If you are looking for it on Google Earth, I have it's mouth at:

37° 35.738'N
77° 4.758'W

Also to be found on the USGS Quad map Tunstall.

One Thomas Snead, who may be an ancestor, was granted a patent for 450 acres on the Black Creek drainage in 1695. Neighbors mentioned in the patent were John Sandige and Hibbert. Also "along the Powhite Path".

Haven't worked out an approximate location yet.

Would appreciate any relevant information you turn up regarding residents and locations.

Max Snead

Goodmans 1600s and early 1700s

Looking for info on the Goodmans who were in the Black Creek / Matedequin Creek area of New Kent in the middle to late 1600s and early 1700s, some of which are later in Hanover and Louisa Counties, both progeny counties of New Kent, in the early and middle 1700s. They may have been in York County, parent county of New Kent, as early as the 1640s and 1660s.

The most well known of these was Benjamin Goodman, who baptized son Samuel Goodman in St Peter's Parish, New Kent, in 1701. We have lots of info on him and his descendants for several generations, but nothing proven as to his ancestry or origins. Some say he was a prisoner of Newgate reprieved to Barbados and that he made his way somehow to New Kent, and mysteriously became a prominent landholder and Planter in New Kent by the early 1700s.

However, from my own research, it seems more likely that he may have been a descendant of the Robert Goodman who came to Jamestown in 1619 on the "Bona Nova" and is listed as age 23 in the 1623 list of "Persons of Quality", so born ca 1600 somewhere in England. He is again mentioned in a list of residents living in Elizabeth City in 1637. He was probably the same Robert Goodman of York County (adjacent to and just north of Elizabeth City) who was owed a debt by Richard Wyate (sic: Wyatt) in 1646. York County was divided in 1654, with the northern parts becoming New Kent County.

These original source citations confirm that he live in and probably had lands in what was to later become New Kent County, home of Benjamin Goodman (and his sons Samuel, Benjamin and Robert) family in the late 1600s and early early 1700s, and that he probably married, prospered, and had issue, names unknown at this time.

In Robert Hope Goodman (of Atlanta GA) letter to his daughter in 1873, he writes:

“The Goodman family were among the early settlers of Virginia, or at least we can trace them back some 160 to 170 years, they settled in that part of the country between Yorktown and Richmond (RG: York and New Kent). They were well off, had fine estates and lived like Gentlemen and were well educated for people in that day and time, stood high as noble and true men. That branch of the family that my Father sprang from settled before his birth (which was 100 years ago) in Hanover County.”

Black Creek was and is located in the northwest part of current New Kent County, VA, near the southeast Hanover County line. It runs northward into the Pamunkey River. The town of Tunstall Station is just west of the creek.

Goodman families, including a Benjamin Goodman, were enumerated in the Black Creek District of New Kent in the US census records from middle to late 1800s, and may have held at least parts of the ancestral Goodman lands in New Kent until that time.

Some 1600s and early 1700s mentions:

From one source: "... John Fleming also owned land adjacent to Resse Hughes [Sr.], LTC Gooch, William Pulliam, Edmond Price, and Cornelius Dabney. Other landowners in this neighborhood were Robert Anderson, Sr., Robert Anderson, Jr., Mr. Littlepage, James Turner, Thomas Glass, Charles Loving, John Sexton, Moses Davis, George Smith, John Langstone, Philip Honeywood, David Crawford, Sr., Mrs. Hannah Clark, George Phillips, Samuel Waddy, __?__ Bassett, Charles Fleming, John Lewis, William Winston, Stephen Tarlton, David Smith, __?__ Bouth, James Tate, George Lovell, and Charles Lovell. This neighborhood included the land along the southern or southwestern side of the Pamunkey River, including the Totopotomoy Creek and the Black Creek, and the land in between, which includes the Whiting Swamp and Matedequin Creek. The Totopotomoy, Whiting, and Matedequin Creeks were in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, until 1704, were in St. Paul's Parish, New Kent County until 1720, and were in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, beginning in 1720. "

The LTC (Lt Col) Gooch in the above citation was most likely Lt Col Henry Gooch, who was either a son or brother of Maj William Gooch of York County. Maj William Gooch's 2nd wife has been identified by some sources as Anne Goodman, born ca 1630 and died in Yorktown, VA, date not specified. Was Anne Goodman a daughter of Robert Goodman and wife unknown? Her birth date would be appropriate if Robert Goodman married between 1623 and 1629.

In St Paul's Parish 1710 Processioning: "The lands of William Pulliam, John Turner, Thomas Lankford, Arthur Winchester, Benj. Goodman and Edmund Smith lying Adjacent to each other, being made one precinct of which the said William Pulliam, and John Turner were appointed Overseers who made the return on the back of the order, viz every man has processioned in our precinct excepting the Land of Mr. Thomas Graham's and the orphans of James Turner, being Objected against by Mr. James Blackwell for not being firmly laid out, this is done by us the subscribers. Subscribed by all the said parties.".

