http://memory.loc.gov/ resulting from a “Brodie Search”): (1) Letter18 Aug 1772 from Amos Strettell of Philadelphia, PA to George Washington, of Mt.Vernon, VA: the letter describes Insurance Strettell completed for Washington re: cargo on board the Brig Fairfax from Virginia to Barbados commanded by Samuel Brodie, Mr. (2) Letter 12 Jan 1773 from George Washington of Mt.Vernon, VA “Sir: In July last I ship’d 273 Barr’es of Flour in the Brig Fairfax, Saml. Brodie, Master, for Barbadoes; or, in case of bad markets there, to Jamaica and consign’d them to Mr. D. Jenifer Adams who went in the Vessell and was part owner thereof… (3) From the “Diaries of George Washington” same source page 120 for the date of 22 July 1772: “Daniel Jenifer Adams (b.1751), only son of Josias and Ann Jenifer Adams of Charles County, Md., had been taken into a trading partnership with GW, John Carlyle, and Samuel Brodie. Flour from GW’s and Carlyles’s mills was to be shipped to the West Indies on board the brig Fairfax, captained by Samuel Brodie. Adams was to be the surpercargo, or agent, who would accompany the flour and decide on which island at what price it should be sold.”
