Does anybody know where the Buffalo River (Creek) is today south of Hampton-Syndney College south of Farmville, VA in Prince Edward County?
My ancestor Baker had property on both sides of the Buffalo River and nearby Spring Creek, near Darlington Heights Rd and Abiline Rd in Prince Edward County. I know he lived on the river but I can't find the river on Google Maps. Perhaps the river isn't as large as it used to be. An 1820 Map of the Country shows a Canal alongside the river. Anybody have a clue?
Jan Swart

Was that in a history of Prince Edward Co, VA?
I'm interested in knowing how Rice got its name,
too. The William Rice you referred to was the son
of Matthew Rice, my 5 X GG. He administered on
his father's will. Afterwards, he moved to KY with
some of the Burkes family (of Burkes Old Tavern).
Matthew's will speaks of his plantation on the SAndy
River, so it must have been at the location of Rice.
Two of Richard Burkes' sons married daughters of Matthew
Rice--my 4 X GG Charles Burks married Sarah Rice. His
brother Thompson Burks married Anna Catharine Rice.
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has a Ned or Hannah Brown, who later changed their last name to Pinchern/Pinchum, in their tree. Don't want to be too generic but thats the only thing I can think of. I've found a 1900 census for them and then a 1910 with a different last name. They lived in Lockett.

Several of their sons, Elijah, Walter and Robert moved to Maryland (Baltimore and Cecil Counties)as early as the 1930s.

Willie's aunt, Louisa Lyle, married John T. Early. John T. Early was born around 1849 in Bedford County. This couple lived in the Hampden area.

This family is African-American.

Obituary for Theodoric Archibald MCROBERT. It lists his marriage date as 12 Aug 1824; the Alabama marriage records scanned into the internet show the marriage date as 11 Aug 1824, Madison County, Alabama.

McRobert, (Theodoric) Archibald obituary, Enquirer, Richmond, Virginia, 16 Oct 1824, Vol. XXI, Issue 48, page 3
Enquirer. Richmond, Virginia, 16 Oct 1824

Actual text
"Communicated
DIED - At Athens, Alabama, on the 7th (illegible), after an illness of eight days, Col. ARCHIBALD MCROBERT, son of Theodorick B. McRobert, late of Prince Edward county, Virginia.

Col. Archibald McRobert removed to Alabama in the summer of 1819, his honorable and exemplary conduct even secured him the good will and esteem of the most numerous and most respectable of the community. This appears from his being elected by large majorities to offices of high trust in the county in which he resided. He was married on the 12th of Aug last to Miss Maria Blackbourne, whom a gentleman from that county describes as, 'a girl of high respectability and good parentage.'

From a letter written by the Rev. Daniel P. Bestor to the mother of the deceased, we make the following extract, which we doubt not, will prove highly consoling to his numerous friends and connexions in this state - 'On being asked if he was afraid to die, he answered, 'all of us are afraid to die.' I questioned him relative to his belief in Jesus, and he assured me that he did believe in him. On being questioned further he told us that he had a hope of happiness after death. About ten o'clock we thought he was dying. Both he and his wife requested me to pray. Immediately after prayer his countenance seemed more than usually lightened up with expression and joy. He then took hold of his wife and said, 'I'm happy.' I asked him again if he was afraid to die? He answered - 'No.' He then expressed a lively hope of happiness beyond this world.' The letter concludes with the following information - 'I preached his funeral sermon in the court house to a large and attentive audience.'
Col. M. was about 27 years of age. In his death Society has lost both a useful and ornamental member. In his disposition he was tender and affectionate. In his principles he was honourable and disinterested. Long shall it be ere his memory sleeps- Long ere his name be forgotten, or his virtue obilterated."
I am looking through my information and will give some details that might be helpful others as well as Katie and Lundy so will post here.

The family Bible was left to Elizabeth MCROBERT, daughter of Rev. Archibald MCROBERT. She married Samuel CARTER 1 Jan 1798. I will have to go through more papers to see if I have anything on this CARTER line.

I am also going to check out the comments regarding a brother named Alexander as that information is not in my database. I have seen some information indicating there was an Alexander MCROBERTS who was in the same area as our ancestor.

Jeanne

I am re-reading the posts and I see that Lundy has Elizabeth Venable MCROBERT, who married Rev. Daniel S. BAKER D.D. listed as the daughter of Rev. Archibald MCROBERT. She was his granddaughter. Elizabeth was the daughter of Theodorick Bland MCROBERT and and Agnes Woodson MORTON.
What a wonderful Christmas gift to find not one, but two 'new' cousins!

