John Mann II born c1726/1727 died Nov 10,1778. He 1st married Abilgail Dickenson, c1756 and 2) married Frances Elizabeth Carpenter, called Damis on Mar 9, 1760 Orange Co, Va, (current day Augusta). I do not know if there were children born to Abigail, I assume so but I have not identified them.

My source for these two marriages were from the Carpenter researchers, who are very good researchers. Also Chronicles of the Scotch Irish Settlement of Virginia and various other Va Books.

I do not have access to Ancestry.co.uk so I can not comment on what it says.

Norma Ooley Herman

These are the records I have and ancestry.co.uk:
John l married Francis Elizabeth Carpenter in 1736.
John II 1727-1778,married Francis Damish Carpenter born about 1750.His 2nd.wife was Francis Elizabeth Damrish.Since divorce was almost unheard of then I am assuming Damis passed away?
Please share any info.you have on the Mann family and I will do the same.
I have read that there was a strong bond between Carpenters and Manns from the beginning along with 2 or 3 other family's in Va.

Laura, instead of making this thread 500 reply's, I'll just keep editing this one as I compile info.

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=0&dbid=7...

Found this 1820 census of Botetourt......right Jacob as far as you know? Catherine was already married of course.

Do you have copies of the court records that Rena posted below?

Found Jacob's property tax records for 1820, 1819, 1818, 1817 so far. What it tells me, along with his 1820 Census record is this:

1) After looking at pages of the taker's census' records its clear that Jacob had a son between the ages of 16-18 and one between 19-26. The taker incorrectly noted males for column's 3 and 4 seperately (technically he should have had 1 male 16-18, two males 16-26 counting the 16-18 year old twice). The 16-18 year old could be the Jacob mentioned in the article you linked (assuming he was born in 1802 as they stated).
2) Additionally, I found that Jacob was taxed for 2 male adults besides himself on the 1820 personal property tax records. The census shows the oldest two males as mentioned above. This means the 16-18 year old was 18 rather than 16-17, for he wouldn't have been taxed younger. This conjecture is further supported by the 1819 personal property tax record for Jacob, for the 17 year old is not taxed, but the older male is (18-25 in 1819). In 1818, this older male isn't counted, so the older male could either be born in 1801 (19 yrs in 1820) and be a son of Jacob, or this could be Catherine's husband Daniel (when was he born anyway?) assuming Catherine stayed with or moved back with her Father and Mother in 1819.
3) The 1820 Census has 3 children under the age of 10 and that Jacob's wife is over the age of 45. Are these her children (or at least ALL her children?) ..Unlikely. More likely these are grandchildren of Jacob and Barbara, and that the parents are either Catherine and Daniel or another sibling. Knowing Catherine and Daniels children's place of births could help. Do they have a separate 1820 census record that possibly living with Jacob and Barbara?

Not really. I've written to Rena and Loretta in Botetourt but nothing has ever turned up. Even the court papers for the Worrel citation is AOL.

I've focused on many of my husband's IL family because it is huge. I put Jacob aside while I worked on some others.

Hi Jon, I would love to know about Botetourt Jacob Black. Please do post any leads you can pass along.

Sorry I confused you with the article. I am fairly sure that Jacob is the brother of Catherine, son of Botetort Jacob. If Jacob senior was still alive, in the 1820s, I believe that he traveled to IL with the Kessler crew.

I can also tell you that the folks in Illinois really don't know about the man they honored in IL.

Hi Laura,

I'm confused on the link you provided, or perhaps I skim read it way to quickly. The article seems to say that that Jacob Black was born in 1801, and obviously couldn't have been Catherine's father, so I got lost in his connection to your Jacob. Isn't the article talking about a man who was in the Black Hawk War and was buried there in Illinois?

On what I can do for you is look into Jacob Black in Botetourt, and see what I can find. I've got some resources that may be helpful; we'll see. I'll post here what I find. My assumption is that he was born sometime before 1782, given that he was father of Catherine.

Are you interested in ancestral facts like possible parents of Jacob, even if he wasn't a military hero?
2) Rena....could you tackle this one? (Was Jacob Black married to Barbara Lark?). She may know the answer to that if the marriage occurred in Botetourt.
3) I don't have enough info to research this question.
4) Obviously given the date of birth, the Jacob Black of your link is not the Jacob Black who fathered Catherine. Not sure what your looking for in that question.

In 1837 Elijah Kelley sold a section of land on Back Creek to Eli Arthur. At that time Eli Arthur was living in Bedford County but he was born in Botetourt County and was probably 'coming home'. The land sale shows up in the "Watts Collection" from 'Historical Society of Western Virginia, Roanoke, Virginia' Would very much like to see the complete details, locations, etc.

