This is the information I have. Caroline Spencer married Thomas E. Cowles in 1817. Thomas Cowles died in 1804 and Caroline remarried a man named Bassette and she had a daughter Lucy Bassette, and it is stated she might have married a third time? I am missing her birthdate/year and also when she died. This is the information that was looked up for me at the SWEM library regarding David Spencer and Pinkethman Taylor.

From the land tax lists, Mansfield Spencer owned 120 acres in 1782. There are no lists for 1784-1786. In 1787, the 120 acres is charged to his estate and continues as such until 1804 when the 120 acres is charged to David Spencer. There are no alterations for that year, but I think we can assume that David was son of Mansfield. I also think that this 120 tract was where the cemetery is.

In 1782, Pinkethman Taylor was charged with 160 acres plus other tracts. His holdings change over the next few years, but they are charged to his estate in 1794. In 1804, David Spencer is also charged with 160 acres "from Pinkethman Taylor's estate." Though not stated, he probably inherited the 160 acres in right of his wife, Sarah Taylor. Pinkethman Taylor was listed as Captain of JCC's First Company of militia in July 1785.
Not sure if you know of the Spencer cemetery at Longhill Rd. David Spencer Cowles is buried there along with his two daughters. I was told that David Spencer and Sarah Taylor are buried there as well, but there are no headstones for them. David Warren Spencer son of Upton Spencer is buried there. Hope this helps. I have more detailed information regarding the cemetery that I can send to you via email. Let me know. Thanks!
I would love to have the details of your Caroline M. Spencer... I descend from her brother William Lewellyn Spencer and I have Caroline in my tree, but I have nothing on her birth, marriage, etc. Do you have information on the other siblings as well? I have Upton Mansfield Spencer b.1804, William Lewellyn Spencer b.1805, Wilson Cary Spencer, Caroline M. Spencer, Jane Spencer, Nathaniel Spencer, Julia Spencer (all children of Sarah Taylor and David Spencer).
Heather Rose

I am interested in what you have on Pinkethman Taylor's line... my line stems from his daughter Sarah Taylor, but that's all I have. Would you mind outlining the argument for both theories of Pinkethman's parentage?
You can message me directly and I will give you my e-mail. Do you have a transcription or copy of Pinkethman Taylor's will?
I also have William Pinkethman in my Graves line... (his daughter Mary Pinkethman m. Ralph Graves(b.1692).
Thanks!
Heather Rose

I"m afraid the only information I had was Pinketman Taylor who had a daughter Sarah Taylor who married David Spencer, and that David Spencer is listed in Pinkethman Taylors will as being left 160 acres of land, etc. If you have any information on the marriage of Daniel Taylor and Sarah Pinkethman I would love to see it! You mentioned in a previous message that you had a cousin who was able to confirm the marriage. I don't have any information on Daniel Taylor, so far have only found info on a William Taylor. Thank you!

There is conflicting research out there one showing that Pink Taylor was son of Daniel Taylor and Sarah Pinkethman the other is that Sarah and Daniel had a son William who had Pinkethman Taylor. Judging by birth dates either one fits. Do you know for sure either way? I have speculated that Pinkethman Taylor may have had up to 4 children Jane(my 3rd great grandmother)Sarah, William Brown & a unknown Taylor who had a son named Pinkethman A. Taylor. The only thing I know for sure is Jane's line. Do you need that? Can you share your notes on the others? Let me know what you need on jane. I'm out of town right now and can send you a PDF of her line when I get home.

If you haven't found Liberty Baptist Church in Lanexa yet, it is right on the James City Co. and New Kent Co. line, right off of Rt. 60, heading west toward Richmond from Toano. The church was chartered in 1830, so it has been there for a long time. The cemetery is in the back of the church. Surnames include: TAYLOR, HICKS, OTEY, MARTIN, HAZELWOOD, WALLS, and many more.

Hi Istelcz,

I have only 2 children for Rebecca and Timothy. That would be Thomas and Sarah Pinkethman. How did you get a Pinkethman Taylor to be son of Rebecca? From another marriage? By the way we're cousins...I descend from Sarah Pinkethman and Daniel Taylor. I can provide all you want from there down. From there up is sketchy.

In doing research on my gggrandfather David Spencer Cowles, mother Caroline M. Spencer (Cowles) came across a family cemetery and have acquired information of family members interred there.

Family members Listed - David Warren Spencer son of Upton M. and Catherine Spencer;

Lena Camilla Ware wife of David W. Spencer, daughter of William Walker Ware and Letitia Power Gregory

David Spencer Cowles son of Thomas and Caroline Cowles
Caroline E. G. Cowles daughter of David and Maria Cowles
Betty M. Cowles (Maria Elizabeth) daughter of David and Maria Cowles

Georgia Durand Goodman
Louisa Fletcher Hicks Durand mother of Georgia Durand, daughter of George Washington Hicks and Virginia M. Spencer
George Washington Durand father of Georgia Durand

Lucy Spencer wife of Charles M. Spencer, daughter of Lewis H. and Julia A. Richardson

The cemetery is located 3840 Longhill Rd, backs up to Forest Glen Development off of Centerville Rd. It is located on property that would have been a part of the Spencer's Ordinary tract near (across the road) from the site of the 1781 Battle of Spencer's Ordinary. The cemetery area enclosed is large enough to have accommodated fifty or more graves, but only a few tombstones are there today (if there ever were tombstones).

