I have been researching this family and have made good progress. It has been 9 years since you posted your inquiry, and I am wondering if you still need the information. If you have any information regarding this James Brockwell's family in the UK, I would be very interested. I look forward to hearing from you.

The Fuqua and Pearman families were neighbors of my grandparents, Adam and Edna Hayre Gearheart, in Charles City. Ed Fuqua helped my grandmother when my grandfather passed away in 1935. In fact, my aunt still has the bedroom set Mr. Fuqua gave her and her kids.

The property my family owns today, where my father was raised, was sold to my grandfather, Zavan Gearheart, by Mr. Wills.

Not sure if related to any Charles City Gregorys but my grandfather was Leslie F. Gregory b. 1888, m. Alice Elva Liggan, his father was Joseph Gregory, b 1864 m. Daisy (?). Joseph's father was James W. Gregory, b. 1835 m. Caroline. I found all this information on 1880, 1910 census reports which listed them as Henrico County resident (Fairfield area).

Does anyone know if James W. Gregory is related to the John Gregory I ran across in Charles City's message board?

thanks
Sharon Gregory Moore

Sally I am also searching the Wells Family of Charles City County. My ancestor is Elizabeth Wells, first wife of Allen Rodney Bernard. Allen was born 1795 in Fluvanna County & died 1866 in Nansemond. He was a Methodist minister. He and Elizabeth Wells, his first wife, had a son Samueal Allen Bernard who was a doctor in Bertie County, NC. I think Elizabeth died very young between 1817 & 1820. Do you by any chance know of her parents? Maybe she was Braxton's relative? Thanks for any help or leads to other Wells researchers. Jim Utley

I'm looking for more information (any really) about Robert F Tucker (1652-1704) born, lived, and died in Charles City, VA. He married Elizabeth Coleman (1657 -?) and had kids. Specifically, I'm looking for information on their ancestry--have the downline okay, but more wouldn't hurt.

Some posts within the community here connect him to Thomas and Edy (Hentige) Tucker, citing the book "Colonial Virginians and their Maryland Relatives" but those don't link up and the book never states descendants of Thomas and Edy.

I haven't been able to get my hands on a copy of "The Tucker Band" or "Tucker Trails..." which are apparently the family research "Bibles" for this line--so anyone willing to transcribe/scan pages you'd forever have a willing slave if you every needed any SoCal, desert research done.

In 1771, a Martin Martin of Westover Parish, Charles City County, bought Charles City County land from Robert and Frances Coley. That same year, Daniel Martin of New Kent County bought Charles City County land from Isham and Hannah Coley. The properties adjoined. This is per a Charles City Co. deed book at the LVA. Has anybody heard of any of these people?

I am looking for the parents of Martin F. Martin who was born betw. 1770 and 1710 in the CC-JC-New Kent County area. Martin F.is found near Toano in JC Co. in the early 1800's and by about 1815 had migrated with his wife, Lucy Clarke Williams Martin (they wed in Henrico Co.)and young family to Livingston Co., KY.

John Ammons listed on the personal tax of 1790 and 1800 is a probable ancestor who was located in Charles City County throughout those years. We believe he may be the paternal parent or other close relative of Henry Morris Ammons (Rev. Henry Morris Ammons) who was born ca. 1808 and associated with the Hopewell Methodist Church. Henry Ammons was married to Susan Ann Adams the daughter of Henry Adams of Charles City. Two sons fought in the Civil War and they were Henry Walker Ammons and George Whitfield Ammons. Henry Walker was married to Mary Gill who was the daughter of John Gill. Any information about John Ammons or the later Ammons family line will be appreciated.

Re: ROACH Spelling

Dear Sir,

You may be interested in the following handwritten passage which appears (for no clear reason) in the back of the Charles City Militia Book (Library of Virginia Archives). The passage is somewhat difficult to read, but appears to say the following:
Roach
The grandfather to Moody Harris was an Englishman imported by Col. Hill of Shirley, grandfather to the present Chas. Carter of Shirley; during his servitude he habit'd with a free negro and by her had several children who (took as themselves the name)(passage crossed out) were call'd by the name of Roach after their natural father. After the expiration of servitude he intermarried with a woman by the name of Royster - who was also and english woman, and a servant to the aforemention'd Colo. Hill, and by her he had several children who grew up and became respectable citizens held com'm both civil and military. The natural children by the black woman, knowing the affinity by lineage (crossed out) would take the liberty often when they found (end of passage).

I know one researcher located a will in England of the father of this John Roach (Rock), but can't put my hands on it at the moment.

I hope this information is helpful to you.
Judy Ledbetter

This is the correct Wells: Alexander Braxton Wells was married to Eliza A. Wills and she had a sister married to Barlow. I have his portrait and that of his daughter (my great grandmother), and his first wife (Eliza). I can send you a copy if you email me.

I was cleaning out my emails and I missed your response. One of the Barlow family members wrote me that the Barlow's lived on the original Wills farm/plantation.

Thank you so much for this burial information.

Sally Connelly

Would it be possible for someone in your family that still attends, at this church, to see if church records exist as far back as 1817? I have a relative, John Pleasant Pearman and Sarah Fuqua, that were married in Charles City County in 1817 by William Willis. I would like to know if the church might have records on this so that I might find out if any of His or Her family, especially parents, might be listed in those records. This particular step has been my "Brick Wall" for about eight years.I will be glad to pay any postage and copying expenses.

