I have a book that is full of the very earliest information, regarding the settlement of Jamestown, The First Colony.
This material has a starting date of 1586 and ends about 1650.

This has names of the first settlers and subsequent arrivals, with some Ship names and their captains. It lists those killed by indians and the names of the settlements in which they died. It also lists those who survived the attacks and where they were residing at the time.
Just a few of the surnames mentioned here are:
Abbot, Adams,Allen,Andrews,Archer,Argall, Armstrong, Arundell, Atkins,Atkinson,Bacon,Bagnall, Bailey,Baker,Banks,Ball,Barker,Barnett,Bass,Bean,Bennet,Best,Booth, Box,BradshawBrookes,Browne,Carter,Chamberlin,Champ,Chandler,Chapman,Cheesman,Clarke,Collins, Coleman,Cooke,Crisp, Crouch,Dare, Davis,Davies,Dawson,Delaware,Dickenson,Dixon,Edmonds,Edwards,Ellis,English,Evans, Ferrar, Farmer,Faulkner,Fisher,Fitts,Flint,
Forest,Foster,Freeman,Fry, Ganett,Gates,Gibbes,Giles,Glover,Gray,Greene.
And many many more.

Most of this information is brief and more informational than genealogical. One a few occasions, there may be mention of someone being someones son or brother.

If you are seeking the placement of a very early ancestor in Va, make a request. I can not promise to connect you , but I will do my best to provide you with the information.
Most of these lookups, can be answered via Email, unless you want copies.

I am looking for information on the Barnett's of James City that married into the Farrar Family. I believe that William Barnett's son John Barnett married Katherine Farrar. Do you have information on William and Humphrey Barnett? Thank you for your time.

Christiana,
From the Additional Windows by Thelma Bastow.

I have one mention of a William Barnett and one for John.
William Barnette is shown living in Flourdien Hundred in 1623.
John Barnett is shown living on the Eastern Shore 1623.

For the Ferrar surname I find these entries:
A John Ferrar was deputy to Sir George Yearly . John was the son of Nicholas. John was a merchant and lived with his mother Mary Wodenoth Ferrar. Nicholas Ferrar Jr. was his brother. William was later chancellor in Virginia, although Williams relationship to John was not established here.

In early 1623 Nicholas Ferrar was elected Deputy( it does not say here is if it is Jr. or Sr.

A mention of the William Ferrar house as being the site of an indian massacre of the following persons: Master John England, and his man. John Bel. Henrick Peterson and his wife Alice and William her son and Thomas his man. James Woodshaw, Mary and Elizabeth their maid servants.
There is no mention in this reference to a Humphrey Barnett.

Nor is there anything placing any of them in James Citte.
Hope this aids in your search
Elaine

John,
I do not see an entry for a Benjamin Ray. I took the liberty of checking my early passenger lists to James City and I did not find any Ray surnames prior to 1638.
I'm sorry

Surnames: stephen/stevens
Hi Elaine,

I was wondering if you show any information on the surname Stephen in your information. I have been able to trace back to James A Stephen being born in Va in 1785...but haven't been able to make any connections to any Stephens back from there. I have found some Stephens that have come over...one being I think a Thomas Stephen coming over on a ship calle the 'George'...but am stuck. Does your info show anything about any Stephen/Stevens ....especially coming from Scotland/Ireland? Thankyou for your time on this...it's great that you're willing to help others out!

My grandmother told me before she died that we had ancestors at Jamestown. She never did say which branch of her family so I apologize for the length of the list.
Henderson
Threat/Threatt/Thweat
Davis
Ellis
Ward
Frier/Friar/Fryer
Lott
Daniel/Daniels
Douglas
One other name please, on my grandfather's line, I know an ancestor was born VA in the mid 1700's (Philip/Phillip Deen), not sure where in VA though, nor do I have the names of his parents. If you wouldn't mind also checking for:
Deen/Dean/Deane
Thank you so very much for your help.