I have no information on either Jane Ayres Baker Philips nor on Geoffrey Baker, her brother, other than their birth dates and the fact they were siblings of my grandfather, Albert Lundy Baker. I have one far-off picture of Albert Lundy Baker and Geoffrey Baker on horses in the Grand Canyon and that's it. I think I may have found Geoffrey's daughter-in-law, Nancy Clowes Baker, but so far, there's been no response to the email I sent her.

Many thanks for clearing up some of the William Munford - Daniel Baker confusion. I am still wondering why Daniel Baker Baker's middle name was 'Baker'...

Can you give me your lineage so I can add you to what I have?

How do we exchange family trees, pictures, documents, and other info on this website? Or does this evolve into an email type of conversation?

And yes, you both are right - there's seems to be one 'caretaker' each generation. My problem is the more I know, the more questions I have!

Merry Christmas Cuz's!

Lundy

PS I live in northern Virginia - either of you close by?

Katie-I don't have too many CARTER's in my database. However I do see them connected to the MCROBERT line as well as the LIGON line. The LIGON line connects to the WOODSON line which is well documented. The WOODSON line, of course, connects with the MCROBERT line.

I have cousins that are interested in genealogy also. My grandmother shared with us, from the time we were little, and it soon becomes apparent which children are really interested and which ones aren't. Those of us who are become the keepers of the history for the generations that follow.

Missouri is definitely in the family tree, though!

Jeanne

Hello, Jeanne! Someone in my ancestry of my Grandfather Philips' line must also have been a geneologist, as I have a well-prepared pedigree in ink on vellum, with lines backwards from his generation. I seem to be the only one of my many siblings interested in our history and I very much appreciate your information on my grandmother's McRobert/Baker lines.

My father was a Carter. I've traced his line back to the Southeast, with Carters in Alabama and Missouri. Perhaps our lines crossed in Missouri, as well...

Katie

Katie,
In seeing your reply I see that I have neglected to sign my posts. My name is Jeanne.

It is so nice to meet cousins in this line!

I do not have some of the lineage down to you so am pleased to get this information as well as meet both of you. My information on the BAKER-LUNDY line (which I had spelled LUNDAY) stopped at their three children.

Jeanne

Lundy -- Cousins, you and I and, it appears by several posts in response to yours, Morrie77 is a cousin, as well. The two of you have illuminated many mysteries in my family tree. I had always suspected that Susan John Hartman might be a cousin of Rev. William Munford Baker, as marriage was more common among cousins in that time -- especially among small populations -- but not so close a cousin as she.

As you may know, Cordelia Mercy Lundy Baker was the daughter of Jane Susan Ayres Lundy, and cousin to Cordelia Louise Benet and Eleanor Van Vansickle Benet, both childless. Eleanor died in the 1940s and left many family heirlooms of our Derby/Ayres/Lundy line with my grandmother, Jane Ayres Baker Philips. They are now with me. They include belongings of Cordelia Derby Ayres, our 3-greats grandmother. My mother was Cordelia LUNDY Philips!

Thank you for this connection and for all the information. I hope we'll continue to share.

Katie

I just re-read the post about a half-brother and see what the writer meant. The use of pronouns can get confusing (not a criticism of the writer; simply of the reading). I believe what was meant was that Rev. Daniel S. BAKER, D.D. (1791-1857) and Rev. Joseph Stevens BAKER (1798-unknown) were half brothers. This relationship is correct. Rev. Daniel S. Baker, D.D. was the son of Second Deacon William BAKER,Jr. and his first wife, Elizabeth (Mary) DUNHAM. Reve. Joseph Stevens BAKER was the son of Second Deacon William BAKER, Jr. and his third wife, Ann STEVENS. Second Deacon William BAKER, Jr. had only one child with his second wife, Mrs. Susanna HORNSBY (I do not have her maiden name). That child was Thomas BAKER. Susanna died 25 Mar 1795; just two months after giving birth to Thomas (30 Jan 1795).

I forgot to mention the court record on the death of Rev. Archibald MCROBERT's grandson, Archibald MCROBERT (who I have listed as Theodoric Archibald MCROBERT: "Court record: Departed this life on the 7th of this instant (Sept 10, 1824) Archibald McRobert, late clerk of the county court. Robert Austin appointed in his place. Sept 17 has Archibald McRobert died intestate. Maria McRobert his widow, relinquishes her right to administrate. (The estate was not enough to cover creditors and the administrator was ordered to sell slaves as soon as they came into his possession."