Virgle L. Chappell, vchapp@aol.com
You may already have this info:

THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF THOMAS (1) CHAPPELL
1658 Mar: Thomas (1) Chappell, after only 23 years in his new home, dies in Charles City Co.
1658 Apr 4; His Will of Record follows:
"Edd Firzgarald exa'ed and swore that shortly before the death of Thos: Chappell the dep't (deputy) was at his house, and the said Chappell sent for Mr fferd Aston and before him and the dep't Declared, as his last will, that he gave and bequeathed to each of his children two breeding cattell, and his lands to his eldest son and his heires for ever and the rest of his estate to his wife, and in case of misuse of the children the said mr Aston was to be overseer of them and their estates and further sayth not.
Edward Fitzgarald Jur in Cur Apr 4, 1658 Test H Pryse Cl"
(CC Crt Ord Bk 1655-65, p159)
"Ferdinando Aston ex'aed sworne saith and deposeth the very same in each particular, and further saith not, onely that the sd Chappell the day before his death sent again for the dep't and desired his care of the sd children and their estates. Ferd Aston Jur in Cur Apr 4, 1658 Teste Hoel Pryse Cl Rec Apr 27, sequ."
(CC Court Order Bk p159)
It will be noted that at his death, Thomas had other children and it would suggest one or more other sons (Thomas the eldest). Thomas (2) was to receive all his fathers land.
Young Thomas (2) had evidently been apprenticed to Jo Richards, but was released the same year as his father's death. He was 18-20 at the time, as evidenced by the guardianship of Ferd Aston. His widow was to remarry, as shown by the following entries.
1658 Oct 4, Possible date of the death of Thomas (1) Chappell
1658 Thomas (2)* Chappell: Release from Apprenticeship.
"It is ordered that Corne and Cleathing according to custom be forthwith paid to Thos Chappell (who was) late servant to Jo Richards Dec'D out of the s'd Deced't's estate by the exe'r or Adm'er thereof also w'th Costs"
(Charles City Court Ord Bk p36)
1658/59 abt: Thomas' (1) widow remarried to Walter Darnham. Since there were minors involved, the court reminded Darnham of his responsibility to his step children.
"Ordered that Walter Darnham who married the relict of Thos: Chappell, dec'd, satisfy and pay unto the deced'ts orphans their severall dues and porcons according to law and the nuncupative will of the Deced't testified by mr Edd Ffitzgarald and mr fferd: Aston and that he maintain and educate them till their full age, and give good caution for performance thereof."
(CC Ct Ord Bk 1655-65 p158)
Though Thomas was probably of age, 21yrs, at the time, there were other children who were not. Therefore, this ruling was necessary. The Va. society saw fit to grant extra court protection for orphans of the time. The following Charles City Court order is found on record.
Charles City Court records show: "Ordered that all possessors of orphanes estates shall give such security for the same as the Co'rt shall think suffic't, or else that such estates be sold at an Outcry and deposited into such sure hands as the Co'rt shall appoint."
(Ibid p158)

Ref: Charles City Co Court Records
Ref: Land Patent, Thomas (2) Chappell Oct 20, 1665
Ref: Phillip Chappell
Ref: Res & Comp by Ron & V L Chappell

If you are still looking I may have information to help you.

Braxton Wills was born sometime prior to 1826 (probably in the 1800 range). He died sometime prior to 1850. He married Eliza A. (last name unknow). Eliza A. was born in Virginia in 1809 according to the 1850 census. They had three children: a son Peter Wills; a daughter Anna T. who married John M. Barlow; and a daughter Eliza B. (Braxton) who married Alexander B. Wills.

I believe he (as well as Eliza A) are buried just off Old Beech Hollow Road in Charles City. That was their home place at the time of his death.

Hope this helps.

Re: AMMONS Family

This may not all be precise in names but this is how it was written down on an old paper from around 1903. Rebecca Ammons married William Thomas Morriss. They had children Tabitha Ann, Susan, George and William. I am going to have to go back and read this again, I've gotten something mixed up, but the name Whitfield pops up a few times in the line, as someone married a Marston and then whose child married a Bacon and their child was William Whitfield Bacon. Tabitha Ann Morriss married James Anderson Smith who was born 1806.

This does not answer your questions, but just to let you know, there was a William Hunt in James City Co., VA (JCCo) who, in 1688, attended to the estate of David Davidson (who had died in JCCo 1687), on behalf of David's widow Sarah Davidson (and a Thomas Hamblin assisted William Hunt). I have often wondered if Mrs. Sarah Davidson had the maiden name of Hunt (or Hamblin).

It seems that there were at least two early William Hunts in this area of VA (and I don't know how/if they were related). The Davidson land in JCCo (just west of the Chicahominy River, in an area that was known as Pease Hill) became part of Charles City Co., VA in 1720.

The Library of VA has them on microfilm, based on their website. Also, my local LDS Family History Center has a book with these transcribed and indexed. Have you tried a local FHC in your area? If they don't have the above book, they can also order the microfilm for you to use at their facility (costs about $3.50, and they keep it there for about 30 days or so for your use). The LDS website has an index of what they have on film, but most of it has to be ordered and mailed from Utah to your local FHC facility.
