Hi there,
I've tried high and low to find more information about my great grandfather and who his parents were. His name was Sparrel Perdue. In some listings it lists him as J. Sparrel Perdue. He was born Dec 10 1869 in Virginia, and died April 13 1940. He is buried in Burnt chimney Franklin county Virgina. I'm assuming he might be born in Franklin county since he died there. He married Lula Bell Robertson and she was born Oct 18 1885 and died April 19 1957. They had several children though I don't know of them all. Here are the ones I know of. Charles Thomas my grandfather, and his siblings.. John Jacob, Roy Calvin, Oakey Giles, and Goldie. If anybody has any information about Sparrel and his parents I would gladly appreciate it! Thanks!

You are welcome. Sorry I could not find more, but if any of her relatives died after 1990, I can get those obits for you right away on my Newsbank subscription. Just let me know a name and exact date of death for the Roanoke area. I can try for others in other areas too, but most newspapers on my site do not go as far back as the Roanoke Times does.
For those prior to 1990, I can tell you how to get them free.
Shelley

Shelley,
Thanks for your reply. Just a few weeks ago I found some of my answers. James Henry Hudson was born in 1861. Thus not on census of 1860. It turns out his Father died in 1862 in the Civil War. I now have his name, dates, and wife. She was Head of Household in 1870 and my Great GF shows there. By 1880 she was remarried, and he was living and working on a neighboring farm.
His parents were Henry C "Harry" Hudson 1836-1862 and his Mother Elvira Basham (b. 1834). Her line is well established. Henry's Father however is somewhat cloudy. All in Franklin County. I feel that his Father was born elsewhere and moved there sometime before his son's birth.
Thanks again,
Chaz Robertson

When you see something you want to print, size it by zooming in or out til you get the whole picture, then hit "print screen. Minimize that screen and go to your paint program and "paste" it in.From there you can crop and edit it and date it! Good luck!

Here is what I have from the Franklin County Cemetery Book:
You can try ordering some of these obits from the Roanoke Library,virginiaroom@gmail.com , they will take 10 at a time and they are free as of last I checked, but it may take them a few weeks to get them to you. If they don't have them ,you might try calling the Franklin County Library as they have newspapers on reels from 1940 onwards and they look the up for a small fee. Their phone number is 540-483-3098, ask for Dorothy Hodges, genealogist.

Here are what burial dates I could find:

James Henry Hudson June 12, 1945 ( it says husband of Anna Maud)
Anna Maud Hudson Sept. 10, 1962
L.M. Hudson ( Lou?) birth 10-14-1856 died Mar. 7, 1934
Charles Oscar Hudson June 11, 1962
Lester Harry Hudson, book shows AUGUST 18,1932
That's all I could find, perhaps some of those obits will help you to trace backwards in time! Good luck
Shelley

But we'll hear his tales no longer, for old Bill has passed away, And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today. He was just a common soldier, and his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us we may need his like again. For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldiers part Is to clean up all the troubles that others often start. If we cannot give him honor, while he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage, at the end of his days. Perhaps a simple notice in the paper that would say, "Our Country is in mourning, cause a Soldier passed away."

Luther (Luke) Loudermilk, 82, of Rocky Mount, passed away Friday December 1, 2006. Mr. Loudermilk was retired from the military having served in the US Navy during WWII. He was assigned to the Pacific Fleet stationed aboard the USS Detroit. After retiring from the military in 1965 he moved to Franklin County and worked in various positions until he again retired at the age of 72. He was a life long member of the VFW, American Legion DAV and Masonic Lodge 201 AF & AM. He was born February 11, 1924 in Brazil, Indiana to the late James W. and Pearl Smith Loudermilk and was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Bernice Arrington Loudermilk, one son, Gary Luther Loudermilk, two brothers and one sister.
In my book ( Franklin County, VA Cemeteries ) I have a Martin McGhee who died on June 7, 1851, born on Dec 22, 1774. It also says husband of Sarah Heard. Can this be him?
If so, he is buried in Davis/Martin Cemetery,652. This is all is says and I think the 652 refers to the road the cemetery may be on or off of. If you call the Franklin County Circuit Clerk's office and ask for wills, they may be able to tell you if he had one . To order wills, it used to be 50 cents per page just a couple years ago. You will need the man's name and date of death.

