Re: Cornelius Dabney The Indian Interpreter

Judith,
Did you ever receive any further info on this. I am searching for the same. Was Susannah Swann the daughter of Thomas Swann or someone else? If so who was she? Indian?

One source I found that shows the wife of Cornelius Dabney was NOT Thomas Swann's duaghter Susannah is "Extract from "The Virginia Magazine, Vol. XXVIII" (1920)". This seems to show (as written by Samuael Swann d. 1707) that Susannah had no issue and was married to William Marriot.

We are indebted to Captain T. A. Ashe, of Raleigh, N. C. for the following copy of a family record prepared by Samuel Swann (son of Col. Thomas Swann of Virginia) who removed to North Carolina.
The following is a copy of a paper compiled by Samuel Swann who died in 1707, (in Perquimans Co. \emdash Albemarle, N. C.)
"My Grandmother, Judith Swann, was born on the 5th day of February 1589, being Wednesday and died on the 16th, day of March 1636 in the 47th year of her age and was buried at Swann 's Point.
My Grandfather William Swann married again the 1st day of May 1637, and died the last of February following in the 52nd year of his age and was buried at Swann 's Point.
My father, Col. Thomas Swann was born in May 1616, \emdash was married to his first wife Margaret Debton the 13th of January 1630, by whom he had two sons and one daughter, to wit: Susannah Swann who was born the 26 October, 1640 \emdash and died the 25th of November 1660, without issue\emdash having been married to Maj. William Marriot eight months and 22 days \emdash and was buried at Swann 's Point. William Swann \emdash who was born 30th October 1644 and died young in London, England and was buried there. And Thomas Swann who was born the 23rd of March 1645 and died without issue at St. Edmunds Bury in Suffolk England the 19th of February 1666, and was there interred.
My said father's first wife died the 5th of April 1646 and was was buried at Swann 's Point.
My father was married to his second wife, my dear mother, Sarah Cod, the 13th of January 1649, by whom he had issue, likewise, two sons and one daughter \emdash Sarah; who was born the 15th of October 1651 and died the 9th of August 1652, and was buried at Swann 's Point. Samuel who was born the 11th May 1653, and Sampson who was born the 28th May 1654, and died the 1st of November 1668, and was interred at Swann 's Point.
My said mother departed this life to a better, the 13th of January 1654, having been married that day, just five years and was buried at Swann 's Point.
My father was married to his third wife, Sarah Chandler, the 30th of July 1655, by whom he had two sons and two daughters, viz, Judith, who was born the 22nd April 1656 and died the 30th March 1668 and was buried at Swann 's Point. Anne, who was born the 9th, of July 1657 and died the 21st of. August 1659 and was buried at Swann 's Point. A son \emdash not baptized, who was born the 11th of December 1658 and died the 20th of the same month \emdash and another son born 1st November 1662 and died at the birth.
My said father's third wife died 10th November 1662 \emdash and was buried at Swann's Point.
My father was married to his fourth wife, Ann Brown, widow and relict of Henry Brown, one of the Council of State, the 23rd day of * * * * * \emdash who died the 12th of August 1668, without issue and was buried at the Four Mile Tree.
My father married his fifth wife. Mary Mansfield the 20th of December 1668, by whom he had issue one son and three daughters -- Mary who was born the 5th of October 1669, who married Mr. Richard Bland, Thomas and Frances, at one birth, who were born the 14th December 1670.
Frances died 14th April 1676 and was buried at Swann's Point.
Thomas married Eliza Thompson, daughter of William Thompson.
Sarah who was born the 8th of and was first married to Mr. Henry Randolph and after his death to Mr. Giles "Webb.
My honored and dear father, Col. Thomas Swann departed this life for a better the 16th of September 1680, being 64 years and was buried at Swann's Point at my Grandfather's feet."

