Bedford Genealogical Society November Meeting

Richmond area author to speak in Bedford:

The Bedford Genealogical Society will hold its November meeting on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 1:30 P.M. The society will be meeting at the Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) campus located at 1633 Venture Blvd., Bedford VA. CVCC is located off of Independence Blvd.. The program will be presented by Connie Lapallo, author of Dark Enough To See the Stars in a Jamestown Sky. She will be coming from Richmond to speak on her book about the “starving time” (1609-1610) of Jamestown, VA. Joan Phippen Peirce, one of the women in the settlement during that terrible winter is Ms. Lapallo’s 13th grandmother. She was married to William Peirce and she along with her young daughter, Jane, were one of the few families to survive the winter of 1609-1610. They remained in Virginia, owned a tobacco plantation near Jamestown and lived to near 70 years of age. Jane married John Rolfe (who had been married to Pocahontas) and after his death, she married Roger Smith. More information on Ms. Lapallo’s book can be found at http://www.connielapallo.com/index.htm. The meeting is free and open to all interested in genealogy or wish to begin research on their family tree. Refreshments will be served. More information can be found at 540-466-4247, www.bedfordgensociety.org or bedfordgensociety@hotmail.com.

I too, would be more interested in hearing about the DORAN family that you're researching.

James Doran, and his wife Margaret Gordon probably arrived in America in 1764, first in Maryland, then in Washington Co, VA around the time of the American Revolution.

Sam Butler
Beaverton,OR

Geneva,
I am also researching a James Gray (b. 1765-67) who married Elizabeth Doran in Augusta County (now Bath) Virginia in 1787.

The name HARVEY has been very common in our family down through the generations. James Gray moved to Russell County, VA in the early 1790's and died there in 1849. James was a relative of a Walter "Rolly/Rawley" Gray who lived on the Clinch River in what is now Scott County, VA, moving there around 1789.

Do any of these names look familiar? Do they connect into your Harvey Gray?

Thanks,
Clark

Hello,

I am descended from Sarah Thompson who married James K Dodge 30 Sept 1840. Sarah was a daughter of Charles Dodge and Hester Spencer.

I have found a Revolutionary War Pension - S3805 for James Thompson. It was paid first in Virginia and then to him in Ohio.

Do you have more information on the Mooney family?

James K Dodge's oldest daughter, Amanda, married a Daniel W. Thompson ( who stated on the 1860 Census that he was born in KY) Is there a connection between the KY and OH Thompsons? Could they all have migrated west from Virginia?

I would be interested in hearing from you.
Thanks, Sam. Alice Zell (my paternal grandmother) was born on May 29, 1903 (not entirely sure about exact year) and died on Feb. 28, 1985. During childhood, she lived in Eagle Rock, Va with at least 9 siblings. She married Orville Augustus Wiley who was from Paint Bank, VA. He was born around 1903 (was age 7 at 1910 census in which his name was spelled Osville). He died in June 1965. Orville had 2 brothers (Otey and Garland) and a sister (Lottie). Also listed in household were William L. Wiley (age 75) and Arnanda Wiley (age 28). I don't know how these individuals were related to my grandfather. Orville and Alice Wiley moved to Roanoke, VA and had 4 children: Grey, Anna (Mae), William Orville, and Gerald Augustus. Gerald was my dad (b 10-4-1936, d 3-16-2005). Only surviving sib is my Uncle Bill.

I am trying to find some information about Joseph Samuel Adams. Here is the information that I currently have:

He was born in 1762, although I don't know where, I assume it is in Botetourt County. He married Elizabeth Segraves on Aug 14, 1792 in Botetourt County. They had several children, all born in Botetourt, so they must have lived there, Children:

William H. born Oct 1793
Mary E. born Aug 1794
John born July 1796
Joseph Samuel Jr born Oct 22 1798 (died Oct 30 1798)
Samuel born Jan 15 1800
Ellen Ann born Mar 1802 (location unk)

Sometime after Samuel was born, they moved to Missouri because several of the children died there.

