You are right. Robert Stoner, A Seed-Bed of the Republic wrote that in 1944, the title went to C. H. Hammond, "...whose son Lee Hammond now (1962)occupies the lovely old home. "

Horace Mayfield bought the house in 1934, still lived there in 1937, but I have nothing between then and the enty in Stoner's book.

I love old houses ALMOST as much as old ancestors, and have been researching this house and the original land Thomas Rowland bought in 1798, but still looking for more info for a web report I'm working on. I have been working on my line and think that the John Pitzer of Botetourt may be my line.
Any further info you have and are willing to share pointing me in the right direction would be SO appreciated.
My ggg-gfather was William Pitzer b. 1808 VA d. 1887 IN. m. Lydie A. had three children, Philadelphia J., Rufus A (b. 1876 my g-gfather, and Mary.
I was stumped as to which John was his father but now think it was John Jr. In Botetourt VA.
Had thought William's father, John was actually in Monongalia WVA but have absolutely nothing to back it up. This line looks more favorable.

I don't believe I have anything further on the Pitzer family. However, as it has been quite some time since I've worked on my Virginia lines, I may have something I don't remember right now. I've run off your message and will let you know what, if anything, I come up with.
