Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Robert's parents or how he came to Buckingham County. There is a marriage record for a Robert Evans and a Katy Daniel but I'm not sure if it the Robert Evans I'm working on. One item that leads me to think it is the right Robert is that Elisha named one of his sons George Daniel Evans which could reflect his mother's maiden name.

At times, I have researched other related people in my Evans line. I traced a Ellis Evans to Caswell County, North Carolina. There was an Elisha Evans living in that county around 1800. I do have a relative named Elisha Evans but he was never in Caswell County, NC. My Evans family and an Estes family intermarried for two generations. The Estes were all descendants of a Elisha Estes. I know my ggggrandfather was named for his grandfather Elisha Estes.

You mentioned that your Elisha Evans had a father named Robert Evans. Do you know anything on Robert's parents? Robert is a common name in the family around 1760.

To help answer your question. My ancestors are from Sullivan County Tn. Sullivan Co. Tn (then still NC) was established primarily from Washington Co. Tn (then NC) including part of Sullivan Co. including North of Holston and Carter Valley settlements was considered part of Va and Tennesseeans were taxed by Old Fincastle, Montgomery and Washington Co.'s rather than NC. In 1784 the illfated stste of Franklin was created (records now mostly lost or duplicated in Tn records) and in 1787. Hawkins Co. was created from the majority of Sulllivans territory (and then some). In 1790 NC ceded its western lands and tennessee became part of the Territory Souht of the Ohio River, which it remained until 1796 and statehood. Sullivan Co. remained generally the same from 1787 until now.
The Kentucky-Tennessee boundary, intended to be 36deg 30', was run toofar north in 1779-1780 by Virginia surveyors. Ky finally accepted this erroneous Walker Line in early 1820, but significant parts of the boundary remained uncertain until a survey completed in 1859. Some settlers in the disputed strip were uncertain which state they lived in. By contrast, the Kentucky-Tennessee line went west of the Tn river was surveyed in 1819 essentially on 36 deg 30'. It will be easier to understand if you find map guide to the federal census from the 1700 to mid 1800's. Many relations were born in NC and it became part of TN. Or born in TN and it became part of Ky or Va. Tha maps make it easier to pinpoint a dateline.

The will of Adrian Anglin of Buckingham County, Virginia.

I am not related to this person but I did abstract his will.

In the Henry Co., VA Chancery Cause: WILLIAM HAYS v. PHILIP ANGLIN

Page 31: The will of Adrian Anglin of Buckingham County, Virginia. Names sons: William and John each get 1 shilling. Daughters: Ann Cunningham, Mary Ann Asher, Mary Webb, Sarah Hays, each get 1 shilling. Names Ledy Goolsley to get 1 shilling, but did not state that she was his daughter; the general form indicates that this omission of “Daughter” was just an error. To Daughter, Elizabeth Anglin one cow & calf … son Phillip Anglin one cow & calf … to my two sons Adrian Anglin & Joseph Anglin the tract of land where I now live containing 120 acres … after the death of their Mother … and all the rest of my estate to my wife Mary Anglin … she is appointed Executrix and my son Adrian Anglin as Executor … dated 13 Jun 1772. Signed by Adrian Anglin, witness: James Brown, his signature; Stephen [T] Renno, his mark; Charles Perrow, his signature.

Page 30: Will of Adrian Anglin proved on 13 Oct 1777 in Buckingham Co.

Page 29: The Inventory and Appraisal of the estate of Adrian Anglin of Buckingham Co., VA on 9 Mar 177[8] for £145, 7s, 6d.

Source: Henry County (Va.)
Hi,

I am hoping to find information about my GGG Grandfather, Thomas Honeybus/Hanibus, a former slave. He was born in Virginia in about 1827. His wife was Martha Ann Ellis, born in 1834 in Kentucky. I believe he was last owned in Missouri by a Chas Tyler (born in Kentucky), whose parents John and Catherine Tyler came to Missouri from Virginia about 1848. Do you know if your Hannabass family owned slaves and if so, are there any records of a slave named Thomas? Thank you and best of luck in your research.

Sasha

I am glad to share information with you. I am interested in the family of William Alexander CREWS & Sarah Elizabeth JONES because in the 1870 census there is a Wade NEWTON age 52 living in the household. I believe he is my uncle but I am not clear as to why he was living with the CREWS family. I show Sarah Elizabeth JONES was born in Campbell Co and died 6 Mar 1898. Do you know her parents? I am wondering if she had a connection to the NEWTON family.
We are researching Benjamin CREWS, his ancestors and descendants. We are particularly interested to have information on his parents, wife Mary or siblings. There were three CREWS families at this time in Buckingham County. The others moved westward, However, is there a possibility they were related since Louisa County, where Benjamin was born is not distant?