In the St Pauls Parish 1711 processioning: The lands of James Blackwell, George Turner, James Blackwell Jr., Robert Blackwell, Thomas Graham, Rees Hughes, William Pulliam, Charles Fleming (poss son of John), John Turner, Benjamin Goodman, Cap Nath West, John Howard, Mr. Booths and George Jones being made one precinct, whereof James Blackwell & George Turner were appointed Overseers

These land references, taken together with the other families named therein, firmly establish that Benjamin Goodman of New Kent resided in the same St Peter's (later St Paul's) Parish precinct as many of the same neighbors of Capt. Gooch (William, husband of Anne Goodman), and later of Lt Col Gooch (Henry), all of which lived in close proximity to each other in the area of New Kent that later became St Paul's Parish.

The Gooch name itself is interesting, and may have been a variation of the Welsh "Goch" or "Red".

If anyone here has encountered any other records of any Goodmans in New Kent and/or York County or associated parishes before 1700, especially any related to the Gooch or other New Kent families mentioned here, any assistance would be appreciated. I have scoured the internet to no avail, but do not have direct access to early New Kent (burned) or York (sparse) records.

Thanks
Ron Goodman

Thanks for the info on Black Creek. Interestingly, one citation you include mentions my distant relative..."at Mic Tucker's corner." That would be Michael Tucker, who co-owned 2,000 acres with Lionel Morris. From my research, they obtained the land by bringing over new residents from England, or Africa... "head rights"??? One reference I found at the Library of Virginia listed all 40 persons brought over.

Thanks for the help!

BUT, Robert Walton (b.1717) had a son named George (b.Dec 1749)and he is the Signer from Georgia. I descend from the signer's "Uncle George" (as mentioned above). This first George married Martha Hughes (b.1730)

All rather confusing when they didn't us Jr. or III or IV

Sandra, I moved to NKCo about 10 years ago .. and recently my husand and I bought a farm off Farmer's Drive in the eastern-most part of the county. I have done extensive research on the property - as far back as the county records go ... which I'm sure you know is not all that far back since there is such an unfortunate loss of documentation re official records. At any length, I enjoy reading queries and responses re NKCo families - and hope some of the info crosses with families I look for. I have a good friend who was a Montcastle by birth and I will share you posting with her.
Best regards,
Sandi Gaithier

Max. thanks for answering so fast. We have found things for Henry Snead, he signed the Grievancs paper in the Bacons Rebellion, Bill found it at Blisland Parish Records. We have Samuel Jr's. will and have found all the court records for the Stafford land sale and dispute among family members at simpsonhistory.com. Hatcher said that in 1683 Henry after Bacon's Rebellion sold the land of his father and moved across the York River. Bill and I know the last reference to Samuel Sr. was in 1664. We go to LVA June 1st, hopefully find some more facts. Our tree is Snead-Harris-Sands-Turner
Thanks again Vickie

Vickie,

The 1664 description of Mr. Samuell Snead Sr. as an adjacent owner in the Woodward grant is the next-to-last mention I have found of him The last was in the patent grant of March 1667/8 to John Sexton for 1,000 acres in New Kent next to "Mr. Snead". I am deducing that the reference was to the same Samuel Sr. because another adjacent landowner in that grant is "Mr. Woodward".

Considering how old Samuel, Sr. had become by 1670 and the reference to multiple Sneads as sellers (suggesting inheritances) to Col. Johnson, I feel it is a safe conclusion that Samuel Sr. was dead by 1689, when he does not appear as one of the owners of land on the Pamunkey Neck in the processioning record of New Kent County, and "Col. Johnson" does appear as an owner on that list. You have seen the other details in this Ancestry string showing that Johnson bought his land from "the Sneads". So, the purchase from the Sneads seems certain to have happened between 1668 and 1689.

The Pamunkey Neck landowners were on the north side of the Pamunkey River. It is worth noting that the north side of the river was little-settled at that time. Samuel Sr. seems to have been one of the first three colonists to have gained the favor of the Pamunkey Indian queen and been allowed to purchase desireable land on the riverbank at a time when grants from the Crown were forbidden by law. Woodward was the queen’s legal representative in dealing with the House of Burgesses and the Crown and his land was down river from Samuel Sr.’s. The other owner (down river running to the confluence with the Mattiponi to form the York River), was John West, commander of the New Kent County militia from 1652 to 1673, who, by some accounts, fathered a child with the Indian queen. This suggests to me that Samuel Sr. had a significant role in the transitional events of the time.