The record was input on the 10th; he died on the 7th.
Lundy- You and I are cousins! Rev. Archibald MCROBERT is my 5th great-grandfather. My great-grandmother was a BAKER in this line and I have never heard of a half sibling either. My grandmother (whose mother was the Baker) continued her father's genealogy work (he was a professional genealogist). I have all of the paperwork done of this line and it does not show a half sibling.

On a side note, Rev. Archibald MCROBERT is a recognized Patriot with the DAR. The only women who have joined under him, to date, are descendants of William (Will)E. PARHAM (my great-grandfather). The DAR has him erroneously recorded as "McRoberts"

To fill in some of the blanks you have:
Susan John HARTMAN was born 1834, Virginia, died 1907. Sources include "Bakers in Midway" pg. 13, 14, 18; 1870 U.S. census, Ohio; and records from my grandmother who notes "The record says, 'Wm. Munford Baker, b. 1825 married his cousin, dau. of John Hartman and Susan G. McRobert by name of Susan G. Hartman.' "
The Susan G. MCROBERT noted above is the daughter of Theodorick Bland MCROBERT and Agnes Woodson MORTON.

I have what I refer to as the "Baker" document written 19 Dec 1936 by Will E. PARHAM. In it he writes, "There were several children born to Wm. Munford Baker and wife, though only one living is Daniel Baker Baker." You have a question mark for th date of death for William Munford Baker, Jr. Based upon Will E. PARHAM's document, he was deceased prior to 19 Dec 1936. Also, you have a birth year of 1862 for William Munford Baker, Jr. According to the book, "Bakers of Midway" (I forgot to note the page) he was born 19 Sep 1864.

I have two Joseph BAKER's in my database. One is Joseph Black BAKER b. 4 Apr 1869 who married Mary HARPER. He is the son of William Hartman BAKER. William is the son of Rev. William Munford BAKER, Sr. So this Joseph BAKER is the great-grandson of Rev. Daniel S. BAKER D.D. (1791-1857).

The other Joseph BAKER was born in 1762 and is the son of Benjamin BAKER, Sr. (1722-1785) and Elizabeth LAX.

Daniel Baker BAKER (1855-1937) who married Elizabeth GOWDY was William Munford BAKER, Jr.'s brother. They were also second cousins via the Theodorick Bland MCROBERT and Agnes Woodson MORTON lineage.

Rev. Daniel S. BAKER D.D. and Elizabeth Venable MCROBERT had four sons and three daughters (I have exact dates if you want them):
(1)Howard Melancton BAKER, Esq. (1817-1890)
(2)Theodora Louis BAKER (1818-1885) m. 1st Mr. SCOTT; m. 2nd, 7 Dec 1856 Henry S. HUGHES
(3)Daniel Speece BAKER (10 Dec 1820-19 Aug 1821)
(4)Rev. Daniel Sumner BAKER (1823-1900)
(5)Rev. William Munford BAKER, Sr. ((1825-1883)
(6)Daughter BAKER (Mar 1827-Mar 1827)
(7)Agnes Elizabeth BAKER (1829-1840)

Daniel Baker BAKER, who married Elizabeth GOWDY, was the son of Rev. William Munford BAKER, SR. not Rev. Daniel Sumner BAKER's son.
You are correct that Daniel Baker BAKER and his wife, Elizabeth GOWDY, had a son named William Munford BAKER. He was born in 1890, though, not 1900. Here is the information from his birth certificate:

"City of Newton
Certificate of Birth
Office of the City Clerk,
City Hall, Newton Centre. Oct. 2, 1935

I certify that the following is a true copy from the records of births of the City of Newton, County of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts:

Birth Record No. 495 of 1890, Date of Birth Nov. 20, 1890.
Name of Child, William Mumford Baker
Color, Sex and Condition (as Twins, ets) White, Male, Single
Place of Birth, Centre St. Wd. 7, Newton, Mass.
Name of Father and Birthplace, Daniel B. Baker, born Washington, D.C.
Maiden Name of Mother and Birthplace, Elizabeth Gowdy, born Zenia, Ohio
Residence of Parents, Centre St. Newton, Mass.
Occupation of Father, Manufacturer
Date of Registry Jan. 1891
Attest: Frank M. Grant (Signed)
City Clerk"

Note: The copy of the certificate of birth shows William Munford Baker's middle name as Mumford not Munford.

