wrong. Do you know her maiden name, year of birth, and state? You can use the same technique for siblings, spouses, and children.

Hi Jerry. I just googled Library of Virginia and Chancery and it brought up the Chancery Index. There are three links. One is FAQ and another is Search. Selecting Search brings up a page where you select the county and can put in names of Plaintiffs and names of Defendants plus surnames of others involved. I put Wheeler in plaintiff and the file came up with the first image in a window. There are Previous and Next buttons to navigate thbrough the images of the files pages

Yes, thought that was somewhat strange, however, the birth place of her husband and two older children was Virginia.
Still many questions, why were the two youngest children farmed out by 1880? Anna and Lucy are very close in age, could this be a reason she left? What happened to the rest of the family?
This is not my family, but did years of searching for a family member such as this case and finally found her.

There is an Ohio birth record for John William Wilhite, born 15 Apr 1869 in Muskingum County, son of R. Wilhite and Ann Younger. Since the 1870 census lists the parents as Reuben Willhitte and Mary, it's pretty safe to assume that the mother was named Mary Ann. The question would then become whether Mary Ann Younger was some kind of alias for Mary Ann Bryan. I'm somewhat bothered by the fact that Mary Willhitte's birthplace in the 1870 census was listed as Ohio rather than as Virginia as it should have been for Mary Ann Bryan. But that could have been part of the aliasing process.

Jerry Bryan