Samuel Adams (the son) moved back to VA, or stayed there, at some point and lived in Pittsylvania county.

If anyone has any information on Joseph Samuel Adams, Sr, particularly where he came from and his parents, I would be very appreciative.

My 4G-grandfather Charles Beale supposedly died in nearby Alleghany County on 10 Jul 1842. Can anyone tell me where he is buried? Is his grave marked by a tombstone?

At one time, Charles lived in the Iron Gate/Clifton Forge area, which was then in Botetourt County.

There is an inventory and a sale bill related to Charles Beale's estate in the Alleghany court records dated 29 Oct 1842 and 5 Nov 1842, respectively. I would be interested in learning of any specific documentation to back up his date of death, such as a court record or newspaper obituary.

Two of his married daughters were Harriet, wife of Andrew Fudge, and Catherine, wife of William Skeen (Skeene). Both women are buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery near Covington, Virginia.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

John Pitzer Jr. did not leave a will. His property was distrubuted among his relatives. Listed in his distrubution are Nash, Davidson, and William. It does not say that they are sons. William married Lydia in 1870 and Rufus A. was born in 1876. William had 5 wives and 13 children. The first 4 died and he remarried. Nash was a Judge, Davidson a Minister ansd William a Lawyer. Your best bet is check in Boone County, Indiana for records. If you can connect William to one of his brothers they are documented back to John Jr.. John Jr.'s father was John Senior who served in the Rev. War. John Jr. was a sherif of Botetourt and a Captain of the militia in the War of 1812.

Both died Stewardsville, VA. (I have they are buried in Overacre Cemetery - Stewardsville, VA. Looks like the Cemetery moved? or maybe their decendants are in the Botetourt County Cemetery posted online.)

I'm mainly looking for Obituaries. If no one will look at microfilm, what newspapers are in Stewartsville or Vinton or Roanoke? I know of one of Christopher Overacre's descendants recently died in 2/09 - Bernice Maxine Overacre died in Vinton,VA. She's listed in the Roanoke Times.

Thanks
Cindy

You have found the Overacre family cemetery. I have Christopher Overacre born 05 Feb 1813 died 15 July 1895. His wife Luticea Ann Settle b 25 Feb 1840 d May 1915 Stewardsville, Bedford, VA.

Did you happen to take pictures? If so, I'd love to have a copy. We are trying to get into DAR. Christopher Overacre was a grandson of George Overacre/Oberaker who is a Rev War patriot with the SAR. Unfortunately, DAR does not take SAR documentation. Also the SAR lineage goes thru another uncle.

So please email me.

Thanks
Cindy

Hi,
Am trying like the dickens to establish absolutely the link between William Pitzer b. 20 Feb. 1808 Botetourt VA d. 15 Aug 1887 Boone Co. IN. If I can positively get the connection that this is William's father then I believe I have the line from my grandfather back.
Am showing William married to:
Sarah Atvenson with two kids, Jonathan Milton and Sarah E.
Rebecca Findley with four kids: Martha L, Virginia E., Abel and MaryE.
then married to Louisa Lower with three kids: William Nelson, Luther C. and Charles B.
Then married to my gg-grandmother Lydie A. and three kids:
Philadelphia J, Rufus A and Mary...(some question if she was acutally Philadelphia's mother or if Louisa was)
and finally Gladys A. Clements (don't know of any children)
Any help pointing me in the right direction to establish this link positively with where to find documentation is appreciated!
Thanks so much!
LaTisha Pitzer Dew
stableboss24@yahoo.com

I don't believe I have anything further on the Pitzer family. However, as it has been quite some time since I've worked on my Virginia lines, I may have something I don't remember right now. I've run off your message and will let you know what, if anything, I come up with.

Pat Daniels

If you need something, you should post the info you need. It's time consuming to keep asking for info. Who Where & When are the items needed for a successful query. I happen to be going to the courthouse today in Botetourt.. but this will not be on my list, since there is no info..