Extracts from a paper drawn up by Hon. Samuel Swann, Collector of His Majesty's Customs at Roanoke.
"My dearly and most entirely beloved wife Sarah, daughter of William Drummond Esq., was born the 2nd day of March 1654, being Friday, about 2 of the clock in the morning, and was married to me the 24th March 1673 being Tuesday, \emdash by whom I had seven sons and two daughters.
My dear and most entirely beloved wife Sarah Swann departed this life to a better on Saturday the 18th of April 1696 about 8 o'clock in the morning in North Carolina, and was buried at Swann's Point in Surry County at her own mother's feet on Friday the 28th of the same month, being 41 years one month and 16 days old, having been married to me 22 years and as much more as from the 24th of March to the 18 of April aforesaid.
My dear and entirely beloved wife Elizabeth daughter of Alexander Lillington of North Carolina, was born the 17th of June 1679, married to me the 19th of May 1698, being Thursday, the widow of John Tandall, by whom I had issue as follows \emdash viz:
1. Elizabeth who was born the 26th of June 1699, being Monday, about 12 o'clock at noon; baptized the 9th October following, being Monday.
2. Sarah who was born the 29th of December 1701, being Monday about a quarter of an hour before sunset \emdash was baptized the 2nd of February, following, being Monday.
3. Samuel who was born the 31st of October 1704 being Tuesday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. The Moon being full at 12 o'clock, was baptized on Thursday the 23rd of August 1705.
4. John Swann, who was born the 25th of April 1707 being Friday about half an hour before Sundown and was baptized by William Gordon."

Addendum of Col. Edward Moseley:
Some of his children by his first wife were "buried at my plantation at Lawns Creek" \emdash so there he probably resided before coming to Albemarle, only William, Thomas and Henry, issue of his first marriage, seem to have survived \emdash to attain manhood. One of that branch was John Swann, Member of Congress. The District Attorney in New York (1919) descends from Sarah, No. 2 who married a Jones \emdash one of her sons returning to the name of Swann, about 1790.
The Honorable Samuel Swann Esq., Collector of His Majesty's Customs in Eoanoke departed this life the 14th of September 1707 just at daybreak at his dwelling plantation in Perquimans and lies interred there, at whose death and funeral, I the subscriber was present.
EDWARD MOSELEY.
Hi there-
I have been researching King William county regarding the Newman family. I remember recently reading info about all the ferries - maybe in a gazette- it recounted the fees and routes of the ferries. There were many listed. And that might give you some names associated with the ferry. I was just exploring the Virginia Historical Society site, especially the digitized documents. There are 2 maps around the Civil War era - one of which puts names on the properties - which might be a giant help. These maps were on the VHS digitized site. Good luck!
Liz

Frasure, Frazier, etc.

Thanks for your reply. His family and offspring all spelled it Frazier, but his marriage license from Missouri in 12 Nov 1857 spells it William T Frasure. All census records after 1850 show it spelled as Frazier. I have no idea what county but I am sure he was from Virginia.

Thanks for asking.
Traci

We are also looking for information on a William Thomas Frazier 1821-1873 who was born in Virginia possibly Hardy or other. He married Nancy Jane Brock 1825-1917 part Cherokee (3rd gr grandfather was Reuben Great Eagle Brock) and together they lived in Missouri, then on to TX and back to Siloam Springs ARK where they stayed until they passed.
Children of the marriage are: Samuel Frazier 1861 – 1925
Montague Commodore Frazier (Mont) 1865 –
Martha Alice (Mattie) Frazier 1867 – 1939

We have good info on Nancy's family but are stumped on which of the Frazier's William T Frazier hails from. All help and info much appreciated.

I know this was an old post but I wanted to provide the Dabney-Robinson-Sizer-Abraham connection. Mordecai Abraham had a daughter Mary/Polly.
The Kelly Farm is on Rt 600, they have a dairy farm right on the corner of 30 & 600. You can probably google it - can't think of the first name of the parents but my daughter years ago spent the night there alot. I will check with her to see if she knows of one. You can probably email the King William Historical Society with you request I am on the board and will be putting inquiry into the new newsletter that will go out really soon. Everyone that is a member will see it. If you are not a member maybe you would like to be. I am trying to have them do more or family research for people like me! Marie Jennings
In January 1776, Samuel Ware enlisted in the 7th Virginia Regiment, under Captain Holt Richeson, and by July, Captain Reuben Lipscomb was in command of this Company.(of King William Co.)

After the campaigns of Chesapeake Bay, New Jersey, and Philadelphia we find that the 7th wintered at Valley Forge.