Hope this post sorts out some of the issues.
Katie C - Re. Archibald McRobert is my great x 4 grandfather. His daughter Elizabeth married Rev. Daniel S Baker in 1816. Their son Rev. William Munford Baker (1825 - 1883) married Susan John Hartman, of whom I have no other information. Their son, William Munford Baker, Jr. (1862 - ?) married Cordelia Mercy Lundy (1864 - ?) in 1894. Their son Albert Lundy Baker (1987 - 1955) married Mary Eaton Pray (1898 - 1989). Their son, James Pray Baker (1925 - 1995) married Barbara Reynolds (1926 - 2005). I was born in 1954 - Lundy Baker (Updike). William Munford Baker Jr. and Cordelia Lundy are my great grandparents too, so we are cousins! I am trying to put together a family tree but the several Daniel Bakers are confusing. And now I read that Daniel S. Baker had a half brother, Joseph Baker? Help! I have a few pieces of Cordelia's silver, namely a few teaspoons. I was under the impression that Daniel B Baker (married to Elizabeth Gowdy) was a cousin of William Munford Baker, Jr. I thought Rev Daniel S Baker (married to Elizabeth McRobert) had two sons: Rev Daniel Sumner Baker and Rev William Munford Baker. Rev Daniel Sumner Baker had a son Daniel B Baker who married Elizabeth Gowdy (and they had a son William Munford Baker 1900-1935). Rev William Munford Baker had a son William Munford Baker, Jr who married Cordelia Lundy. Any info you have to help clear this up would be wonderful! And does the 'B' in Daniel B. Baker really stand for 'Baker'?

Thanks for any assistance!

Lundy B. Updike

I guess it only made sense for the surviving parents to marry as well.

My records show that Capt. James Kelso Daniel had a sister, Elizabeth who married William Redd. They were the children of John Daniel and Sarah Cunningham. William T. Daniel was the son of James Daniel and Elizabeth Cunningham. John Daniel and James Daniel were brothers; Sarah Cunningham and Elizabeth Cunningham were sisters. James Cunningham, their brother, married Frances Redd, sister of William Redd. William Daniel, brother of James & John, m. Hannah Cunningham, sister of Sarah & Elizabeth. So, three brothers married three sisters; my family also intermarried into this family (Redds). Would be happy to share if you like.

George Bell died in 1816:

George Bell settled the place in Prince Edward County known as Bell View. This was evidently the tract of land which he purchased from Gideon Fremon of Amelia County, in 1771. By deed dated February 9, 1771, Gideon Freeman, of Amelia County, conveyed to George Bell, of Prince Edward County, a "tract of parcel of land containing two hundred and thirty five acres . . . . lying and being in the County of Prince Edward, bounded as followeth, viz: beginning at a bounded white oak standing on James Carter's line, thence North 13 deg. West one hundred & fifty two poles to a white oak standing on Adam Calhoun's line, thence North 86 deg. West 82 poles to a while oak standing on the top of a hill, thence S. 60 deg. West fifty four poles to a red oak, thence South 65 deg. West 118 poles to a hickory standing on John Biggar's line, thence S. 10 deg. West one hundred and seventy five poles to a hickory standing on the said John Biggar's line, N. 83 deg. East three hundred and nine poles to the beginning."

This tract of land it will be observed, was adjoining to the place where Adam Calhoun lived. Two years after purchasing the place he married Rebecca Calhoun, Adam Calhoun's daughter.

The specific dates of George Bell's birth and of his marriage to Rebecca (Rebekah) Calhoun, and the dates of her birth and death are from the manuscript (letter) of Nathan Adam Bell, of Darlington Heights, Prince Edward County, Va., July 26, 1912.

