Just a note about your comment above:
"I see where William Hooper(apparently a brother of Rebecca Hooper) was accused of murdering Edward Cox."
The William Hooper you mention WAS a brother to Rebecca (Hooper) Cox Maxey. The evidence is in the 1847 will of Mrs. Nancy (Hooper) Ferguson of Cumberland County, Virginia. She, of course, was a sister to Rebecca and William Hooper. In her will, she both named her sister, AND mentions
"To a nephew James Hooper Son of William Hooper of Alabama the remaining part."
Census records show this nephew James Hooper was born about 1807/8 in Virginia; he later lived in Limestone County in 1830 to at least 1835, and then in Greene County, Alabama in 1850 and 1860.