On December 11 the army left Whitemarsh for its new winter campsite. Upon arriving at Valley Forge (the forge itself had been burned by the British in September) on December 19, the troops immediately began construction of their huts, and quarters were found for the general and some of the senior officers in nearby farm houses.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1778.
A warrant for 316 dollars, issue in faver of Captain Reuben Lipscomb, for the extra month's pay granted to the army under General Washington, by the resolution of the 29th of December last, and which is due to 40 men of the 7th Virginia regiment now on their way to Virginia, who were regularly discharged on the 2 February, and mentioned in a list signed by Brigadier General Woodford, and also to Captain Lipscomb, who conducts them; he to give a receipt for the money, and to account for the same.

By the end of February, Samuel had enlisted for another year, and promoted to Sergeant, and while in route to New York we find the following.

12th July 1778 Sunday, Head Quarters, Paramus, N.J.
At a Genl Court Martial in the right wing of the Army, at Watersession,9th July 1778 Lt. Col. Mead President, Capt. Lipscomb acting Q.M. Genl to the Division commanded by Major Genl Baron Stuben tried for treating the Genl in a disrespectful manner, after considering the charge and evidence, the court is of the unanimous opinion that Capt. Lipscomb is not guilty of the charge against him, and do acquit him with honor- the Genl approves the sentence, he is willing to believe that Capt. Lipscomb did not intend that disrespect to the Baron de Stuben which the Baron apprehended. At the same time he must observe that there was an impropriety in Capt. Lipscomb taking quarters in a house destined for the Genl. commanding the Division.

After the army’s defeat at White Plains, N.Y., Washington retreated to northern New Jersey, where Captain Reuben Lipscomb died October 3, 1778, at Pompton, New Jersey.
Sgt. Samuel Ware served out the year and returned to Virginia, he died 1830, in Middlesex Co.
Wendell Ware
She had a sister Elizabeth Taylor Moore married to John Milton Dabney.

Anna and William Gwathmey had children: Elizabeth Taylor Gwathmey, Fannie Fielding Lewis or Fielding Fannie Lewis Gwathmey and Brooke or H. Brooke Gwathmey.

I also found genealogy work on archive.org.... http://www.archive.org/stream/pedigreehistoryo00well/pedigre...

this does show William G Gwathmey, but only has Anna Henry Moore as a friend.

Francis Eppes Dabney of Dinwiddie County's father was Francis Dabney listed in the Dinwiddie personal property tax lists from 1783-at least 1814. When he dropped out is unclear because Francis E. was sometimes listed as Francis. The first Francis's birth year was probably before 1746 because he was mentioned twice in the Dinwiddie County Clerk's fee book in 1763. If he was at least 18, he was born in 1845 or earlier. He appears not to have been very prosperous because he was never listed in the land tax lists.
The first Francis's father was John Dabney, first of Hanover County, then Amelia County, and finally Dinwiddie County where he was a tobacco inspector at Bolling's Warehouse near Petersburg from before 1754 to 1869.

His wife was Sarah Lister, whom he married in 1750. He died in 1765, leaving issue Christopher, Peter, Judith, Lucy, Sarah which last married Benjamin Grymes, of Orange [Orange Cty, VA].

PETER3 ROBINSON, youngest son of Col. Christopher Robinson, was born March 1, 1718-19 (Parish Register), and died in 1765. He lived in the parish of St. Johns, King William County; and his will was dated January 8, 1765. He married Sarah, daughter of Alexander Lister and Lucy his wife, on August 9, 1750 (Register) and had issue:

(1) Christopher4, (2) Peter4, (3) Judith4, born Sept. 5, 1751 - (Parish Register) (4) Sarah4, married Oct. 4, 1773, Benjamin Grymes, of Orange (Parish Register) (5) Lucy4 named in his will and in the chart; married Thomas Robinson, son of her uncle Benjamin Robinson.

Of these children Christopher was undoubtedly the Christopher who was at William and Mary College in 1780 and ran away to the British in New York, where he joined the Loyal American Regiment (see Sabin's Loyalists of the American Revolution II., page 229). It is possible that his brother Peter emigrated with him. They are mentioned in the will of their aunt Judith Robinson in 1774. Christopher Robinson married Esther Sayre, and his son Beverley, born in 1791, was Chief Justice of Upper Canada. He (Beverley) was father of General C.W. Robinson, of London.