Our line continues with Benjamin's son,
William Alexander CREWS and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth JONES
William was born July 1823 in Buckingham County in the James River District. He died March 5, 1904. Elizabeth was born in 1838 and died before 1900.

their son, Benjamin JONES CREWS m Lillie SPENCER. Benj. was
born June 7, 1853 and died April 23, 1937 in E.D. 37 in Buckingham County. Lillie was born in 1863 in Buckingham County. Her parents were William O and Mildred SPENCER.

Their daughter Nellie SPENCER CREWS m Thomas Henry CUNNINGHAM. Nellie was born in 1887 and died 1962. After Thomas died she remarried. Thomas was the son of Robert and Julia CUNNINGHAM. He was born in Jam 7, 1886 and died in Sept 9,1947. He and his three brothers owned adjacent farms on the James River.

We shall appreciate additional information on any of these people.
I am searching for the parents of Mary Catherine "Kitty" Garrett that was born about 1820. She was married to John "Jack" Shumaker and had the following children:

George Edward Shumaker
Margaret Frances Shumaker (married Preston Swope Garrett)
Mary Shumaker
James Shumaker
Sidney Harrison Shumaker
Possibly John Wiley Shumaker

Mary Catherine was counted in the 1860 census for Buckingham but John remarried in Charlotte County in 1866 and was listed as widowed. A Robert Garrett was living with John & Mary Catherine Shumaker in the 1860 census but no relation is listed. Any help would be appreciated.

I have been researching the Gannaway familyas well. My stepfather was Finis William Gannaway. His father George William Gannaway was 3/4 Blackfoot Indian and his mother Sarah Catherine Wormsley was full blood Blackfoot. Or so we were told. I am doing this research for my younger half sister the daughter of Finis and my mother. I would appreciate any assistance you could give. As I am stumped at his Great grandfather on the Gannaway side. The Wormsley family peters out a few generation later but carries on through the Duncan line that intersects with Wormsley.

My research of the Watson line begins with Lord Jonathan Watson b October 18, 1702 in England and unnamed wife, as parents of William b c1755, and George Watson, both born in Scotland. William and George married sisters Fanny and Comfort Wilkerson. William and Fanny had 10 children: James B b April 9, 1780, Wilkerson b July 28, 1782, Mary b September 14, 1784, William b October 3, 1786, George E b March 28, 1789, Daniel P b March 14, 1791, Nancy b January 28, 1793, Thomas b June 28, 1795, Powhatan b September 6, 1797, and Caroline b October 27, 1799. James B Watson b 1780 married Mary Elizabeth McGeehee b 1784 in Amherst Virginia on July 21, 1801. This is the line that my husband is descended from also. Sharon

And Frances Miles Saunders b 1766 in Hanover County, Virginia and died November 1822 in Bedford County, Virginia. If you are looking for any information on your GGGrandfather and their children and descendents I can also help you with that. Sharon

As agreed I will give you some information on the families that you asked about and then you can decide if you think it is worthwhile to go into more depth. You asked about Elizabeth Ann DUNCAN. She was a daughter of Matthias DUNCAN and Sarah "Sally" DUNKUM. (The other person who responed to your request and stated that his grandmother was Carrie Belle DUNKUM, well, Sarah DUNKUM was Carrie Belle DUNKUM's Great-Great Aunt. This gentleman and I are cousins.) Sarah DUNKUM was daughter of Benjamin DUNKUM and Phoebe JENKINS. This couple were my third Great Great Grandparents. Matthias DUNCAN was the son of Jacob DUNCAN, Jr and Sally AYRES. This couple were also my third Great Great Grandparents. Matthias DUNCAN had been married before he married Sarah DUNKUM. He had married first to a Miss Berryman and had one daughter, Mary Anna DUNCAN. Mary Anna DUNCAN married Edwin NEWTON and this couple were my second Great Great Grandparents. Elizabeth Ann DUNCAN was married to William Joseph FLIPPEN. He was son of Elijah FLIPPEN and Prudence BAUGHAN. I also have FLIPPEN ancestors, therfore William Joseph FLIPPEN was my third cousin four generations removed. I have not given you and dates nor places but I will be glad to do so if you are interested. I would like to hear from you to share information.