Our family has been trying to discover Eli's ancestors (specifically Father and Mother)and more information could help. Eli was born 'William Eli (possibly Elijah) Arthur' sometime between 1793-1799 in, most likely, Botetourt County - Roanoke. Married in 1819, Bedford Quaker Community. Went west with his son Amaziah and extended family and died in Missouri 1865.

Correction: Absalom Dempsey Baker and Moses J. Baker were brothers. They do not appear by DNA to be great-grandsons of Samuel Baker and Mary Hodnett of Bedford County. Absalom and Moses appear to be related to the William Baker group on Bakernet.dna. I still think Samuel Baker and Mary Hodnett are related to the gunsmith Baker group #4. Not sure who Samuel, the son of Samuel Baker and Betsy Trent, married. DNA results in the future will sort out this family. Jan

Thank you, Jan. I have a lot of IL genealogy balls in the air right now. I hope to come back to Jacob Black. One vet of the Black Hawk War was honored almost 3 yrs ago. http://will.illinois.edu/news/spotstory/illinois-national-gu...

I phoned and wrote but no one ever replied. Guess they want to keep him to themselves. But I'd bet this one came from VA. Catherine Black Kessler and her Jacob Black sure did.

I forgot to tell you I live in VA about an hour from the Glade Creek Church where the older Kesslers are buried.

Happy New Year,
Laura

It's certainly a possibility. The approximate birth dates are in the right time frame.

The Kyle surname sounded familiar. When I checked my records I found that a granddaughter of John and Jane McCartney married a Kyle. Her name was Charlotte Penelope Biggs, daughter of Martha McCartney and Allen Biggs. Charlotte married John William Henry Kyle (11 Jun 1847-23 May 1923).

There is one other record of a McCartney/Kyle relationship. In the early Virginia marriage records Sarah McCartney married Hugh Kyle 03 Oct 1803 in Rockingham County.

UPDATE: Per a recent DNA test on a living male Davidson descendant of William Davidson and Martha Baker, that Davidson family was part of DNA "Family 16" (at www.davidsongenes.org) versus the DNA "Family 10" Davidson family that had previously seemed to be almost a certainty. Anyway, "DNA does not lie," so unless there was an "adoption" or an "out-of-wedlock birth" in this "mix" somewhere, I have to assume that this William Davidson was truly a member of DNA "Family 16."

There was another William Davidson (born about 1750....so probably fairly close in age to the above William Davidson who married Martha Baker)) in the Botetourt/Rockbridge Co., VA who was from PA and who married first to Sarah McCoy and second to the widow Mrs. Elizabeth (Wilson) McCrea. That William Davidson was also a member of DNA "Family 16" (per yet another DNA test), but the researchers of "Family 16" have no idea at this time as to just how the above two William Davidsons were related to one another.

I continue to work on the William Painter family enumerated in 1850 Botetourt County next to John Bean b. 1779 and Hannah b. 1789, John Bean b. 1825 and Margaret b. 1827. As an update, YDNA from male descendents of 3 of William Painters sons indicate William was DNA surname Kenney. Do you know of any connection between this Bean family and William the neighbor? William's wife was Mary Taylor and they were married in Botetourt County in 1845. Second son Jeremiah states in his Civil War pension application that he was born in Buchanan, VA.

Thanks Donna
I am still looking for something that would confirm the parents of the Thomas Rock wife Sarah, maybe Parsons. Thomas is on the 1820 census of Giles next to an Elizabeth Rock. I suspect they may be mother and son. Other children of Elizabeth ""may be"" James m Sally Kerr and Nancy who married George Webb. I have no documents any of these are related. There is also a Obeniah Rose who wills land to a Sinny Rock and Elizabeth Rock is to receive rent for Sinney Rock.
Obediah Rose and John Rock are on the 1810 census/tax of Montgomery Co VA. Elizabeth, Thomas and Obediah Rose are near each other on the 1820 Census.
Accorfing to census records Thomas was born ca 1793,John Rock and Elizabeth Snodgrass were married 1792 Botetourt.
Any suggestions would be great, and I'll be happy to share.
Thanks

Hi Donna,
I saw your posting for Rocks in-or-near Botetourt Co. and I thought I would provide the names of the Rocks in my tree ... that sounds funny to me :)

1. Clara Rock who married James W. Webb 6/2/1846 in Giles County, VA

2. Henry Rock who married Nancy Phoebe Webb 3/14/1847 in Giles County, VA

3. James Rock (father to Clara)

4. Jane Rock who married Daniel Givens 1831 in Giles County, VA

5. Nancy Rock who married George Webb, Jr. (AKA George II) in 1826 in Giles County, VA

I belong to the large family of Webbs in these 2 counties, but know little about the Rock family. I hope this is familiar to someone out there!

Thanks for posting!
David Wiley
tracingmyroots@yahoo.com