In a suit in the Chancery Court of the Williamsburg District, entitled "Grymes vs. Robinson", it is stated that Major John Robinson was the surviving executor of the will of Peter Robinson, that he was guardian of Peter Robinson's three daughters, who lived with him until 1776, that as surviving executor he had charge of all the personal and real estate of his brother Peter; and no mention is made in these papers of either Christopher or Peter the sons. This omission can only be accounted for by the death or flight of both. Under the Virginia law during the revolution the property of all

Page 187.

British aliens was confiscated. There is no mention of the death of either in any of the Virginia records which have come down to us, nor do their names appear in the list reported in 1782 of land holders in King William County, where their father had resided.

see

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~anneology/...

acc 1/15/12

Peter Robinson m.(9 Aug. 1750) Sarah Lister 1 March 1718/19 - 1765, St. Johns, King William Co., Virg.

dau Lucy md Thomas, son of her uncle, Benjamin Robinson (so . . . her cousin - bcs)

see

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ROBINSON/1997-...
Dear Robinsons,

Peter Robinson married Sarah Lister at Christ Church [Episcopal], Urbanna, Middlesex County, Virginia, on 9 August 1750, according to an IGI entry from a temple sealing record.
Re: Is there anyone who might know the history of the "Wakema" farm/plantation from 1870 back to the Jamestown era?

Hi,

I found this link that has a picture of the Wakema house and some history. I hope it helps. I'm pasting in the history, just in case something happens to the web site one day.

http://www.ssentinel.com/index.php/supplements/article/garde...

Wakema

Wakema was owned as early as 1662 by Captain Roger Mallory. He sold 900 acres to William Frazer who by 1764 was running a ferry to King and Queen County and operating an ordinary. Later, he built a warehouse to inspect tobacco and a shipbuilding facility which furnished small ships for the Navy during the Revolutionary War.

After a succession of owners, Roger Gregory of Elsing Green purchased Frazer’s Ferry and his brother acquired Wakema in 1867. The original house had possibly been damaged in the defense of the Mattaponi River and the present home was built in the 1860s. In 1886, William Bray established a post office called “Wakema” on the property. Wakema became a stop for steamboat traffic along the Mattaponi River where warehouses and a pickle factory were built.

Today, Wakema is a private residence overlooking a wide expanse of the Mattaponi River. The gently rolling hills, barns and fenced grazing pastures are home to the many rescued dogs, sheep, goats and chickens the owners lovingly tend. A small pond and gazebo near the house make a lovely place to picnic. the house is open for the first time by owners Mr. and Mrs. Miles Baker.

I'll let you know if I run across anything about your great grandmother. I have Reeds in my family line too.

Kim Wrenn
Durham NC.

Vermont farm is located on Route 600 (West River Road) about 1/2 mile east of its intersection with Route 628 (Dorrel Road).

The Original Vermont farm consisted of about 1465 acres.

The main part of Vermont Farm, about 955 acres, is currently a gravel quarry.

There are several other parcels of varying acreage. There is a cemetery on a private farm, now known as River Hill, that was originally part of Vermont that has members of the Hawes family buried on it. (FYI: I am a descendant of Walker Hawes, who purchased Vermont from Nathaniel Burwell's estate in 1802).

The only marked graves on the site are those of Walker Hawes and his wife, Mary Martin. However, according to what I have heard, there were other unmarked grave-depressions at the site evident as late as the 1950s.

Perhaps, your Burwell anscestors are buried in this cemetery, but there are no stones or other records, that I am aware of, that would confirm this.

Vermont Plantation King William Co.

Does anyone know the location of this old plantation? It was built by Nathaniel Burewll & sold in 1802 when he died.

This is all I have:

Old Kent County, Virginia: Some Accounts of the Planters...V. 1 (1977, 2006) by Malcolm Hart Harris, M.D.

P. 963

(66e) VERMONT

This was the last of the Burwell lands to be sold, for it was the home where Nathaniel Burwell and his wife lived during their residency in King William County. He died here in 1801.