Ruby Talley Smith rubygem@aol.com

Gulielmus COLEMAN Jr and his wife Nancy GUTHRIE

Gulielmus COLEMAN, Jr b 29 Jan 1789 d 22 Oct 1856 Buckingham Co, VA was s/o Gulielmus Sr & Eleanor TURNER. The first wife of Gulielmus COLEMAN, Jr was Nancy Ann Garnett GUTHRIE b 1 Feb 1783, d/o William GUTHRIE & Rebecca NOEL. He married her on 12 Jul 1812 in Cumberland Co, VA. Nancy Ann Garnett GUTHRIE was a widow at the time she married Gulielmus. She had been married to a man named WHITE and had one daughter, Sarah Howard WHITE who married John Stainback COLEMAN, the s/o Gulielmus COLEMAN, Sr & Eleanor TURNER. As far as I know no one has a problem with the above but the problem comes about when Gulielmus COLEMAN, Jr married a second time. All agree that he married a Nancy GUTHRIE, the problem is in WHICH Nancy. Some say he married on 20 Mar 1826 in Cumberland Co, VA to Nancy Turner GUTHRIE b 30 Mar 1806 d 4 Jul 1878 the d/o of William GUTHRIE, Jr & Elizabeth Turner COLEMAN. Others say he married Nancy GUTHRIE b 20 Apr 1800 d 4 Jul 1878, the d/o Henry GUTHRIE & wife unknown. Note that the date of death is the same for both but the date of birth is different. My question is does anyone know the parents of Nancy GUTHRIE who married Gulielmus COLEMAN?

Ruby Talley Smith rubygem@aol.com

Hi, Henry Clay was my greatgrandfather. How much do you know about him. Etta Wilkerson, his first wife, disappeared in 1910. Do you know anything about her? I last traced her to NC, living with Henry Clay and Thomas Hubbard, in May 1910. It seems like all the Kidd's in Buckingham are very closed mouth about Etta and what really happened to her. I do have pictures of Henry Clay as a younger man with my grndmother and her sister. Please reply to me.

Ruby,

I think John Coleman may have been a son of Samuel Coleman by his second marriage to Elizabeth _____. Attached below is what I have been able to collect on Nancy Ann (Wright) Coleman and her husband Samuel Coleman. This is taken from Sorting Some of the Wrights of Southern Virginia, Part VII: 1779 John Wright of Prince Edward County.

Robert N. Grant
15 Campo Bello Court
Menlo Park, CA 94025
RNGrant@grantandgordon.com

Excerpt from Sorting Some of the Wrights of Southern Virginia, Part VII: 1779 John Wright of Prince Edward County:

D.	Nancy Or Ann (Wright) Coleman, Her Husband Samuel Coleman, And Her Descendants

Nancy or Ann (Wright) Coleman was a daughter of 1779 John Wright of Prince Edward County and Anne (Pryor) Wright. (1779 John1)

The Douglas Register listed the marriage of Samuel Coleman and Ann Wright, both of Goochland Parish, on March 30, 1756, as well as the following births:

"Samuel Coleman & Ann Wright a Daughter named Jeanie born Jul: 18, 1756. Baptized 1757 Mar. 6. p.50.
. . . .

Sam: Coleman & Ann Wright a Daughter named Jeanie born Jun: 22, 1759. Baptized 1762 May 10. p.63.
. . . .

Sam: Coleman & Ann Wright a Son named David born Jun: 6, 1762. Baptized 1762 May 10. p.63."

The baptizing of two children as Jeanie indicates that Jeanie #1 probably died before the birth of Jeanie #2 on June 22, 1759, and the parents simply transferred the name to the next child, a common practice at that time of high infant mortality.

The will of 1779 John Wright dated March 18, 1775, and probated on April 20, 1779, at Prince Edward County, Virginia, W.B. 1/218, referred to his grandchildren Ann and David Coleman, clearly indicating that he had a daughter _____ (Wright) Coleman:

". . . . Item I give and bequeath unto my grandDaughter Ann Coleman my negro girl named sue to the Heirs of her body lawfully begotton also one feather Bed and if she shold fail of such Heir than the said negro girl sue and her Increase I give unto my grand son David Coleman & his Heirs & if he should die without heir or under the age of twenty one years my will and desire is that the said negro girl sue with her Increase assend & return unto my son James Wright & his Heirs forever . . . ."

Jeanie #2 was probably also known as Ann, as in Jeanne Ann, and, therefore, is the same person as the grandchild Ann named in 1779 John Wright's will. This would also be consistent with Ann being named in the will first and David second as in the order of their births. Since Ann (Wright) Coleman was not named in the will of 1779 John Wright and her children were, she was probably dead before the will was written on March 18, 1775.

