Aged and Highly Respected Colored Resident Passes to His Final Reward
Samuel Thornton, who was one of the most highly respected colored residents of this city (Zanesville, Ohio) died at 5 o'clock Thursday evening at his home on the Coopermill road.
Mr. Thornton, who was 67 years of age was born a slave in Louden county, Virginia.
Soon after the close of the civil war he came to Ohio ( Mount Pleasant, Jefferson County) Ohio and soon thereafter located at Zanesville having since resided in this city or vicinity.
The deceased was an honest upright and industrious citizen who enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him.
Funeral services over the remains will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Union Baptist church on Eighth street
Interment will be made in Woodlawn cemetery.

Other source states he married his wife Margaret Ann, who had lived on the Tyler Plantation in Fauquier County, VA. They married in Loudoun County.