Clerk of the Circuit Court
Teresa J. Was born and lived in Lynchburg (Campbell County) for many years. I have been trying to find an address for this Church so that I could write to them to see if they have any records. I have found only one family living in Franklin county all from John Jessee born about 1799 I'm guessing that he was born in VA. I'm trying to find out if I'm related to this branch because my 6th great grandfather is John Jessee. The 1850 census record from floyd county lists that he was born in Franklin county in abt 1821.

Sheila How do you know he was buried at Liberty ME Church in Pittsylvania County? I have looked in the books that have church, public and private cemeteries and have never seen his name. Do you know if his wife Emily McGhee Mayhew was burried there also? Yes I do know that he was living with Jas Ed Brown in 1880 as a farm laborer. Not sure where he died. I have asked Virginia Library for a death certificate on the date of death but they have no records. Thank you for the information.

Funny, I saw this name and had to respond. Your John C Mayhew lived with my 2nd great grandfather, Jas Ed Brown, in 1880. I'm assuming he was a farm laborer.

If you have the date of death, which you do, it may be that you can peruse the old Rke Times a day or two after that date, but he would likely not have had an obit there, if he were in Franklin County.

My advice would be to contact the Franklin County Courthouse or the Franklin County Historical Society...to ask if there were any newspapers from Franklin County...that would be available somewhere to search through. I've looked for old Rocky Mt papers and had no luck, myself, but that is the best advise I can offer. I do hope you the best of luck.

:) Sheila

Actually my replies were regarding johnyoung1961's original post concerning his ancestor. But thanks for the info anyway. By the way, I did find a card from a Compiled Service Record listing Jubal Young as a member of Company B, 5th Battalion Virginia Reserves. This doesn't prove it, but makes it likely that he was a guard at a prison camp at the time of his death per the affidavit provided in Martha's pension application. Reserve troops were used as PW camp guards. The only info besides his unit is the fact that he received an issue of clothing on October 5, 1864.
Bob, Your person could order his death cert from Richmond for $12 and see if there is a notation he was a veteran OR you could email the Roanoke library to see if they have an obit on this guy for that date OR you could put up a memorial for him on findagrave.com and see if a volunteer will take a photo of his headstone. Some headstones show they were in the Civil War.
Here is the link to the Roanoke library, but there is no guarantee they will have one, but can check for you. They are very nice about this and the service is free:
virginiaroom@gmail.com

Shelley

Since it's not my family and I was just trying to help a little I didn't bother. I was able to read the handwritten affidavit well enough to see that she was Jubal's wife. I wonder if the Jubal you found in the cemetery record was their son? Someone allowed me to use their password for FOLD3 sveral months ago and I was able to download all my family CW Compiled Service Records and a bunch of Census records. Worked great, good quality. Thanks for the tip though!

You have yourself a great Easter as well!

Bob
Try to print it off first or did you do that already? Sometimes when it prints, it is more readable.
Also , if some one has FOLD 3 , you can get those same records off that site and they are more legible.
good luck! and Happy Easter.
Shelley

Looks like Mrs. Young didn't get her pension. Some of the records are too pixelized to read clearly. Apparently he was supposedly a guard at Danville Prison as a member of a reserve regiment. Someone may have put the wrong name down (James).

Try looking for him here and his wife's pension:

http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/using_collections.asp#_gu...

He would have been only 12 years old at the start of the War. Could be Junior. The NPS soldier files don't show any Jubal Youngs serving in Virginia regiments.