The late Miss Elizabeth Hawes Ryland says in her files from newspapers: "Vermont was sold to my great-grandfather, Walker Hawes, in 1802, and it was the last portion to pass out of the Burwell family." (16)

The estate of Nathaniel Burwell was settled up by Lewis burwell of Richmond, who gave notice in the Virginia Gazette that all persons having demands against the estate of nathaniel Burwell, desceased, are desired to send them to the subscriber, who has for sale several families of valuable negroes belonging to the Estate. This notice in the press was dated May 10, 1802. (17)

The deed of conveyance dated February 23, 1802 from the

(16) King William County, Virginia from Old Newspapers and Files, page 30

(17) Ibid., page 70

P. 964

Burwell estate to Walker Hawes, conveyed 1,000 acres of land. (18)

Walker Hawes (1776-1828) was son of Samuel Hawes and Ann Walker, his second wife, who was a daughter of Benjamin Walker and Ann Aylett, daughter of Col. William Aylett of "Fairfield."

At the time of the purchase of Vermont, Walker Hawes was living in King and Queen County where he married mary, daughter of Thomas Coleman martin and Mildred, daughter of William Pollard of Hanover County. It was from this connection that a large family relationship has sprung. The elder Walker Hawes died May 15, 1828, and his wife survived him until 1850.

Mrs. Mildred Hawes was devised the plantation, Vermont, for her lifetime and after her death, it passed to her two daughters; Miss Charlotte Hawes and Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson. When the two sisters died, the Vermont Estate passed to Mary Hawes, daughter of Major James Johnson and Elizabeth Hawes.

Mary Hawes Johnson married Robert Semple Ryland who was a son of William Semple Ryland of Roseville.

The Rylands reared their family at Vermont and Miss Elizabeth Hawes Ryland, a daughter, wrote that it was never a Ryland place, but it was for many years the home of the family of Robert Temple Ryland, whose heirs sold the land to The Chesapeake Corporation of Virginia in 1950.

(66e,a) THE VERMONT DWELLING

The house which stood at Vermont when Walker Hawes bought the plantation in 1802, was the one in which the Burwells had resided for many years. This house was located on that part of the farm which was known as "River Hill," which was conveyed by deed of gift to James Christopher Johnson by his aunt, Miss Charlotte Hawes. The house, which stands at River Hill (1975), was built by James Christopher Johnson after the Civil War.

For many years the River Hill plantation was owned by J. W. Reid and is now owned by Samuel Ball.

The brick house which was at Vermont was built in 1850 when the Hawes family moved from the old Burwell residence at River Hill. This brick house was the home of the Rylands and the younger members of the family were born here and grew up at this place. It was burned in 1895. (19)

(18) King William Records, Book No. 9, page 107

(19) Personal Communication from Miss E. S. Ryland in 1950

END

Can someone please help me find this old place? I am a descendant of Nathaniel Burwell. He should be buried somewhere on the property.

Thank SO much! HR

I have "Rebecca Fannie Blake" (b. 16 Feb 1856) as daughter of John W. Blake (27 May 1827-6 Feb 1903) and Harriet Rice Blake (30 Dec 1828-22 Nov 1883). John Blake was one of eight children of William Blake and Ann B. Ryland. William was one of four children of Thomas Blake of Middlesex County, VA, the Blake immigrant from England in the late 1700s. I have nothing on Harriet Rice . . . except that the Blakes and Rices intermarried frequently (along with the Sweets and Davises.) John and Harriet had 8 children, Rebecca being number 4. Rebecca married George L. Ellett and they had 6 children: James Andrew; George Lee; James V; Lucian Blake; Harriet Elizabeth; and Charles Obba Ellett.

I'm descended from the Blake/Rice/Davis/Sweet intermarriages, not through John but through several of his siblings. I don't know a lot more than this but I might be able to connect you with some of John's descendants.

Hope this helps.

As I recall, there are a few ancient flat tombstones at Old St John's Church but I'm not sure any of them are legible. Given the complicated history of St John's, I doubt any of the original parish records exist but you might inquire at its successor church in nearby West Point: St John's Episcopal Church, 916 Main St, West Point, VA 23181. http://stjohnswp.org/History/ Nearly all official records for King William County were lost in fires in the late 1700s and the late 1800s so there's not much help there. There are some nice photos and history at Old St John's official website: http://oldstjohns.org/ St John's has been magnificently restored and is well worth a stop if you're passing through the area although you'll probably need to call ahead to arrange a visit to the interior.
