Do you have any information on the Craddock family of Nelson VA in your records? Willie Craddock was my gr grandmother. She was born in 1853. No death date that I can find but thinking it was before 1900. Need anything you might find on her family. Thanks

I am seeking information on Kezziah Phelps. B. 1780 Buckingham Co. Va. Married? Daniel Ford. She appears on 1860 census for Garrard Co. Ky with a daughter Permelia Ford. She had a daughter Mariah and a son Stephen. Mariah married ? Edmond Daley in 1825 in Garrard Co. they had 8 children. Edmond then married Elizabeth Kidd and they had children. None Mariah and Edmonds children (nor does Mariah) appear on the 1860 census. Their last child was born 1844 Thomas Wesley Daley. In 1860 Edmond does appear with 2nd wife Elizabeth, along with their children.Daniel signed on Mariah's marriage bond as her father, but Mariah was Phelps not Ford. Daniel also signed on Stephen's marriage bond as his stepfather in 1821 or 1827 (illegible). Any info would be appreciated.

The board is gatewayed to the list. Post on the board and the message will also appear on the list. Post on the list and the message will appear only on the list. Replies to messages on the list will not appear on the board. Occasional users "may" tend to use the boards only(not always). Users subscribe to the list and get postings individually or in digest form. You are not alone as not everyone understands this. Many find the combination helpful and can easily monitor the board. Another way to follow postings on the board is to make it a "favorite." Instructions are on the help pages.
Rootsweb will always be free. Ancestry through its subscribers can afford to provide the many, many resources to us this way. There is much general genealogical/ educational information on Ancestry.com which is free to all. The lists and boards are free. If my annual subscription(about $3 per week) helps me find actual images of the documents or of out of print books found in distant repositories I am grateful. I have saved many more dollars (as well as my time) on travel/hotels/meals. Ancestry.com doesn't have holidays or closed days like the repositories. I can "go" there 24/7. Some of the free sites do have images. Many have transcriptions and abstracts. When there is a source closer to the original, that source would be considered more reliable. Images of the original are preferred to abstracts and transcriptions. I can't find everything on the free sites.
If you object to paying for a subscription or cannot afford one, many libraries subscribe. You may need to search for one which you can access for free from home(such as state libraries). State libraries are paid for through your taxes. You just don't have to pay directly for them. Please don't wait for everything you need to be posted on the internet for free. It may never happen. Ancestry is adding countless resources every week. The Family Search is adding a great deal of documents or information for free. For the time being we have a great deal. When we find indexes on Ancestry, we may then be able to find the actual record on Family Search. The additions may not help you yet, but I have found much to help me. Happy hunting.

Here is what I have on the story of the 3 brothers. Three Ray brothers or their parents came from Scotland to to Virginia in the late 1600's or early 1700's. The brothers left Virginia. One brother went to North or South Carolina and 2 passed though the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky, one stayed in Kentucky and the other one went to Indiana and settled in English Indiana. The one who stayed in Kentucky founded a town named "O'Bannion" after a relative in Scotland. Later this relative came to KY.and taught school there. One of the son's of the Ky Ray moved to Louisville KY. and built a warehouse. Another sone crossed the Ohio river at New Albany Indina and built a drugstore.William Woodson Ray had a son that was a dr. and he crossed the Ohio river. His name was Joel Wilford Ray the second. Some of the surnames are: Brown, Scott, O'Bannon,Wallace.
Thanks Edwina

...A large number of the old settlers came through cumberland gap, it was one of the main routes used, it later became part of the early national road system, I'm not familiar with a story about 3 brothers but have heard one about five brothers named ray immigrating from ireland in the early 1700's, there were actually 7 but 2 stayed behind with their father william ray of drunskee in county down ireland....jim

Sorry, the death record you're looking for is not in the index. As for obits, you can try the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, VA. They have an obit index for Lynchburg & its surrounding areas, including Amherst.

Good luck in your search, sorry I couldn't help you more. Midge

Hi James.
Always good to hear from another Ray.
My John Ray lived in Bath County KY. The family moved to Cumberland County Illnois about 1840s. John died between 1840 and 1850. Fanny, his wife and a few of the children (mostly grown) moved back to Bath County Ky after he died.

There children were....
Louisa D, Montraville W, Volney M (my side), Gideon G, Lafayette C, George H, Robert M, Coleman Owen, and Wickliff L.

David Wayne Ray sr

Hi,
My names is Eileen Hansen and I am working on adding my son in law's branch to my family tree. He is descended from Stevie Mays, the daughter of Mallie Mays born in Kentucky. My searches have led me to believe that Mallie is actually Mary D Williams who married Robert H Mays from Amherst. Stevie Mays married Frank Morehouse and their son, Henry G Morehouse, is my SIL's grandfather. Would love to share notes. Since this is not my direct family any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.
Eileen

I'm trying to connect/extend my Staton ancestors for my gr-grandfather Uriah Branch Staton (on 1880 US Census as Uria Stutan or Uriah B. Stutan) b. abt 1835 & wife, Letha Staton (or Stutan) b. abt 1840. Children listed: Margaret-b. abt 1856, James-b. abt 1858, Douglass-b. abt 1868, and Robbert- b. abt 1871 (all shown as Stutan sirname), and Edward Walter Staton (not listed) -b. 23 Oct 1864 around Lynchburg, VA (my grandfather). Census stated home for this family was Pedlar, Amherst, VA.

Anyone have any info prior to 1840 that connects Uriah Branch Staton, Edward Walter Staton (m. Mary Maggie Bunnell abt 1900-1905, and my father Robert Glenn Staton from High Point, NC?

These Statons seem to be very elusive. lol

Edwina: It has been my experince in 8yrs of research that I have very little faith in what I have found on ancestry.com and other sites that claim to have such a good reputation for provining facts about our family's, infact they have been compromised by encourging anybody who thinks they know their family tree to down load it to their database, some may be as it should be and that is how it was ment, but there are those armchair wizards, that have poluted what those good people intended to be a valuable resource, take this as you may but to do some serious questioning of what you find would be good advice, get yourself some site that can educate you to pitfalls and the correct way to some independant research without relying on other peoples work, but on real facts from real records of where your ancestors actually lived....jim