In his letter dated March 21, 1987, William C. Wooldridge stated that the will of Samuel Coleman was probated in 1803 in Buckingham County, Virginia. Although the records of Buckingham County were largely destroyed by fire in 1869, an extant copy of the will of Samuel Coleman was published in a genealogical magazine in 1978.

In her letter dated November 16, 1987, Hazel Lee Martin enclosed family group sheets which stated that the will of Samuel Coleman was probated on July 11, 1803, at Buckingham County, Virginia.

In his letter dated December 21, 1988, Ronald D. Coleman stated that a copy of the will of Samuel Coleman was found in 1971 or 1972 by a relative of Sue Booker Christian in the trunk of the Christian family in Virginia and the will provided as follows:

"In the name of God Amen - I Samuel Coleman of the county of Buckingham being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory do make this my last will and testament. This fourth day of April one thousand eight hundred and three.

Item 1 - I lend to my wife during her natural life or widowhood all the lands in my possession (except one hundred and fifty acres, being the land my son William Coleman sold to Robert Harris) and the following negroes, Tom, Charles, Bartley, Dick, Nan, Rose, Cloe, Pattey, Judea, Anica, Jane, Agg, and Dabney with all my stock of every kind, household and kitchen furniture, and after her death to be divided among my children as undermentioned.

2nd - I give unto my two sons Robert and John Coleman and their heirs forever my land below and joining Bent Creek to a branch which runs up to Richard Phelp's line according to valuation.

3rd - I give unto my son-in-law Robert Harris one hundred and fifty acres above mentioned and his heirs forever it being part of that land I purchased of Williamson Burnett, and the balance of the said tract of land with an entry adjoining, I give to my son Drury Coleman to him and his heirs forever.

4th - I give to my son Samuel Coleman all the land above Bent Creek, and another tract below said Creek and above the branch that runs to Richard Phelp's line, to him and his heirs forever. I also give unto my sons Samuel and Drury Coleman thirty pounds each as soon as they come of age, to be levyed out of my estate.

5th - I give unto my son, James Coleman one negro man named Frederick. I give unto my daughter Ann Wooldridge five shillings cash. I give unto my daughter Liza Coleman fifty pounds cash, and after the death of my wife Elizabeth Coleman, my wish is that the negroes I lend to my wife namely, Tom, Charles, Bartley, Dick, Nan, Rose, Cloe, Patty, Judea, Anaca, Jane, Agg, and Dabney and their increase to be equally divided amongst my children, namely George Coleman, Sally Pendleton, wife of Mace Pendleton, Mary Pendleton, Frances Harris, wife of Robert Harris, Betsy Coleman, Ann Mourning Coleman and my grandchildren, Benjamin Pendleton had by my daughter Jane to come in as one legatee, and all my stock of every kind with all my household furniture, after the death of my wife, I give to my children that is to possess my negroes. I appoint John Harris, Senr. and Edward Doss Ex'rts to this my last will and testament. In testimony where of I have put my hand and affixed my seal the day and year mentioned.

Samuel Coleman

signed and sealed and delivered in the presence of us
James Doss
Wm. S. Diuguid
Isaac Neighbours

George Diuguid signed the day after the others"

This record identifies the children of Samuel Coleman as follows:

Wife:	Elizabeth (_____) Coleman
Children:	1)	William Coleman,
2)	Robert Coleman,
3)	John Coleman,
4)	Frances (Coleman) Harris,
5)	Drury Coleman, born after April 4, 1782,
6)	Samuel Coleman, born after April 4, 1782,
7)	James Coleman,
8)	Ann (Coleman) Wooldridge,
9)	Liza Coleman,
10)	George Coleman,
11)	Sally (Coleman) Pendleton, wife of Mace Pendleton,
12)	Mary Pendleton,
13)	Betsy Coleman,
14)	Ann Mourning Coleman, and
15)	Jane (Coleman) Pendleton.

Elizabeth (_____) Coleman was Samuel Coleman’s second wife and it is not clear from the will alone which children belonged to the first or second marriage. However, the listing in the complaint in File 578 of Robert and Elizabeth as children of Nancy and of Mayes (or Mace) Pendleton and James Wooldridge as grandchildren of Nancy indicates that the children from the first marriage were Robert Coleman, Ann (Coleman) Wooldridge, Liza Coleman or Betsy Coleman, either of which are contractions for Elizabeth and may be the same person, and Sally (Coleman) Pendleton. The absence of David Coleman from the will indicates that he may have died before April 4, 1803.

