My book, "From Virginia to Texas: A History of the Elam Family with Emphasis on the Ancestors and Descendants of John H. Elam of Mississippi and Texas," was published by Gateway Press, Baltimore, in November 2001. (xii + 395 pp., 96 figures, bibliography, 7 x 10, hard cover, $44.60).
It has 8 chapters: 1. Elam: What's in the Name? 2. Pioneer Elams of Virginia 3. Elam Families in Virginia in the Eighteenth Century 4. Elams Families in South Carolina and Georgia in the Nineteenth Century 5. The Elams of Central Mississippi in the Nineteenth Century 6. Pioneer Elams in Texas 7. John H. Elam and Descendants 8. Conclusion
Much of Chapters 2 and 3 deals with Elams in the Bermuda Hundred region of Henrico/Chesterfield counties, includes summaries of lineages of Elams throughout the counties, c. mid-1600s to the era of the American Revolution, and denotes problems of research and suggested areas for further study. Research was in Virginia and elsewhere between 1993 and 2001. Use was made of previous writings on the history of the family and records in the Archives of Virginia and county sources, including Chesterfield and surrounding counties. I am a retired professor of history (Ph.D., 34 years teaching and administrative experience).