George Bell's will, dated June 12, 1815 and probated November 18, 1816 (Will Book 5, p. 135, Prince Edward County, Virginia), mentions all these children. It indicates that Elizabeth Daniel, his daughter, was a widow at the time he made a codicil Feb. 29, 1816. In addition to these children the will also mentions his grandson, George I. Bell, but does not indicate which son was his father. He mentions also his grandson, George W. Bell, son of D. Bell, He mentions his daughter Velette (Violet) Daniel, indicating that both his daughters married husbands named Daniel. He mentions his grandson, George B. Daniel, but does not indicate whether he was the son of Elizabeth of Violet.
George Bell in his lifetime seems to have aquired considerable property. The records of Prince Edward County, Virginia, show that in 1771 he acquired from Gideon Freeman 235 acres of land (D. B. 4, p. 66); in 1790 from Samuel Stanhope Smith (the first president of Hampden-Sidney College), of Princeton, NJ, 650 acres of land on both sides of Briery River (D.B. 8, p. 312); in 1797 from Thomas Jones 347 acres (D.B. 11, p. 62); in 1799 from Thomas Owen 338 acres (D.B. 11, p. 297); in 1799 from John Nelson 200 acres (D.B. 12, p. 49); in 1800 from James Dixon 400 acres (D.B. 12, p. 3); in 1801 from Richard Jones 497 acres (D.B. 12, p. 19); in 1801 from John Allen, Sr., 330 acres (D.B. 12, p. 152); in 1802 from John Allen, Sr., 303 acres (D.B. 12, p. 280); and in 1805 from Archer Womack 358 acres (D.B. 13, p. 322).
During this time he conveyed in 1795 to Adam Calhoun 235 acres (D.B. 10, p. 308); in 1807 to Adam Bell 747 acrees (D.B. 14, p. 66) and to George w. Bell 358 acres (D.B. 14, p. 64).
It would appear therefore that he had something more than three thousand acres of land after accounting for that conveyed away. His will shows that he had settled several of his children on various of these lands in his lifetime, and he gives these lands to them by his will. His will also disposes of forty slaves to his wife and children.
The appraisal of his personal property (Prince Edward Co. Will Book 5, p. 343-4-5), shows his personal property was of the value of 5,023 pounds.

I'm also a great grand child of Charlees Archer Simpson; b. abt. 1877, perhaps in VA; m. abt. 1905 to Anna Augusta Henrietta Raetz; d. unknown. I just found your post. Have you gained any additional information since you posted in 2005. I have no more ancestry information other than what I've shown. I'd be interested to see what you have. His daughter, b. 1906, just passed away in 2010 at age 104. She never knew anything about him beyond what I've posted.

I went to Library of Virginia again today. I realized I didn't check the dates after the death date for Floyd Thompson. I found his obit. The Farmville Herald was a bi-weekly publication in 1967. That's why those dates were missing. They don't exist. My mistake.
Re: Reverend Andrew Baker Davidson

William Davidson married Martha Baker (a daughter of Douglas Baker and Jane Thompson...and that Jane Thompson was a daughter of Reverend John Thomson and the Reverend's presumed wife Margaret Osborne). William Davidson appears to have been a son of the David Davidson (born circa-1715 in James City Co., VA) who married Mary Giles and who died in Buckingham Co., VA around 1798. This Davidson family was part of DNA "Family 10" at www.davidsongenes.org, and it has been "traced back" to the "first" known David Davidson....who was born in Holland, lived in James City Co., VA (JCCo) by at least 1682 and who died around 1687 in JCCo).

William Davidson and Martha Baker left the Buckingham/Prince Edward Co., VA area and moved to Botetourt Co., VA by 1769. A living male Davidson descendant of their son Reverend Andrew Baker Davidson has just ordered his DNA test from Family Tree DNA, and we should have the results in about 5-8 weeks (and, presumably, it should "match" the other male Davidson donors who are already in DNA "Family 10"). Reverend Andrew Baker Davidson had brothers who were named Baker Davidson (married Elizabeth "Betsy" Womack; died fairly young by 1805), William Davidson, Junior (married a Jinny Davison from another/unrelated family; he was APPARENTLY was the Captain William Davidson who died in Botetourt Co., VA in 1829, but no "conrete proof") and Joseph Davidson (may have never married; died fairly young around 1814). I SUSPECT that the fourth (and oldest) brother of Reverend Andrew Baker Davidson was the David Davidson who was on the 1810 Campbell Co., VA census (per several clues), but I have no proof at this time that he was definitely the son of William Davidson (who left his Will in Botetourt in 1812, but unfortunately, he only identified one of his sons and one of his daughters by name) and Martha Baker (she died in 1829 in Botetourt, per a newspaper obit). I would love to find a living male Davidson who is out of that David Davidson in Campbell Co., VA and who would take the DNA test. Comments/questions?

I would like to correspond with anyone currently researching the Lyle family that lived in and around the Keysville, Virginia area around end of the 19th century. The couple I am currently researching are the late Willie Lyle (1880-1954) and his wife Sallie Henderson (1886 - aft 1930). I would like to find out if anyone has any information on Willie (also known as Samuel W.)Lyle's father, James R. Lyle (born about 1860 in PE Co).

Willie Lyle is buried at New Bethel Baptist Church near Meherrin, VA. I am also interested in the Early family who was part of this community as well as the Egglestons.

blessing.moon@yahoo.com
