I recently emailed the Prince William's county library RELIC department inquiring about the family of my GG grandfather Albert Franklin Corun born around 1842. I want to share this with everyone, I believe this information is important to clear up our confusion and give us all a more accurate time line:
From the 1900 U.S. Census, someone in the household told the census taker that Albert F. CORUM was born January 1840. His second marriage indicates that he was born around 1841.
The information given on his second marriage is:
Albert F. CORUM, age 48, widower, was born and living in Fauquier County, Va., occupation, carpenter, parents William and Frances CORUM married on 24 April 1889 to Laura F. JEFFRIES, age 25 years old, single, born and living in Fauquier County, Va., mother Margaret Jeffries.
You have indicated that his mother was Amanda GROVES but I believe this to be his step-mother. The marriage record of William CORUM to Ellen Amanda GROVES, daughter of William R. GROVES, occurred on 9 April 1844 in Fauquier County, Va. [Fauquier County, Virginia Marriage Bonds: 1759-1854 and Marriage Returns: 1785-1848 by John K. Gott (1989), p.41]. Since Albert is born in 1840/41, it is my theory that William was a widower when he married Ellen Amanda, although I cannot find any record of his first marriage.
In the 1850 U.S. Census William and his wife, Ellen A.[manda], are living in Turner’s District, Fauquier County, with their two children, George C., age 3, and Charles W., age 1. Albert is not living with them at this time. I am unable to locate him in the 1850 census but perhaps he is living with a grandparent?
In the 1860 U.S. Census, Albert is out on his own living in Buckland, Prince William County, Va. which lies on the Fauquier/Prince William County line. He is working as a miller there.
In the 1870 census, he is married, age 28, occupation carpenter, living in Gainesville District, Prince William County, Va. (which is close to Fauquier County). In the house is his wife Jane, age 23, daughter Sarah, age 3 and his mother-in-law Lydia BEACH, age 50.
Jane died 9 Jan 1887 near New Baltimore, Fauquier County (close to the Prince William County/Fauquier border). Her death record gives her name as Jane C. CORUM, died of consumption, age at death 43 years & 5 months, born in Faquier County, Va., consort of A. F. CORUM, parents Francis & Lena BURCH, death reported by her husband, Page 126, Line 8 [Death Registry, Fauquier County, Virginia, 1853-1896 by Dee Ann Buck (1999), p.38].
Albert F. CORUM and his first wife, Jane BEACH/BACH/BURCH had the following children:
1) Sarah, age 3 in 1870 census, born about 1867, age 14 in 1880 census.
2) Amanda V. born 13 Jun 1869 in Prince William County. Died 13 Dec 1869, age 6 months. (I’m guessing he named her after his step-mother) [Ron Turner’s Birth Records, 1853-1896]
3) Mary W., born 22 Feb 1873, Buckland, PWC [Turner’s Birth Records] age 7 in 1880 census.
4) William E., age 10 in 1880 census
4) Charles E. born 1 Aug 1876, PWC [Turner’s Birth Records], in 1880 census age 4
5) Charles E. born Jul 1879, PWC [Turner’s Birth Records]
6) George C. age 11 months in 1880 census. Believe this is the child above born in Jul 1879 named Charles E.
Albert F. CORUM and his second wife, Laura F. , had the following children:
1) Raymond born July 1888 (from 1900 census)
2) Joseph born Aug 1890 (from 1900 census)
3) Franklin born Mar 1892 (from 1900 census)
4) Hugh born May 1894 (from 1900 census)
5) Ashley born May 1895 (from 1900 census)
6) Wallace born Nov 1896 (from 1900 census)
7) Douglas born Sept 1899 (from 1900 census)
8) Edna M. born about 1909 (from 1920 census)
I’m not sure when Albert died but Laura is listed as a widow in 1920. Laura is still alive in the 1930 census, age 67.