In Wright v. Fleming, Lynchburg Superior Court of Law and Chancery File 578, the cross-complaint of Prior Wright, James Wright, John Wright, Robert Coleman, Elizabeth Coleman, Mayes Pendleton, James Wooldridge, and Mary Williamson listed Nancy Coleman as a daughter of 1779 John Wright:

". . . . Your Orators and Oratrices beg leave to state that the said Thomas Wright was never married; That his heirs and next of kin him surviving were his two brothers to wit your Orators Prior Wright and James Wright your Orator John Wright the only child of his brother John Wright who died before him your Orator Robert Coleman and your Oratrix Elizabeth Coleman the children of his sister Nancy Coleman who also died before him, your Oratrix Mary Williamson his sister who was a widow at his death, Mayes Pendleton the grandchild of Nancy Coleman his sister as aforesaid, and James Woolridge also a grandchild of the said Nancy . . . ."

Similarly, in the deposition of John Harris, Sr., dated February 1, 1821, in File 578, Nancy (Wright) Coleman was identified as a sister of Pryor, James, John, and Thomas Wright, the children of 1779 John Wright:

"He was acquainted with Thomas Wright Decd of Campbell County and knows that Pryor Wright, James Wright, was brothers of Thomas Wright Decd and John Wright a Brother's son of John Wright, who was Brother of Thomas Wright Decd, & Robert Coleman & Elizabeth Coleman children and heirs of Nancy Coleman Decd, who was sister of Thomas Wright Decd, James Wooldridge, and Mace Pendleton grandsons of Nancy Coleman Decd who was sister of Thomas Wright Decd of Campbell County."

In her letter dated November 16, 1987, Hazel Lee Martin enclosed family group sheets which listed Samuel Coleman's date of birth as approximately 1728 at Goochland County, Virginia.

From the evidence set forth above and additional evidence set forth below, the children of Nancy Ann (Wright) Coleman and Samuel Coleman were the following:

1)	Jeanie Coleman #1, born on July 18, 1756, at Goochland County, Virginia, and probably died as an infant before June 22, 1759,
2)	Jeanie or Ann (Coleman #2) Wooldridge, born on June 22, 1759, at Goochland County, Virginia,
3)	David Coleman, born on January 6, 1762, at Goochland County, Virginia,
4)	Sally (Coleman) Pendleton, born about 1754 or 1755 at Buckingham or possibly Albemarle County, Virginia,
5)	Robert Coleman, born about 1766 at Buckingham County, Virginia, and
6)	Elizabeth Coleman, born in 1768 at Buckingham County, Virginia.
I just got back from Salt Lake and have decided the misunderstanding about John Ford son of Peter Ford and Judith Maxey was the family stating that John went to Kentucky. So researchers attached John son of Peter and Judith Maxey to Johns living in KY. The John who married Rhoda Garrett was the son of Joel and Mary Garrett Ford. John son of Joel died in Garrard Co. Ky left a will naming Rhoda his wife. He left his inheritance from his father to his children, which later proved this John was his son. Rhoda married Nicolas Green in Garrard Co. after the death of John. The John who married Elizabeth Thommason was the son of Peter and Marie Gaudwin Ford (Fore), this marriage record was handed down in the their family. They lived in Henry Co KY. This marriage was sited in a lot of family histories as being John Ford who was the son of John and Judith Maxey but no one gave a reference to it so it could be proved or disproved. Unfortunately it was sited a lot. I couldn't find a marriage between John Ford and Elizabeth Thomason in any VA, KY or NC records.
With our DNA proof and our traditions handed down our line I am quite certain John Ford in Burke Co., NC is the son of Peter and Judith Maxey Ford.

I am tracking a John Gillam who married Frances"which I have have been speculating may be Robertson" because through land documents they sold land back and forth between earch other and John has a son Robert which is not a common name among Gillams. These took place between late 1600 in Lunenburg and on to Granville NC to mid 1800's, I am confident there is a strong connection between these two familes. Do you have a lot of info on the Robertsons. Search for Gillams in close proximity...lets stay intouch

Vaney Partin? Sam Maynard Mary Cleghorn 1880 Baxter, AR

I've been looking for Vaney Partin or Mary Cleghorn who may have given birth to Lillian Florence Maynard, 1880, Baxter, Arkansas, father Sam Maynard b. 1856. Lillian's death certificate says her mother is Vaney Partin, but I've been told Mary Cleghorn was her mother.

I've found this census from 1880, in Baxter, Arkansas (attached), and wondered if it was James William Maynard, Mary Maynard, and baby Lillian Maynard, it has Mary (from Missouri), listed as their mother. The head of household doesn't make sense, but they are living right next door Sam Maynard's three brothers; John W. Maynard, wife Frances, brothers John M Maynard and Benjamin Franklin Maynard.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Denise