Regarding which Sneads sold to Col. Johnson, researchers who construct a family based on a common last name and physical presence have stuck Henry in the “child of Samuel and Alice” slot. I’m not convinced yet, and may never be. The only records mentioning Henry that I have found are (1) a 1665 Stafford County Court order book entry granting one Thomas Butler the right of attachment on Henry’s assets on account of his unpaid debt, and (2) his bold signature, one of eighty-eight signers, of a petition on 2 Apr 1677 protesting a 2 shilling per hogshead tax. Henry’s connection to a younger John Snead in New Kent is suggested by John’s naming of his (apparent) first-born son Henry.

The same 1689 processioning record shows two Sneads over on the south side of the Pamunkey. One is John, likely the sane John mentioned in the previous paragraph, and the other is Thomas. So, they could have been some or all of the Sneads from whom Col. Johnson bought, although I think Thomas may be from another Snead line.

You probably know this, but I will add it anyway. The Samuel Snead who was probably the Junior to Samuel Sr. died in the late 1680's in Stafford County. His will lists a number of weapons and his horse’s name was Trooper. My guesses are (1) that the two Samuels, perhaps Henry, and maybe the immigrant son William, fought the Indians of a different tribe in the Stafford County area some time in the 1650's to 1670's with Col. John West, which worked to the advantage of the Pamunkey Indians and (2) that their participation lead to the 1664 purchase of the land on the Pamunkey River.

You might find something on these Sneads at the LVA in the records of military activity against the Indians and/or during Bacon’s Rebellion.

I’ll appreciate it if you will let me know of any discoveries you make.

Thanks,

Max

I googled upon your 2006 post accidentally--this Jesse Hans Oslin was my grandfather and all your birth/death/work info about him is correct. We have no knowledge of his siblings/relatives--he came to the US alone. We assumed they were all killed in the holocaust....maybe others emigrated in the early 20th century as well?

Max, Hi this is Vickie, sister of Bill, a few years ago you helped us find Richard Sneads father, Holman. We are now trying to find out as close to when Samuel Snead died. I have been researching Richard Johnson and saw your reply to someone about Pamunkey. What is the latest date other than 1664 do you know of Samuel? Do you know when Johnson bought the land from we presume from Henry? We are going to LVA in June and trying to do some research before we go.
As always thanks for your help, Vickie Snead

Dear Mutlow/Taylor cousins,

Several mentions have been made about a copy of our family history that is too hard to read. If it begins "The early days of this old Livingston County family are hidden in mystery..." and ends "William Mutlow's independence and strength have survived in his many descendants...", then I have a clear copy and am happy to share.

I am trying to verify William's father's name. Where did you get the name Zachriah?

Sincerely,
Cathy
Hi,

This is my first time on this site so I really don't know the procedure...hope I do this right. I read your post on Moores and Crumps. My research is on Crumps, mostly of Callaway County, Missouri. My grandmother was a Crump, her father was Elijah Crump and I have his lineage back to 1700s.

I haven't heard about a name change, sounds interesting. May open a few closed doors.

I'd be happy to share.

Jacki Gray chachipup@yahoo.com

Washington Tyler

Trying to research Washington Tyler, b. @1828 in Hanover County, Virginia and married Mary Courtney in New Kent County, 1851.

There was a Washington Tyler in the 87th Regiment in King William County, later assigned to the 2nd Reserve Artillery and died in King William County July 8, 1862, of disease; Mary E. Tyler, widow, presented the claim.

There was another Washington Tyler who survived the conflict, Co. A, 10th Heavy Artillery (Mayre’s Battery), 2nd Lt., Co. A, elected 3/14/1862; on rolls as 3rd Lt., resigned 10/06/62, S.O. 233 transferred to QM. Dept. as shoemaker. Also on roll Waller’s QM Dept,. Co. A, July 1863 and Co. C, July 1864. On Federal Provost Marshall’s descriptive list, undated; Co. A, 2 Reg’t.; age 38, height 5’ 10”, dark eyes, dark hair, shoemaker. (1865 – 38 = 1827)

In 1870, Washington Tyler, age 41, is listed in Richmond, Marshall Ward, pg. 37. He is Family 393 and is alone, occupation listed as Bar room. Adjacent is Family 392, Wm. J. Harwood, age 46, shoemaker, and Catherine V. Harwood, age 40, keeping house.

In 1880, Washington H. Tyler, age 52 is listed in Richmond, Henrico, pg. 77; at 1015 West Broad Street, a grocer and he is married to Catherine V., age 52.

In 1870 Mary E. Tyler appears in Richmond, Jefferson Ward, pg. 122. As Family 907, she is 28 with son Robert, age 12; and daughter Virginia , age 6.

In 1880 Mary E. Tyler is in Black Creek District, New Kent County, age 38, with children Robert T., age 20; Virginia R., age 16; and Blanche, age 9.

There is only 1 Washington Tyler in the 1850 census and he is in Hanover County. I cannot reliably locate him in the 1860 census.

Were there actually two different men named Washington Tyler or is there more to this mystery?

Thanks,
Michael W.