The Sons of Confederate Veterans has been working at this cemetery, cleaning up the brush, tombstones. The chained link fence and gate surrounding the cemetery need to be replaced. Here is the link to their website if you would like to see pictures of the cemetery and the work they are doing. They will be going back there this winter to complete their work and repair my gggrandfathers tombstone (David Spencer Cowles).

http://www.jamescitycavalry.org/id7.html
Hi Researches!

I am doing some family research - Richard Foster and Robert Coleman in James City County, Virginia along the Chickahominy River and found reference to the following locations probably along the eastern bank of the river. These name showed up in patents:

Warrany Creek
Warrany Swamp
Warrany Landing

Pease Hill
Pease Hill Point
Pease Hill Point Creek
Marish Island at Pease Hill Point

I am trying to connect two families living on the Chickahominy River - Robert Coleman - an indented servant I believe lives on the east side at the above named places and Richard Foster also an indented servant living at Juring Point, on the west side near where the Chickahominy meets the James River.

Thanks for your help

Bryce

Caoline Spencer was my ggggrandmother married Thomas Edward Cowles Dec. 25, 1770, David Spencer Cowles, (son) was my gggrandfather - would love to receive any information you have on her as well as her family. I have some information regarding her father David Spencer who was Justice of the Peace in James City in 1820? Have a letter that was sent to me by a cousin in Virginia which was written by someone who whose grandfather was David Cowles gives some information on WL Spencer/Lane/Sarah Henley and E.D. Spencer being second cousins, third cousins were Lucy Lamb of Norfolk was the daughter of Capt. L.W. Lane, Dudley Cowles was the son of Harriet Cowles? I can email this letter to anyone who would like to have it.

I don't know if this will help you or not but a John Dunstan is believed to have married Sisley Greene at Jamestown. I don't know the year of marriage but I do know that John Dunstan was named in the will of Peter Greene. This is the Peter Greene that was married to Katharine Baker. Your Thomas Dunston could be a descendant of this John Dunstan. If you can confirm this, please let me know. Lindagreenwellman@hotmail.com

Hello Eve,

I caught your later response to a quesion and discovered your willingness to do lookups on Bruton Parish Church. I am a Wills/Wells descendant of the Wills of York County and Warwick County, VA. I understand there was a John Wills and his wife, Elizabeth who were two of the earliest people interred in the cemetery. I would very much appreciate your checking to see if this couple is listed.

I am also a Gregory descendant of James Gregory and his wife, Sarah Thompson who were married 28 November 1756 in St. James Parish Church, Goochland County, VA. I know they were not connected to Bruton Parish, but still wonder if you have any knowledge of this James Gregory.

Very best regards,

John Fox
Winston Salem, NC
bebenjohn@aol.com

Could possibly be related to same Davises in Richmond County, Virginia in 1762? Tracking parents of John Davis who married Lydda/Lydia/Lidda Lyons in Granville, NC in 1784. Would love to hear from those related. Many Davises appear around Middlesex, VA and well before 1700s.

He was tried as a prisoner at Biggerstaff's in Rutherford County and found guilty of crimes against the state of North Carolina because of fighting against the Americans under Ferguson's Loyalist troops. He along with eight others were hung there on the 14th of October 1780.

Hi Kathleen, Has a male Davis from your family joined the DNA Davis Project? As more and more of us do that we will start finding connections that will help greatly in our research.

Here is the e-address of the Davis Project on Family Tree DNA - http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Davis/default.aspx
There are now about 310 Davises listed from all over the US and elsewhere, click on "Y-DNA Results" in the upper left to see the list. The Davis I mentioned in my first post in this thread will have his results listed here about the end of May (my own results are the Moses Davis at the very bottom of the list). I believe you can have your Soronson's results included on the Davis Project, just contact Elby Davis, the administrator of the project.
Regards, Richard

Davis brothers, b early 1700s, Wales, moved to James City County early to mid 1700s?

The book, "Descendants of Samuel Davis of Ulster County, New York", by David Davis and published in 1968, says Samuel and three brothers, "came to the colonies from Wales some time between 1710 and 1730". He says two brothers located in Ulster Co. NY and goes on to say, "The other two brothers decided to settle in Jamestown, James City County, Virginia." David says Samuel was about 12 when he crossed the Atlantic but he gives no other hint of the age of the brothers. There is no further information on the brothers who located in Virginia, apparently he was not able to follow their trail, so we have no idea when they might have moved their, though a guess would have been in the early to mid 1700s, and no idea if they were successful and stayed. Does this ring a bell with any researchers of early Davis settlers of James City County, Virginia? One other hint, Samuel named his children as follows (and in this order), Jacobus, Isaac, Elizabeth, John, Peter, Jean (Jennetje), Maria, Esaias, Winifred, Catherine, then Rachel. Perhaps the brothers would have used some of these names as well. We are just now doing a DNA sample on a Davis who has a strong paper trail to Samuel, so the possibility of connecting these branches by DNA exists. Thanks for any help. Richard
