Several years ago the Journalism Department of Ohio University was putting together a documentary on Milton Holland. The head of the department came to Panola Co TX and interviewed many people including myself. His department had done exhaustive research trying to determine which Holland was the father of Milton, but they could find no definitive proof. I personally do not think Bird was his father because Bird stayed completely away from Spearman who was a slave trader and a highly unprincipled man. The only slave I can find a record of Bird having was a male, probably his valet, who was the same age as Bird. When Bird came to Panola County and got the three boys that were half Holland, or so it was said, he accompanied them to Ohio and enrolled them in school and arranged for them to be apprenticed to some trade. The mystery is that at the same time as the boys show up on the Ohio census, there was a female named Nancy, also born in TX, who was living near the boys. The Ohio University Journalism Department reached out to professional researchers, but it could never be determined if Bird had also brought her to Ohio. One could guess that he did because there was no one else from TX in that same area except for Nancy and the three boys.
