CAPT. GROVE DIES
IN STEPHEN’S CITY.
He Was a Lifelong Resident and
a Foremost Citizen.
CAPAIN (sic) OF NEWTOWN BATTERY.
Was a Former Mayor, Postmaster and
Councilmen of His Native Town.
After an illness of about three weeks Capt. George A. Grove, one of the best known and most prominent citizens of Stephen’s City, this county, died at his home in that place at three o’clock yesterday morning. His death was due to a general break-down, incident to his advanced years.
The funeral will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, afternoon from the Lutheran Church in Stephen’s City, Rev. J. S. Strickler, assisted by Rev. H. A. Brown, wll officiate and interment will be made in the Green Hill cemetery in that place.
Mr. Grove had been a life-long resident of Stephen’s City. He was born there in 1816 and was therefore in his 86th year. Mr. Grove was a son of the late John W. Grove who was born in Stephen’s City in 1797 and died in 1873, having himself resided there all his life. The mother of the deceased was Jane Young who came from Germany when seven years of age and settled in Frederick County. His father served in the war of 1812 and was one of the magistrates of Frederick County.
For over 125 years of the Grove’s have been prominently identified with Stephen’s City, son succeeding father for four generations in taking their places as leading, substantial businessmen of the community.
Capt. Grove was a wagon maker by trade, a vocation he followed for half a century. When the Civil War broke out he served in the Confederate army and was the commanding officer of the Newtown Artillery, known as Battery C., in Johnston’s army. He participated in the first battle of Manassas as captain of the battery and continuing as its commanding officer until the organization was disbanded in the winter of 1862. The battery was re-organized afterwards with Capt. Cutshaw at its head and C. M. Barton, first lieutenant, and was consolidated with Carpenter’s Battery. Prior to the war he was several years a captain of a volunteer company.
After the war Capt. Grove held various offices in his native town. He served as postmaster in Stephen’s City for four years, having been appointed during Garfields administration, he was also a town councilman, a former mayor, and, at the time of his death, was president of the Green Hill Cemetery Company of Stephen’s City, and in various other ways he has served his town in the public capacities. Capt. Grove also took a deep interest in the affairs of his native state and being well posted and a close observer with good judgment, he was entertaining as a conversationalist. Politically he was a conservative republican.
In 1846 Capt. Grove married Miss Frances Widdows, daughter of Robert Widdows. She died some years ago. He is survived by these children: Mr. O. P. Grove, the well-known stove dealer of this city; Mrs. B. F. Williams, of the county’ William B. Grove, of Washington, D.C.; F. C. Grove, merchant at Stephensons, this county, and George Grove, of Illinois.
